Rose Tonnerre

Overgrown rose garden, late at night after the rain.

Very much a true, realistic rose scent, with a hint of honey. Not delicately sugared rose petals. Not a heavy vanilla-rose gourmand. A huge, dense rose bouquet with green foliage and a damp, humid richness. It's lush. It's sweet and floral yet green and thorny too. A bit of earthiness clings to these stems, and a bit of fresh aromatics is added from the geranium... I picture an armful of long-stemmed roses, and I've just buried my face in the midst of it and breathed in deeply. There's something warm and a tiny bit spicy too - it's not 100% a solifore, but this is a truly rich expression of dense, verdant, classic, deep-red roses. Quite divine to my nose, but I'm a rose lover. This may not appeal to those seeking a "modern" rose - this is a rose-by-any-other-name-will-smell-as-sweet, quintessential rose, with an interesting cast of supporting notes that keep it from feeling unadorned.

This does not like my skin chemistry. Before dry down it was brutal. After dry down it was gone within an hour. Never got the rose.

Rose Tonnerre IS a reformulation of Une Rose, despite what Fragrantica says. They should have two entries. Une Rose utilized Karanal, which was banned in the EU in 2023, though typically there is several years' notice, hence the 2021 rebranding and, yes, reformulation. Both scents are lovely and if anything Rose Tonnerre smells more of truffle than Une Rose, seemingly having a higher opoponax content. Une Rose just has that dark garden je ne sais quoi, though.

I love this one. I love rose and in my search for “the rose” fragrance for my collection, this one really hits the mark. I currently have a sample of it, and in my sample testing today I compared this to MFK’s A La Rose—one on each wrist. While I think both are beautiful, FM’s Rose Tonnerre is more dark at the open and complex throughout its wear. A La Rose is a bright, young rose with that high-pitch juicy floral rose note at the open and pretty much stays the same throughout. This particular scent or “note” I’m describing is one I have noticed in a lot of feminine, rose marketed fragrances, so while it’s not unique, I like it. It’s the rose that’s in A La Rose and Delina, but not in POAL, for example. It’s the juicy, enveloping, delicious floral rose. And when I think of my designated rose fragrance, that bottle’s got to have it. I did this one-on-each-wrist test before too, but didn’t really evaluate them the first time, but I remember thinking at one point when I took a sniff of each of them “wow, they both smell extremely similar”. Now I know it’s because, at least on my skin, at one point they do. But that’s only because RT changes and evolves in such a beautiful and masterful way Here’s how RT evolves: 0-1 hours: deep, dark, juicy rose. It is floral and smells like straight up rose but darker. It’s a sexy, enveloping feminine rose. 2-4 hours: Still lovely and predominantly rose. Around the 2 hour mark it is very similar to A La Rose to my nose on my skin, this is the point that as I sniff both wrists, they smell the exact same. Around hour 3 it transitions to a greener and fresher scent. You can smell the whole of the rose plant, leaves and all. Still rose but it really evolves here. 5-6 hours: Much more musky than rose. This part surprised me. It reminds me a lot of Musc ravageur at this point, but maybe with more with that greenery and rose overlay. More of a skin scent at this point but still beautiful. Overall I love Rose Tonnerre. I enjoy most rose fragrances but what makes this one special, and why I’ll probably purchase a full bottle of this over other rose fragrances (such as MFK’s A La rose, diptique’s Eau Rose) is because this feels more masterfully done and more complex. FM is just so, so good at that.

