The Dreamer

Weak and light, so boring and waste of your money.

One of the most fun fragrances I own. When I smell this, it reminds me of an ancient roman politician looking out of the window of his private bathhouse into a beautiful sunlit bay as the wooden ships slowly creep their way to port. It might be the bottle design that invokes this image in my head.

Got this in October, I think maceration on this fragrance has a positive effect in the base notes and performance, because it surprisingly lasts long despite its scent profile. No I am not a big fan of the opening, It's still harsh even after maceration. Once it settles after 10-ish minutes, when the powdery floral nuances start, that's about where I start really enjoying this. The main thing you're going to get here is the white floral. It's not quite the same as the one in YSL Myslf or Nikos Sculpture edt, since that is orange blossom and this is tobacco blossom, don't get them mixed up. Definitely sample first, and this is something you either start liking through time or never really connect with it. It's a love for me though.

There is nothing I have tried that is like Dreamer. It has a unique tobacco like waft coming away from it. I think it's the tarragon blended in there. A men's classic and a love from me.

It's just too powdery for me. I've not been able to wear this without feeling... like a kid It's not for me. The notes are very creamy and powdery, it might be a good first scent to get someone invested in the fragrance world. But if you've got three or four other options, then I'd personally look elsewhere.

Have been wearing this for about 15 years. Clubbing or going to a bar with friends The dreamer never lets me down. I get asked every time what I’m wearing. The base note is definitely black pepper with a hint of leather. It’s very underrated. Love it.

I remember the time when i was still in the beginnings of this hobby, i went into a fashion store that had two shelves with fragrances. The selection was little, but so was my experience with perfumes. At that time i could have counted the number of fragrances i’ve smelt on my two hands but i could recognise many of the bottles thanks to binge-watching youtube fragrance content all day. Jeremy Fragrance was in his prime, looking sharper and more charismatic then ever. In one of his videos he called Versace The Dreamer the fragrance with the best name ever, and he was right. The Dreamer made me appreciate a perfume with a good name. Its funny, i remember seeing The Dreamer on the shelf and trying to take the cap off to test it on my skin, not knowing that there is such a thing as incorporated atomisers. Given how inexperienced i was, i could only describe it in the following way: it smelt green and it smelt mature. Now, years later, im getting reacquainted with The Dreamer and the impression i had back then still mostly holds true today. Indeed, The Dreamer is a product of its time and i say that positively. No amberwoods in sight, no artificial sweetness, no signs of a perfume that shoulder bumps into you to get your attention. In one of my reviews i mentioned that to me it feels as if at some point in recent times, a line was drawn that separates older perfumes from newer ones. Its not just different times and trends but different on a molecular level. As if there was a complete refresh on the ingredients used now compared to those used back then. I cannot exactly describe how but modern aromachemicals just smell, feel, behave differently then older ones hence why perfumes that came out in more recent times simply differ from what was before. Versace The Dreamer is a great example in this regard, one typical of 90’s and 2000’s perfumery. To my nose, its an avalanche of non sweet, blossomy white florals and barbershop elements. The way i perceive the scent, these two nouances dominate the scent completely, to a degree at which i’d even call the fragrance simple or layer-less but still beautiful nevertheless. Luck has it that i love these two accords so its a positive occurance for me. The scent reminds me of Chanel’s Boy, a 2016 release that was done in a retro...no!...a nostalgic fashion on purpose. Boy had a pinch of lavander but overall it was a soft aromatic, even lighter and more ethereal then The Dreamer. Even more so, it reminds me of the classic Le Male and on quick glance i would have trouble distinguishing the two. The Dreamer features a tobacco-y texture where Le Male has the vanilla that rounds off the edges but the blossomy white floral and soapy structure dominate both fragrances. Come to think of it, i felt a strange familiarity when i smelt Le Male for the first time and i attributed that to the possibility that somewhere, sometime i’ve smelt it on someone when i was a child. Now that i got to smell The Dreamer, its entirely possible that the familiarity came from that one time when i smelt The Dreamer in that store. The Dreamer is a cheapie but it doesn’t feel so. To me it feels less like a fragrance and more like a vibe and the zeitgeist of the 90’s. Its a great masculine-floral perfume ment for those mature enough to know how nostalgia and complex emotions feel like. Smelling and thinking about it, i can see the Versace mansion in Miami but not during the night, as a scene for parties. I see Gianni Versace waking up on a quiet Sunday noon, wearing one of his iconic gowns and flip-flops and picking up the newspaper from his doorstep. Its a good day.

