Perfume Calligraphy Rose

I was not aware Aramis made a unisex version of Caligraphy as claimed here. My vintage bottle says for men and its a masculine rose unlike anything else in the rose genre. I'll have to find this "unisex" version to compare.

My passion for rose-centric fragrances was re-ignited after a recent disappointment with Frederic Malle "Portrait of a Lady." So, I remember owning, wearing and loving the original POAL formulation way-back-when. To my nose, the fragrance was other-worldly. And the new editions are not what I recall. I read so many wonderful reviews about Amaris "Calligraphy Rose." So, it seemed a no-brainer to blind-purchase an unopened 100ml bottle on eBay at a great price. Upon application, I wanted to cry but not in a good way. I found the balsamic opening with oregano & saffron to be overwhelmingly pungent and off-putting. Having read nearly all the Fragrantica reviews, I decided to give the fragrance some time; so I patiently waited. Unfortunately, the sharp, pungent, medicinal, briny opening notes never depart. My nares and the olfactory sensors in my brain feel assaulted. I struggle to detect anything but a muted, briny, fermented, wine-like rose. After 90 minutes or more, the perfume settles into a slightly jammy, red rose fragrance. The perfume is okay, I suppose. But to my nose, there are much nicer and similar, rose-centric fragrances on the market...and you don't need to push through a difficult opening. Very disappointing.

I gave away a second bottle of this gem to someone. That was of course before finding out it was going to be discontinued. I now only have 30 ml left in my first bottle 😭 You live, you learn.

The myrrh and resinous accords is almost exactly like SL Ambre Sultan. So now I layer Ambre Sultan with Aigner True Icon to create Rose Calligraphy. You’re welcome.

I'm interested in trying this one but sadly it's discontinued... Does anyone know of a relatively inexpensive clone perhaps? Maybe a Lattafa or Swiss Arabian? I'm genuinely curious about this one but can't afford to break the bank... PM me, thanks!

My favorite rose fragrance

I don't like intense, sweet, jammy roses but I love this one. This rose is very strong, nevertheless I Iove it. Intoxicating, majestic! In the kingdom of Scheherazade indeed... as mentioned below. 9/10

