There is not much to be said about this perfume that hasn't already been said a thousand times over, however I will try. It smells like the inside of a charmingly rundown antique store hidden away on a side street. It opens quite synthetically and than dries down to a clear amber and almost nuttiness that is quite hard to describe. It smells 30 years old and yet juvenile in its age. Like a woman who understands how the world works, and believes she has lived most of it. It's strong, undeniable, and yet still quite feminine. My mother says it doesn't really smell like a perfume, and I agree. It smells more like a memory, a place, a person. It smells like the hug a dear friend would give you, or the smell of a tea you drank once and could never quite find again. It smells like a slightly over ripe bowl of apricots and peaches, with nuts and spices sitting next to it, and one more hard to find quality, the smell of the person offering you that over ripe bowl. To me this smells like home.
this is a hell of a perfume ! I feel it as a crossing between the (luckily) four times stronger GIORGIO and the exquise CHANEL No 5. but then my story with CHARLIE is still more peculiar, and thus also with CHARLIE GOLD. I love THIS perfume in its own right. it is smashy, flashing, NY, LA and LV together. as a European (Dutch) person I have always loved American perfumes. this isn't either a 'reformulation' of the first, original CHARLIE. yes I have known the original perfume well. I am from 1957 and started ca. 1974 to dabble with perfume (Chanel no 5) and the 1980s were coming. now THAT was my decade. and only the loudest hookers of the lot I loved, along with my mom. Giorgio, Poison, Obsession, Coco, Opium (1977), Knowing, Youth Dew, Bijan, Moschino parfum de toilette. CHARLIE was from the 70s with tons of oakmoss. but that always stayed one of my favorites. if you compare the ingredients lists of both CHARLIE GOLD and CHARLIE, they are totally different. yet they had the same impact. this is a mind lifter. I can (theoretically) imagine someone who hates such perfumes. that is a pity but not my problem. you can clearly smell the peach and apricot, amber, cinnamon and plum. Sandelwood and roses, jasmine and cloves. for me it is a revisiting of the 1980s, but with also a reminiscence to the original which perfume also had an enormous sillage. sultry, bewitching, heady perfumes make me happy. it is as simple as that !
This perfume is loud with zero fk to give. I d9nt this this formulation is constructed well. Your hit by aldehydes similar to what was used in bubble baths of the 70's-90's. The peach is unusual it fades quickly to skin scent. Im using lataffa Khamrah. The spices help round out the chaos. It helps peach out remarkably. Its the only way to wear it.
I ordered this on a whim - it was 100ml for just £5.99 - wasnt expecting too much! What a lovely surprise. It was fairly heady when first sprayed, not unpleasantly so but quite strong. It soon settled to a really lovely honeyed spicy aroma. I could detect apricot or peach, gentle spice. After a few hours it was still very present on my skin and clothing but had mellowed to a gentler version of itself. All in all a proper vintage steal and its won a place in my daily rotation.
Musky on opening and then settles down to something a little more floral and apricot. For $10 this is AMAZING. Not overly complicated, as someone else said. It doesn't have the best sillage but that's alright for $10.
On first spray this definitely reminds me of Tresor (which I absolutely love), but it has a chemical or artificial smell to it that I can't describe properly, but is really offputting. This has happened to me with all of the Charlie's I've tried. I did let it sit for a few months and although it smelled a little nicer and matured, I still am not in love with it, so I won't be keeping it.
Very elegant scent for daytime events! It's not complicated and, honestly, doesn't need to. It is powdery and smells like apricot to me. I don't smell the amber much, but there's definitely a sugary background. After about 3 hours I become noseblind but people can still smell it! It might be a bit too cloying in humid weather, but overall a nice scent for when you want to feel put-together :) PS: it does smell like 'golden' !
Well this is just pure nostalgia in a bottle, I wore this back when I was fresh out of school and straight into nightclubs. The days when the only worry was how you would get money to meet your friends at the weekend. It reminded me that even when I was scint, I still managed to smell nice. I can't believe it has took me so long to buy another bottle, it's very vintage and definitely not for everyone, but if you are familiar with the 90s then you may like it. Charlie gold the smell of my youth 🥰
Don't get scared by the very chemical opening, it's gone in a few seconds! After that it's sweet warm honey amber vanilla apricots and sunscreen. Stays very close to the skin sadly, would love to bask in this scent. Smells like it's edible which makes it sexy in a soft, non-domineering way.
This reminds me of chanel allure but not as smooth and subtle. Its a screechier version, but I still really like it. Its is a go to, when I just wanna smell of something. Like when I get out of the shower or if ive got evening classes. I've gone through maybe 3 bottles of this and I always have one in stock. Its just comforting and easy. Its also reliable in terms of longevity.
There's something maddeningly nostalgic about this. I feel like I'm a small child in the '90s again. I'm having memories from when I was too young to really know what perfume was and thinking some women just smelled like this naturally. It's the scent of teachers and neighbours and aunts. Of maternal hugs, gold costume jewellery, and block heels. It's also a bit beachy, in a waterfall cardigans, fruity champagne, and romantic bonfires kind of way. I'll be honest, at times, when I smell it on my skin up close, it reminds me of a musty, dusty, dirty old storage cupboard. Not sure how often I'll wear this, but really glad I tried it.
