Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male

As a woman, I was given a sample of this fragrance. When I first tested it on paper, I thought it was awful and assumed it was just a dated, old-school scent. However, after reading the reviews here, I decided to give it another chance on my skin. It completely changes on the skin, becoming much better and sweeter. On paper, it smelled very masculine, carrying that bitterness I usually dislike in men's fragrances. (Honestly, men shouldn’t be afraid to wear unisex perfumes; they actually smell much better!) On my skin, it shifts into something more feminine and sweet, though i still don't like it.bleh Curious about its massive success, I did some research. It turns out my instincts were right about why I dislike traditional, bitter colognes. This fragrance was a game-changer because it broke stereotypes. It introduced vanilla and powder to a market previously dominated by bitter, woody scents, paving the way for the unisex trend by masterfully blending barbershop freshness with an intense, provocative sweetness. Today it feels basic because it was copied everywhere for 30 years and can turn flat or synthetic on the skin

I have either owned or tried all the flankers but it occured to me on a flight home I'd never actually tried or owned the OG probably through snobbery if I'm honest. Anyway 75ml for £40 seemed to good to refuse. What can I say I love it, so soft and powdery not overpowering if you spray correctly and just a generally lovely scent. Easy buy

Le Male is one of those fragrances that seems almost untouchable in the fragrance community. It's won awards, inspired countless flankers and imitators, and has been a bestseller for decades. Every few years I revisit it; whether it's a spray of a friend's bottle, or a tester in a department store. And I find myself wondering, "will this will be the moment it finally gets me on the hook?"... ...it never does. I've tried to like Le Male more than once over the years because, on paper, it sounds like something I should appreciate. It's undeniably well made, instantly recognisable, and has become one of the defining masculine fragrances of the modern era. Clearly millions of people see something in it that keeps them coming back. There's quite a number of popular fragrances I like. I refuse to dislike a scent because many others like it. It's not "cool" to go against the grain if deep down you're in denial, but you wanna just be different. That's for 12 year-olds. But this one? Nah. Nope. Not. A. Frickin'. Chance. The overriding impression I get every time I smell it is...Play-Doh. And it's not for the first few seconds. It's not buried somewhere in the dry-down. It's there...all the time. Play-Doh. Once my brain has made that association, there's no going back. It's sweet. It's almost...'chewy'. While others describe barbershop elegance, comforting lavender, and irresistible sensuality, my brain insists on taking me straight to a primary school art classroom. Sometimes a fragrance simply isn't meant for you, regardless of how iconic it becomes. Le Male is one of the most celebrated men's fragrances ever made. It also happens to be one of the easiest "no thank you, please go away now" decisions my nose has ever made.

Pretty good. I like to wear it at night. Usually my skin brings out the less sweet notes but this cologne always smells sweet on me the whole time.

This is a true CLASSIC, and for me, it’s the fragrance that really put LAVENDER on the map. The mix of lavender and mint is fresh, aromatic and instantly recognizable. I own a bottle from 2003 that I treasure deeply, and I still smell it and wear it from time to time, especially on a bad day when I just want something olfactively beautiful. Younger people today would probably choose one of the much sweeter JPG releases instead, but Le Male is different. It has its own identity, its own place in perfume history, and no matter how many new versions appear, this one is and will always remain a CLASSIC.

This is fucking great although itd a bit sweet for me the drydown is great

Its a good scent but Eros has a similar scent profile with better longevity and smells better imo, gets more compliments, and there is better Jpg’s. It is very good for casual use though (except for hot days).

JPG Le Male. This is my 2nd JPG Fragrance. I was skeptical about getting into JPG because a lot of people recommended me Le Male Elixir, because I like darker scents. I'm not a crazy fan of Le Male Elixir. I feel like it is overrated. I'm trying to get into having seasonal/ocassion fragrances. I got.into this because of it's clean, almost barber like scent. I've gotten compliments from this. During the first 2-4 hours it projects really well, about 3-6 feet. After about 5 hours it get a bit intimate. Nonetheless it is an amazing scent. I believe its a good all round fragrance.

Performance is the main issue, scent is fine and appealing clean fresh vanilla. Performance would be the main reason I couldn’t buy it. 3 sprays in the same spot and still can’t smell it strongly

Smells old. Not in a derogatory but in a classic way. I kinda agree with the "grandpa" and "barbershop" comments but it does not make me dislike it. Definitely not a young person scent. Nice blend of lavender, mint and cinnamon. All these notes together remind me of jasmine somehow. There is sweetness in this scent but I don't get a lot of vanilla, it's more of a cinnamon/spicy type of sweetness to me. Longevity is quite good for an EDT. I don't hate it but it's not a perfume I would buy for myself. 5/10.

Utilizo o Le Male há mais de 15 anos e ele carrega para mim um forte valor nostálgico. Fragrância marcante, que combina um tom fresco e limpo a um fundo quente e adocicado de maneira bastante harmoniosa, sendo ideal para a noite e para climas mais amenos. Sua performance é excelente, apresentando ótima fixação e projeção tanto na pele quanto nas roupas, fazendo-se notar sem a necessidade de exageros nas borrifadas. Ainda que a linha conte com flankers mais recentes e muito bem avaliados, considero a versão tradicional a mais equilibrada para o meu gosto. Um verdadeiro clássico. Recomendo! Nota: 4,5/5

i have a 2025 batch and the performance is not as bad as people claim it to be. you may call it weak due to its mild scent profile but it has an average designer performance. anyways, big fan of the smell!

As mentioned below, the current iterations are a far cry from what this fragramce was originally. Easy +12 hours and the projection was simply ridiculous. So much so that I had to be careful and leave it at two sprays to keep it tasteful. Anything more than that was just asking for trouble. Beautiful profile which really changed how mens fragrances were looked at. I wish I could get my hands on the original.