A VERY SEDUCTIVE ROSE The first rose petals were found as fossils in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and date back more than 32 million years. Historically, the domestic rose is thought to be a flower that originated in Asia and was first cultivated over 5,000 years ago. The Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used this flower both as a decorative element, for body care and as a bathing scent. One of the historical figures who boosted the popularity of roses in modern times was Empress Josephine, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was a passionate rose grower. In her garden at the "Chateau de Malmaison", she had one of the largest rose beds in Europe and her gardens did not stop growing until she died in 1814. It was also in France that, in 1816, the first hybrid perpetual rose - the "Rose du Roi" - was produced in the royal gardens of Sèvres in Paris. From a more mystical perspective, the rose has been associated with the figure of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene and Saint Elizabeth Queen of Portugal (but who was born in Aragon). It is also the symbol of the Rose Cross Order, which stylises a cross with a white rose in the centre and has become a symbol of Christian esotericism. All species of 'Rosaceae' are amazingly beautiful and have continuous flowering. Robust growth and great immune defence against diseases have also been its characteristics since the beginning of its cultivation. An interesting fact is that the petals have both perfume and flavour. In addition to decoration in bouquets, branches and clusters, roses are used in the production of medicines, and infusions for aromatic teas, cosmetics and perfumes. A total of 126 original wild species have resulted in more than 30,000 hybrids due to human intervention, and these flowers are spread all over the world. The particular scent that most people associate with roses belongs to the very well-known Damask Rose. Roughly speaking, there are at least six main types of scents coming from different types of roses, namely Traditional (better known as Damask), Spicy (mainly with notes of anise, clove or myrrh), Fruity (with notes of raspberry, lemon, apricot, peach or banana), Tea, Moss and Musk. Being more objective, in perfumery, you could describe the traditional rose scent as floral and fresh, but it can have delicate nuances of powder, geranium, berry, plum, apple, lemon, tobacco, grass and clove. The rose chord delivers a fantastic aroma, both seductive and complex, and is increasingly used for unisex and men's fragrances, in addition to its traditional choice in women's perfumes. Several much-loved perfumes are distinguished by their strong rose note. As examples, I could mention labels like "Déclaration d'Un Soir by Cartier, "Portrait of a Lady" by Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, "Armani Privé - Rose d'Arabie" by Giorgio Armani, "Florabotanica" by Balenciaga or "For Her" by Narciso Rodriguez. I really like all of them. However, my rosy preference rests on a rather mystical, terribly seductive and deeply oriental rose perfume. I refer to one of the masterpieces of the Estée Lauder group, but included in the Aramis brand, the "Perfume Calligraphy Rose" launched in 2013. This unisex perfume awakens with spicy nuances but immediately floods us with a strong note of Turkish Rose. The Turkish Rose is a variant of the Damask Rose, specifically grown in the Isparta region of Turkey. The scent of this rose is fresh and floral and adds hints of blonde woods, black plum and saffron. While I consider this rose to be the main performer in this Aramis, it integrates into a stage profusely adorned with myrrh resins, styrax, labdanum and frankincense. We can't detach ourselves from the deeply enigmatic and esoteric Middle Eastern ambience. We entered the kingdom of Scheherazade, the legendary Persian queen narrator of the tales of The Thousand and One Nights. We feel transported to a Turkish seraglio amidst its luxury cushions and translucid coloured veils. My rating for this ambience of romance and seduction: ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ - Opening: 9.0 (The fragrance opens a bit spicy, but you feel immediately a strong rose whiff in your nostrils with an ambary background) - DryDown: 9.5 (A fainting rose in a turmoil of resins) - Longevity: 8.5 (3 sprays last up to 8~9 hours) - Sillage: 8.0 (5~6 feet of sillage and up to 2.5 hours of projection, with 3 sprays.) - Uniqueness: 7.5 (Not really unique although it presents me with the oriental rose blending, I like the most. it recalls some other fragrances like "Rose Oud" by Kilian, "Spice Must Flow" by Etat Libre d'Orange, and "Beyond Rose by Clinique, to name only a few) - Wearability: 7.5 (Not suitable for mild or hot weather; a winter and fall fragrance) - Versatility: 8.5 (Unisex fit for day or night use mainly at leisure or for a night event) - Praise: 8.0 (Not consensual as oriental scents haters or fresh scent lovers will probably reject it. Nevertheless, I assure you that most heads will turn in your direction and will love your scent) - Quality: 9.0 (Well above average quality impression) - Presentation: 9.0 (Simple and attractive; The label evokes an oriental ambience without mistakes) - Price: 8.0 (This perfume price is quite variable depending on the shop where you buy it. It seems that it is becoming a bit rare and prices are rising. My 100ml bottle cost me €45, five years ago. Nowadays you are bound to find it with more expensive price tags, probably above €100) ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ Overall rating: 8.41 / 10.00 - between 7 and 8 = above average; - between 8 and 9 = recommended; - above 9 = definitely not to be missed; My opinion: I can only recommend "Perfume Calligraphy Rose" if you like the rose note. If you like the rose note and, on top of it, you are passionate about oriental scents, you must own this perfume or at least try it. If you want to buy it, please hurry because prices are currently rising. I may suggest you try also its saffron brother "Perfume Calligraphy Saffron" which eases up a bit in the rose note and adds a bit more saffron. Like a good quality Rose Turkish Delight. Delicious. A shame they discontinued it.

Saffron, rose, styrax.....like beeswax and rose liquor. I see a lot of people describing this perfume as "chewy" and I'll agree; like rose lokoum or rose confiture. It's a bit musky and powdery but not terribly. Projects well, lasts for hours with different notes coming in and out the whole way. The vibrant red colored liquid in the bottle adds to the experience.

Powdery, clean, mysterious musky rose. Projects from the skin giving a good sillage and above average performance. Rose is not too green, nor too chewy or plastic, nor too dark. It’s effervescent, fresh and powdery with a mystical aura. Great for layering and probably better in the evening. Unisex with a tad bit feminine leaning to me due to the powdery touch. Amazing scent profile though. Shukran Habibi!

