Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 245 ------------------------------------------------------- Purchased July 2025 - NOS Dark Rebel has matured as a product and as a scent within our time. It's not bringing out sugar to me, more of a resinous pine wood after heavy rain. There's also an animalic vibe to it. Overall, it's a leathery, pine needle, animalic booze scent that's very, very slightly sweet. Dark Rebel is almost too manly and off-putting for an ordinary man - but if you're not like that, then you don't have to be careful. Batch: 5KC2 from August 2015.

I just sprayed on some of this and it's a very nice manly frag. I'm wearing all black today, stepping out tonight and the temp is in the 60s. It's really projecting right now and fits my vibe today. The descriptions posted by others here who like it are on the money. Have several unopened bottles which I acquired when it was first released. Picked up a third bottle (cool looking by the way) about 4 or 5 years ago at Burlington for $16 on clearance, and it's the one I cracked open. Glad I decided to wear this one. I also have the Rebel Rider and that's next for tomorrow.

This one has mostly flown under the radar since its initial release. I think many people throw their hands up and dismiss it when it comes up conversation just because of the brand. JV is a house that puts forth many average offerings with average performance. This one is definitely an outlier. The opening on this is mind blowing and one of the best things I have ever had the pleasure of smelling. The rum, cardamom, sweetness, smoke, pepper, leather, and incense. It's a medley of smooth darkness utterly blended to near perfection if you are fan of dark sense fragrances. As the fragrance dries down, it loses the booze and transitions into a woody incense fragrance. The middle and dry down aren't nearly as spectacular as the opening, but they are still very good. Projection is huge from the beginning but settles down relatively quickly. It still gives arm's length sillage for a few hours afterwards. In the last few hours sticks rather close to the skin, with a total wear time of about 7 hours on skin, longer on clothing. It performs well enough, with the caveat that most of the fragrances I own of a similar style do have better performance: most are what people refer to as "beast mode" fragrances, this is not. This is a fragrance best saved for the cool months, I could see this being completely overwhelming in the late Spring and Summer. I would keep the wearing between October and early April, depending on where you live. Definitely a more masculine fragrance, if you are going by contemporary fragrance gender conventions. I could see some women pulling this off, especially if they are going for a darker aesthetic, my wife doesn't like it, even on me! Overall, this was a fantastic effort by JV, and it's a real shame that it gets dismissed by many just because of the brand. This was discontinued somewhat recently and is really starting to climb in price. The Dark Rebel Rider flanker is also discontinued and did not receive the same level of praise from enthusiasts as the original. I am very pleased to have this in my collection. 92/100

@ J.raphael03 Tahari Black is nothing like Dark Rebel. To me, Tahari Black smells like a more like a weak eau de cologne version of Arabian Oud's Arabian Knight (gold version), and I believe it is a clone of that regardless of what notes they list. While I am here, I may as well give this puppy a review!

Dark Rebel is a bold, masculine scent centered around rum, leather, and sweet sugar cane, giving it a smooth, slightly boozy opening. As it settles, tobacco and woods come through, adding a smoky, rugged vibe with a touch of warmth. It leans very “rockstar” — perfect for nights out or cooler weather, and honestly feels like a budget-friendly Tom Ford style fragrance. It’s also getting harder to find now, which adds to its appeal. The scent stands out and gets attention, but the performance is average and doesn’t last as long as you’d hope.

The tobacco leaf notes and the wood are very long, lasting.

Dark Rebel by John Varvatos is a wonderfully smoky and rebellious fragrance that immediately grabs your attention. The opening is rich with dark, aromatic vibes; think warm spices, charred woods, and a smooth, slightly sweet undertone that feels both intriguing and bold. As it develops, the leathery and resinous facets deepen beautifully, giving it a rugged yet refined character that’s perfect for evenings or cooler weather. The dry-down stays warm and memorable, with solid longevity and a trail that’s unmistakably confident. This is a scent I genuinely enjoy wearing and one that I absolutely love for its unique, edgy charm.

bought it a decade ago during my university, back then that fragrance smelled unique , and gave insane aura when wearing with a black leather or denim jacket

Based on recollection, Tahari Black is a cheap fragrance that gets very close to Dark Rebel. Check it out before overpaying for the original. Other than that, both fragrances are very unique in my opinion, not mass appealing, but dark, mysterious, and still pleasant. Sugary, sweet, dark leather, if that makes sense. I do not wear it often, but on the occasion that I do, man, it is good and unique. Dark Rebel, as long as you are not overpaying, is fantastic. Tahari Black, due to the cheap cost, is awesome.

I ordered a large 10ml decant of this and I'm getting "leathery christmas tree". A neighbor said I smelled like "old 1980s cauc male" and I don't get where that's coming from, but I don't know what his experiences are....the wife liked the scent a lot and asked me to wear it again, so that's a positive vote. However, something made me sick...dunno if this frag was the cause but I went thru 24hrs of hellacious headache and nausea after wearing this. I'll try it again in a month...if it makes me sick again then I'm throwing this bottle into traffic.

A very weak version of TF Black Laquer to me, without the ink. Wish the performance were better, because this would be great.

I think this fragrance is deserving of some of the hype around it. I've flirted with some leathery, tobacco fragrances such as Bvlgari Black Orient, and this one wins. A wonderful blend of rum, leather, and tobacco. Not too over powering and wonderfully addictive. It's summer time and I find myself wearing it to bed because it smells that good. Enjoy.

