Never understood the hate around this one, I have had a sample of it for a couple years now but recently got a 50ml bottle at Walmart on clearance for $15 and man this stuff is good!!. Don't fall into the tiktok hate surrounding this.
Ah, JOOP! If you grew up in the '90s, you knew someone who wore it. It was everywhere. It was up there with CK One on the shelf of "I'm at the age where I get a hard-on every 12 minutes". For many men, it's wrapped up in memories of first nights out, first girlfriends, and the era when aftershave was a part of your whole identity. When it comes to JOOP!, I've never wanted it to be a part of my identity. In fact, I wanted it far, far away from me. Ideally in another city. Even as a teenager, when sweet fragrances were hugely popular, I could never warm to JOOP!. It's not that I have an issue with sweetness, per se; it's more of an issue with this particular type of sweetness. While my friends were happily spraying themselves into a sugary cloud before heading out, I found myself reaching for fresher, cleaner fragrances like Polo Sport, Tommy, L'Eau d'Issey, and Acqua di Giò. To my nose, JOOP! has always smelt like someone mixed Malibu rum with the cheapest of cheap hair gel, then threw it into a candy floss machine. I know that sounds harsh, but it's genuinely the association I get every single time I smell it. There's an unmistakable sweetness that reminds me of coconut liqueur, backed by an artificial, almost synthetic sweets flavouring-like quality. Even after the opening settles, I continue to detect a synthetic edge that distracts me from everything else it's trying to do. That's not to say I don't understand why it became so popular. It's bold. It's confident. It's distinctive. It projects well (a little too well - it's borderline offensive), lasts for hours (or days...weeks even), and refuses to apologise for itself, even when it really should be on its knees begging for forgiveness. In an era when many fragrances played it safe, JOOP! was impossible to ignore; mainly because it's literally impossible to ignore. If sweet, powerful, unapologetically '90s fragrances are your thing, there's every chance you'll love it. It's essentially the male version (I use the term "male" very loosely) of some sort of strawberry/vanilla/burnt brown sugar concoction from Bath & Body Works that you can smell from half a mile away. And when I say "smell", I mean "literally taste it in the back of your nostrils". I completely respect what JOOP! achieved and the place it holds in fragrance history. It's simply never been a (happy) part of my personal history.
If you didn't get your nose on the original way back when You missed out on the most nuclear gormand WTF scent ever. I have an original series bottle 89-91 and a 96 ish edition by Lancaster. One is still a bit pink the other a dark blue purple hue. Whatever excuse for Joop Coty if peddling now is a weak imitation of something once great ...aka Muhamad Ali's last fight. That was the man that was once the Great Muhamad Ali in the ring for the $. Such is modern chemistry IFRA regulations and "dont make em like this no more"...and never will. This was Almairacs Greatest hit. Just the hate makes it a classic. It took me forever to wear this with confidence and I am glad my old bottles will stank me up oldschool until i drop dead. Never duplicated never imitated. Joop was and always will be King of Stank!!
Hated this stuff in the 90s. Hate in 2026. Never understood the hype behind this vile and putrid pink concoction.
Ah Joop…or Jizz as those around me, termed it, who didn’t share the love for this vanilla, patchouli, tobacco monster. This was so powerful and so ground breaking in a time of big hitters like Obsession, Egoiste, Beverley Hills and Jazz. This projected into a room or a club in the early 90s. Clothes would reek of this and cigarette smoke the following day. There was nothing subtle about this. And it takes me way back to being 20, and using a stupidly big scent to make my presence known. Kind of fell out of love with this and the other syrupy scents that followed - Le Male, A Men. I’m sure would still give some of today’s hyped, “beast mode” scents a good run, but I have no desire to rekindle my curiosity.