This fragrance was interesting for me. When I first smelled it, I was not a fan. It reminded me of old spice original deodorant. It almost gave me a bug spray vibe. It’s sharp, clean, and has a chemical sort of smell to it. It really reminds me of my local dentist office. When walking through their front door it smells very similar, whatever air freshener or cleaner they use is close to this. After going back to this fragrance a couple months later, I really liked it for some reason. That dentist office, clean, sterile vibe really caught my nose. This is a very versatile scent and can be used for many different occasions and times of year. I personally used this for casual settings such as running errands, going to work, and hanging around the house. The dreamer has pretty decent longevity, it lasts around 4-6 hours on me until turning into a skin scent. Although it is marketed towards men, I found it pretty unisex. My wife wore it about as much as I did and she pulled it off well. After wearing an entire 100ml bottle of this, I can say that it is great for the price. I’m sure that it’s divisive and can be off putting for some or smell dated but I personally grew to enjoy it! Smell 7/10 Longevity 5/10 Versatility 8/10 Bang for buck 10/10

My only blind buy that i actually used up the whole bottle and went out got the largest size it comes in. This is the only one fragrance out of many many i owned i did that.Nothing else needs to be said. It a dream can be yours (cost friendly), a beautiful dream(it smells like a dream). Unfortunately I cant find the original version now I am using the new version. Still its my sweet dream to me.

I like the minty liquorice opening but it fades quickly. Theres a white floral auqatic amber dry down. The flax and tobacco leaves this smell that reminds me of the part of patchouli I don't like but is a very weak skin scent. Opening is too brash and dry down is too thin. It could have been good but it is also 40$ so...

The Dreamer, the name that speaks itself I enjoy this fragrance so much that reminds me of myself when I was a teenager at night home, the nostalgic feeling really hits! Personally, I use The Dreamer at home most of the time, yes almost every night before sleeping.

I am only wearing this indoors because it has sentimental value to me - Got it as a gift and wore it as my signature scent during the happiest period of my life lmao. It wasn't an instant love, at first I associated it with a 'grandma' sort of vibe but I grew to enjoy it. I barely leave the house while wearing this because the performance kind of sucks, I'd rather spray something else.

