Boss Number One

This stuff is so bad. I can't find anyone who likes it. It's so bad sometimes I let other people smell it just to have a laugh at their reaction. I have met exactly one person woman that liked it. One. Out of everyone. The only reason to buy this is entertainment value. I would not wear it. People have compared it to lysol, urinal cakes, medicine, and the reaction to smelling it is almost always to recoil in shock and disgust. Seriously. But again. If you collect fragrances, it's worth a buy for entertainment value.

From a vintage bottle - Chanel no. 5 pour homme anyone?

i have a vintage bottle with the vertical pin stripes. Its much different than the modern formula which is lighter, less sticky and think smelling. I like it, but its certainly a vibe.

On me, a few sprays projects insane even after a work day, it simply just stay. Still, even after the changes

it becomes more attractive as it dries & draws you closer, its such an authentic masculinity displayed here . i hate lavender but love many fougere scents (its complicated) but i cant say i notice it here that well thankfully . before i saw the list i thought it was mainly carnation here, it could be a trick from the top notes plus dry florals . its not a super far projecting scent nor is it particularly “heavy”, so its versatile enough for everyday . a subtle human-ness to it in the later hours of wear & the green touches keep it youthful enough . a must try if you’re interested in vintage . mines recent but im interested in trying a much older bottle .

It's almost perfect. I want to like it, I really do. But it's just so strong. It almost stings the nose. I don't mind layering it, but on it's own? Not for me. Maybe I'm just too sensitive to lavender and some of the sharper floral notes. I can't tell. But it's still nice.

I absolutely love Hugo Boss #1. I can understand why the low testosterone crowd are scared to wear this. In the winter I like to layer it with Kouros to make it extra pissy. This scent separates the men from the boys and is a delight to wear. Beware: Only for the confident and competent. There's nothing poorly blended about this masterpiece. One of the best manly scents EVER!!! Smells like eloquence without having to say a word.

I just got my hands on a newer formulation bottle. The one with the silver cap that's made in Spain, I am quite a bit disappointed. I cannot make out the notes everyone is raving about, what I smell is the green apple and bergamot giving way to some weird oiliness with tobacco and in the end there's some faint oakmoss and sandalwood that also comes in, I am not sure I can smell the honey at all in here. I mean I get a faint idea of what this is supposed to be but there's no way that that's what everyone is raving about, it's way lighter and top heavy and almost sour with a weird pissiness that may be the honey but it seems the base is missing altogether. Could someone confirm what's going on? It could be a bad batch or that the fragrance needs to mature a bit, it's somehow still wearable just not enjoyable. I am thinking on pulling the trigger on a vintage decant could anyone advice if there's a significant difference?

I have an older pinstripe bottle that I managed to pick up on clearance at some random Perfumania for $40. It was not love at first sniff. My first wearing was on a warm sunny day, and it just gave me the feeling of when you're outside and you're sweating and then you cool down and you can still smell your dried sweat. Upon further wearings, however, I've really come to like this fragrance. To my nose, this opens with more of the juniper and caraway, with hints of dried citrus. Then on the dry down I get the honey and tobacco, and that dry sweaty scent, but now it reads more as animalic but in a very humanized way. Unmistakably masculine and very 80s, but it definitely sits in its own lane. Ignore any comparisons to other animalic scents (I'm looking at you Kouros -- Kouros is more musky / raunchy, Number One is more sweaty / gritty.) Anyway, I love this scent and now I'm kicking myself for not picking up 3 bottles for $99, which was the other discount the shop was offering. It'll probably go back up on the shelf for summer, but I'm going to be loving life once those we get more warm (but not hot) fall days return.

All these guys complaining about it smelling pissy or urinal like, haven’t smelt many fragrances from the 70s and 80s. This smells like a classy fougere that was ahead of its time. Bankers, CEO’s, Executives etc all wore this scent back in the day. This fragrance is a Hall of Fame in my books alongside Boss Spirit.

I sincerely apologize to those who like it, but to me, it's smell like a old unwashed man😔🙏, just pure disgust to me, the man smells better than the perfume.

Reviewing a vintage batch from '92: Opens with this refined soft-powdery barshop zinginess with a hint of sweetness. Very familiar scent. Slightly reminds me of a mix between YSL Kouros and Versace The Dreamer. However, 10 minutes into drying down the urinous note develops in the mids and for me that is a dealbreaker. 5/10

P&G pinstripe version. Not the beastly beast that I expected; rather it's a smooth, balanced, gentlemanly blend wherein the notes are very well harmonized (on me, no pissiness). Staying power is respectable, and I don't think it's too heavy for warmer weather. I liken it to a older gent with a resonant baritone--clearly heard with no need to raise his voice. Can't comment on the latest/final version but, assuming it's an earlier release, No. 1's status as a classic is deserved.

Good barbershop old style fragrance, sadly let down by unimpressive longevity and sillage. Smells masculine with a good mix of herbs with a good base, but becomes a skin scent within two hours for me, completely disappearing in 4hrs.

I had high hopes for this one, the note breakdown is interest, but on my skin... piss. Throughout the whole drydown it's piss city. Smells like if a bunch of guys went to a business convention but all collectively pissed their pants 1 day prior. Not blind buy safe AT ALL. If you want to smell like pee pants, get Number One Projection: 7/10 Sillage: 5/10 Longevity: 7/10 Scent: piss/10

This is amazing! Truly an 80's gangster scent, wearing a pinstripe suit jacket or stuff. I love this composition, the animalic opening, the citrus, herbals and the lavender, and then, the aromatic honey and the tobacco / oakmoss drydown. Kinda like a less edgy Kouros, highly recommend it. Not for compliment babies though. This is for men, real men.