I tried to force my girlfriend to love this fragrance. It did not go well. She recoiled. Said it was way too feminine, too flamboyant — at one point she straight up called it "gay perfume." And I stood there defending it with everything I had: "this is what the playboys of the 2000s wore," "this is a legendary seducer scent," and so on. You know, fighting the good fight. Then I actually looked into it. Wolfgang Joop is openly gay, and the ad campaigns for this thing have always been dripping with lush, unapologetically homoerotic, beautifully androgynous imagery. Joop Homme didn't come out of the cigarette-and-soil, man's-man school of masculinity, it came out swinging against it. My girlfriend wasn't insulting it. She was reviewing it more accurately than I was. And honestly? That made me love it more. Because the juice matches the attitude. It doesn't smell like anything else and I still struggle to pin it down: a big loud vanilla, maybe some red fruit, maybe a whiff of tobacco, and powder, so much powder. If you forced me, I'd call it a barbershop that's been exaggerated, hyped up, pushed on stage under pink neon. A showman that refuses to be stopped. It's warm, restless, playful, flirty. It moves, it dances. It never once apologizes for itself. The best way I can describe wearing it: a handsome one-night stand that never compromises on who he is. You don't bring it home to meet your parents. I mean, that was never the plan anyway.
The composition is diverse, with notes of sweetness, bubblegum, and sandalwood. Too dated and tacky for me.
Recently found out this is pronounced Yoop! and not Joop! as I had previously believed, but they'll never stop me from pronouncing it Joop. There's nothing they can do.
Im telling you i did not expect this fragrance to be this good. I happened to get it as a gift and the first time my nose made contact with it i only strictly picked up one note which is dark sweet seductive cherries. I loved it a lot but the real magic began when i wore it for the first time, i was going to the gym and since its an edt i really did not respect the bottle and went heavy on the sprays next thing i get full on amazed by this beautiful cherry bubble surrounding me everywhere i go throughout the gym and i even got 3 compliments and 2 of them was from total strangers. I did not know this thing is literally beast mode in a good way you can almost never spray too much of it i might be exaggerating a little as a cherry lover. Layered it with cherry ink by Lorenzo Pazagglia and literally felt like a heavenly treatment for my nose for a good 8 hours amazing fragrance with beast performance and for the price its a must try at least if not a must have
Smells like if you puked in the bathroom in a 1990s frat party
The true classics always have my respect regardless of whether or not I care for them or, even though I like them, they disagree with my skin. I own some pretty well preserved Lancaster Joop! but the closest I can come to enjoying this classic is in the colorless version marked Deodorant Natural Spray; totally recognizable as Joop! but with the volume turned down a few clicks. I find it much more pleasant to wear, even in the heat of the Florida summer (still, use only one spray or you'll get that particular kind of attention which you never want).
ariel.cardona 05/24/26 18:14 I BET THAT I'M QUITE OLDER THAN YOU, AND I HAVEN'T MET ANY OLD PERSON WHO SMELLS LIKE JOOP! welp have fun dying first :-)
NyaBuwan 05/17/26 02:24 Smells like old people :p I BET THAT I'M QUITE OLDER THAN YOU, AND I HAVEN'T MET ANY OLD PERSON WHO SMELLS LIKE JOOP!