Versace The Dreamer: It Doesn’t Demand Attention. It Earns It. Dreams come in endless variations, but it’s the dreamer who gives them meaning. Some dreams fade the moment you wake. Others linger, leaving behind emotions you can’t quite explain. That’s what Versace The Dreamer reminds me of. I’ll admit it. The first time I smelled it, I didn’t get it.The opening is herbal, green, and a little unusual. I almost put it back on the shelf, and I understand why some people do. But this isn’t a fragrance that reveals itself in the first thirty seconds. It rewards patience. Give it a few minutes and everything begins to connect. The iris, lily, and flax soften the composition into something comforting and elegant. Then the tobacco blossom quietly steps in. Not smoky. Not loud. Just effortlessly confident. It’s the note that made everything finally make sense to me. The dry down is clean, slightly soapy, and smooth. It feels less like wearing a fragrance and more like carrying a quiet memory. Don’t expect beast mode projection with only just a few sprays; however, it projects for me because when I apply it, I apply with pressure. Then hours later I may apply more pressure. The Dreamer stays close enough to invite people in rather than announce itself across the room. The longevity, though, surprised me. I caught soft traces on my skin for hours and on my clothes well into the next day. It doesn’t demand attention. It earns it. Nearly three decades after its 1996 release, The Dreamer still doesn’t smell like it’s chasing trends. It smells like it’s comfortable being itself. I’m glad I didn’t judge it by the opening. To start off, I disagree with most of the other reviews on here. Versace The Dreamer is possibly the most floral, and yet also one of the most masculine fragrances I have ever smelled. I understand that a lot of people may be put off with it's strong, almost harsh, opening of the Juniper and Artemesia notes, because, yes, it is quite a shock, literally every time it is sprayed; every single spray of this is extremely sweet but as soon as it settles into the skin, it turns into this lovely floral façade. Admittedly, I also sense a lot of these flowers in the opening, which I haven't seen all too many other people also saying. In my opinion, just because it is similar to a lot of feminine fragrances that are around, it is just.. different in it's own way. The essence of it's differences actually make it insanely masculine in my eyes because it is so out there and beyond what a lot of people would even consider. I could almost call it niche, not in the sense that fragrances are usually called niche, but in the sense that it's one of these things that's so uncommon to hear about and people might consider it unique. Versace really went out there with this one, specifically the new version of The Dreamer. It's quite different from the 1996 edition, and quite frankly I prefer that one, despite unfortunately not owning a bottle. This one is more fruity, has softer tobacco notes, and lacks the complexity of the sensation one may experience when walking through a pine forest on a spring afternoon. Moving onto the actual "specifications", I think it performs very well, especially for the retail price. It has very very good longevity, lasting at least 8 hours on my skin, even in Winter where I find fragrances fade more quickly. Overall, 7.5/10

Why only women report on loving to wear it and all men say it s***s a**s? Anyways, I like it although I can't say it's a good perfume.

The Dreamer is historically and culturally important because it's the last fragrance Gianni Versace worked on before his assassination in 1997. As a fragrance it's challenging. It was challenging in 1996 when I was 15, it's still challenging 30 years later now I'm in my forties. The difference is I can appreciate that challenge. When it was created it stood in defiance to the soft airy "don't notice me" fragrances that came on the back of the AIDS Epidemic and it now stands in defiance to the saccharin sweet gourmands that are currently in fashion. Where it has power in both periods is how it works WITH fragrances of those times. Wear it layered with something like CK One and the iris and tobacco flower enhance the green notes. Layered with something sweet and more modern like PDM Oajan and it tones down the aggressive sweetness making it smell something akin to a spa day. That said, it's good on its own! It's just not for teenagers or gym bros.

This smells like a 90 year old man as a 14 year old this isn’t good

bought this out of pure curiosity and it kinda reminds me of Irish spring soap in a way im not sure i really like but it's not bad and i think some people would like edit: this stuff is really bad on my nose, it was fairly cheap but i regret buying it. first frag that makes me literally nauseous.

Sadly I got this "version"...the reformulated bottle & it is NOT good! WHY Versace? You ruined an unbelievable fragrance! BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL! :( I love the "original" The Dreamer is listed here on Fragrantica also. IT is FANTASTIC!!!

This couldn’t have been a worse blind buy. It smells like bath salts or like a really cheap home decor shop. Immediately hated it, but somehow my girlfriend really likes it so she wears it now. Dream higher than this.

I bought this perfume a couple years ago, as one of the first designer purchases I allowed myself in adulthood. I’ve since realized that my first impression of this fragrance was greatly distorted by an amalgamation of the cologne I already worse that day, my musk and a try-tester frenzy at the store. It seemed less feminine or powdery, and more like a great soapy herbal scent. I read «tobacco» without the blossom part, and wrongly attributed a level of masculinity that this perfume clearly lacks. It’s not entirely feminine, but it feels incomplete without a more virile masculine note to spice it just right. It opens very strongly with “grandma” but does settle more soap-like once the top notes neutralize. As an artist I’m also visually oriented and thus often disappointed by lazily designed perfume bottles. The classic vibe, the beautiful sculpted glass and the functionality of the intact cap that makes it impossible to get lost really sold me. I really wish to test the notoriously praised and longed after, allegedly diluted, signature tobacco note. Some claim it had less of a granny streak and that’s truly my only issue. There’s something very pleasant about this perfume despite its unfortunate powderiness. I’ve used it for layering with cheap colognes to augment their freshness and «darker» scents that needed a soapy-ish, floral pickup to balance it out. In the end I’m quite thankful for it as it helped me understand my preferences. I didn’t finish it and still use the bottle as decoration. Thank you, The Dreamer x

