No, it doesn't smell like shit. Get over it.
my boyfriend made me smell it. i vomited
As an adventurer of experimental scents I just had to try this, and partly for the bit. I dared not to put this on my skin, my sample got one or two sprays on the cardstock it arrived in. Hyrax opens spicy with pink peppercorn really showing out, but there was something underneath the florals and spices that reminded me of a kid with bad breath wearing cheap cologne who faces you directly when he speaks, god forbid a tonsil stone fly out. I left my sample out on a table while I went about my day. I came back to check on it some hours later and yep, The netizens were right. Photo realistic shit. I couldn’t believe all the hype was real. We did it guys, we bottled photo realistic scent of excrement. I showed this to my cat and she cringed and turned her head away. I would say this is a perfect scent for a man.
Smells like literal shit
Animalic as hell, as it should be. very strong, round not sharp, quite delicious. Aphrodisiac probably used for love spells. Beautiful sweet whiskey tonka strong base that carries all the amazing other notes. Wearable but on the "stronger palate" taste choice, i love smelling this but I'm profoundly twisted. ( please with moderation and in the right climate) Yes it's animalic, it's supposed to be. I like this a lot ! Beautifully done. I am in love with Zoologist's creations. Probably hard for most to wear. Def the most animalic of the brand so far to me.
Hyrax took me some real time to come around to. I almost blind bought the bottle because I was so into an animalic perfume kick, but I’m glad I hadn’t at the time. Hyrax doesn’t smell like “poop” but there is undeniably something dark, earthy, and funky. It reminds me of green olives and those rubber bat decorations from Halloween. I would really love to have a bottle of this. I would rarely be in the mood to wear it, but when I am in the mood for a weird animalic beast, there’s nothing better than hyrax
It's your stinkiest yet truest friend for the hottest of sunny days.
This strong animalistic scent is vomit inducing!! It honestly smells more than secretions, like excrement!! Some BS with fur in a bottle!!!!
Poooooooop! Dry dusty rat droppings. Enjoy.
One of if not THE Worst fragrance i have ever smelled. Straight butthole.
Ok, not gonna lie, I purchased a decant of this just to check how the hell it smells. My sister had tried it and described it as hilarious and a prank in perfume form because, if you can get past the anal gland, it’s actually quite a nice and interesting, warm floral. She also informed me that one of the cats we have, found interesting and kept sniffing, the other didn't like it and turned the other way, and our dog tried to lick it. Do with this info what you will. And the reviews have been a form of entertainment for years for me. On me, well, folks, I didn’t get neither flowers nor anal gland. Zero fecalness. To be sure I wasn’t crazy, I went to some friends to smell me, just to confirm I don’t smell like shit and that I just can’t pick it up, and no, no poopiness at all. The indoles in this perfume are very camphor-like on me, they smell like naphthalene. It smells like a grandma’s house, with the grandma inside. There is indeed something alive in this one. It smells very vintage, balsamic, animalic, and warm. Resinous as well, slightly boozy, but no floral, idk I couldn't pink us anything. It smells like a storage room in an old grandma’s house, wood, wool, mothballs, warm, and alive. Wouldn’t wear it, but it’s an experience. And 100% not as bad as many reviews described it, I start to feel that we have become way too removed from smells like that, bc honestly, I was expecting the worst.
This is a beautifully blended, warm, boozy, animalic amber with some delicate rose and bright hyacinth notes. I get the touch of pepper and lemony elemi too. The mid is thick and syrupy—like a proper amber—and then the dry down is a dusty dry yet sweaty leather that is slightly reminiscent of Salome by Papillon.
i thought i sort of liked it at first, smelled like rootbeer and just a smidge of that pissy note that ive heard about. as it dried down, it got stronger and stronger until it smelled like cleaning a toilet at an airport. it smells Exactly like dried piss that keeps getting rewet by another stream of piss.
Exaggerated drama. This is a wearable animalic that is incredibly cozy and warm. Amber, spices, wood, whiskey, and piss. It’s a lot of fun to wear and maybe my favorite from the house. Don’t be so afraid of this one. Get a sample, wear it on skin, and enjoy it’s beauty.
I finally got to try this after the rest of the Zoologist collection and, Huh...I actually like it. Wow. It is certainly animalic. But it's so well-blended that it is actually quite appealing to my nose. It's warm, animalic, boozy, with a touch of florals. It's almost...dare I say...comforting. Weird. Maybe I'm a freak, ahaha.
Is it wrong that I really like this? It is fecal and pissy with flowers in there somewhere. Utterly outrageous. If you are in the market for a serious animalic like I was, then this won't disappoint you in the slightest.
A little animalic, a little chlorinated. Very pungent and extremely high quality.
The votes on this are absolutely hilarious. 😂😂
It's sold out on a lot of websites. Is it discontinued?
