My dad used to travel abroad a lot for work when I was growing up. When he came home, me and my sister were always eager to see if he had brought us something from the tax free shops at the airport. One time, in the early 90s, he brought home a set of miniature bottles of designer fragrances. It contained Poême, Trésor, Paloma Picasso, Safari, Temptations, Arpège. And this fragrance as well. I still have them, and Giò is my favorite, along with Poême. It still smells just as sweet, floral and spicy, a lovely fragrance. When I was a young girl, Giò and Poême were the only ones I didn’t think smelt too vintage. My dad has since passed away and now those bottles are one of many things that remind me of him, and I treasure them. I also learned recently that it’s been discontinued, so now this fragrance feels even more special to me, a true gem!
My mother wore this, she barely ever wears perfume but in the 90s tax free shopping was a thing and we were in Italy and Armani was a very mainstream brand then, before there were so many… Lancôme for makeup and Armani and CK for perfume. She had it forever and rarely used it and by the time I wanted it, she must’ve thrown it out, anyway the reviews here made me so curious I ordered a bottle on Vinted for 130€ it smells like I remember, like a bouquet of white flowers, classic, classy, timeless but if I could get that 130€ back I’d invest in something else, if you like tuberose- try sabia Bianca! Or tuberose and moss by Rouge. For those old classics tresor and poeme by Lancôme
If anyone would like to trade something for this I have 2 vintage sizes. I want to keep one. One is a mini and the other is a used 35ml. Has about 1/4 of the bottle left. Still smells the same to me (I didn’t wear it a lot. I was in love with the lighter sister Acqua Di Gio. ) I would also sell for a reasonable price …just won’t pay shipping. PM if you have any interest. I can provide photos etc… She is still a HEADY one 💓
Jubilee scents do a dupe of this...❤️❤️❤️
Armani please bring this iconic perfume back - my all time favourite - always , always had complments when wearing this fragrance as it was so unique - wore this on my wedding day in 1999, I still have a tiny bit left to reminisce !
Masterpiece perfume, a real perfume not like the fruit punch My Way. When can we expect a re-launch???
Rest in peace, Giorgio 😔
30 years later, I think about this perfume. When Aqua di Gio came out, everyone wore it, while this remained mine. This perfume will wear you. You don’t forget its personality. Floral, spicy, jammy, sweet (but not in the gourmand sweetness of today- it was subtle, deep and oh so sexy!) I despised Aqua di Gio for its superficial charm, now I hate it even more. It lingers, while this gem is discontinued. I don’t care what you do, Armani, reformulate, dillute, whatever, but bring back this fragrance.
Once I got past the top notes (the heavy cloves give me a dentist office/toothpaste vibe). this evolves into a complex tuberose that really warms up the coldest winter days/nights- I'm glad I didn't give up on it too soon- Thanks, K., for sharing this gem with me-
This is my absolute favorite scent OF ALL TIME! When I found out it was being discontinued, I was so upset and then lept into action! I purchased an entire case. I am now down to two bottles and can’t image not having it in my collection. It’s an absolute masterpiece and needs to be brought back! Even if only as a limited edition so I can buy up a few dozen more! Haha I wear it sparingly now, and ALWAYS get compliments on it! People are heartbroken when they hear they cannot purchase it. I have tried hundreds of fragrances and nothing will even hold a candle to this gem! 12/15/25- I wanted to add, I purchased Montale Gold flowers. It is also now discontinued 😡. In my opinion, it isn’t a dupe. I’m fortunate to still have Gio and when tried side by side, gold flowers is missing something. However, if you can find it, it may scratch the itch. For me, nothing will do but the original. It’s the one fragrance I just can’t compromise on! I need this to come back!!
BRING THIS PERFUME BACK!!!!
i know i tried this back in the 90s, and now that i am trying again it does seem familiar. it opens with tons of peach, tuberose and gardenia. there is some amber, orris, woody and citrus notes more subtly in the background. the peach is so juicy i can almost taste it-this is mouth watering. after 10-15 minutes i get a spicy hint of cloves and carnation. mostly a peachy subtly spicy tuberose. warm, voluptuous and gorgeous.
Gio makes me feel like a bee hypnotise by the overpowering scent of the golden nectar, creating a confusing mixture of desire and entrapment.
One of 2 fragrances that started my love of perfume. (the other is L'eau d'Issey) Spicy, sweet and sooooo sexy. I have a 3.4 still sealed and stored in a dark drawer that rarely experiences temp fluctuations & the other 3.4 is open, used sparingly & likewise kept in a dark, cool area. Every time i see Aqua di Gio my heart screams "IMPOSTER!!! How DARE You LIve On when the ORIGINAL has Faded from Memory!" I cherish this, and wear it only on the most special occasions in Autumn & Winter. I was inspired to dig out my open bottle (its still almost full!!!) sprayed a it and the blast from the past hit me. I loved this sooo much!!! What I had been wearing in its place was the Prada Paradoxe Intense. Other than being spicy sweet the 2 are nothing alike. LOL!
