it smells just like LEMON JUICE and pepper on me, yay no pencil shavings, although i did get a huge burst of woody smoke in the intial spray
I basically cannot smell this at all. But detected a touch of something that smelled like saliva. The "freshly licked envelope" line below is really accurate for me. I really wanted to like this one, as the concept is super cool to me. But it's even fainter than Not a Perfume. Maybe it will come alive layering.
I got a sample of this and absolutely loved it. It's a light synthetic woody scent with other trace molecules and apparently smells a little differently on each person's skin. Some people describe it as pencil shavings. It is a "barely there" skin scent, and you catch whiffs of it now and again through the day. It is stealth; it does not announce itself. Totally office safe. Most people can smell it but can't tell who's wearing it or what it is; it is a little mysterious, except to people who have encountered it before. It's supposed to help other frags last longer or increase their projection, but it's best used alone, IMO, as a scent for "no-perfume" days: it is very satisfying. I have been looking for a cheaper pure iso-E-super for a while now. Molecule 01 is way too $rich for its minimalist profile.
Pencil shavings
Very special perfume
It smells like freshly copied paper…very specifically, it reminds me of a brand new Japanese textbook that doesn’t have any of the cardboard mustiness of heavy American textbooks. It’s very interesting and makes me feel a bit melancholic.
This fragrance is my first Niche one, actually, and honestly, I have to say the way it works on my skin is very interesting indeed. What I smell is that alcohol hand sanitizer smell that burns your nose at first; then, after spraying it 5 times two on my neck, one on each wrist, and one on my shirt I can only smell it on one wrist, and I can't smell it anywhere else on me. But besides that, though, it's actually really good for layering other fragrances; it'll help make a quiet one stick out louder in the crowd, but you could also have it as they call it a dumb reach one because it doesn't smell strong at all and it's just really good i recommend this one for sure
The name on the bottle promises less than almost any other in perfumery. It borrows no halo from a place, no memory of a flower; it simply points to a substance. In Kripke's terms the name behaves as a rigid designator—as though it reached its object directly. But that gesture of candour is exactly the blade that can be turned on the work: what a substance is, chemistry decides after the fact. Poetic names answer for necessity, not for truth: no one can accuse a perfume of not being Haiti. Only a name written in the grammar of fact earns the right to lie. Molecule 01 is among the most flagrant invitations to verification in the history of the art. So let us verify. Neither step in the industrial synthesis of Iso E Super is selective, and the acid-mediated cyclisation drags isomerisation along with it. What emerges is a mixture of isomeric ketones. Erman and colleagues at Millennium Specialty Chemicals analysed the mixture in 2001: 8 major peaks, A through H, each above 1%, whose principal constituents they isolated and identified. B dominates at 40–60%; G, the one that matters, comes to 2–4%. But B has an odour threshold of roughly 500 ng/L and G of roughly 5 pg/L. That gap of 5 orders of magnitude carries the mixture's olfactory centre of gravity far from its centre of mass. Yet to say that only G smells would be a second lie. Each isolated constituent has an odour of its own: D woody, incense-like, leathery, faintly animalic, trailing burnt sugar; H sweet resin and smoke; C a woodiness close to cedar ketone. Erman's group then rebuilt the eight at commercial proportions and set the result beside the standard product. Close—but not the same. The reconstitution lost amber and gained wood; the standard was smoother, rounder. The difference, the authors inferred, comes from more than 12 trace peaks they had not identified. Here two grammars have to be separated. On the perfumer's shelf, Iso E Super is one material. It takes a single line on a purchase order, answers to a single name, occupies a single position on the palette. In analytical chemistry it is many: 8 major peaks above 1%, the structurally determined constituents inside them, and more than 12 unidentified traces. Both grammars are correct where they stand. The fiction of Molecule 01 lies in speaking of one material as though it were one molecule. What the name switched was not the substance. It was the grammar. From that switch a strange consequence follows. A perfume that came into being by refusing composition had already been composed—not by a person but by a reaction vessel, its proportions set not by aesthetic judgement but by the strength of the acid, the temperature, the reaction time. Duchamp chose a urinal and presented the choice as it stood. What Molecule 01 selected was a readymade too. But the frame marked one molecule failed to grasp what it was framing. It did not enclose a pure single substance; it enclosed the fiction of purity. That is what an unchosen readymade means—not that no choice was made, but that the frame missed its object. The gesture of subtraction is less of a rupture than it is taken to be. Perfumes giving more than half the compound to this material already existed, among them Escentric 01, the twin released alongside. Overdosing was established practice by 2006. Going from there to 100 is a continuous operation. What was discontinuous was less the zeroing of everything else than the decision to make that zero the subject of the work. Try the substitution. The