this is my review of 'Une Rose', bought in 2004. when I searched for it, a whole Pandora's Box opened with all kinds of misconceptions from my side. one 'fact' remains: I find this a fabulous rose perfume. that I already had it under the name Une Rose, made that I thought it was discontinued but in the end Fragrantica made that clear. Une Rose = Rose Tonnerre (Rose of the Storm, Thunder Rose). before I knew all this I remembered this perfume as a Soliflore Rose perfume. a Wonderful, Legendary perfume in my opinion. 'wonderful' has a naive tone, 'Legendary' is a quality only in hindside to be judged. I am more for qualifications like Fabulous, Notoir, Rambunctuous, Intrusionist. and this Rose is all. it is handled in such way that you'd be deceived in thinking it is an impeccable Soliflore. yet soon as you've spritzed this perfume you will notice that there is much more going on. and this, 'sub rosa'. Rilke: “Rose, oh reiner Widerspruch, Lust, niemandes Schlaf zu sein unter sovielen Lidern” (“Rose, oh pure contradiction, joy of being no-one’s sleep under so many eyelids.”) we look here into the (search for the felt and pulsating) heart of the rose and it is an endless journey of honeyed sweetness, an elegant 'citron, citronnade' (for me to smell if it is floral), an as Willing as Demanding perfume of feeling at home in the night. it is a deeply Wined, Spiked (Saffron, Juniper, Castoreum, Coreander, Patchouli, Vetiver, Pink Pepper) Rose doubly embedded in itself, a Use of two Infusions of Rose plus Geranium. Truffle smells as Oud can. the Rose always detracts its Eartiness from woods: Cedar, Sandelwood, Vetiver, Moss. I didn't expected to sense, as also see here the notes, of such Turbulent cartography of Notes. the Rose perfume as well loses its Soliflor Aspect as also affirms it in this wide use of supportive of this most beautiful, elegant, deadliest of flowers.

I usually dont like rose scent and I keep my distance because in Turkey everywhere smells like rose delights,houses etc. opening is little bit harsh like very dominant rose when I first tried I dont like it at all but drydown its get softer and smoother clean rose scent its unisex but lean to feminine

This perfume has been quite a personal journey for me. I bought it rather quickly after discovering it on paper one day, and then wearing it on my skin the next. I grew up in Bulgaria, and one side of my family was of Turkish origin. My childhood was naturally full of that sweet Bulgarian-Turkish Rosa damascena. It came not only as flowers in gardens, parks and vases, but also as rose oil vials that are somehow always lying around when you live in Bulgaria, as my beloved rose petal jam spread on bread, as inexpensive everyday rose-scented soaps and cosmetics, as rose-flavoured Turkish delight, sometimes even covered in dried rose petals. Having grown up with all this as a given condition, I never really cared that much for roses in perfumery, because they often smelled either too familiar and commonplace to me, or worse - simply not true enough. The rose of Rose Tonnerre captures all the memories and experiences I have ever had of rose and condenses them into one larger-than-life idea of what a rose is. Beyond all the forms and incarnations the rose has taken throughout my life, it brings me back to the rose bush in my Turkish grandparents’ garden, blooming in a soft orange-pink and smelling strongest in the morning - right back to that core, perhaps universal experience of discovering the rose as a child: sensing its sweet scent from afar, burying your face into its large flowers to inhale it fully, the golden pistils tickling your nose, your mind lost in pure bliss while your body remains subconsciously alert in fear of leaning too far into its thorns, as inevitably happened the first time you encountered and lost your guard around a rose. I have heard this perfume described as a photorealistic rose, but I think that description somehow falls short, because it is not merely the smell of a rose flower that you encounter here, but rather the idea of a rose. It is like the most magnificent rose you can imagine, purer, richer and truer than any real-life rose you can recall having ever smelled before. For me, the other ingredients no longer stand apart on their own, but are completely absorbed and fused into that rose to reveal its own sweetness, its own pepperiness, depth and groundedness. Together they conjure not simply the real flower, but the myth of the rose. I have read reviews calling this rose Gothic, vampiric - someone below even mentioned that Dracula himself would have worn this perfume. One could perhaps add The Name of the Rose to that dark-fantasy lineage as well. But to me this rose feels more glorious than dark. Still, I am curious to explore that vampiric interpretation too, having just sprayed myself all over with Rose Tonnerre, an unread copy of Dracula resting on my lap.

Je Suis Rose, and all other rose scents, kneel before me. Well, I don't know all other rose scents, but 'regal' is the word that popped up after a temporary lull in brain activity. I've just unpacked and sprayed my sample and gotten a royal slap in the face. Thank you Your Majesty, I deserved that. And may I say, the first flush of this fragrance is blooming gorgeous. The second one too by the way. And the third. Honeyed sharpness, flicker of ruby red wine, warmly thorny. Sweet but never ever cloying, because after all, that would be common. From spiky crown to velvet hem this perfume is majestic, and it's deep red trail leaves no room for apology. Do I have anything to add? No Ma'am, buying my full bottle now.

its the most beautiful scent i have ever smelled. took me to a whole new palate, but none of them gave me the satisfaction i get from une rose.

