WHY!? did I not discover this perfume before now? I am a fan of vintage green chypres and used to collect them, and it is so hard to find perfumes currently in production that approximate their depth, complexity, and green-leafy-herbal with a touch of floral. This one does it!! It reminds me particularly of a 1930s-40s Millot Crepe de Chine parfum, although the Millot has a touch of powder that is absent from the Clinique, and a more rounded, rich, silky impression that might be ambergris?? — or a trace of musk, or the result of decades of maceration in a bottle with a ground glass stopper. The Aromatics Elixir js more sharp and herbal — but it is a very similar complex concoction, with unmistakeable oak mossy depth. It is strong — the concentration of perfume oils seems quite high for an edp, and it also projects and leaves a trail. It is as divisive in my experience as legend has it — I have been followed and asked what I am wearing, but the perfume-sensitive person at my workplace immediately noticed it as overwhelming — although admittedly I think I had applied it somewhat recklessly that day. I am so happy to have a contemporary perfume that evokes those early green chypres!! My little Millot parfum has only about 10 thick drops remaining. I bought my Aromatics Elixir as a decant fom a perfume discounter/deadstock warehouse so cannot comment on its production date.
For me, chypres have been an acquired taste and while I can appreciate the complexity and artistry of many, it takes work to find one I will wear. Aromatics elixir is iconic in this category and I'd considered blind buying a bottle simply to educate myself. Happily, there was a tester out at a local department store Clinique counter recently and I was able to sample Aromatics Elixir on a blotter. There is so much going on here that the first spray was borderline off-putting. Admittedly, it was about the tenth perfume I'd sprayed that afternoon though, all with simpler profiles, so I think the contrast of this complex beast was just shocking, bc it was only a moment before my senses adjusted and I could see what everyone raves about. One could say AE is 'of a certain era' except that everything old becomes new again and I found the profile at once familiar, but also quite novel. There's a unisex quality to it that I actually kinda love. When the avalanche of niche unisex scents have so often smelled like home fragrance to me, AE is def meant to adorn skin, and it could be that of a man or a woman, IMHO. There are so many notes I love (rosewood, chamomile, lemon verbena, jasmine, tuberose, patchouli) balanced so nicely with notes I can appreciate but don't love (aldehydes, orris, oakmoss, incense) that the whole composition just works for me. It reminds me of both women AND men in my childhood that I adored. It's striking, cozy, bright and deep, bold and comforting all at once. A scent full of contrasts that excite me with notes that, in their harmony, feel like coming home. It's a fragrance so well-blended, that I CAN pick out most of the individual notes, but mostly I just experience the conglomerate symphony. The chamomile, lemon verbena, tuberose, patch, and oakmoss stand out to me most, but I can sense the rest undulating in the background also. I can def see why some people would hate it. It's present (although maybe not loud?). It's not one to hum in the background. But I can also see why people love it and I'm definitely leaning that way myself. I enjoy it so much that a blind-bought bottle would have been money well-spent. The only question remaining is if I am one of the lucky few who are able to pull it off. I think the price of a full bottle is worth finding out.
I was 8 years old when this was released. I remember thinking it smelled like bug spray! Fast forward to now... Completely different opinion. Still strong, but I like the retro vibes and of course, the decadent Patchouli!! :))
My mother (who graduated high school in the early 70's) wore this my whole childhood. The sillage is IMMENSE. I have a distinct memory of her coming to pick me up from after school care while wearing it. I had gone to the other side of the building to use the restroom right before she arrived, and when I came out into the hallway, I could smell this fragrance. Followed it down one hallway, then another, and found her, ready to pick me up, in the main room at the end of the scent trail, all the way on the other side of building.
I love this scent, but know it could be polarizing. It's an extremely soapy scent, very reminiscent of bay rum. Herbal, soapy, warm. The spicy carnation (one of my favorite notes) gives a vintage 70s or 80s nightclub appeal. It takes a certain type of person to get away with this one, and it is STRONG - so watch for overspraying. In the right dose, on the right person, with the right vibe, this scent is a power play. Confident, worldly, and takes no BS.