I cannot simply attempt to top the review left by @RosaMilena for this exquisite balsamic rose. A breathtaking visual created for this beautiful juice. Phenomenal review! Rose Calligraphy is dense and sweet but not in a cloying, candied way. This perfume doesn’t take that avenue. The saffron in the beginning is wonderful, embroidering the rose with its threads of spiciness. The resins lend their caramel like density to the composition with a gentle smokiness lingering. The oregano isn’t dry, it’s as if it has been freshly picked and left in the slow, humid heat of the day—it is moist and balmy. I think the oregano and resins work together to create a “chewy” texture within the composition which is what I’ve found a few reviewers below feel in this perfume. The lavender is just a gentle whisp giving an aromatic touch—which I feel prevents RC from verging on almost gourmand. Overall, this is a velvety, plush, jammy rose creation which isn’t sugared or candy like—its silky petals under an ambery blanket, formed by resinous and balsamic notes—slightly sticky and thick in nature. It is nothing short of genius, a divine blend, masterful perfumery. The myrrh delivers a soft, comforting aura and a gentle smoky nuance, from the oregano and lavender you get a delicate aromatic embellishment. The musk and ambergris create a fluffy and slightly salty base, the balsamic sweetness follows its way into the dry down which works beautifully with the musk and ambergris notes. An abstract take on a classic floral in my opinion. I wear this in all seasons because I don’t care teehee. It lasts around 6-8 hours I find, so decent longevity. Persists well in warmer weather. On cloth the scent is quite different but I find it to be still, quite stunning. On my skin, this has quite an evolution and is in no way linear. I find smokiness, aromatics, syrupy nuances shine through at different intervals. On cloth it is still thick and dense, mainly resins and a glint of rose. Aaah, so nice. This perfume is a work of art and truly a unique olfactory experience during its wear. A huge mistake discontinuing the production of this. One of the best and most unique roses my nose has ever encountered.

Ah my heart ❤️ so thankful with autumn temperature changes it feels time to wear this beauty again. Time in the cupboard has deepened the scent. The glorious red juice. So chewy, yet light and fluffy - such contrasting textures. The balsamic notes lifting up like a gorgeous sweetened black tea and then diving back into a dark powdery rose. I’ve missed you and now we can dance again. Anytime wear. (For me) just glorious. Different and yet I also love to wear her “sister”, Roses Berberanza too 😍

I love fragrances with rose. Let’s be honest you can’t get any better than this. Sweet luxurious, spicy rose done in the best possible way. Yes, it may be too much, but it’s all about the rose…

This perfume is similar to the smell found in the holy shrines, such as that in the holy Karbala and Najaf Al-Ashraf, those are the smells of heaven

Just wanted to add a note here. Now that the seasons are beginning to change, I was looking through my cool weather perfumes, pulling a few out for now in anticipation. I was also making decants for a swap with another Fragrantician, so I pulled out my bottle of C. Rose. Don't get me wrong - I've liked it since first purchasing, but I seldom wore it. I suppose that's part of the Curse of the Perfumista - having hundreds of bottles, but inevitably realizing that only a fraction of them are worn with any frequency. Anyway, as I was making my decant, I inadvertently sprayed some on myself. It smelled as I remembered it, but over the course of maybe 20 minutes, I became enraptured by the smell! I am convinced that the time it spent undisturbed had deepened it's beauty, and as it unfolded on my skin, I fell deeply in love. I'm talking top shelf, must-have-in-my-life love. I decided to wear it today - the weather is still warm, but the air conditioner intervened with magnificent results. I've been wearing it for about 7 hours now, and it's still going strong, with great sillage and projection. So even though I reviewed it once at least a year ago, I felt compelled to share this experience. While I always allow my purchases to rest awhile before I review them, it's now quite clear to my that some perfumes really do require a period of hibernation, so to speak, before they reach their optimum level of mastery. If you're lucky, like all good things, the results are worth the wait!

Didn’t like it . It smells like a spicy rose jam, more feminine. Sold it , every time I remember this one makes me feel nauseous. Although the composition itself smells expensive. But it’s somehow disturbing. Worst blind buy ever.

Very balsamic and spicy. I think Amber balsamic?! Not for daily use, is too dangerous imp. This is like almost typycal mosque perfume. Sometime give the wise old man vibes

Absolutely amazing..No words to describe...I'm so lucky to have one.

I got this in a sample from a friend and it was nice. It has a deep quality to it and isn't grandma-ish like some roses can be. I didn't know what the notes were before this and It kind of smells like something I have smelt before but I can't pinpoint what. To me, it smells reminiscent of Raghba because of the spice except with rose and less sugar. After reading the nose, I can detect the saffron, rose and some resinous scents. It balances out beautifully!! For me, it's not full bottle worthy but it is definitely a beautiful elegant rose scent. There are probably dupes alike this so I don't know if I would reccomend for the price but it does have amazing longevity and sillage.

