Vintage

A very common 30’s+ man ‘aroma.’ Well blended, soft spice, drop of soft sweet lavender fern suede, touch of green & dry herbal tobacco, .. almost like a mellow alcohol-free aftershave tonic. Very much a dad/ uncle scent. I catch whiffs of B&BW classic flannel and Burberry London here in the dry down w/ the cinnamon tobacco. Pleasant pick up for Fall, Winter, Spring.

It goes without saying that the biggest flaw with JV fragranaces is that they're EDT and not EDP. That being said, JV Vintage is unapologetically masculine, and has an old school vibe that you won't find in many fragrance lines released today. It's clean, herbaceous, fresh, sweet, spicy and a really nice chypre/barbershop fragrance. For £20 at a discounter for a 125ml bottle, Vintage was a great find. 8/10

This was polarizing kinda, and what throws me off is how light it feels compared to what it’s built around. The base hints at something that should stick, develop, and carry presence, but it just moves on too fast and never really settles into itself. You get flashes of what it’s trying to be, then it’s gone, which makes it feel like it needed more substance behind it to actually follow through.

So for me, I've had this and was wearing it daily about 10 years ago.... my wife loves it.... it's masculine while not overbearing... very pleasant... and for a noob about fragrances, an easy reach. Fast forward now I've sampled over 150 fragrances and have a drawer full of decants and own many high end niche perfumes and I've obviously become a snob lol .... so Vintage just doesn't cut it any more for special occasions, especially performance wise.... and I was looking for a long time for something similar... I think it was the tobacco note that every time I got something similar from another house it was too strong or paired with something too nuclear or ambroxan or something and it was always a turn off. I tried almost every single Montobacco from Ormond Jayne and many Xerjoff's... hoping to find something similar to this but I was always disappointed. Then one day I was sampling some Roja's and to my surprise, Great Britian was very "Vintage like" ... obviously very different, Great Britian is way funkier with a more animalic leather and it's definitely darker and more luxurious then Vintage is.... but the spirit of Vintage is in there with the leather and oakmoss and all the spices, etc... now Great Britian doesn't have the tobacco but the animalic leather with the balsams almost has that fine cigar like tobacco scent. Vintage is definitely lighter and good for every day but Great Britian for me is for special occasions. I really love it and I'm so happy I've found my niche version of Vintage that lasts all day.

The opening has a combination of sweet and bitter notes. After the first couple minutes a slight sour green note. Not acrid, like a citrusy sour. It smells very nice, but also very generic. As it dries, I can not detect cinnamon or jasmine. Its cool and crisp with that sour bitter green accord. The tobacco is not smoky, but very leafy. A very woody smell with the tobacco, wood notes, patchouli and fir. But it doesnt scream "foresty" at all to me. There is a sweetness that carries, to my nose its the rhubarb. Its a favorite flavour and smell of mine and so its very recognizable to be. I would say the spicy notes kick in about 20 or so minutes into the dry down. The base is all solidly there, excluding tonka, i cant detect a hint of it. Its a nice, very safe smell that is highly versatile. Very professional and office friendly. Makes an excellent fall and early spring smell. While nothing about it strikes me as unique, its a safe blind buy for someone into masculine oldschool smells. Its sillage is pretty close, and doesnt reallt create a large scent bubble. Women will definitelt appreciate this on a man. Its very much in the vein of older masculine smells of the 70s and 80s. Varvatos tool that DNA and added a bit of a sweet and sour undertone to it, making it ever so different. If you love old spice, brut, british stirling, ralph lauren polo green, this is a nice cheapie to spray and enjoy. I feel like its a more modernized take on that perfume genre. The beauty of it is the price. It may not last a long time but its fresh, spiced nicely, and definitevly masculine.

I'm with some other reviewers here who think this scent doesn't work very well as an EDT, and should've been made as an EDP or a parfum. Nice masculine scent, but very meager performance and little staying power. I just don't think the whole leather / tobacco thing works that well in EDT form anyway. Those notes would be far more pleasing with a bit more richness and density to the composition. I'm also with those who find this scent becomes a tad medicinal once the opening fades and it hits the mids. It seems like most guys who love this scent have sentimental or memory-based reasons for doing so. In the absence of that.... I don't see much appeal here.

Rugged, Rough, Harsh (Not particularly in an negative way) It’s sometimes like Whisky Bitters Sometimes Smokey and dash of fresh sweetness Sometimes it’s honestly a little over bearing (Only given I’m 24; certainly an older gentleman fragrance. It’s sometimes hint of Santo palo(ey) Ofc it’s refined like all john varvatos. This one is closer to my lesser Favs of Jv only probably because I’m not quite old enough for it yet.