gas-chromatographic comparison published in 2019 was unambiguous: the work, at €75–100 per 100 mL, and a commodity product at €20, smell alike, the difference confined to faint nuances arising from isomer ratios. At the macroscopic level, substitution succeeds. But a residue survives. An isomer ratio is a manufacturing fingerprint—a record of which vessel, what acid, how long. The substitute reproduces the outline and never becomes identical. That residue is unnecessary to the work's concept and necessary to its smell. The factory that made the urinal never touched the perceptual content of the work. Here the factory gets inside the smell—while still never reaching the concept. And still it belongs to the history of the art. It is among the earliest commercial successes to take on, as a central property of the product, the possibility that the wearer cannot perceive what they are wearing. In 2017, in an experiment presenting 32 odorants continuously for 120 seconds, Iso E Super was classed among the 4 strongest habituators. Little detectable trigeminal stimulation, high molecular weight, low volatility—several of the principal conditions associated with strong habituation. Yet in another experiment—10 one-second pulses at 5 times the concentration—this was the one substance whose rated intensity did not fall significantly. Continuous or intermittent, strong or faint: the result inverts. Wearing is neither. There is breathing, there is movement, there are air currents, there is clothing. Still, with a persistent source fixed to the body, there is considerable room for continuous-type habituation to operate—and that is a hypothesis. And what separates the wearer from those nearby is not the substance but exposure history. The wearer is exposed continuously; those nearby meet it intermittently. The same substance, the same physics, different histories of exposure—and that produces a blank on one side and detection on the other. The asymmetry itself is present in every perfume. What is singular here is that the conditions pressing the wearer's side down—the habituation just described, and the range of individual sensitivity—coincide with the condition lifting the other side: the way this material carries, reaching far despite its slow volatility. The properties of the material are not the cause of the asymmetry. They are its amplifier. Some wearers therefore pass an entire day without smelling their own perfume. It is others who confirm it. The question—what are you wearing?—arrives as proof that the performance took place. The wearer is not even the first recipient here, but is demoted to a medium. The work is staged not on the skin but in the air around the wearer, on other people's noses. The condition Cavell recorded for modernism—that the audience can no longer tell the genuine from the fraudulent by its own lights, and can relate to the work only through trust—occurs here not as a metaphor but as a perceptual fact. What appears the instant it meets skin cannot be called a scent. A faint static charge, or the warmth of a clean body: an intimation, and nothing more nameable than that. It appears, disappears, and rises again once you have stopped waiting for it. The image forms only after the flicker. In most perfumes the image arrives first and thins away; here the flicker comes first and the image precipitates out of it, late. What precipitates is a hardness like the dry white wood of cedar, fused seamlessly with a velvet warmth like ambergris. The fusion itself is superb. But something that ought to be there is missing. There is no smell of earth. No stickiness of sap. None of the organic complexity of cells decaying. The image of wood arrives; wood as an object never quite does. Analytically, the liquid is a mixture of 8 major peaks and more than 12 unidentified traces. Perceptually there is only an armature. The complexity is real, and it does not accumulate into organic depth. This reaction vessel composes thickness of smell, but not the time in which things rot. That is why the representation never completes. A perfume that turned a means into an end came 8 years earlier. Comme des Garçons, Odeur 53 (1998). The house spoke of 53 inorganic ideas; what works in the foreground is a single operation—transparency stripped from the flower, carried by hedione, reported at 65% of the compound. Hedione began at 2.5%, rose through 12.6, 26 and 40, and reached 65% here. Iso E Super likewise climbed 25, 43
Molecule 01 (Iso E Super): A projection booster that creates an airy, hovering cloud of subtle cedarwood around you, making your perfume radiate further. Molecule 02 (Ambroxan): A longevity anchor that smells like warm, salty skin and acts like glue, making your perfume last hours longer.
It's a frustrating paradox: - there will be compliments from some people - there will be those who smell nothing, including me this makes it hard to review and assess it's value
I can smell it. (And I cannot smell all of them, but sadly in the perfume world, there are some chemicals that smell noxious to me…(Matiere Premiere I’m looking t you 😩). It’s by far, to my perception, the most enjoyable of the ‘ghost chemicals’. It makes the air somehow airier, more ‘natural’, like you’re in this endless perfect forest. I smelled it again as I walked into my cooling bedroom carrying all the memories of all my endless spraying, just now, from the warmth of the Canadian wood stove (❤️🔥) out in the main house. I’d never choose to ‘wear’ it. But it is so uplifting as an environment scent. I’m so torn, do I go back to my hippie essential oils, do I continue my struggle into the art of the sublime? I fear I’m going to give up on the modern chemicals.