I tried this several years ago at a Saks and remembered liking it a lot but could not remember what it smelled like exactly so I ordered a sample and tested it out today. This stuff is so classy & easy to wear. Beautiful velvety amber & rose. Jammy with a deep vanilla ladened ambergris base. I normally dont care for ambergris but here its evenly balanced with the fruity sweet powdery rose. Compliment getter & crowd pleaser.

This starts out herbal and spicy. The saffron and oregano come through very strong w/ a very herbal lavender. Then it softens and gets sweeter w/ a very jammy/fruity rose. The dry down is sweeter still w/ resins and musk's but the herbal qualities of the lavender, and oregano still linger. This perfume leans unisex. A very interesting take on rose that I like very much. Edit 10/8/21 I still like this but my husband really liked it for himself and so I gave it to him. It does lean a bit masculine anyway because of the oregano. Smells great on him. Edit: 10/12/22 My husband has been wearing the decant I gave him off and on since I bought it last year and it smell so great on him. A nice perfume friend here gave me a sample of Clinique's Beyond Rose and I saw the similarities to Caligraphy Rose right away, so I wore the sample which was about 2 mils. Halfway through my day the perfume was waning, so I put on a couple sprays from the Caligraphy Rose decant and for some reason the opening didn't get to me like it did before when I first experienced this perfume. When I wore it back in 2021 the lavender and oregano was more pronounced for me and that is why I thought it was something for just my husband. When he wore it, I enjoyed it but again the lavender and oregano stood out. Now fast forward to 2022 and wearing it for myself again I want a full bottle in the worst way. This is a massive sillage beast, longevity is to die for. Jammy rose beauty w/ olibanum, and myrrh that just takes my breath away. I hate buying things on ebay but I just don't have a choice here I have to have this before someone else buys it. I am going to upgrade this to a love. This is a perfume that should never have been discontinued.

I agree with the review below. I’m surprised “sweet” isn’t listed as an accord. This is a sweet thick heavy rose jam. It makes me want to grab a spoon and toasted baguette because it smells almost edible. Great performance with this in all areas. Unisex leaning feminine. If you’re someone who enjoys very sweet rose jam scents you’ll enjoy this. I overspray a lot but with this you don’t need more than 4-5 sprays max.

It smells like the holy shrines in the Middle East. Rose scent along with a large amount of myrrh and vanilla. Calligraphy Rose has a very sweet, warm and almost heavy scent, and it is strange that the "sweet" accord are not listed between the accords of this perfume on this site. It's so sweet that if you use this perfume and drink espresso coffee, you will not feel the bitterness of coffee! The interesting point of Calligraphy Rose is the praise of this perfume by professional reviewers... Europeans and Americans love the scent of roses and rose scent is one of the most fashionable scents for them. اگه خیلی به روایح معنوی علاقه دارید این عطر خودِ جنسه و شما رو به وسط یه امامزاده پرتاب میکنه:) رایحه رز در کنار حجم زیادی از رایحه صمغ مر و وانیل. کالیگرافی رز یه رایحه خیلی شیرین و گرم و تقریبا سنگین داره و عجیبه که آکوردِ شیرین بین آکوردهای عطر تو این سایت ذکر نشده. اونقدر شیرینه که اگه این عطر رو استفاده کنید و قهوه اسپرسو بخورید، تلخی قهوه رو احساس نمی کنید! نکته جالب این عطر تعریف و تمجید افراد خارجی و ریویونویس های حرفه ای از این رایحه هست... اروپایی ها و آمریکایی ها عشق رایحه رز دارن و عطرهای با رایحه گلاب خودمون براشون جزئه شیک ترین روایح بشمار میاد.

I really wish I could smell what so many other's seem to be able to smell here. I had such high hopes for this fragrance. To me, this is so dry it has a cardboard feel, and so medicinal I feel like I am smelling a bottle of saffron. Unfortunately, that medicinal note stays that way throughout much of the wear. The spice is overriding all the other notes. The rose is there, but covered with a veil of spice. I'm waiting for all the other notes to appear and it's just not happening. This is the third time I've tried this fragrance, under different weather conditions, with the same result. Honestly, I find it almost abrasive. I happen to like middle eastern style perfumes but I don't really care for this one. There is another ME style perfume in the same vein that I happen to really like. Beyond Rose by Clinique also starts the same way, but then the gorgeous honeyed rose becomes the star, along with velvety oud notes. It is simply stunning. I was hoping something similar would happen here, especially with a perfume where rose, according to the fragrance name, should be the focal point. But it's just not happening. Glad I only got a travel sprayer of this one.