Like a warm herbal and lavender aftershave at a country club. Old money, timeless, gentle, and still very relevant. What an absolute delight.

Scent is amazing. But longevity and sillage are really lacking imo.

This was the scent that got me into colognes, I first purchased it several years ago at the recommendation of an employee and repurchased a bottle recently. It still smells just as good now as it did then, it’s clean, masculine, and makes me think of a record store, leather jackets and spice. Sitting in a bar with a cold beer and just enjoying the ambiance! While I’ve moved on to other scents I think It’s still worth a try in my opinion and an occasional wear for the night out with the wife. I think you’ll enjoy it. John Varvatos really instilled an enjoyment for designer fragrances in me.

This is a scent you put on after you shave and bath. Clean man feeling soothing scent, not more or not less. Stays with you and lingers. people with close counters will find it pleasing, while dressing casual and clean.

A unique, fresh herbal, fruity and soapy perfume. Performance is good. Comes in a well made and beautiful bottle. This is really lovely. In my top 10 ever.

Can't seem to fall in love with this fragrance due to it smelling different each time I spray it, even though all the parts of an amazing scent are there. Sometimes the rhubarb is pronounced, other times the tobacco is prominent and smokey. Sometimes all I can smell is the suede clashing with other notes in unflattering ways, while sometimes it smells mostly soapy. Getting the feeling that it reacts severely to each Celsius degree moving up or down. The most pleasant experience I've had wearing it was during a summer late afternoon/early evening, when it really came into it's own, when I also noticed that the performance/longevity are better than what they are given credit for (could catch solid whiffs of it on me over 6 hours after application). Gonna try it out more with the colder seasons coming.

I received this fragrance blind as a gift from my girlfriend --a dicey introduction to be sure. (I recall hoping against hope it would wear well on my skin.) To my delight, it did --and it's proven itself surprisingly versatile. The woodsiness speaks of autumn nights, and the warm spices smell right at home under the turtleneck sweater I save for winter. Yet as the days lengthened with the rising temperatures, I found myself reaching for it in spring (and even summer!). The sweetness of tobacco carries it through, and its boozy qualities make it especially compelling at night. That said, this fragrance isn't for everyone. It is, as others have noted, mature --but in the best ways. It smells timeless, not ageless. (It would take a VERY serious person to wear it under 30.) In that way, it is earned. It promises this in the elegance of its understated, leather bound bottle, and it delivers on that promise. And... it lasts all day, changing character as the shadows lengthen. I love this fragrance. Its special unique tobacco,different kinda of tobacco.Barbershop modern direction with kinda soapiness,the tobacco here is sweet with the tonka and dense with the suede but clean cbecause of the green notes. To me its a good one i have nothing like this and i didnt smell anything like it,not similar to any the perfumes that they mentioned,i almost try most of them...And if creed or roja or any niche house sell same scent people will buy it for sure and talk about it,cause the quality is good.If u love tobacco buy it. So the scent 7.8/10 Performance 6.5/10 Bottle 9/10

Nose Note #655 It's a funny and a little weird scent. Smells very quirky to me. This rhubarb note is a major player in the composition and it made the scent very unique. I haven't smelled anything similar. Rhubarb is very sweet and gives the scent a subtle playful, light and airy touch, but the overall composition is dark. It doesn't feel very strong, it's an average performer and I think it could work in any season. It's just a very unique scent and it is the best asset. Easy to wear yet very unique. To say that I was impressed is an understatement. 9/10, to me this is a must-try

All that I smell is sweet warm lavender. Mainstream & extremely boring.

Wow, what a beautiful scent. Right off the top there is a fresh, tangy rhubarb. Then after a minute or two the sharpness of the rhubarb smooths out into an amazing resinous fir mixed with tobacco and the slightest hint of cinnamon. This is where I fell in love with the scent the first time I smelled it. This isn't a creamy, sweet vanilla tobacco that so many other fragrances do, this is a spicy, resinous tobacco, almost verging on damp, like a moist pipe tobacco. This part of the scent lasts about an hour, and this is also where the most projection occurs. As it dries further a very prominent leather takes over. A soft leather, a worn, vintage leather. Reminiscent of, yes, an old leather jacket. That tobacco and cinnamon notes still linger though, giving depth and a hint of spice. This smell lingers until the scent fades into obscurity on your skin, approximately 5-6 hours after spraying. This fragrance reminds me of a man who doesn't need to raise his voice to make the room listen, who never brags or boasts and always makes you feel special when they talk to you, who's calm presence conveys a quiet confidence and level-headedness indicative of a man who always knows how to handle himself in any situation. Above all else, this fragrance is comfort. I love to wear this in the evenings after a hot shower washes away the work day. Ok, sure, performance isn't beast-mode, but this fragrance isn't meant to be loud and obnoxious. Sometimes a man needs to be quietly confident in who he is.

