Loved Dune so I knew I had to pick up a bottle, even if they were only tangentially related. I've had it in my collection for a while, and I'm not sure what changed, but I'm liking it less as times goes by. Opening isn't great, perhaps the rose and cardamom don't mesh well to me, smells too "messy" if that makes sense. But, things start to change as the fragrance dries down; the rose and incense notes combine making a mature, thoughtful scent which would be perfect in colder weather. I'd categorize this scent not as a true unisex but as slightly feminine or slightly masculine, if that makes any sense.
Interestingly, I didn’t find Spice Must Flow to be as multi layered as the other two I’ve smelled from this brand. It starts off with a strong spiced note, like incense, and descends into a heavy perfumey rose smell. Followed by a base note that smells like a slightly jammy/fruity rubber or plastic doll head. Same family as Guerlain Shalimar and Zoologist Sacred Scarab. Shalimar is the mom, Sacred Scarab is the goth sister, and this is the sister with the boob job. But they're all peas in a very strong and aggressive pod. I was really excited to smell this bc I saw one review that said it smelled like Gucci Pour Homme, which I loved so much I bought it a million years ago. But it’s too floral heavy. Extremely high headache potential here. I sniffed it a bunch of times despite my headache fears. Then I reminded myself that fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will allow it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will have a pounding migraine to show for it all.
Had a sample set of 20 ELDO fragrances, and I really liked this one. Sometimes layered it with eau de protection, and also wore it by itself. Loved how spicy and juicy the rose seemed.
Leans a little more feminine to me. Smells identical to a nice rose incense you would burn in your house, very earthy crunchy vibe to it. Definitely made for colder days, it leans a very warm. Scent seems like it would be on someone who is more down to earth, hippie, or witchy. The rose might have the chance to smell a little "vintage" when first applied, but transforms into something more earthy and woodsy after a bit
Vintage bar soap again for me?
to keep it simple, to me it just smells like a piece of bubblegum. i don’t really get any spice weirdly. it just smells like a candy
I do not like gourmand fragrances, and to me, this is edging close to being one. That being said, I love this so much. Ordered a decant, then immediately ordered the full bottle. The spices, rose & incense are in perfect proportion. Something in it is really grounding everything; saffron is listed on the ELDO website and that might be it and also be the leather or cumin/sweat note people are detecting. I love rose scents and this one is so unusual and beautiful.
The definitive masculine rose—spiced, bold, and evocative. Spice Must Flow was already impressive on the first sniff—it perfectly captures a dry, spicy, "Dune-like" environment. On initial testing, the rose is prominent and beautifully wrapped in warm spices and incense. I initially thought that toning down the spices just a fraction might let the rose shine even more, but after a full wear test, I’ve realized that the balance is actually perfect exactly as it is. It’s an easy 10/10 for me, and absolutely full bottle-worthy. To put it into perspective, this is the definitive masculine rose. It takes the lush, rich DNA of a masterpiece like MFK Oud Satin Mood and completely strips away the cloying, syrupy sweetness, replacing it with a dry, warm foundation of cardamom and mystical incense. It is bold, deeply spiced, and incredibly evocative. If you want a statement piece for the cold weather that commands attention without relying on sugary sweetness, this is flawless. Note: I don't actually own this fragrance; I am writing this review based on my experience with the official Etat Libre d'Orange discovery set.