Honestly after reading all the reviews here I got a bit disappointed with the inoffensiveness of Hyrax. Either you're supersensitive or just lying/exagerrating the alleged foulness of the fragrance. It's a warm leather couch, whiskey, sweet styrax, hot amber & metallic saffron. I do not detect any Civet & the Hyraceum is baaarely detectable for me. Since the main diet of the hyrax are plants, the smell could be likened to that of a stable. It's just fertilizer/dung. Some people below me make it out as if someone smeared literal human shit on their skin..? So in my despondent state I decided to introduce the scent to my girlfriend to get a second opinion. On my skin still, I walked over to her and presented my arm: Interestingly enough Hyrax made her RECOIL with disgust, fear & reverence. She almost puked! Blessed days!!! And the same goes for basically anyone else whom I forced to smell it! Tomorrow I'm going with 4 sprays of this to the gym! 💩🦫🦨 Thank God for sensitive ninnies!!
Surprised by the wearability of Zoologist's animalic-dried-fruits Camel, I was hoping for a positive experience from Hyrax as well. Alas, I found it to be utterly foul. I love that it exists. I love that this kind of stuff is being made. But I just can't make peace with this leather-and-piss scent being on my skin. Scared to go outside wearing it.
On my skin, Hyrax is an ambery, spicy animalic fragrance. I get notes of cardamom at the top, cinnamon and civet at the heart and amber, castoreum and civet at the base. Initial impressions were, “This is not bad. Oh wait the civet is coming through. Oh no, how am i gonna wear this to work”. On my skin the civet note is so strong, it’s so much stronger compared to camel that i couldnt bring myself to sit beside someone in the train. Its bright and sour and has that piss like quality. The castoreum on the other hand gives off the halitosis/ bad breath quality, airy and sour. In the air however, it smells like an oily animalic amber. It does not mellow or get any less astringent in the dry down, 7hours in and it’s still as bad as the beginning. I truly regret committing myself to wearing all Zoologist fragrances to work! In terms of originality, the DNA is just an amber fragrance with animalics dialed to 11, for me, being different is not the only criteria to being unique, it has to have a DNA that is rare followed by nuances that are uncommon and still work, and smell atleast decent. If you wash it off, you smell the patchouli, it’s only redeeming quality. After 8 hours, it dies down to end up smelling like Camel. The opening of Hyrax closely resembles that of Andy Tauer's L'Oudh: an oddly refreshing turpentine scent with a piercing quality. It dries down to something pretty animalic--a musky, wet fur accord. At the same time, this is nowhere near as challenging as Dusita's Oudh Infini or Marlou's Ambilux. I suspect that the benzoin and tonka bean restrain the animalics from venturing into truly feral territory.
Truly challenging. I'm not typically sensitive to animalics or skank but this is the one that finally breaks me. Not quite pissy or fecal to me, but rather harsh and chemical-like. It almost circles back to a challenging oud profile or an industrial byproduct. I get this briny/fruit-like aroma deep down that I do find alluring, and the deep drydown is a little more in line with traditional heavy animalic musks, but it never gets socially acceptable. Very much keeps an astringent edge throughout. I was scared my nose was a little too attuned to animalics but I guess this does actually put it all into perspective. It’s worth the sample and quite interesting, but it may be the first fragrance I’ve tested that I couldn't imagine wearing outside.
this is the best fragrance from Zoologist for me ( I'm a animalic perfume lover), the opening is weird and strong of hyraceum, it is very animalic, cheesy, pissy. However, the dry down is a beauty of amber and musk, you have to be patient, the dry down of this frag may make you love it.
This perfume projects very readily and leaves a great trail. It is also long lasting and damn near impossible to fully remove from your person when applied. Wear this if you truly want to smell unique. No one else will smell like you that's for sure. Here's your new beast mode signature scent and it's all yours, trust me. Now that we are done poking fun at how some demographics evaluate scent let's get into this one. Opens very very spicy. So much pepper. Then comes warmth and some slight powdery vibes. Almost an incense feel. And under that - a fecal note. It's not too prominent yet. Maybe you can survive with this. The incense takes more prominence and the funky fecal note starts to rise. There's also a pretty strong leather vibe intertwined here. Oddly in all this next comes an almost damp fur vibe. The Hyraceum mix here almost gives what I would resemble or think of as similar to a funky oud accord. And together as a whole that's where it brings me, seeing some similarities between the slightly funky tarriness present in oud or oud accord scents. There's something in this I definitely recognize, like it's been smelled so many times before, but no idea how that would be as most people don't try to go around smelling crap poop intentionally. I am very perplexed, why would someone wear this. Moreso, why would someone create this. Truly a mystery . That said that is why zoologist is amazing. And why we keep coming back. What nonsense are they up to this time. No room for middle of the road in the majority of their scents it's love or hate. After spending 1.5 hrs with this beast I tried to remove it and was able to dampen it, calm it down, but it's still there 5 hrs later. If I was tied up and only set free if I wore this or Megamare. I would choose Megamare.