My absolute all time favorite cologne…a shame what the reformulations have done to it over the years but I still have and am cherishing a couple of bottles from the late 1990’s batches where this was just a gorgeous, beautiful, monsterously projecting piece of confidence inducing perfumery. Minty vanillic lavender with just the right amount of powderiness…calm cool and collected…just makes me feel like the best version of myself that I can be whenever I wear it. I still enjoy the current formulation of it but it is much more subdued and tamer in its performance and punchiness when compared to the older version(s). Will always have a bottle regardless of formulation variations as long as it is available and not discontinued. An absolute classic and legend that changed men’s fragrances during its introduction and one of those that deserves to be in the fragrance hall of fame.

Absolutely love the smell of this fragrance, however I discovered I am allergic to it and broke out in a rash. Doesn't matter where I spray it always ends up causing a rash, Googling this has revealed the reformulations are the cause. Make sure you try Le Male in person FIRST before purchasing to make sure you don't end up doing what I did and buying it purely on smell from a test strip. Ended up giving my bottle to a family member who enjoys it.

One of the first 2 fragrances I bought was a clone of JPG Le Male; it was called "G for Men". Now having smelled the original, I can say they smell nothing alike, haha. This *actually* is a barbershop scent. Most of the time when people describe a fragrance as such, it couldn't be further from that label. Whereas Le Male smells exactly like the Equate Sensitive Foam that I use to shave, and I love it. Though that being said, *the* JPG Le Male just smelling like shaving foam is kinda... disappointing. I had expected it to be a deeper or more complex scent. Perhaps shaving foam smells like Le Male, and not the other way around. But I wasn't even born when this came out, so I will never know. As it stands, it's a simple and commonplace scent. I don't think it's worth buying a full bottle. I will likely buy a clone or get a 10mL decant, and call it a day. I don't see how this was a pioneer, either. In the sense that, Le Male is (allegedly) the reason why modern men's fragrances are so sweet. And that doesn't make sense to me because I wouldn't call it "sweet"; it's clean and musky.

I remember when this came out. I was on a plane coming back from France, and the handsome man next to me was wearing it. I had never smelt anything like it. I found it intoxicating. To hear people say it’s dated and nothing special makes me laugh. It was created in 1995, so yeah, it’s dated. And it’s been around for 30 years, so yeah, it’s been replicated a lot. But it is special, because it was a first in its genre. And the old uncles wearing it, well, they’re just wearing their fave perfume from when they were 25. You don’t stop wearing a perfume because of your age. To you, that perfume feels like you, because no one old feels their age. I’m 55, but I still feel exactly the way I did at 25. Most of us do. Wear what you feel like and just stop being so judgmental. And I agree with the person below, smells pretty much the way it always has.

Legendary lavender. And what really makes it special is the longevity and thickness of the fragrance. This one hasn’t been killed by reformulation.

Im 14 and been wearing this to school and its so goood. It projects well it smells nice and no it doesnt smell like a grandpa trying to be sexy 😭 I keep it in my daily rotation with my hawas and aqua de gio profumo. Its my fav jpg

I'd imagine this is what gambit from the xmen would use a nice mint lavender opening that dries down to a vanilla tonka bean i couldn't test it on clothes but on skin it lasts 5 hours it's a good everyday fragrance with moderate performance i would rate it 8.3/10

Ok unpopular oppinion, it smell exactly like Enchanteur Charming but more mint. Popular pleasant fresh smell. Just have the vial pack and it already the iconic Enchanteur

I think the scent itself is pretty good at what it stands for. I'm not saying this would smell bad on any young person but mostly, i'd say this reminds me a sweet grandpa that gifts you chocolate whenever you visit him. It is calming. It smells clean, powdery and still lasts a long time (i'd say it is 6-7 hours, not so long lasting but i wouldn't say moderate aswell). However there is a lot of good alternatives that are way cheaper than this. And a note, even tho it won't bother anyone when you overspray it, I think it losts its' charm. A good 5 sprays will be awesome.

This still contains my favorite kind of lavender, the high quality green smooth clean kind. So calming and grounding. It's similar to the lavender in viking cologne. So masculine and refreshing. It's sweetened and warmed by vanilla and tonka which gives such a cozy long lasting dry down. Classic for a reason.

I like this scent, it's somewhat nostalgic. But for some reason, JPG fragrances smell like body odor in the beginning on my skin, but after 10-15 minutes, the smell finally goes away and gives way to this light powdery scent that is surprisingly good. I don't know what causes them to smell like body odor at the beginning, that's all I want to figure out.

I don't get the barbershop association the others keep referring to. To me the opening is not pleasant, however the drydown is incredibly good. Very addicting leathery vanilla. I basically use it for the drydown at this point- the unpleasant opening is worth to suffer through to get there.

Clean, beautiful, fresh, likable. Not dated, nothing that would wow me anymore.

Imagine walking into a nice smelling barber shop or dentist smells nice but then again it's a barber shop. Not to discredit this jpg it's a nice one in the line but so generic and outdated, I don't want to bash on it because it generally smells nice but not what I would want to smell like. 7.2/10

I am a little late to experience this scent. I just bought it recently for 45 USD, and honestly I was expecting more. I'm not big on lavender at all and it carries that smell along with mint. I personally love the dry down notes and that's why I bought it. I use it as a gym or cool weather scent. Longevity is ok, projection is ok. 7/10 fragrance

It smells exactly like a barbershop, and that’s the best way I can describe it. I’ve always loved the scent when walking into my barbershop, which is why I like this one so much.