Smelled this on a lady today and I thought it was awesome. Smelled mostly like patchouli with some other interesting things going on. Smells like a real fragrance, that is not like a modern synthetic aroma chemical dominant sugar bomb that most modern femme frags are going for. Seems like a unisex niche frag. Probably pick up a bottle if I find it at a good price.
My most hated perfume Of. All. Time. Sure to ruin my mood and everyone's around me. And it won't be a secret because strangers will pipe up. I have given Aromatics Elixir so many chances - several times every decade since the 80's. I thought I'd mature into it, but fortunately for me, I'm cursed to have a great nose. Bottle - meet trash can.
Aromatics elixir to me is the epitome of a comfort scent, it not only smells medicinal but acts as a calming, protective veil. On the other hand… people may despise you for wearing it. One spray and a woman next to me on the train had a visceral reaction. Half an hour coughing fit, shielding her nose. When she got up she cussed at me! “that fucking perfume…Jesus Christ!!!” Definitely a first for me, but oh well, too bad lady, I think you’ll survive… and I’m never going to quit wearing it!
I tried a sample today, this perfume is so rich in textıure, which ı love about 70s perfumes, amongst all notes listed in fragrantica i slightly smelled myrrh at heart, on my skin it doesnt smell heavy, i would say it smells liike a forest or meadow after the rain, it is not an old lady perfume i is rather young and unisex as boy can wear.
I bought this as a joke. Four years ago. For my collection. I just sprayed it for the first time since. I am pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't wear it personally, but it is a very rich and beautiful scent. Very in your face and strong. I don't think most people would find it flattering. But it's unique. I can respect that.
Clinique's Aromatics Elixir is a rather amazing formulation. After smelling it, every other thing sampled that day at the department store became only an indistinct blur of variously synthetically sweetened flowers and fruit. Only Aromatics Elixir stood alone on a high precipice emitting its astounding fragrance of ...God. Knows. What??? Of course, examining the notes, one can begin to understand what is happening, ...at least a little. And probably every note, and the chemical underlying it, is contributing something to this remarkable blend, ...but it's also clear that four notes, all from the base, are the main heavy hitters: • the greenly volatile, resinous shriek of (synthetic or fractionated) patchouli • the bitter honey of (synthetic) oakmoss • the sweetly acrid tang of some kind of incense smoke • the dirty, sweaty earthiness of vetiver But even still, the total is still more than the sum of its parts.
Aramis 900 with another name.
the most cold and crisp scent that has ever warmed me. Aromatics Elixir is, aptly, a potion of fragrance notes that are uncoordinated on paper but completely cohesive in execution. herbal and green notes give way to the earthy and inky tones of oakmoss combined with incense and resinous woods to supply a most honest take on earthiness in perfume. the shadows that this scent is hiding are, ironically, the bitter and astringent facets of verbena and chamomile that, when paired with the warmth of the patchouli and vetiver, are the most domineering parts of the entire composition. spray it on a paper or in the cap and you don't grasp the full complexity of the makeup. Aromatics Elixir must be trusted with time and patience (and, most importantly, a miserly application lest you choke in a cloud of overwhelming greenery) before the true and haunting realities of the perfume are filched into focus. in the challenging and, admittedly, unpleasant silage of the first half an hour of this perfume, therein lies a most truthful replication of nature and its habits. perfumery like this reminds one how difficult a first impression can be, how the moment you meet a person is hardly a reflection of the whole of the relationship. how could you know that the person to whom you run whenever you need a deep breath that feels warm instead of cold would be that person to you when you met them in the smog-filled streets of your hometown? what honestly makes you think that the first thirty seconds of interaction will truly make or break your chance with the love of your life? I was not initially struck by Aromatics Elixir, but found it irresistibly alluring among a wall of mediocre modern releases and, in an act of trust, allowed her to be vulnerable with me. once she stopped hiding her nature behind those bitter herbs, I found myself running to her in times of change and in need of comfort. if my perfume is an honest reflection of who I am, let it be Aromatics Elixir: bold and audacious, yet particularly difficult to stomach.