I blind bought this about a year ago but don't find myself reaching for it too often but decided to give it a spray today. It's a bit strong and synthetic on the first spray but quickly dries down. Diamonds and Rubies is one of my favourite go to perfumes but Charlie Gold to me hasn't got any big similarities, its her own beast. I get peaches and apricots that aren't too sweet because a deep spiciness and ambery warmth grounds them, there seems to be almost a pepper note to my nose. It's sweet how clove can be sweet instead of being a full gourmand. It's a very cozy scent, like the bigger spicier sister of Fire & Ice. The base notes are creamy, ambery with some vanilla but keeps that spiciness throughout.
Glade Potpourri air freshener meets Tresemme Hair Spray. They have a too-long fling with lots of cheap drama. This is their baby.
This is what I would call a safe 90s scent. For the price, it's okay. Nothing remarkable. It doesn't smell like Tresor to me. It does share some similarities with ET,s Diamonds and Rubies but Charlie gold takes a different turn after the initial spray. I will group them in the same fragrance category. That's about it. It's not a perfume I will repurchase.
What a nostalgic, timeless retro smell. It takes me back to being a little toddler and hugging my grandma and smelling similar perfumes on her. It also lasts forever and has decent sillage too, and for the pirce especially? Banger
After all the recent buzz and reviews on Charlie I couldn't resist getting red, blue and gold at £3.75 a bottle. I grew up in 1970's so remember the original. The gold is lovely, really warm peach vanilla. Perfect for autumn. I can't believe how good this is for the price. In fact stunned, not at all synthetic smelling. I have of late started to get a bit snipey about the cheap nonsense being churned out by perfume houses and designer brands.
Beautiful balsamic sweetness, not sugary, not cloying..I am a Charlie girl, all dose fragrances are beautiful and unrated.Gold is warm, luxury, very 90 es,great for cooler weather, gold doesn't have some specific age group. If you like ambery, you will love this fragrance.Performans is good, and, amazing low price.
I’m not crazy about this one. It starts off very strongly floral, very artificially sweet, and peachy. Like those gummy peach rings, not the real fruit. 😅 It has some of the original Charlie DNA in it…kinda smells like hairspray, at first. It does smell very “80s”, which is not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself. I’m not getting any of the caramel accord others mention, nor do I smell any spicy notes whatsoever. To my nose, this is a strong fruity floral, and it stays that way from start to finish. It’s OK, I don’t hate it. I could see this being headache-inducing if over sprayed. There’s an element of artificiality to it that bothers me. Like a car air freshener. 🌲🍒 Longevity is about 4-5 hours. Projects loudly for first hour or two before settling in. P.S. @Ting Test, I smell the “rubber duck” thing too. 🤣
Simply beautiful, oriental fragrance for all generations. Highly recommend in winter time.Charlie gold is not gourmand fragrance . This sweetness is balsamic and classy.Compliment getter, good performance and extremely low price.Higly recommending! Scent for happy winter days...
@ShadowsofLight I wonder if you left it at the Goodwill I visited today! (Stranger things have happened..) I was so sad I didn’t have any left, so was so happy to have found an almost full bottle of Charlie Gold for $5.99 + 1/2 off red tag! :) I kept thinking, “thank you to whomever left this here for me”! Even if it wasn’t the same bottle, bless you! ❤️ I appreciate your writing :)
I really thought I would enjoy this more, it looks to be right up my alley. I tested this in Goodwill and am...a little ambivalent. Yes, the amber is rich and spicy, yes, it's jammy, but it feels scratchy. It does absolutely soften considerably with time, and I applied this around an hour and a half ago. It's more powdery in the drydown, and I feel the sandalwood in my throat as much as I can smell it. Dry, plush...not realistic, yet enjoyable. The most notable flower that emerges within this is rose, but even though carnation isn't listed, I smell something along those lines as well. It's so uncanny, because I've been thinking about Trésor today due to a comment made. This fragrance is nice, there's no denying that, but it leaves me craving Trésor instead (I feel Trésor is much poofier, softer, and even more jammy, but without the scratchy quality of this). I'm always grateful for an opportunity to try a classic, it's part of the journey, but I left this one for someone else to find and adopt 🧡🤎
Charlie Gold is my favourite from the Charlie line. It’s honeyed peach with golden amber that’s dry and slightly powdery. It reminds me of my beloved and discontinued Gucci Accenti but without the obviously vintage animalics. I sprayed 4 times then went for a springtime walk along the lakeshore and enjoyed smelling my powdered peaches with honeycombed amber. I don’t find it vintage, in fact, one of my 20-something colleagues (who isn’t even old enough to know that Revlon even made fragrances) asked me what I was wearing as she liked it. Charlie Gold is not as powdery-cloying as Tresor, it’s not as warm spicy as Diamonds & Rubies, it’s not as pineapple-y as Mackie, it’s not as yellow floral forward as Poeme - to me it’s much closer to Gucci Accenti than any of these others. It’s so cheap that it’s 100% worth trying - but my snobby side wonders if it’s too cheap to become a signature.