I like it. Extremely masculine scent. Classic. Better for a bit older gentleman. Cooler weather and evenings out. Honey, Tobacco, Patchouli and Sandalwood. Some of the main notes.

Soapy, classy and masculine. It gives this vibe of a vintage soap but it doesn’t smell dated or like “old man”, it’s just different from modern scents.

New bottle is a nice spicy fougere open; I get basil, rose, lavender, honey, and some other hard to decipher spices right off the bat. As the middle notes come forward the rose gets stronger with some jasmine interacting towards a smooth transition to mossy sandalwood finish with a hint of musk. I was transported back in time to picking up my wife from Dillard's in 2001 shortly after we were married and walking through Paradise Valley mall fragrance section on my way to embarrass her by buying lingerie at her station (she worked retail counter in Juniors section while getting her Masters). This was a sensory flashback Ratatouille style. Really, it's an incredible bargain; I will buy it again when/if I run out because usually the new formulations of the old school fragrances don't hold up, but this was really nice. I also had a sample of the first generation vintage so I'll provide those notes as well. It comes off as darker at first, more animalic from the pissy honey, before shifting closely to the new bottle version; the vintage is less spicy and not really floral, but woodier, and dare I say a little manlier? I may be imagining it, but I get more tobacco in the vintage than I do in the new bottle.

This review is for the vintage formulation in the pinstripe bottle. It’s a really interesting fragrance. I get a touch of artemisia, a subtle honey and slightly animalic, pissy accord with tobacco, with moss in the base. Objectively, it’s not a universal mass appealing fragrance. Therefore, I was torn between a “like” and a “love,” but ultimately went with love because I reach for it often.

Boss Number One was part of my Boxing Day Nostalgia haul • My dad used to wear this in the early 1990s, and I remember stealing some sprays every once in a while. • If you're a man in his 40s-60s, you will remember this scent, and so will most ladies in your age bracket. • Smells ok, but it's definitely starting to show its age, i.e., it's clearly not a modern scent. • If you overspray, you'll likely get whiffs of urinal cake. Less is more with this one.

From the very nose of Drakkar Noir this gem. It's like a Chuck Norris vs. Van Damme kumite in the year of the Lord 2025. Spray one on each arm and paint your face war blue.

Nope. I've had it for ages, and I tried it again the last couple of days, but came to the conclusion I'm gonna give it away to someone who does like it. It's heavy and in-your-face, and not in a good way to me. Most reviews I see that are positive use words like '80's', 'powerhouse', 'dominant', 'for strong executives'. Well yeah, Gordon Gecko wore this 100% but what's up with the sudden admiration for 80s Wall Streets yuppies? They don't scream 'stylish' to me. In fact, I kinda think scents used by people trying to overcompensate. You don't get character from a bottle of parfume: it should subtly accentuate the character you have. Anyway: musk, honey, just all-round very heavy. Masculine? For sure, but overly so. If I would smell this on someone, I would in fact respect them less because it feels like they (and this smell) are trying too hard: It just screams "Look at me being masculine!" to me.

I love this fragrance, reminds me of early 80's. It is animalic, somewhat reminds me of gym lockeroom in a good way. The longer this fragrance drys down the better it gets. If you are tired of the sweet vanilla tacky fragrances, this is a very masculine fragrance. It can be a little offensive for some, it is boss status.

Hot take: Old man fragrances are the new femme fragrances. On a woman this shows up as a soft, warm, mildly sweet fragrance. Rose, Lily, Iris, Honey, Warm Cinnamon, and a touch of Leather. I've worn this for years. Men and women alike like this fragrance on me and read it as feminine in that context. The only think really fighting it is the oakmoss, but as we all know the artificial mosses used these days are underwhelming cokpared to what they were. Other "men's powerhouse" fragrances that are great on women: Georgio Beverly Hills, Quorum (if you are the right kind of woman), Classic Old Spice, possibly Grey Flannel, I'm sure there are others.

A tip for using Boss Number One is to spray it on your clothes. The scent that emanates from the fabric is incredible. My spray routine for this is chest (inside), sides of the neck (half fabric, half skin), back (inside). And then a couple over each side of the shirt, over the fabric itself for better performance. 8-10 sprays will have you covered for the day. Damn, this is good

I absolutely love this cologne. The spicy woody tone is always a favorite of mines. It reminds me a lot of the times where I went to family events and the like and my Father would always put this on. It reminds me a lot of his youth.

Just got in the most recent batch bottle. This is the most honey forward fragrance I’ve smelt from the 70/80s powerhouse fragrances. A lot of them have it listed in the notes yet I can never detect it. But it’s certainly prominent here. My uncle had a vintage version of this (pin stripe bottle and box). It was one of his signature scents. I’ve remember stealing sprays and sniffs when I stayed with him. It was a lot more spicier and animalistic with a civet pissy note. Without a doubt that has all been tamed down here in general with the scent as well. For those wanting a civet dominant honey like this used to be I’d highly recommend MFKs Absolute Pour le Soir. When I tested boss number one on skin I was instantly reminded of it.
