Bal d'Afrique

I purchased a sample sized vial to try and it is love at first sniff for me. It is very fresh, clean and invigorating scent. Definitely inoffensive and would be a good choice to wear to an office. Lovely for spring and summer. I definitely will be purchasing a full bottle!

Bal d'Afrique Is probably one of the best summer scents that I have smiled in my life. The perfume is very light and airy and radiant at the same time, and it smells like a mix of flowers/detergent/fruit shampoo in very good way with some light woods. The silage and projection on my skin are around 8 hours, and I usually do 8-12 sprays. The only bad thing about Bal d'Afrique in my opinion is the steep price.

My first association is with bubblegum. Not that it smells like bubblegum, exactly, but it has a synthetic fruity sweetness that leans girly and pink for me. It's not overpowering, though. I was intrigued when I smelled it on paper because it's pleasant, but on my skin, it wore out its welcome quickly. Even though it became faint after not very long, the whiffs of it I got became more and more annoying to me. Too pink.

Smells like what a white suburban mom could probably be found wearing in 2010s. Very fresh, clean minimalism, waiting for your arrival core. Agree that this may give hotel lobby to some. This could be worn to an office as well as everyday, as it is not a sickly sweet or overpowering scent. The florals are quite elegant. You will be pleasantly surprised by Byredo this time.

fruity citrus clean luxury hotel sheets with violet & florals scented cleaners.. i really can’t describe the smell well enough but know its magical With the edp it has the base of vetiver and its very apparent. It has smokey woody slightly earthy scent thats slowly coming forward during the lifetime of the perfume which is sadly very short (3hrs-ish) I strongly disagree with people who claim that the edp is now obsolete that absolu is out. Both have different bases that heavily influence scent profile. And the longevity isn’t really an issue you can always carry a decant and reapply. Or get the whole line of shower gel and lotions

It is a bright, elegant, and effortlessly chic fragrance inspired by the warmth, colors, and energy of Africa. It feels fresh, sunny, and uplifting without being generic, with a beautiful balance between citrus brightness, delicate florals, and creamy woods. It is versatile enough for everyday wear and especially beautiful in spring and summer. Its only limitation is that the airy composition can feel somewhat subtle, and for the price, some may expect stronger projection or a more complex evolution. Still, its effortless elegance and recognizable character make it a modern classic.

Just smelled this from a decant. INSTANTLY recognized this scent DNA. an ex-girlfriend wears a dupe of this and I was bought back straight away. I can't like this. I want to, but the negative emotions attached to this scent, I just can't. I also smell this DNA heaps around town on girls of all ages. It's definitely an overused, over duped scent that's for sure! I do slightly get the ''Hotel Lobby'' vibe a bit from it, but overall, it really just smells like clean girl's skin. Like a freshly showered clean girl. I as a man cannot wear this. It leans too far feminine. The average normie would definitely just say this smells like ''clean smelling women's fragrance''

Definitely more feminine leaning. The Citrusy opening fades quickly and the violet note is over powering for me and smells like make up. Clean and linear which is not bad but definitely not for me.

I've been keen to try the offerings from Byredo for some time now, but the dilemma has been deciding which to sample first, as several look good on paper. I'd managed to narrow those I felt were a potential fit for me down to Alto Astral, Black Saffron, Mojave Ghost and Super Cedar. Bal d'Afrique didn't make that list, for no other reason than that I'd not read up on its notes and accords. It was by pure chance, then, that I stumbled upon it while buying a selection of other samples, which included L'Artisan Parfumeur's Timbuktu and Memo's African Leather. It was the "Africa" link in the name that persuaded me. That, of course, is not a good reason to purchase a sample, but now and then it's worth throwing caution to the wind. My initial reaction to each of the three samples mentioned above was incredibly positive, to the point where I thought I'd buy full bottles of all three. This is where it becomes so important to wear a fragrance for a few days before making a final decision, and this is exactly what I did with Bal d'Afrique. Although lemon is not listed as a note, I experience it in the opening, but this is not the smell of a freshly picked and cut lemon. Instead, it reminds me of the lemon filling in a lemon meringue pie. It is especially evident from the atomiser and, to a lesser extent, during the first few seconds on my skin. It's sweeter than fresh lemon and certainly not unpleasant. Deeper in this opening, I find a hint of something akin to nitrile gloves, although I suspect it's not the smell itself that I'm registering, but rather the dry, powdery sensation they evoke. If that accord truly is part of the composition, it dissipates quickly. After five minutes on my skin, the sweet citrus note has disappeared, leaving the floral notes of violet and, to a lesser extent, marigold to shine. Even this phase of its development is short-lived and, for me, over within 30 minutes. From then onwards, it's all about vetiver and woodiness. Hovering above that are still occasional flashes of violet and other florals that I lack the knowledge to identify, so the show is not completely over. I do, of course, appreciate that when I lose notes as quickly as I have with Bal d'Afrique, there is a strong element of nose blindness at play, which gives me hope that all the initial beauty and sparkle of the scent are still available to those around me long after they've disappeared for me. Yet, ultimately, I want to experience that beauty myself for longer than I did. Once I reach the vetiver-and-cedar dry-down of Bal d'Afrique, I get a slightly sweet, creamy, powdery accord that sits very close to the skin. In fact, it's a rather pleasant phase of the scent, but again it is short-lived and eventually gives way to something closer to the lingering smell of dry, washed-out soap. Bal d'Afrique reaffirms why I never buy a fragrance without first having worn it for a day or more. Some scents reveal hidden depths over time; others reveal hidden disappointments. Bal d'Afrique does neither, but it does give away its best moments in the first half hour before settling into something altogether more ordinary. It begins by inviting me into a vibrant marketplace full of colour, citrus and life. Half an hour later, the crowds have disappeared, the colours have faded, and I'm left wandering quiet, dusty backstreets that, while pleasant enough, bear little resemblance to the place I thought I'd arrived in. Tested: 1ml sample Seasons / occasions: Best suited to summer. Works well in casual, relaxed settings. Key thoughts: Lovely opening that disappears from my skin extremely quickly. Woody, soapy, powdery dry-down. Overall rating: 8/10 Buy full bottle: No (but if that opening had stayed with me longer, it would have been a yes).