This is devine. Such a fresh and full bodied rose. Vibrant and robust. It's like being hit smak in the middle of the face with a huge luscious, deeply plum red rose, freshly picked from the garden where it grew with aromatic minty herbs and berries. The person wearing this, is living life at its fullest. Truly a masterpiece.

I love rose perfumes if they are well-crafted. I was very hopeful about this perfume too. Especially the truffle note in it seemed very attractive. But when I first smelled it, I experienced a great disappointment. It smelled like rose lemonade. I had made a blind buy, and I thought it was my most unsuccessful blind buy. Then I gave it another chance, and I realized that when I first sprayed it, it smelled like rose wine for about 10 minutes. Right now, it is truly one of the perfumes I love. It smells like a vibrant, green, juicy bouquet of roses with a glass of newly opened, unaged tart wine next to it. When layered with VCA Moonlight Patchouli, Rose Tonnerre turns into a wonderful and deep scent, but since it is considered a bit monotonous on its own, I cannot say I am in love with it. Still, I am eager to buy its body butter and use it as a base for woody perfumes.

Rose Tonnerre is immediately and unapologetically rose on me. The opening hits as a fresh, very realistic rose, with a green edge at first that reads like stems or leaves. It is strong straight away and for the first stretch it feels quite sharp and very direct. I kept waiting for the fragrance to deepen or for a base to appear and give it more dimension, but on my skin it stayed very linear. For someone who loves an uncompromising rose, I can see this being a powerful signature. For me, it's too much rose with not enough depth or contrast.

I think of this one as a unisex rose through and through. While it starts beautifully, my personal experience is ruined in the dry down. While the scent dries, animalics is start to rise , which I love. The problem is how vegetal it all turns all of a sudden. I wish I loved it, but it seems like it wasn’t meant to be this time.

Vampiric rose. Even though it opens with the same metallic and gothic roses as La Fille de Berlin, within a few minutes it pivots in a different direction. The coldness and minty aromatic feel in Berlin isn't here. What's targeted in this one is deep, blood-colored, velvety roses, because there's an earthy and slightly warm undertone. Bright red, almost burgundy, on the verge of bursting open, outer petals parted but with the inner bud layers still neatly wrapped. You're pressing your nose right into the very center of that rose. That's this scent. I'd wondered if a rose perfume could have its own narcotic version, and I think this is it! A head-spinning, bordering on fainting, intense rose essence. The roses are still very fresh and still alive, but they're also a moment away from ripening. Like the beauty of your thirties. You're both mature and have accepted that you'll grow old. Like the most respected phase of your life. This rose is giving off its most intense scent and biding its time. Notes: wine dinners, vampire themes, gothic choices, black dresses, black or burgundy nail polish... this scent fits all of these perfectly. It definitely has a mushroom-y quality, meaning if you focus hard enough you can pick up this sweetish-earthy tone through all those roses. The metallic feel is heavy at the start, light at the finish. There's a wine feel but it's not yeasty, more like the first whiff of a semi-sweet red wine in the glass. I admit I'm having a bit of a nauseous, smells sensitive day today, it happens. There is a big difference between wanting to smell this and wanting to smell LIKE this. It would be wonderful to receive a bouquet of roses that actually smelled like this... that would be appropriate. I could sniff it occasionally then walk away, smell it from afar when the breeze carries it over. But having it on my body with no escape is suffocating. Up close it is so sour and strong, not a bit of gentleness or hidden notes to take their turns rising up throughout the wearing. This is someone stomping a huge bouquet of wet fresh roses on your face. Broken stems, greenness that is harsh like poison ivy. As my grandmother would say, "The food is terrible but there is so much of it."

To me this has an old school men's cologne smell similar to their others in the range. I can't see much past the vetiver at the moment which is quite frustrating. Could be vetiver extraordinaire. Very clean and one dimensional. Definitly one of the best performing. 1 spray and it follows you from room to room and fills whatever room you're in.

What beauty, after a shower anoint yourself with this hypnotic rose. Im in love. Very realistic rose, I layered it with Creed Wild Vetiver mmmmmm wafts of them together is magical for me.

It’s unsurprising that this is a very predominant rose fragrance. Freshly cut roses with squeezed green stalks sitting next to a bowl of rose scented pot pourri. There are wafts of scent, reminiscent of walking past a briar rose bush on a hot and dusty day. That part is pleasant, however there is a sour, salty, metallic smell that comes through on my skin. Maybe that’s the wine lees? After dry down it softens a little and the rose remains strong and becomes more powdery with hints of violet. But eventually this dissipates and I am left with a mild woody sweet scent with a hint of that sour aspect coming through again. I have a 2 ml tester which I am unlikely to finish.