First impression (on skin): Animalic, pungent, unique, strong, masculine, woody, spicy, wet stone, primitive, slight urine smell, dirty, punchy, bold, slight florals, musky, smokey, unconventional, uncompromising Right after my first try of this perfume, I knew it wasn't for everyone. It's extremely punchy with the animalic/musk notes, and doesn't hold back. I personally love a unique, unconventional perfume, and this was my first time trying something with African stone, so it was an interesting (but fun) experience for me. It's pungent, primitive and stinky (affectionate). Heavily musky, smokey, and woody, but also a little wet. At first, it actually kind of reminded me of pub bathroom? So, get ready for a slight pee, or dirty enclosure, smell. If you can handle that and give this perfume a chance to settle, those woody, smoky, and subtle floral notes do shine through to give it a mature quality, too. This is definitely a masculine-leaning perfume, rather than unisex. It isn't typical for most occasions. I got polite, but uncertain opinions when I was wearing this. However, if you don't mind a few glances your way, then you might bode well with this. I mean, I think the charm of Hyrax is how unconventional it is. If you want to smell like an animal, well… here it is. On my clothing, I could actually pick up more of the amber, whiskey and sandalwood than on my skin, which I preferred. If it sat on my skin the same way, I'd probably give this perfume a higher ranking or even consider a full bottle. OVERALL RATING: 3.5/5 RECOMMENDATION: Sample first, not blind-buy safe Location tested: Forearm, sleeve Would I purchase a full bottle?: No
Ah yes, Hyrax, inspired by the sly little animal itself. Nimble, elephant-related, and known for scampering out of rocky crevices with sweaty, rubbery feet gripping sun-warmed stone. Much like hyraxes spilling from hillside cracks to soak up the sun on their musky hides, this scent slowly works its way into your senses with a deceptively light yet undeniably primal touch. Let’s step into the scorching heat and meet this unlikely creature. Hyrax opens with pink pepper, elemi, Turkish rose, and a touch of saffron. The pink pepper and rose feel softly rosy and gently spicy, floating in with a light, almost sunlit airiness before slowly thickening. Elemi pulls the scent downward into something more resinous and mineral, while the saffron adds a warm, almost hay-like dryness that hints at heat and dust rather than sweetness. After about five to ten minutes, the unmistakable heart of Hyrax takes center stage. An animalic, musky, almost leathery quality emerges from the African stone, or more bluntly, fossilized hyrax poop. Fitting, right? I do appreciate how Fragrantica politely lists this as simply “Hyrax” as a note. I mean, just look at the cute little critter. Alongside this animalic core there is a boozy touch from the whiskey, styrax adding balsamic depth, and hyacinth contributing warm florals. The overall impression here is dry dusty florals baked under a relentless sun, more arid than pretty, more evocative than inviting. After a couple of hours, the animalics fully assert themselves as castoreum and civet join in. Rather than making things harsher, they smooth out the edges. The blending here is quite good, giving Hyrax a distinctly vintage, old-school fragrance feel. Around the four-hour mark is when Hyrax becomes truly pleasant for me. Amber, patchouli, sandalwood, and tonka begin to take the edge off. There is still an animalic, leathery backdrop, but now it feels more balanced rather than challenging. So here is where I land on Hyrax. Between the rose and saffron combination and the leather tones from these raw animalics, I believe enjoyment of this scent will largely depend on an appreciation for older-style fragrances. If you know, you know. I honestly do not think this will appeal to a younger audience who may have never smelled anything like this before (but hey, you may love it). For those familiar with older styles of fragrances, it may evoke memories of an era when scents were less restrained. Yes, it is a little stinky, but it is not unheard of. What many now consider ultra-niche and shocking was once worn casually, even daily, without a second thought. I will not be reaching for Hyrax often. This style of perfumery stands out today in a way that asks for a certain mindset. But on the days when I do not care and want to be taken back, Hyrax will be sticking around.
Hyrax is the first scent I've chosen to experience from my discovery set. This is my introduction to the brand. I chose Hyrax to start, aware of its reputation, which made me most curious to know what it's about. OOF! This does NOT disappoint! The quality and performance are outstanding. A little goes a LONG way, giving 'Beastmode' all-new meaning and changing the way I imagine and appreciate perfume. I'm fully intrigued with this scent's evolution. While I may not add Hyrax in full to my collection, I'm so impressed by this perfume and can hardly wait to see what's next of my Zoologist scents to try. It's like I've struck precious gold. I mean, in ways, Hyraceum's the same thing. 🤭🐾🖤 @DIABOULIKAL's review's really funny.
No one is more surprised than I am by how much I like this! Ordered a sample with my last Zoologist order and was spraying a Mouillette and hit my arm by mistake. Once the overwhelming pissy note burned off (15 minutes) it became something utterly unique and highly addictive. Ugh, adding to my wishlist while my wallet weeps.