Aromatic Elixir is an odd perfume, yet I love it. my consciousness about perfumes started in the late 70s so I have known all the mossy chypres of then. Miss Dior, Chanel No.19, Ysatis, 'Y' d'Yves Saint Laurent, Ivoire of Balmain, Mitsouko, of older fame, Estée by Estée Lauder, the first Private Collection, etc. Aromatics Elixir seems to tenfold the aspirations, expectations, presence and intensity of all her sisters nevertheless in such refinement. I love this ultrastrength bc my 'perfumial puberty' laid in the 80s where the perfumes went ballistic. yet AO is strange when someone 'uninitiated' stumbles upon it and probably smells medical utensils, chemical wafts, herbal density. my experience says these two 'perceptions' go simultaneously through each other: the one where the perfume imposes itself as one dense, inescapable athmosphere; and the other where the multitude of ingredients and variety of flowers, spices, herbs, really do come to the fore facettuous and in a complex layeredness. I always have to have one flacon present although my collection prevents ever still an emptying out of whichever (heady, heavy, rich, too-much) perfume I would want that day (and moment). AO is an indispensable presentism in its treacherously simple flacon. (2019) this perfume I have since the 1980s. of course it is one of the severe Chypres of the 1970s from Estée Lauder (Clinique) with Estée (1968), Aliage (1972), Azurée (1969), Private Collection (1973, I had the perfume), Eau de Private Collection [1980s] & debatable if a downright Chypre but I think so, White Linen (1978). from Aromatics Elixer at a given moment I also bought the 'Aromatics Elixir Perfumer's Reserve Clinique for women' (2011) and thoroughly enjoyed this further concentrated perfume for which was already an 'Elixir' itself. yet quickly gave it away to a woman Friend in Montana when it was still possible to Fly-Off Perfumes. the perfume we have here is a Legend. Immediately I loved it (I think I met it in 1974 and from the 1970s I was equally enamored by Chypres (Y, Ivoire, Jean-Louis Scherrer [1], No19, Cristalle, Mitsouko etc.) but what drove me foremost were the Classic Perfumes of which some were Chypres (Miss Dior, Fidji although I found it somewhat 'light', arguably Rive Gauche). what strikes me again when spritzing this perfume is the Astringent effect of the perfume. Sage, Lemon Verbena, Aldehydes clearly detectable and loved, even Chamomile together shall have a sinister working in this. further it is the stifling (but loved) Super Imposition of the Oakmoss which is legendary plus the Patchouli, Brazilian Rosewood, Vetiver, Bergamot, Musk, Sandelwood and Coriander which all lend this perfume a sturdy Woody, Spicy, Frisky and Resinous (Incense) Backbone. for the Poitrine there is the Wealth of Flowers certainly and decidedly throdding, flowing forward: Rose, Carnation, Geranium, Chamomile, Ylang, Orris, Tuberose, Jasmine, Orange Blossom all lend the perfume next to its austerity intuitively seeping in an as Formal as Softening Floralcy and Flowing Powderiness. of course it is the alchemy which takes care of the perfume in its entirety. the Back-Straightening Effect of this perfume actually is a relief. lateron the 1980s will fullheartedly explode. with all perfumes that I still love to Death. yet that this Category also had its impact on my perfumial habitualisations is as either irreversible as Dramatically Hysterical even if these terms will never have passed 'the Brief'. (I now am also thinking about Creed's underappreciated Hell of a Perfume Irisia.) the quasi-similarities are unmistakable. (2026)
Starting off with a moment of comparison with Mitsouko: Mitsouko is fruity and perhaps a finer more feminine chypre, sweeter and slightly bitter but the fruitiness is unmistakable there. Aromatics elixir is heavier and thicker with patchouli but dries down to an ultimate autumnal forest fragrance that is luxurious, plush and irresistable. Imagine wet forest soil, the piquant scent of dried leaves, resinous woods and a beautiful chamomile tied together by patchouli. It could require some nose training if you recently sniffed a lot of sweet fragrances. It is absolutely mystical, aromatherapeutical and addictive. Edit: i love to wear chypres after i've worn sweeter fragrances for a while and most of all on rainy spring and summerdays. I usually wear Mitsouko for those days but i have extended my collection with a few others among which aromatics elixir. I am familiar with it bc of my mom. Anyway i've been wearing it for two days in a row for work now and my vest is saturated with it. And my oh my this is the most perfect aromatic plush luxurious fragrance cloud i'm surrounded by. So delicious!!! And very clean to my nose also. Just very aromatic🤩😍 I ordered the deodorant and body lotion as well. This makes me feel sophisticated and mature in a gentlewomanly way 💚
Smells like hot summer on the Adriatic in a greenhouse full of wizened orange trees where an old woman chain-smokes and perhaps hexes an enemy or two. Not wintry to me at all. The silage is intense but manageable with restrained application. Very chamomile- and sage-forward with surprising florality in the dry-down. Rich and deep and almost bitter. Lasts all day. Rejects modernity. I wear it when the sun is out and I want to feel more powerful than I am.