Try as she might to relax, to devote her evenings to small acts of self-care, a knot would tighten in her chest at the thought that tragedy might have struck. Spice Must Flow is probably the softest release from the État Libre d'Orange Extraordinaire collection, alongside its airy, cottony cousin, Soul of My Soul. I approached it with some hesitation. The name alone suggested a spice overload, the sort of thing liable to dominate an entire day. Thankfully, that fear proved unfounded. This is an exceptionally well-mannered poison. Its natural audience, I suspect, lies within the rarefied—and admittedly rather snobbish—circle of so-called nuclear fragrances, where thirty-year-old whisky is considered a perfectly respectable personal scent and agarwood is the main ingredient in everything they touch. Not because Spice Must Flow is especially forceful: its sillage is modest and it retires early. Rather, because it contains almost none of the reassuring signposts of modern perfumery. It smells like the boudoir of a French woman in 1944, waiting anxiously for news of her husband. The effect is achieved through a dusty yet delicate incense accord, a rose that recalls traditional rosewater far more than the polished synthetic roses of designer perfumery, and, surprisingly, only two spices: bitter cardamom and ginger. The latter adds a touch of freshness, but in 1944, far removed from our sterilised interiors, a few pieces of ginger left beneath a dressing-table mirror would hardly have made a room smell any more agreeable. Together, however, these elements create something unexpected: the ghost of a freshly opened Coca-Cola in its glass bottle, handed to the village women by passing American soldiers. And that is precisely why it works. Spice Must Flow feels authentic. It is humble, worn smooth by time, and entirely free of artifice. It occupies the opposite end of the spectrum from contemporary designer fragrances while remaining surprisingly approachable. True, it is far less provocative than the great oud monsters beloved by certain corners of the fragrance world. Yet it captures another age entirely—one that was not necessarily dirtier, merely less standardised, and unafraid of the frank, unmistakable character of things. For admirers of assertive vintage scents, Spice Must Flow may well be a point of reference: a fragrance in which they can recognise themselves without having to spend the day defending their favourite rum-oud-whisky-absinthe monstrosity against bewildered colleagues. In that sense, it's not only the spices that flow here—it is our commun good, air. One final detail: there is the faintest suggestion of perspiration running through the composition. Nothing unclean, nothing animalic enough to unsettle. Just a tiny skin-like nuance that reveals itself up close and, if anything, makes the fragrance feel more alive. Happy are the snobs who will reach for Spice Must Flow on a Monday morning, armoured against the horror of office life, where so very little feels genuine anymore.
very similar to experimentum crusis. spice cabinet with roses in it. it’s fun to smell but i don’t want it on my skin
Unfortunately, rose doesn't work for me
This one is ok. Definitely incense heavy on the open, overpowering the rose surprisingly. The cardamom and ginger don't really pop to me, and overall it doesn't feel that spicy. I guess you could say the ethereal essence of the smoky incense has a sort of thematic tie to the spice of the Dune universe? The rose reveals itself more as it drys down, and that element is quite nice. Projects quite strongly, but the overall longevity is on the shorter end. If you're an incense fan, this one might work for you.
Funny how both this and African Rose by Memo paris were launched in 2019, cause they smell nearly 100% identical. This is way weker tho. If you like this just go for African Rose.
i don't really pick up on the ginger. the incense is the main note to me and i like it more feminine than i was expecting enjoy but would not wear regularly 6.5/10
unfortunately smells like mustard
This is a romantic rendition of a sexy rose scent. It starts of with a rich warm spicy rose, that gets more muskier with facets of amber peeking through. It’s smoky, intoxicating and heady with great projection. On a man this would be obscenely good. IG/Tiktok: @wilddew_vibes
Smells like turkish delight with incense in the opening and dries down with spices. Very womanly is how I'd describe it, it's absolutely lovely
super spicy, heavy on cinnamon, heavy on ginger, cardamom, all mixed in with florals, mainly rose, but the rose stays pretty subtle overall, on the dry down it comes out a lot more, it's gourmand, it's sticky sweet. it's nice but at the end it's really not for me at all, I had to scrub it off. reminds me of those super strong perfumes my grandma would wear that would make my nose itch
I usually don't gravitate towards spicy and incense fragrances, but this was surprisingly better than I expected. Not amazing that it turned me over to like these types of fragrances, but it was softer and sweeter than other fragrances I've tried like this. You do get a lot of ginger from this, and it's a warm ginger. The sweetness is really coming from the florals. This fragrance doesn't last particularly long, but it certainly smells from a distance during that time. If you're looking for something spicy but don't want to wear something so obtrusive, this could be a good option Scent Description: Warm Ginger and Floral Sillage: Strong Longevity: Short-Medium / 4 hours give or take
I was disappointed that I couldn't smell any cinnamon in it. Come on, have you read Dune? Cinnamon should be the first note you add to a fragrance called Spice Must Flow! Overall not really spicy, more rosy + incense. Smells pretty good, just bad as a Dune tribute. The bottle looks great though, will probably still buy for the bottle and maybe layer with some warm and spicy fragrances.