You've smelled Joop numerous times in your life I'd be willing to bet. You may not be aware of this but it's nearly impossible to have not encountered Joop with its popularity and years in market. You may love Joop as many people do, you also may hate Joop as many people claim to as well, and hopefully you are a sane and "normal" human being who doesn't hold strong opinions on perfumes... Either way, you've definitely smelled Joop. Over the past few years as fragrance has become an increasingly more mainstream and marketed part of life Joop had gained a very vocal group of haters. In regards to Joops detractors, especially of the TikToK brococoli haircut teenage variety, I'm not so sure they even know what they're hating. Hear me out, this is a demographic that worships at the altar of BR540, Althair, and last but certainly not least the JPG Le Male DNA. Strong, sweet, slightly synthetic "night club" fragrances so why the hate against Joop? Because the hive mind said so. It's that simple. If Joop was released today and was marketed correctly they'd eat it up. Think about it... A "beast mode" sweet but masculine purple monster of a fragrance. Rebottle it in something pharmaceutical looking, make some connection to "Sizzurp" and it's purple color and almost cough medicine sweet quality. It would be a best seller if you could walk that line of being accessible but not tacky. Anyways.... Joop is an incredibly strong fragrance with an almost instantly recognizable profile once you are familiar. I get an easy 18-24 hours of wear, easily lasting throughout the night if I don't happen shower before bed. Joop's DNA is a very comforting blend of both lightly spicy and powdery notes blended with a very sweet base. I definitely get the "cough medicine" quality that is so often mentioned but I honestly find it enjoyable. Of course in summer it would be suffocating but in the cold I find it to be comforting. I do see the similarities between Joop and the original Le Male, they are very different scents but very similar in concept and intention. So how did I come to own a bottle of Joop, why did I waste $20 on a unpopular fragrance that's older than me? Well, with all the hate online I naturally had to see what all the fuss was about. Luckily it wasn't disgust and hate that I experienced when I sniffed Joop for the first time, not at all, it was nostalgia. I have vivid memories of a specific Halloween when I was in elementary school where among all the costumes and candy I remember one of my teachers wearing a perfume that with an almost narcotic like quality etched itself into my memory. That fragrance was Joop! Trust me, I couldn't hand over my money fast enough. 4.2 OZ of Childhood Nostalgia, SOLD!! In the year of our Lord 2026 when exactly do I wear this blast from the past? On cold nights at home. Simple. It's an incredibly nostalgic and comforting scent for me. I instantly can transport myself back to a time where things were so much simpler. I've worn Joop around girlfriends and the reaction I've always got is "It smells familiar" and general appreciation although none have loved it. I simply do not have the gaul to wear Joop in public, while I do not think Joop deserves the hate it receives, I'm also not nearly extroverted enough of a person to wear such a loud fragrance in public. - 7/10 - Winter. Smells like old people :p
Performs extremely well, but smells like a cleaning product for a public toilet. Smells similar to the OG 9PM by Afnan.
Bold, daring, sickly sweet and also very comforting. My father - who sadly passed away in 2021 - used to wear this when I was a little kid. Don't overspray though, this stuff is strong as hell.
I am a lover of perfumery. Out of my collection of 66 something odd perfumes, I can't even count five that I genuinely dislike; and as badly as the fragrance community trashes Joop! Homme, I find no reason to abhor it. Quite the contrary, I can only find reason to love and praise it. And as a fragrance enthusiast, I fail to see how these so called fragrance conaseuirs within this community can refuse to give Joop! Homme the flowers it deserves. It's like some of y'all can't formulate your own opinions with your own noses, and just regurgitate the same tired clichés simply because it's hyper popular to hate on iconic perfumes. I am betting the only reason the community trashes this perfume is because the price point. Place this in a $400 niche bottle and you clowns would goon over this; oh wait, Creed already did that with Original Santal, and you posers do goon over it 🤦🏻 3.37 rating. Come on, get real. We are talking iconic perfumery, that has been on the shelves since 1989. Meanwhile you posers are praising fragrances that have been discontinued after 5 years of production because they couldn't gain any traction. We are talking about groundbreaking perfumery that paved the way for perfumes like Le Male, Reflection Man, Naxos, Eros, A*Men Pure Havane Mugler, Original Santal, Gucci Guilty Elixir, Pegasus, One Million, etc., You posers have to be challenged to hate on the OG yet praise the numerous copies. And you clowns do this with all the iconic perfumes that have reached God-tier popularity. Y'all do this with Sauvage and Eros and One million and the list goes on and on and on. You posers love to hate, and I don't consider y'all fragrance conaseuirs. If you can't respect the path finding classics, then you aren't really enthusiastic about fragrances. If you can't appreciate the groundbreaking perfumes that created evolutionary trends within fragrances, then you have 0 respect for this artistry and 0 respect for the talented artists that have graced us with the luxury of being able to smell good. Just a bunch of haters and posers
I love this!! I love when my husband puts it on, it smells so good to me. I just bought him another bottle because I love smelling it. It’s not for everyone & that’s fine but as a woman, I can say it smells amazing.