Gets better and better on the dry down, does evoke memories of the uncles or dads when you was younger, masculine and very designer smelling. The leather is very designer and the Fougere notes are so synthetic but it works really really well

As much as the original John Varvatos is intriguing and unique, this one is a lazy and generic offering for men. There is a strong dissonance for me between the name "Vintage" and its character. There is nothing "vintage" about this: it does not resemble any classic men's fougere fragrance. Instead, it is a boring mass-market appeal, unmistakably men's locker room fragrance. If you are looking for "Vintage" masculine leather scent, look at Azzaro pour Homme- a classic, old-time fougere.

Old School, but with an added exciting initial fruitiness. My best shot here is the similarity to the synthetic smell of the red and black winegums when opening a fresh bag. Soapy. Ginger. 20 minutes later, when settled, a faint whiff of rhubarbs, green apples, and maybe blueberrys can be noticed - especially when the skin is a bit warmer. Can't decide if this smells expensive and nice or if this scent rescembles something I might have stumbled upon in a nicer logotyped (but cheap) plastic bottle when going over all available showergels in the local dollar store. Like it though. Fruity old school barbershop. Thats it.

When I first purchased this a year or two ago I was seriously disappointed, it felt way to old school for me and not my style at all. Flash forward to today when I decided to give it another go and I'm actually enjoying it. It's no doubt a masculine scent but not rebellious, more of a gentleman dapper don. The leather note in the dry down is nice, not your typical leather. Is it a favorite of mine, no, but I no longer dislike it and I'm glad I own it. And when the special occasion when I feel like wearing it I will. As for performance, I would say it's pretty average, the thing about it is it lasts around 6 hours, but after the first hour it becomes an intimate scent bubble. It's not a massive projector, but it's there you get whiffs as you move around. IMO that actually works to its advantage because you don't really want to bombard anyone with this scent profile. It's relaxed, and stays close to the skin.

I love this fragrance! It's very masculine yet not at all overpowering. It reminds me of a light, sweet natural tobacco smell mixed with tanned leather ... like a nice leather wallet smell. As it progresses, you get woody notes with one of my favorite spices ... CINNAMON! The drydown is exquisite, masculine and sexy. If you like CK Shock ... then this is the refined, well crafted version of that scent profile. Even though many say this is more of a Fall/Winter scent ... I also like it in Spring. If you have extremely hot summers where you live then it probably should not be used at that time. WONDERFUL, MASCULINE SCENT for any age group.

I like this fragrance a great deal. True to it's name, Vintage definitely has a retro 1990's vibe. IMO it leans towards the classic barber shop / shaving cream aroma category. JV Vintage reminds me a bit of RL Safari, but is by no means a clone. I haven't worn it enough to comment on the longevity or sillage, but from reading the previous reviews its seems to be about what you'd expect from a JV fragrance. That being said, this fragrance smells clean, well put together and is reletively inexpensive so feel free to overspray. Cheers!

Idk for me I tried this and some others and for the most part this is the one i found interesting in the jv line i was able to access (others I tried are: Jv (original), artisan (ew), blue, pure). Herbal (almost tea herbal than just any basic botanic scent), suede or leathery to some extent, slightly sweet, definitely weak projection but scent profile is 8/10. Intresting.

A vague review but honestly this is an evergreen all-time scent for me, especially on weekends. It has a grassy undertone that works great in warmer months, but the overall classic Chypre scent just totally works all year round. Wife loves it.

A luxurious niche scent with below average performance. If this liquid was put in a niche fragrance bottle and its performance increased, the fragrance would sell for ten times its price. A fragrance unlike any other: smoky, spicy and leathery a light scent on the nose that gives you a complete olfactory experience of pleasure. The most distinctive notes are Rhubarb, Tobacco and Suede with a hint of Cinnamon in a very light and pleasant way. The fragrance is masculine and suitable for cold weather. The performance is very weak, which is a drawback of this fragrance. The price is reasonable and not exaggerated. The fragrance bottle is very distinctive and luxurious and is worth more than its price, as usual with John Varvatos fragrance bottles.