So simple, yet so complex. Powdery and sticky all at once. Romantic, theatrical, sexy, feminine… yet if a man wore this I’d find it so captivating. Love.
Immediately after smelling this comes the full realization that this is basically an Arabian-style, rose-oud scent. One that is being marketed in a very cagily odd way. As with most oud fragrances, we are dealing with a synthetic constructed oud accord, ...and like most such accords, it can be sliced up differently into a variety of other equally subjective notes. Cardamom, ginger, and incense smoke are all listed, ...leather would be another likely call. But frankly, that ginger note is the most distinctive part of this fragrance; Presumably it is the titular spice that flows from necessity. I'm even willing to give it equal billing. ...Lets call this a ginger-rose-oud. About the name: "The spice must flow" is an important plot-delivering line from the half-forgotten, but still wonderfully strange, 1984 Dune film, directed by David Lynch; ...though the phrase isn't used in the original Frank Herbert novels. The expression later gained additional cultural capital as a vague meme of cryptic intention, as well as a repeated lyric in an underground techno track. ...and now it is also the name of ELDO's pungently acrid, ginger-rose-oud perfume.
There are 3 rose perfumes from this brand I've now tried. Of the 3, I thought this was going to be my favorite. Rose and incense is a no-brainer to my whimsigoth heart. Turns out, it's my least favorite. This is why you get samples and discovery sets and travel sizes whenever applicable. It's not a bad perfume. Someone who loves all things rose is gonna love this. There are just other rose perfumes from this brand that are doing things I hadn't experienced before. Still a 4/5. Good projection, good longevity. It's just good.
smoky rose. nothing to write home about
Got the discovery set from this brand; was certainly not expecting this to be a rose-forward fragrance. The other notes pop in here and there, but for the most part it's very floral. I feel like a 62 year old woman who works at a crystal store. Not bad, but not for me.
A Radical Rose on a POAL backdrop? Somehow I get "oud" though it's not listed in the notes. POAL's composition & balance remains unmatched.
This one's good. I get a slight hint from sweetie aoud/black phantom's whatever nuance/note that is, combined with its own main accord being the rose. Not an expert but wanted to point that out for the sake of this review.
I’ve never given ELDO the attention it might well deserve for some reason, I’ve always overlooked their offerings. I didn’t expect much going into Spice Must Flow, but what a pleasant surprise! I’m not blown away or anything, but this is one lovely scent. It comes across initially as a gorgeously rich saffron-laden leather, sweet and honeyed yet at the same time rugged and dark. This later transforms into something brighter, with a clean and pulpy pink rose at the heart and a sharp kick of ginger. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly impressive, but I was certainly surprised by it. Perhaps because my expectations were low, but either way I’m enjoying it.
Shared a sample between myself and a friend. Definitely not an office scent. Wear this if you want to get noticed. Not what I expected from the name, but after smelling it I understand the angle. On my friend's skin the rose became background noise while the incence went to the foreground. It also lasts forever. Smells exactly like an old European gothic cathedral. Candles, incense, old wood polish. I found it surprisingly well balanced, if a bit old fashioned. If you want to work through your catholic trauma, get this.
Another rose from ELDO! We have never had that before! (WE DID.) This one smells like cardamom and rose, it's ok but not interesting for me.
