Smells like it is "for old people". Not for me...feminine, floral, old, soapy.

Well the first time i had smelled this, was the bottle of my dad's, after I've got the money for it, it was my first perfume purchase. Equipage is THE perfume for someone who wants to smell vintage, like a gentleman and also bold for its statement. It is very versatile, wearing it in the summer tho might be overkill since it has a strong smell. Anyway imo, its most suitable for the office, since it refines that man in a suit, yet you can also wear it anywhere else. It has gotten me many compliments, being my signature scent. This will forever be a repurchase for me, when my bottle gets empty.

Equipage was the first masculine fragrance for Hermes, created by the legendary Guy Robert. Despite being labelled as an oriental fougere, I think this is more of a chypre scent. Spices, green herbs like tarragon and marjoram, and sparkling aldehydes start this fragrance off with pop of freshness with hints of orange and bergamot. The citrus is short-lived, quickly transitioning into the floral/spicy heart. Carnation provides a spicy, clove-like note with the lily of the valley and cinnamon lending a wonderful powderyness. Leather is not a listed note, but I definitely get leather from Equipage. Not an animalic leather, but a leather that has been freshly scrubbed with saddle soap. Oakmoss and vetiver radiate in the base, rounding off this fragrance with realistic earthy notes. An excellent balance of dirty and clean, soapy notes. Old school masculine fragrance. Subtle, elegant, and inoffensive. Guy Robert was a genius. This is a masterpiece. Incredibly unique despite being as old as my father. I can see how Equipage was used as an inspiration for many men's fragrances in the '70s(Polo, Halston Z14, Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, etc.)

In the ballpark with Ho Hang, but Equipage is a more elegant scent.

The opening is “old style”, in the good way, a little pungent and I get that this can be challenging for someone. But after 30 minutes starts to settle down and with the body heat it gets more inviting, comfortable. I would say very sensual. My wife loves it on me. Back in the days there was probably a different way to design the fragrances. I feel real evolution and a more active reaction with the skin of the wearer. Edit: the more I wear it the more I get the quality of it.

Horrible performance , last 2 hours on my skin. Maybe because my bottle getting old, had it since 2013 . It still smell good and isn’t spoiled but I don’t remember the performance being this bad .

I have a nearly-full 100mL bottle of what I believe is the original formulation that I'd be interested in trading; please DM me if interested. This is a classic, extremely well-blended fragrance -- delightfully heavy on the herbs (the tarragon and sage stand out) in a way that says barbershop-clean, but in a sophisticated old-school way. I can pick out many of the notes if I think about them (carnation, cinnamon, jasmine, bergamot, etc.), yet the overall composition also synergizes in a way that avoids feeling busy or jarring. A masterpiece of Hermes fragrance design and a beautiful antidote to the contemporary shouty gourmand trend--maybe just not how I, personally (as a middle-aged professional woman) want to smell on most days.

I know it's old fashioned it's very masculine, but to me smells very elegant on men.

Fresh and quite old-fashioned chypre fragrance with lots of citrusy notes, tart oak moss and green (and slightly spicy) floral notes. Reminds me of Elite Floris and also Edwardian Bouquet from the same brand.

To me this at least starts out smelling somewhat like a better-blended, more integrated, refined, restrained cousin of the old Dunhill for Men. By the same token, it also smells a little as if someone's just sprayed the old brown-boxed Versace L'Homme in the next room. There is something about the early opening that makes me think of equestrianism and perhaps saddle soap--shades of a subtler Aramis--but some of that accord is gone in seconds. The dry-down is somehow smooth, and slightly--I don't know--soapy, floral, and rounded, but not… fat? Anyway, I find this more classical than challengingly old fashioned but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone wanting to smell youthful or informal.

A quintessential 70s masculine cologne that manages to be relevant today. The second day in a row I get to dip-in to Hermes's line of colognes - I'm one lucky guy! With this cologne, created by the legendary Guy Robert, the story is all about balance. Balance is a 3D characteristic: vertical (depth and evolution), and lateral (breadth, or expansiveness of notes at each stage). On a blotter this cologne smells decidedly more smokey, animalic, and leathery than it is currently presenting on my skin. That said, it smells better on my skin. Beautiful bergamot, sage and other herbs round out a pleasantly subtle floral and spice-laden heart that also contains a less-than-subtle note of smokey pine (cypriol), braced by earthy and leathery notes of mosses, patchouli, vetiver, and musks at the base. This cologne shape shifts, never letting one accord take too much of the stage before ceding the limelight to another. Just when you think that at a given moment the bergamot and herbs are the star, it shifts to the smokey cypriol and pleasant florals - but then, the leathery animalics and aromatics at the base get their say. It seems to shift quite precisely with how my body shifts. If I hold my arm up to my nose and keep it still the heart is most prominent, but when I move about and/or my body temperature goes up from frequent moving then the base carries more volume. Tinges of the beautiful citrus and herbal top notes play at various volumes as the heart or base show up too. The balancing act this cologne achieves is less like a skilled server carrying multiple fine-dining dishes up their arms and more like a ballet dancer swiftly and seamlessly moving from one movement and pose to a completely different movement/pose without you truly being conscious of how they did it. That said though, balletic though it is, it is not feminine or quiet. This is a hairy-chested man's fragrance. It is a product of the 70s through-and-through. But though it carries that old-school masculine confidence, the accords that call to mind the sort of Don Draper big-swinging-dick power broker sauntering into the corner office image, it isn't - dare I say it? - toxically masculine. This is Don Draper should he decide he has nothing to prove, his confidence became quiet rather than brash, all peoples and genders are his equals worthy of respect because nobody or anything can shake his comfortability and confidence in his person. When I want that old-school masculine smell that still manages to be modern and relevant, something powerful and confident without being loud and brash, this is a cologne I consistently reach for. It is excellent and I hope it stays with us for another 55 years and more. I suspect that even by its 110th birthday it will still be relevant and wonderful.