Holy moly... I don't usually like tuberose, but this is tuberose done in a masterful way. The spices are very zesty and the clove and carnation really stand out, so hot. Woooh!!! Gio is an epic 1990's beauty. If she was a woman, she'd be no doubt Cindy Crawford.
I still miss this; gloriously, beautifully sexy. Best times of my life. Why did they discontinue it? Whyyyyyyy*screams*
I have a vintage mini dabber that I will consider swapping for something of similar value. And when I say vintage and mini that is what I mean. Truly. I ran upstairs to check and she has not turned..at all. She is however VERY potent. Decades of macerating time can do such lovely things ☺️. I have my old school 1990s 35 ml with 1/4 of the bottle left so I really don’t need the mini. Gio was never a total love of mine (her green sister Acqua di Gio stole my heart back in those days) but wow definitely brought back some memories. So much spicy floral warmth. PM me if you are interested.
The mere mention of this scent, and I can easily recall some of it's notes and feeling of warmth. I wore it a lot back in the day, and now as I am thinking more about fragrance again, I'm sad to find it is discontinued.
Can't believe this has been discontinued...why...WHY?!! *screams*. I wore this when I was younger and it was everything I wanted to be: fruity, woodsy, sophisticated. A really classy little number. I'm glad reading these reviews that I can attempt to rediscover it through Montale's Gold Flowers which I've now added to my ever expanding want list. And I'm glad I was able to douse myself in it back in the day.
I must have gone through two, three bottles of it back in the 90's. I'll check Golden Flowers to see how close it is. The best times of my life 🫶😪
Can anyone tell me if there is a notable difference between the older version with the clear, astronaut head looking pull off cap, and the other sold gold pull off cap? Clear one has batch codes that start with "U" and I think mostly made by Cosmair, while the solid gold one has longer batch codes that start with "3" or other numbers, I can't tell who the manufacturer is but the font on the sticker looks different than the made by Cosmair ones. I would post in forums but I feel they move slow and I don't see much discussion of Gio (if I am searching correctly). Feel free to message me if response is not appropriate to clutter up the reviews. Thanks.
I have a sample vial in a neat little plastic case that's shaped like the bottle. It's my first experiene with this scent, and it's just wonderful. Fruity, tropical floral, and a hint of warm spice on a creamy dreamy base of resin. As others have noted, it's very tragic that this wasn't more popular and therefore got discontinued. Wings and Spellbound are similar but not the same. Good luck to those who seek to find Gio in the wild... She is elusive!
Armani, just bring it back!
Another kindred spirit here! How I loved this scent in the 90s. It was my one bottle of perfume for several years back then. I ordered a vintage mini through eBay, but I can't wait to try the recommended Gold Flowers - thank you for sharing the suggestion! The other night I was at Dillard's and sampled Armani Si for the first time, and the opening actually reminded me of Gio - the memory came right into my head. It's not a dupe - but I wondered, did a little bit of Gio get rolled into Si?...... I'd love to spend some more time with that one too!
My favourite scent ever! I have managed to get supplies over the years, but am down to the last few dregs in a miniature bottle, which I literally just take out to sniff occasionally. I really wish I could wear it again, but the only bottles I have seen online are too much. I have Amarige and Giorgio Wings, which I like, but are a poor substitute, so I was thrilled to find this page and the suggestion of Montale Gold Flowers, which I can't wait to try!
I remember smelling this when it first came out, at a point I wasn't confident enough as a man to buy what I liked. I remember spraying it on and loving it. It was discontinued very quickly because it was a huge flop - then came Aqua di Gio and the rest is history. One of the great tragedies of modern perfumery.
Ce parfum est une obsession qui ne me quitte pas depuis 27 ans. Quel dommage qu’il ne soit plus disponible.
@Gemsense, you're an echo to my thoughts. So happy to see there still are people of good taste (and good sense) left in this world.
Ah... this number! I bought it when yet aged 24 and it made me feel so sophisticated with its spicy, warm, intriguing notes! Every time I wore it I felt so grown up and ready to face the world and life with all its challenging experiences head on. It had a feisty personality, leaving space for no other, loud but in the classiest way possible. It said "out of my way... please" and I could almost imagine a charming smile accompany such statement! The clove with the mandarin and myrrh... so sensual, so confident! Sleek and a world aside from all others - that is how it made me feel: empowered. What a masterpiece!