Anyone who tells you that this is a panty dropper is 50 years old and clinging to nostalgia.
This is a victim of its own success. Being so cheap and readily available kills it. If it had a $500 price tag people would froth over it. Very potent performance
its really unique, a strange medicinal like sweetness with a kick of spice. reviewing this because these yeezy slides I bought smell exactly like joop.
Loverman85 got this one right. Sweet synthetic overload, harshness, bomb. Cloying, headache inducing, chemical brain damage is what this pitiful juice will give you. This fragrance should be banned. It's just terrible, not bad smelling, just pointless and silly and lame. It's like jumping into a pool of granulated sugar being suffocated with and or water boarded with Artificial Cherries, and cinnamon. Who the heck is wearing this?
The sweetness in this reminds me a lot of the Original Le Male by Jean Paul Gautier, like that tonka floral scent. It is quite sweet, as most people have said, it has that really sweet, fake sugar smell to it, overall it smells really good, but I just wish joop fragrances would stop with that fake really sweet vanilla, if they changed the vanilla they use it would be SOOO much better, but I do enjoy this scent as a women, I could see how women find this sexy, I really like it, the more it dries down it really smells like Le Male on me, which is strange, not as much lavender or other notes like in Le Male but it smells very similar! Edit: I let it dry down way more, and it smells very much like medicine on my skin, I wish the opening was what the dry down smelled like but I just don't think it works with my skin
A 90s classic and still relevant. I can discern no real difference between the first bottle I purchased in 1994 and the most recent bottle I bought a few months ago. This sublime fragrance smells exactly as it always has - challenging, distinctive, invasive and provocative. Longevity and sillage is still nuclear. It's not for everyone - it will completely overwhelm snowflakes, hipsters and the wokerati. They can stick to their generic, unisex, overpriced, niche but instantly forgettable fragrances - this is for individuals who eschew labels and ignore trends. Be an individual. Be brave. Let Joop Homme challenge you and then let it choose you. Compliments will follow.
This is chemical warfare in a bottle and a assault on the senses. Dated and synthetic and I admit I have been guilty in the past in high school decades ago of having it when I didn't know any better. It's so cloying and nuasatic and shocked why anyone would still wear this when we got tons of better options in the same price range. This needs to go to perfume jail or death row. ☠️ 😂
I also tried Joop Homme. It’s a bit heavy, but it really reflects the vibe of its era. Even the pink bottle says a lot about how bold and unapologetic the scent is. Since Joop is a German designer brand, it somehow made me imagine Berlin nightclubs I’ve never even been to. There’s something very atmospheric about it. The sharpness in the opening slowly fades into a much softer drydown, which I actually enjoyed a lot. It feels like a night that starts with alcohol and dancing, and ends in clean sheets with that soft fabric softener smell. Definitely old-school and not something everyone will appreciate, but I’d still like to have it in my collection.
I've heard that it's not as strong as it used to be. Is that because of reformulations or batch variations? Even in the comments, people are saying it feels weaker or not like it was before.
I got this from Walmart for $38. Completely a blind buy, what a regret. I decided to try it based on the comments here. This is a headache in a bottle. For some reason, it reminds me of a sweet version of Lapidus. I tested it on my skin and clothes, and it doesn’t last long as people say. The sillage is okay. I find this scent like a fart from someone trying creatine for the first time. Really strong when you smell it and explodes, but that offensive smell vanishes quickly. I don’t know why someone likes this fragrance. It’s not pleasant at all to me. The taste is like butts; everyone has their own. I have mine, and this is definitely not for me; it could not be for you if you’re considering a blind buy.
At some point in every man’s life, owning this bottle seems almost inevitable. Headache in a bottle! It’s way too strong and downright unpleasant. If someone gifted me this as an adult, I’d honestly think they hated me.