Had the vintage about 40 years ago and decided to buy it again yesterday. It’s still every bit as good as I remember. If LV or TF put this out today TikTok would explode with the glaze. I wish Hermes would make Orange Vert or Citron Noir as a parfum or extrait though. Both 🔥

Aromatic Chypre. Dark green from all beautiful herbs and spices: I find tarragon one of the most prominent notes, along with oakmoss, pine needles, nutmeg and clary sage. Absolutely love it and can't put it down. Classics which is still going strong.

Unfortunately a disappointing blind buy. This is a mildly spicy vetiver fragrance. The perfume has many notes and accords, but the vetiver is dominant and boring. In my opinion, the opening is a linear, sour 4/10 vetiver dominant scent. The fragrance opens up and blossoms a bit and becomes more interesting and multifaceted in the mid but the dry down quickly reverts back to a less than mediocre 4/10. I regret purchasing it.

Rugged elegance.

There is an air of sophistication in Equipage. The wood notes and herbal essence are very refined and handsome. However, there is an odd strain of mustiness (lily of the valley?) that impairs the elegant effect. I don’t know what the note can be, but it kept me from enjoying this classic fragrance when I owned it.

This is a refined, mature scent reminiscent of an autumn forest. The smell is very natural, with strong carnation and oakmoss notes here that last for a long time. The projection is average, but it lasts on the skin for about 12 hours. It has an airy opening and a spicy woody body. I adore this cologne!

Autumn in a bottle. Whenever i wear it, it smells like autumn leaves, or like chrysanthèmes.

Spicy woody floral... It has sandalwood, pine, carnations, bergamot, dry cinnamon, oranges, vetiver, oakmoss, & touches of patchouli. Lily of the valley is quite obvious in here but mingled within the woody notes which makes it bit more rough than suffocating. It is spicy woody floral masculine blend that belongs to classic gang member! It's like the essence of "Merlin" (Mark Strong) in Kingsman movie.. Dunno know why, but this one in particular reminds me allot of "Je Suis un Homme" by Etat Libre d'Orange! I'm very impressed how "Hermes" never butchered their original fragrances with reformulation! like this one for instance, it is almost identical to its 92' version! although it doesn't have that omph in the face impact when you first spray it as in the 92' version, but it is almost 90% identical to that!

Very classy, masculine fragrance with all the quality expected from Hermes. I'd describe it as mainly a spicy type fragrance with a woody accord in the background. Cinnamon is there, but not overbearing - it's not Christmas candle or cinnamon bun strong. The carnation gives it a nice bite. Some soapiness, but just the right amount - no soap bar around your neck impact. Surprisingly good performance for an EdT. About an hour of good projection at arm's length, with a good scent bubble for the next 3 hours and a strong skin scent for 3 hours after that. Equipage strikes me as very versatile - any time, day or night throughout the year, casual or formal. Just an overall top notch fragrance. There's a reason Equipage is going on its second half century. On my FB shopping list.

Update 2.0: Finally decided to buy a bottle after weeks of deliberation and my goodness what a joy this is to wear. This scent smells so natural and pleasant while remaining discreet enough to make it perfect for wearing everyday. This was exactly what I was looking and couldn't be more satisfied. New signature. 10/10

This is a wonderful perfume, very elegant, doesn’t scream aftershave, has a level of complexity in its composition. I don’t find it old fashioned but rather sophisticated, it could suit any age as long as the wearer projects a mature type of confidence.

Vintage formula 10 ml splash with the tv static look box. Woody spicy creamy old fashioned 70's scent - smells like a private library office in a college professors home. I get a huge blast of clove bud though- like the main note- how come clove isn't listed? Lets be honest with note breakdowns. Sort of reminds me of Paco Rabanne pour homme but switch the honey note with clove bud.

For me it's the italian version of Hermès scent : very soapy and clean, and I'm talking about the first formulation. I prefer by far Bel Ami which have its own personnality : leathery animalic fougère. I really dont find it very original, it's kind of french prada : it's pleasant but no more than that.