this is my favorite masculine fragrance. so much so that I'd spray it on myself as a woman whenever I visited my friend who owned this. the juniper and iris create a comforting, earthy, and non-traditional scent that I adore. it's aromatic but not overly sharp or soapy to me. I envision a spa bath in a warm forest of conifer trees.

The current version is NOT the same as the vintage one. Today’s The Dreamer is much smoother. That signature tobacco note from the old version, loved by many, has been diluted in the reformulation. It remains elegant, but it is lighter, less full-bodied, and less 'intense' than the original. The good news? You can be more generous with the sprays without worrying about it becoming cloying or heavy. The bad news? That striking scent of the original is a thing of the past. For me, The Dreamer is clearly an autumn and winter fragrance. You might get away with wearing it in the spring or on cool summer nights, but it truly shines when it's chilly outside. On my skin, the longevity and projection fall between moderate and intimate. It’s not the kind of scent that announces your arrival from across the room, but it creates a pleasant aura around you. Those who get close will notice it, and that has its own charm. It’s discreet. This is not a safe blind buy. The Dreamer has a strong personality and might not please everyone right away. My recommendation is: try it before you buy. Get a decant, spray it on, and let it develop on your skin. It deserves that chance, but it needs to click with you. And a cool bit of trivia: the lead singer of Bon Jovi said in an interview that he used to wear The Dreamer, though he was referring to the vintage version, the more full-bodied one.

THIS IS CLASS. VERSACE THE DREAMER. This fragrance is so gooood Easily for all Seasons. That Iris in this perfume bro...

The fragrance opens beautifully with a refined floral accord, where peony and white lily create a fresh, elegant introduction. As it develops, the iris in the heart adds a soft powdery sophistication that feels smooth and well-balanced. Unfortunately, the dry down is where the composition loses its appeal. The combination of tobacco leaf and amber creates an aroma reminiscent of corrugated cardboard or shipping boxes, which feels surprisingly harsh and out of place after such a promising opening. A smoother sandalwood-and-amber base would likely have delivered a far more polished and masculine finish. While the opening and mid notes show genuine potential, the dry down ultimately overshadows the experience and makes the fragrance difficult to recommend. Big Pass!

Smells like straight up dust. Or perhaps a freshly opened plastic and cardboard package. If you can get past the strong dust/plastic smell, you can get a bit of the coolness of the iris and herbal/bitter tarragon and wormwood, and maybe a hint of spicy juniper. Absolutely no sign of the base notes even on dry down. Faintly floral, faintly herbal dust the entire time. Not a typical masculine cologne. It's not that it smells too feminine, but rather that I have no idea why anyone, man or woman, would want to smell like this. And yet I do occasionally spray it on myself, just to be reminded how weird it is. Reminds me of the inside of a high school supply closet. Good news/bad news: it lasts all day.

I've had The Dreamer for about 5 or 6 years and always wore it as a night time, before bed scent. I only wore it out to work a handful of times because it doesn't last very long ( 2-3 hours ). Very light, yet comforting scent profile. Fast forward to about a year ago when I got married, and found out my wife HATES to smell it. She says it's too sour smelling and doesn't smell like something a man would wear. I guess something doesn't jive with it to her. She generally enjoys all of my fragrance collection minus a few that even I don't really like.

I liked this one overall; the price, the scent, and the general vibe. Unfortunately, the performance isn’t very good. It fades away after around 5 hours, and after about 1.5 hours it barely projects anymore. I did enjoy the use of violet (iris) here though. It’s basically a clean iris fragrance.