I was a chypre hater, but this might have converted me. It's majestic. There are layers upon layers and layers to it; chamomile, herbs, flowers, incense, wood, moss, wet soil, dirt. Leaves gathered on the autumn forest floor, poisonous mushrooms peeking through the rotting pile. A spring meadow in full bloom. The swamp witch's cottage, where a potion is bubbling in a cauldron as tendrils of smoke rise and bundles of herbs rustle overhead. An abandoned church, the damp stone overtaken by lichen and ivy, the church pews swallowed by moss. I can see now why it's so polarizing. Limit to 1-2 sprays max, as this stuff is nuclear. Masterpiece.
To an unimaginative person--church incense from the 70s. Be prepared for comments of this sort if you wear this scent... To the imaginative, this smells like leaning over the wooden pews, staring at the ghost of a beautiful woman in the smoke of the church incense as your eyes relax. Its so warm and deep, a very strong recognizable scent, one spray is enough, it will stay in your hair. On a younger person it is so unique, a fall scent for sure.
I've got the edt version, and haven't had a sniff of the edp version as yet, so can't make any comparisons. From the bottle, I got a definite potpourri smell, all dried flower petals, and a dark blood rose, with a delicate powder adding to the lovely smell. On my hand, the start was a bit rough, with a sharp sweet smell, akin tomolasses... I was a bit worried it might turn into that sharp, sweet tang I often associate with nail polish... Luckily, a beautiful delicate pink rose started blooming, and the sharp smell became much softer, and disappeared. Along with this lovely rose, I got powder, but as if the powder itself was made from crushed, dried rose petals. The aura is simply magnificent, and it's difficut to explain, but it smells perfumy. It's like a woman who wears rose powder on her warm body, and topped it off with a woody, and plush rose perfume. The rose isn't dewy, or fresh, but almost dried, and dusted slightly with a sprinkling of wood. I often get this feeling with fragrances that have oakmoss in it... that plush, almost refined powdery veil. It's magnificent. I don't really get herbs, or many of the notes mentioned, but they contribute to the overall feeling of the fragrance, as I can tell it's complex, but not quite what I'm smelling. This is my first sniff, so I'll discover more as I get to know this beauty. In regards to strength... it's subtle, and probably not as strong as the original. I don't think you'd clear the room if you sprayed on a few sprays. It's the start of autumn here in New Zealand, so this beauty is just perfect for the season. I'm looking forward to trying the edp.
this was my mother’s signature perfume, and I cannot see this bottle without instantly being transported to her getting ready to go somewhere. I have to buy a bottle of this just for nostalgia sake. I’m biased. I could never hate this perfume.