I bought this a few years ago, and instantly hated it. I though that maybe I just don't get along with predominantly amber leaning perfumes. Another blind buy fail! I've stashed it away, forgot all about it until a few days ago, so thought I'd give it another go. Has my nose changed? Because now this is really lovely! It is quite old school, but is warm and cosy, a fruity caramel amber. I think it was recommended as a autumn/winter scent, but it's springtime here and warming up, and I love this on warm skin! It's quite scratchy/rough in places, so I would love to find something similar with rounder smoother edges.
Literally so comforting and feminine and seductive. Imagine a lady standing at the beach as the sun sets on her, wind blowing in her hair ever so slightly. Then she sits on the sand, basking in the setting sun. This is a caramel powdery sex bomb. God it is addicting on the skin i cannot stop smelling my arm. So fruity, powdery, warm, its like having sweet, syrupy pancakes covered in powdered sugar and enjoying them for a late dinner at a beach house. I can see this scent being perfect for winter too, but something radiates summer for me. Like, summer around 6-11pm. So delish. I can only imagine how it smells being sprayed in the hair and the wind tussles it along.
I got a bottle of this around 6 years ago and hated it because it smelled so overbearingly 80s - even if it`s from the 90s - all hairspray and skin-colored pantyhose, I almost believed I had gotten a fake - but who bothers faking an old cheapie like this? Anyway, on a whim I tried it again today, and hello... it`s turned into a lovely slightly spiced dark apricot jam with plum undertones on an ambery base. Still very decidedly 80s/90s, very very retro, but very enjoyable and comforting now. This one, it seems, really needed to sit for a while. Absolutely going to put this one on more often at home and I`m sure it`ll be a great pick for cooler days too. Happy I didn`t discard it
I got a brand new full bottle for $8, which is insane for 100mL. It's not the scent profile I usually go for, but it smells okay. I use this every now and then after showering. The only thing I don't like about it is the initial spray, the fruit notes clash with each other, and it's overbearing, like an uberly sweet fizzy fruit drink. The dry down kinda reminds me of Revlon Fire & Ice, just without the incense notes. Longevity and sillage are decent as well.
I don’t get the Tressor or the Diamonds and Rubies association personally on me it doesn’t smell like that. I get Dolce Vita mixed with Escape. I think as I said in another review somewhere, Revlon do a very good job of mixing together high end designer perfumes to make one of their own. You can never say yes it’s Tressor because it isn’t as sweet as Tressor it has the aquatic smell of Escape but the cosmetics smell of Dolce Vita. It reminds me of my Grandmother when she had lipstick and makeup on and would give me a hug this is the smell of cosmetics and perfume mixed together. The Charlie Blue seemed like a few high end perfumes one of which was Paris by Yves Saint Laurent mixed with Guerlain.
First off, this is 100% a vintage fragrance of the early 90s but feels even older: 1960-70s. It's an amber bomb as well. If these things don't appeal to you then don't even waste your money. You won't like this fragrance. I think I had a bottle of this in the mid to late 90s along with the original Charlie which was my signature fragrance for years. Even when I could afford higher quality compositions, that fragrance blended so well with my skin that I wore it much more often than my designer fragrances from that time period. Gold is ambery, warm, spicy, with touches of rose, citrus, peach and cedar. There's even a bit of powder at the very end of an inhalation. The notes are difficult to parse out which is quite typical with vintage scents with lots of notes. I find that I need to be heavy-handed with this one because my brain is so familiar with this scent profile. I wear it at home so that I can create a fabulous scent bubble that won't offend others. It's so cozy and would layer beautifully with Revlon Ciara. Revlon Red is also another solid choice for layering if you want that slightly sweet, white floral energy. I love this composition. It's perfumey but I grew up with this sort of fragrance DNA so it smells familiar and cozy to me. If you're a Charlie fan this is blind buy safe. It's so inexpensive that you really should. And if you can't leave a review without being juvenile and whiney with just one or two sentences as to why you feel such loathing then don't bother leaving a review at all. That kind of "opinion" comes off as immature and no one really cares that you feel this way.
Smell like rubber toy for me, like rubber duck😩
First blast: I just pepper-sprayed my soul. Imagine a flaming Claire’s clearance rack piloted by a raccoon on bath salts that’s the greeting. My throat filed a restraining order. I exiled the bottle to the balcony; the scent broke back in wearing combat heels and eyeliner it borrowed from 1994. Room still reeks of bad decisions and unwashed glitter, like Courtney Love’s tour bus carpet. In panic I marinated it in Phlur Caramel Skin basically dumped sugar on a tire fire and the unholy brat mellowed into a smoky, salty, crème-brulee fever dream. Now it smells like a hot cryptid who welds scrap metal into sex furniture and only texts at 3 a.m. Lesson: marry your nightmare, add caramel, watch it catwalk.