This is citrusy in opining and turn into an aromatic sweet , very pleasant fragrance. Performance is not very great and lasts for 3-4 hours , but may lasts longer on clothes.

This is a very subtle, woody but also a bit fresh and creamy fragrance. On my skin it stays really close and doesn’t project but the longevity is around 6-8 hours. Office friendly and elegant.

Best blind buy ever, I was super skeptical at first, honestly only bought it bc I wanted to buy a byredo fragrance for my collection and it was on sale, I chose Bal D’Afrique bc I still wanted to somehow “play it safe” (buying the mose popular one from this brand), and I was left completely speechless when I tried this fragrance for the first time!! On me is super complex, sometimes the violet peaks through the most and it leads more feminine, sometimes the bergamot and cedar are the most prominent notes and then it leads more masculine so I chose to vote for unisex, longevity in around 6h, honestly perfect for me!! I don’t regret one cent spent on this perfume and I hope my byredo collection will get bigger in the near future☺️☺️☺️

On my first try, it immediately made me remember something i owned at home. This one had me puzzled for a while. And then on my way home, i immediately realized that this is in the same realm of moschino's toyboy. Even though the olfactory notes aren't nearly identical, they're in same realm. The drydown is super identical. So guys, if you really love this one, i strongly recommend that toyboy is a better alternative. Hence toyboy lasts longer than this too...

This was one of my most highly anticipated scents to try and it really didn’t disappoint. I can see this being very wearable and easy to love for so many people. I think because I have other perfumes that are more interesting and suited to my taste, this didn’t stand out as something I would buy a full bottle of but it’s very comforting and I do quite like it.

Bal d’Afrique opens with a friendly, bright citrus that fades quickly. Very soon the violet takes over—soft, slightly powdery, wrapped in clean musks. It leans distinctly feminine in its soft sweetness and polished vibe. Though often pitched as unisex, on my skin the promised vibrancy and versatility never quite land. The dry woods and vetiver barely register; what remains is a safe, linear musky comfort. It’s pleasant but not memorable, a well-behaved scent that never develops a point of view. For me, it felt more generic than personal.

On me, this quickly just smells like an oily, slightly nutty body lotion skin scent with a few whiffs of powdery violet. Maybe I’m congested. I will try again and report back.

For my wife. Opens with a powdery-floral Lemon. Smells nice. Soft. I like it. Will see how it develops, but probably not more than a "like" on my side. I smelled it on her later, and the dry down was actually really great--the vetiver came out really beautifully. Really nice on my wife.

I’ve got some thoughts about this. First, among my collection, this rates high in wearability. I lean more niche and this is one of my most crowd pleaser fragrances. Doesn’t diminish its worth in my eyes, but it is an easy wear for times I don’t want to think to much about my fragrance. A summer no brainer. For notes: super well blended, no overwhelming notes. Except for pineapple! For some reason I get super strong juicy pineapple which is never listed on any website. For mood / vibe. I don’t get africa nor Paris but I don’t mind it so much. It’s a strong name and a poetic scent which is enough for me. My only qualms with this is performance. For an EDP it’s pretty weak and for the price point I’m a bit annoyed at the lastingness and projection. I got it for free but would no purchase.

Smells like isana urea Body lotion %5 :) İts very beautiful but its not worth the price

I have a decant. The opening is citrus forward and soapy to my nose. I began to really enjoy it once the sweetness came through. Dry down was soft and cozy, fluffy woodsiness -- a bit too mild and typical, but perfectly pleasant. Day time wear.

I am a parfume enthusiast in my 40-s with around 50 fragrances...everybody's talking about bal d'afrique absolu as better and more worthy fragrance.but for me this is the real gem of fragrances.... This version feels more polished,unique,fresher,maybe more feminine but not so much that a man can't wear it. Absolu is darker,stronger,more masculine,but i feel that it is not so unique because it has that similar designer vibe like armani stronger with you. Mostly i like the original's lightness,freshness and uniqueness.

📍 A smooth and sweet tropical pina coda then dries down to a grassy vetiver musk. This is a clean smooth and creamy citrus woody vetiver scent. (I don't smell any citrus tho). The most blind buy safe scent within the house of Byredo. Everrry time I spray this it make my eyes roll back into my head 😂 out of the like 170 bottles of perfume I own this one is my favourite and in a league of its own… a must.

Bought Byredo's sample kit and this was the first perfume I tried. So disappointed. Four puffs and I hardly smell anything, just a weak skin scent of a little lemon. Lets hope rest of the samples are better.

Great fragrance. I haven’t tested anything close to this, even though Boadicea and Sospiro seem to be quite close to it, according to the votes. It unlocks a deep childhood memory scent for me and it reminds me of my relative’s smell or baby’s diapers’ smell, I can’t decide which one. Great perfume, mid+ performance, overpriced.

I guess I’m one of the few people who get butter from this. Pass.