Ordered vintage vers from Ebay + 2weeks delivery. Smell very so so.. not strong animalic as some guys mentioned, can't detect castoreum too - the note I expected the most. Smell warm, leathery, easily wear - Need not a leather jacket or captain Sparrow style. LOL.

this is what a sexy man should smell like. Not for the 20somethings that go clubbing. there is a lot of depth in this. Smokey, leathery woods. Im finding the cardamom and rum dissipate a bit too quickly for my liking but it is absolutely perfect for me and my personality. I just wish people considered it a summer fragrance so I could wear it year round.

Looking for a good edp analogue to this. Tien Ma was working for me, but leans a little too heavy.

Recently broke this out after a few years and to try a lite layer with Afnan's 9PM. Suprised by the result & received multiple compliments that evening. Might be a night out go-to for awhile.

Surprisingly very airy, with something smoky that is so delicate you hardly feel it — a note that is difficult and placed here in microscopic doses. It’s not my direction, has nothing to do with Gucci Absolute, nor really with anything leathery.

I’m sure I left a review for this a long time ago. But this is more of a PSA anyway. We had thunderstorms tonight. Although it’s almost summer, it’s a bit cool. So I thought “let’s find something dark to wear.” Being a bit of a collector, things get lost in the shuffle. Like a drug addict, you’re looking for your next high. I remember buying this when it first came out - thinking it was great - and then never really wearing it because I was waiting on my next scent to arrive, then the next, and the next - over 10 years, it sat. Tonight it was chosen. In my opinion - and out of the thousands of fragrances I’ve owned, smelled, bought and sold - this stands on its own. Simply one of the most unique, dark and stunning scents available. It’s not made to be mass appealing (although checking the ratings, it seems to be) - it doesnt follow the typical bullshit BR540 or Aventus recipe. It really is just its own thing. I feel like an idiot. Always trying to find “the next stunner” - when it’s been sitting - barely ever used - for 10 freakin years. A designer scent no less. What a fantastic scent. By the way - what a perfect name. Captures the vibe perfectly.

Don´t remerber who hype this fragrance, but I tested days ago. It´s bad, I mean there´s nothing fabulous or unique in this scent. Really bad burned leathery vanilla with green note on the top.

Opening is great - mostly leather & incense. Gives off a scrappy vibe. Dry down isn't bad, it just loses some of its edge and ultimately becomes more of a muted, spicy frag that's safe for the office. I personally prefer the opening as it's more nuanced.

Nothing crazy. People are acting like this is the most badass fragrance ever. It's manly sure, but pretty tame. Performance is mid. I kept sniffing and sniffing and I couldn't think of what this reminds me of, then it hit me. Gucci Envy! It's been probably 16 years since I ran out of Envy so not sure how close they are but it's definitely got some similarities.

the opening was off. Not sure of the culprit (possibly the artemisia) but about 30 minutes later and it is smooth and enjoyable. Hints of fir and leather lead to a fantastic woody landing with just a touch of tobacco. I also like the bottle. This may have to be added to my small but slowly growing collection.

While fragrances like Invictus and Azzaro Wanted stand fist pumping in the center of the dance floor, Dark Rebel sits in the darkest corner smoking cigarettes and sipping aged rum in his leather jacket. A masterpiece in my book, where boozy spiced rum meets leather and vanilla. I almost get some kind of fruity aspect blending in with everything. This will get some compliments, but it’s not for the faint of heart. If it’s not too hot outside and you’re wearing dark colors, you’ll definitely want to reach for this sensual and mysterious gem before your next night out. P.S. If you’re in love with this scent like me, try Tony Iommi Monkey Special by Xerjoff. It’s different, but gives the same vibes.

Jeremy fragrance said that this smells like the new Tom Ford Black Lacquer. I can see why.. the darkness and that soft-edginess is the same.

Dark boozy inky leather, smoldering in a subzero nordic wilderness. People saying "dude this is the most hardcore roughneck construction worker biker --i cant see myself wearing this???", people are literal wimps. This is nothing compared to how dark and twisted fragrances can get. This is a BETTER Bentley for Men Intense. Darker more purply bubbly booze, and the dry down works more youthfully and wonderfully while still slaying as dark and attractive. This fragrance would be for the creme de la creme of dark lovers who have class + masculinity in one. Just know how where when to apply and you’re golden.

Crazy how so many scents are there for $30 for years, and nobody really talks about them, and their ratings are low, and the second the price starts to get out of control everyone is there to sing the praises. This thing rocks, but the ratings have gone up with the price increase, and it just isn't warranted to pay $100+ for this. With that having been said, this is really good. If you can find it for $50, scoop it up, it's great at that price. It's not the same, but it fills a similar niche to Versace Oud Noir. Both are very nice, dark, woody, smokey fragrances that will excite the mature palate. All of the jabronis out there wearing Sauvage and Y, this will differentiate you from that crowd. Not as versatile, don't wear this in the summer, wear this is in the fall when it's cooler out. Wear this with like a black and white flannel or something like that, and people will know it's you, because this smells like something somebody with a black and white flannel, a black bomber jacket, or even a black sweater would wear. Doesn't need to be dressed up, but definitely doesn't smell like a guy wearing bright colors and shorts. You could wear this to the office, but I think 3 sprays is the max I'd go with for this. Performance is good on my skin, I get 6-8 hours longevity.