For those of you who are anosmic to iso E super, like I was for years and years, it ISO possible! I recommend spending time with the molecule 01+ range, if only to be afforded the contrast of one note you can easily identify, supported by iso E. I have been wearing Molecule 01 for nearly 10 years now, and only since I purchased some of its flankers in the last couple of years have I been able to confidently say I KNOW what the molecule smells like. It’s honestly always been a question without intense heat and sweat, and in those instances, I wondered how much of what I was smelling had to do with my skin care routine. (Also, the “freshly licked envelope” description is exactly what I’d smelled! I thought that bitter-sweet nearly nothingness was “it”!)
i should not have blind bought this. i am unfortunately one of the many people who cannot smell this at all. what a waste
the opening smells like the adhesive of a freshly licked envelope I'm waiting for it to wow me... *looks at clock* ...waiting to understand it.... can't get the bottle of Elmer's Glue out of my head. *shrug* EDIT: I understand it now. Wearing it today and while the opening still smells like adhesive, it becomes more like magazine pages fresh off the press. It is very comforting, nostalgic and reminds me of autumn. The introverted cousin to Another 13.
I really like the fragrance itself. It's fresh, cool, woody, a little powdery, gentle. That being said, Molecule 01 is just so so elusive it's infuriating. I want to be able to smell my fragrance often. Not randomly every now and again.
For me, Molecule 01 is an eternal cloud of freshness, like the crisp air high up on a mountain peak. It is warm and comforting, yet carries that distinct, pristine scent of the very first snow. In astrology, this is the ultimate scent of Aquarius and Neptune—ethereal, uncatchable, and deeply personal. It doesn't shout; it merges with your own skin to create a magnetic, invisible aura. It is pure olfactory alchemy.
My only blind buy. It has become a room spray during house sale showings. It only smells green on me, in a fresh cut grass irritating kind of way
I REALLY wanted to hate this. It's so overpriced for what it is, it's basically a scam. Iso E Super is dirt cheap. I'm sadly not able to get ahold of it in my country, and I've been very curious to try out Iso E Super as a layering tool, so naturally, I had to suck it up and pay a ridiculous amount of money for this particular product. Because of science. But yeah. I really like it. Unfortunately. It smells like opening a brand new book. People say cardboard, but it's more like a fresh, crisp sheet of unbleached paper. Airy, but at the same time, earthy. It adds that airy, earthy dimension to everything else, and it truly goes well with anything. It adds airy diffusion to gourmands, and earthy structure to clean fragrances. It adds modernity and complexity to fragrances that are dated or linear. Yes, it is a light fragrance - but it does heavy lifting as a tool, that much is true. Knowing the value of the supplies that goes into making this pisses me off, though. It's literally just Iso E Super and perfumer's alcohol - in an ugly-ass bottle that doesn't even come with a cap?? Straight up scamming the consumers. No repurchase, obviously, but I'll enjoy it for as long as it'll last.
I first tried Molecule 01 last year, and it smelled so different to me then. It smelled like being in the forest, with a little bit of sharpness or zest, like freshly cut wood. Then, I got a celery note, which eventually faded (thank god) and left me with that very forest-y smell, and not much else. I described it as gorgeous, fun, cool, and different. Today, I tried it again. On first spray, it smells so strongly of alcohol, which takes a second to dissipate, which I didn't enjoy. I found it so refreshingly green that it's almost minty. Also, I could barely smell it, compared to how pungent I'd found it last year. I'm curious if I'm growing nose-blind to Iso E Super. It wasn't doing much on my skin, but today smelled almost slightly smoky in a way I didn't detect when I wore it last year. I was shocked by how barely-there it was. I am curious to try layering it with other stuff, as so many reviews suggest it acts really differently when paired with other scents.
The first time I tried it, I sprayed it without looking at the decant's name and thought, "Oh no, they forgot to put any fragrance in this." It smelled like low-quality alcohol. Then, how can I describe it, a sour, woody smell, peppery, maybe cardboard. The mistake is, I think this is more for the person you're going to smell it for than for yourself, like mandatory traffic insurance rather than comprehensive insurance. It's more for the other party. Spray it on someone you love without them noticing. Then it'll be beneficial.