(Bottle c. mid-1980s) Hey! We have an example of Estée Lauder being able to make a beautiful perfume via a different brand that they own…! Now, granted, this happened more than 50 years ago, but the novelty is still very noteworthy even this many years on. No less noteworthy - certainly more so - is just how good this perfume is. For one, this still has one of the best chamomile accords of any perfume I have ever smelled. Once the bergamot and galbanum dispenses, which happens very quickly in bottles prior to the early 2000s, the gently honeyed, hay like and grassy, pale yellow floral of chamomile rings true. Additional depth is not needed at this point, but rose and coriander come into play anyway to add to the breadth instead. The cool woody character of the coriander gives the honey character levity, while the rose makes the pale yellow floral character more saturated and vivid, turning it almost gold. It makes me want to open my bag of pure, dried chamomile flowers I use for tea and give them a big whiff but I won’t because I do not want to be disappointed by a comparison to the real thing. As time slowly marches on the rose becomes more prominent, powdery and elegant. With the spiciness it comes across nearly as an ultra-vivid carnation, helped by a headiness also becoming more apparent and growing. Then finally, here it comes, the heady and unctuous muguet flanked on both sides by a properly indolic jasmine. The jasmine is also allowed a bit of its citrusy and green facets here, but the star is that creamy and savory muguet. Then comes the surprise, which is that Aromatics Elixir - an oak moss/chypre or amber bomb it is not! This is where it steers clear of many of its predecessors and affiliates by focusing on a clean, musky, earthiness of dried top-soil patchouli and floral musks. Some resins, balsams, and a touch of animalics live here too but it is inarguably and determinedly trying to be cleanly earthy without resorting to oak moss - and it does so utterly beautifully. Every time I smell this heart to base transition of Aromatics Elixir I can feel my muscles relax, my heart slow down, and my mind empty in ecstasy. And this is where I must detract a bit from others who laud this perfume, rightfully so as I do. It is strong, yes, and it projects and sillages like warfare going off, yes, but it is still restrained. The Lauder compositions of the relative period it is so frequently compared to have a brash American confidence to them, largely thanks to the oak moss and animalics, in conjunction with heavier amber facets in some case, that will control a room without asking permission. Beautiful though they are, they do not know how to not announce themselves nor to not be the focus of attention. Aromatics Elixir will stand in the middle of the room, all eyes on it, without saying a word. That clean, ethereal, radiant character is like the sun shining through the window of the room - impossible to ignore but not trying to take anything from anyone either. It’s the stunning beauty that everyone has noticed but no one wants to work up the courage to talk with to find out why they are so quiet. It does not matter if you are a man or a woman, work up the courage to see if Aromatics Elixir will hang on your arm. Now.
Looking at all the reviews I can see it is an off or on scent. As a man that likes the different, I decided to try this Bombshell of a perfume. Wow, on its own I get a Hermes bel ami vetiver vibe, Must be the stale cigarette that shows up on my skin( ex- Smoker), on the wife it is subtle more floral, so wanted to over lay the single spritz with one of my fav's Aramis Tuscany, OMG, almost perfection. Ill run this for a few days and see how we go.
As someone who loves aromatic scents, Aromatics Elixir is proof that you can have too much of a good thing in fragrances. The opening is pleasant enough (if a bit strong), but the drydown is a mess. Imagine a weed smoking coworker that that never bathes, yet *always* insists on talking to you up close so you're forced to bear their stench, and that's Aromatics Elixir to my nose.
This perfume deserves its on spot on an FBI most wanted list. It is not an aroma. It is a stench. This is the scent of a chain-smoking department store manager who has been around since the 70s. Maybe wear this if you’re trying to get out of jury duty and you want to offend everyone around you.
The only vintage fragrance I can truly say I’m in love with. It’s unisex and works beautifully on men as well. Warm, rich, and deep — full of beautiful complexities that slowly unfold, making you more captivated with every layer. The color of the juice perfectly reflects the depth of the scent. Woody, aldehydic, aromatic, and stunning. I’m crazy about this perfume — nothing else compares to it.
This smells like Mitsouko on me. The secret is to spray very lightly otherwise it can be very heavy and sour. On clothing it is very masculine and I’ve mistaken it for Aramis. Also similar to Picasso Pablo and EL Knowing.
Bülent Ersoy ve Muazzez Abacının sıktığı parfüm
Today is Imbolc; spring returns - snowdrops in the underbrush, rain drunk cedar forest, and hope-filled birdsong at dawn. Promise is welcomed with pregnant green lushness. Hello AE.
Classic. It smells very balsamic to me and tickles the nose. I need a bottle of this always. I've never had a perfume last so long, and keeps myself smelling my wrists all day.