To my nose this is a very dry, slightly spicy rose. With a very vintage feel. The truffle adds a real earthiness to it amongst the honey tones. The best way for me to describe it is, it’s a bunch of pink roses that were put into a vase a few days ago but no water was added. The rose buds and leaves are starting to dry out. There is still sweet tea rose scent escaping the curled browning petals that smells mired honeyed rather than dewy, but there’s an earthy, musty scent that slightly dusty coming from the crispy dry leaves.

This is a spicy, boozy, green rose. I wouldn't be surprised if the rose stem is used. I get a lot of fruity wine, geranium, and of course, rose. The leathery castoreum comes out in the dry down. I don't smell any truffle though. Apparently, it's been reformulated. There is also a makeup bag/lipstick/powder thing going on as well. This does not smell modern but, it doesn't smell dated either. Very elegant and classy. POAL smells weak compared to this. Reminds me a little of Rose and Cuir

This is an incredibly photorealistic fresh and dewy rose fragrance. Upon spraying we get such a sparkling fizzy burst of fresh roses, florals and pink pepper that is amazingly green and juicy. Than the middle notes emerge and it is soft, fluffy, feminine. The hint of Saffron is so delightful and geranium, which I typically dislike, is blended beautifully to uplift the whole scent. It is a beautiful, very fragrant rose dominant bouquet. Blended harmoniously to stays true to the spirit of freshly picked roses.

I was planning to enter my "fume of the day" as Une Rose, only to see it's no longer listed here, but Rose Tonnere is. I sprayed it on ~ 2 1/2 hours ago (guesstimate), my bottle is prolly 6-7 years old. I'm getting rose, more rose, lotsa rose, wine, and more rose. For me she's Queen Diva Rose and she knows it. I'm not really looking for notes, because she just is who she is. I'm surprised I never added my review to this (as Une Rose) because she always seemed to be The Boss of Roses. I do have a question though, as I do have the Flechier masterpiece, should I sample Rose Tonnerre? I just LOVE my bottle. It is desert island worthy (of course). I suspect the new version would be a disappointment.

Rose Tonnerre is a (very) fine rose perfume in the (very) grand, (very) old tradition. ... and as thus, one must be truly devoted to thee faire rose to fully enjoy it, ...for there is no sugar, peach, litchee, or other florals to add or change its sweetness. Though that aromatic nuance is fairly prominent. Is that coriander and juniper? Yes, Perfumers's Workshop Tea Rose is fairly similar, but more naturalistic, with additional sweet-citric freshness to it. And, to state the obvious, Rose Tonnerre is inarguably Frederic Malle's flagship rose scent. As I recall, it was originally introduced, fairly long ago, with the understated name: Une Rose, ...before the marketers decided something more thunderous might help drive sales. I only mention this because Portrait of a Lady is too often implied to be such; ...but in truth, POAL is primarly an incensed and spiced oriental bawd, ...with only a garnish of rose to affect a ladylike mien. (...and that isn't to say that I don't enjoy it more, of the two)

I loved this perfume. Fresh, rosy, musky. It's gorgeous and sophisticated. I barely feel any geranium at all. Usually I am not a fan of spicy notes in feminine perfumes at all, but here they are very well blended. I agree its classic and timeless.

They destroyed Une Rose.

I like it. One of the better fresh rose fragrances. Has the freshness from geranium but also the lushness of honey. Good balance and versatile. A bit sour, which is nice. Not dated or childish and you won’t encounter it as much as you’d see POAL and its fleet of dupes. I think the longevity was good. Unisex as well.

This beauty is what Creed Carmina aspires to be. Rose of highest quality, with pink pepper emerging from the dense aura of rose. Inoffensive beast of a creature.

I tried a sample of this and the first reaction was: bleeding rose, cold, metallic. I don't even know what that means 😁, but those were the associations the sprang up in my mind at first sniff. I thought, nope, not for me. After three weeks I picked it up again, and today I find it intoxicating and can't stop smelling my arm. It is a mature rose, for sure, not syrupy, still a little cold but so beautiful. I agree with one of the previous users who called it: beautiful. Elegant and timeless. This is a masterfully done rose perfume. Will definitely buy the full size.