Got a sample gifted with a purchase. I was so excited and sprayed it. And then - Nothing! Even water had some smell to it but this. Zero, nothing. So I asked chat gpt and turns out I’m one of the many people who can’t smell this and are blind to it. The irony is I own Zara synth aura which is full of iso e super and some molecular synthetic iris. And I can smell woodyness there. Today I decided I need to try it again and boom this very light, extremely faint smell. I think my brain is trying to recognize and associate it with something because at first it was this “alive wood” scent. Like the scent of the inside of a freshly cut young tree. The very pale inside of the tree. And I was like oh I like this a lot! Forward to 5 mins later I get this faint whiff of paper. Like new book, or a magazine. I like that. Then it’s like I’m in a shoe store where there are huge ammount of cardboard shoeboxes. (Basically my brain can’t seem to decide what this reminds me of). Interestingly I used to be the same with the famous baccarat rouge (not that they are the same) and I couldn’t smell that one too. Same as this one it smelled of nothing. Then with time I started getting whiffs. Same with ambroxan I couldn’t smell that now I’m extremely sensitive about it and can smell it the first thing when it’s in a fragrance. Always from a far. Same with akigala wood. I’d smell it on another person or when I’m moving and catch it and then lose it but never when I smell it up close. Now I need to try and train my nose (and brain) to recognize it. It’s nice but either it’s very very faint or I still haven’t learn to smell it. Now I want to try Georgi wood ahah.
I first smelled this on a very stylish woman who was kind enough to share the name of it after I profusely complimented her about it. I'd never smelled anything like it. I went the next day to the shop she mentioned and bought a bottle. It's now my daily driver and I get people following me in the grocery store like I followed the stylish woman that introduced it to me. Compliments all day long. This is a scent that isn't exactly a scent. It doesn't smell of flowers, fruit or food but of wind and rain and fresh chopped wood. It's clean and fresh, start to finish. It is in no way sweet but woody and muscular. I wear it daily and sometimes layer it with more complex, sweeter scents. I can sometimes smell it on my clothes and enjoy it all over again. It's a winner for me.
i spray it in the morning and still get baffling compliments at night for cuddles "how do you smell so good?" i was once asked what i was wearing at the nighttime board game hangout 17 hours later. when i responded in confusion and went "i didnt think i was wearing anything!" they went "bullshit i could smell it walking behind you!" which really impressed me. i have no idea what it smells like on my skin at that point but it seems to work out. it's unpretentious, modern, versatile, and much harder to get tired of. if i do feel like smelling some other way mid-day i can just spray something else on top, and it's character disappears. i use it to soften out harsher perfumes. the rest of my collection is weighed down by certain connotations "this smells expensive" "this smells playful" "this smells girly" this one just smells good
I was upset that this fragrance didn't work out for me. I am prone to migraines, especially with certain notes in perfume; and unfortunately, this fragrance also triggered it for me! It was such a shame bc it actually smelt great on me! It was giving parma violet sweets and clean musk when I wore it, like a clean, powdery musk smell. And actually, it lasted over 6 hours on my skin and settled nicely, it just became nauseating for me. But bare in mind, I am prone to migraines, if you are not, you will enjoy this!
The recent batches in the new bottle design are extremely weak. It's my 4th bottle but I won't be buying it again. Even people that gave me compliments constantly can't smell it anymore. It's very faint and it used to be nuclear.
A fascinating concept and undeniably unique, but ultimately not one for me. The woody Iso E Super base became too dominant as the fragrance developed, leaving me with a dry cedar-like scent that I didn’t particularly enjoy. I appreciate what it’s trying to do, but the dry down was the dealbreaker
had this one for a while now but i’m yet to write a review; If i had only one sentence to describe this, i’d say; it’s amber, done right. The wood and amber notes come and go for hours throughout the day, and whilst it can be slightly syrupy or resinous in high heat, it works great when layering or for use as a skin-plus kind of scent. Its the kind of scent that others will notice immediately, but you only pick up on here and there, its got great depth and performance, on its own, it smells like paper or pressed wood (mdf minus the adhesive smells, pencil shavings, etc) with a bit of amber and very muted florals, but when layered, it brings out vanilla and amber notes, and pairs well with sweet, stodgy fruity fragrances (ive been wearing it with Fugazzi’s Pomegranoudh and it’s irresistible) or with amber heavy scents to accentuate them better. Brilliant!
Iso E Super is not a note. It builds a canvas for the actual notes to paint that canvas. IES and hedione are both extremely common in modern perfumery, but you can’t really smell them in a formula. And you’re not supposed to. They boost performance, soften harsh notes, and add space between contrasting scents. So if you’re not using this for layering, you’ve wasted your money. That’s not to say that this fragrance is worth buying just to layer. First of all, if you really think that the perfumer of your fragrance didn’t add enough IES, you can just buy your own and save dozens of dollars. And if your fragrance needs to be layered with something else to smell good or perform well, then that fragrance has failed at being a complete creation on its own.
I like the idea of this fragrance. Unfortunately I and others were able to smell this on me and it smelled like straight sour pepper. This is so funny to me because it smells so good on my friend and usually my skin makes things very sweet but this thing… hahah.
Flipping through a crisp VOGUE, hot off the press.
