Bois d'Iris

For those wondering if Bois d'Iris has been discontinued, this is what the Van Cleef & Arpels customer service emailed me today (8/5/26): "I can certainly understand your interest in our lovely Bois D'Iris fragrance. This is such a distinctive fragrance with its floral and smoky notes. This fragrance has not been discontinued, however, it is unavailable at the moment." I'm so happy it hasn't been discontinued! Used bottles on online marketplaces have been listed at ridiculous prices lately, some as high as $500, so I wanted to share this information with anyone who has been considering purchasing it. Hopefully Bois d'Iris becomes available again soon, as I've been wanting a bottle myself.

This is definitely a second skin fragrance maybe even third skin, it's subtle and sits very close, like it doesn't want you to know it's there. Perfect for people who aren't fans of projection and want to have a subtle extra scent to their skin, perhaps for intimate moments. Otherwise, a bit salty and buttery.

Worst iris ive tested, mightve gone bad

This smells like a beach after an autumn rain.For me is just beautiful, both warm and fresh/airy.

Hard to explain why, but Bois d'Iris simply smells..sad. Oddly melancholic, it makes me feel nostalgic and puts a cloud over my day, not sure why, because I usually love iris-based scents, including Prada Infusion d'Iris, DHI, Fleur de Peau, but they don't make me feel sad, yet this one does. Maybe it's the salted, marine aspect of it, can't put my finger on it. It's a shame, because it's a beautiful scent, but I hardly reach for it, I look for uplifting scents that lift my mood.

a Beautiful addition to my collection, one of my fav old goodies...I should say it is a seasonal perfume that can only preform in a certain climates...I love it even if it does not give me that explosive iris performance I desired...Over all 8/10

It smells like the air in an outdoor historic museum. Woodfires, pine buildings, soot and iron, and old cotton sheets and linens. Fresh, clean, airy- but aged and earthy, too. Take all that and combine it with a sugary orris note, to have it leaning feminine. It's an incredibly refined and beautiful fragrance, with so much depth. I wish it had a little more sillage, and I am not the biggest fun of sugary notes, but it's a beautiful enough scent that I would still say I love it. Cold, crisp, smoky, aged, weathered, with a flash of sugary violet and iris to add intrigue. It's the color of ash, or beige. Refined and calm, but not boring.

Re-testing on a warm May morning and really loving it this time. I had previously tried this in the cool winter/ spring transition when I was craving iris and thought it was just ok. The heat of my skin in the sun really makes a difference.

On skin, it opens with a distinct resinous, metallic hum, likely the result of high-quality ambergris meeting a sun-bleached driftwood accord. There is a faintly herbal quality here, a ghostly whisper of frankincense or myrrh that adds an intellectual, almost "ancient" edge to the composition. Unlike the "lipsticky" or "cosmetic" iris found in other high-end lines, this is a dry, mineral iris. It captures the scent of a luxury cashmere sweater worn on a misty, salt-sprayed coastline. It feels like "quiet luxury" in a bottle—sophisticated, professional, and intimate. However, the scent seems to be reaching for an elusive depth that is nowhere to be found. It is a "hollow" masterpiece; it lacks a grounding anchor to tether its airy, shimmering notes. As it wears, one can’t help but feel that a faint touch of patchouli or sandalwood would have been the perfect bridge to turn this watercolor sketch into a rich oil painting. It remains a beautiful, "ghostly" fragrance for those who appreciate transparency and a clean, stone-like chill, but those seeking a landing in the base may find themselves wanting to layer it with something more grounded. Bois d’Iris is one of the most refined and understated fragrances I’ve had in my collection. From the first spray, it comes across soft, smooth, and effortlessly elegant. The iris here is not overly powdery or cosmetic, instead, it feels woody and airy, blending seamlessly with cedar and clean musks. What stands out most is the texture. There are no sharp edges, no loud transitions, just a continuous, polished scent that feels natural on the skin. It doesn’t try to impress, yet it keeps drawing you back in. As it dries down, it becomes even more comforting. The woods soften, the iris stays present, and everything settles into a clean, slightly warm skin scent that is incredibly easy to wear. This is the kind of fragrance you reach for without thinking. It works in any setting and never feels out of place. Quiet, refined, and perfectly balanced. A year ago I was looking for something "warm, sandy, soft, beige.." and I got many good suggestions. I want to give my warmest thanks to @nomen who said Bois D'Iris is the thing. I ended up buying it and what I can say is that I have several perfumes that I truly love, but this one is the best. One of the best smelling perfume I've had. It's elegant and quietly luxurious. Soft, sandy, warm and beige. I was lucky to find the 100 ml bottle on discount.

Hazy, earthy iris. Seems like something I'd really enjoy, if I could smell it at all two minutes after applying...

I like it a lot, but very light. For me, it’s iris and black pepper. Very pretty, but too subtle and too similar to other fragrances I have in my collection. If you don’t like strong scents and you want something with a lot of class that not everyone is wearing, this is definitely worth a try.

As others have said, this wears light. Similar DNA to Orchidee Vanille, but more dry. A pleasant, powdery and feminine fragrance but fleeting. Doesn't offend but doesn't wow me either.

Sexy Dr. Pepper. The expectations you have of your perfume will determine if this is a love or a flop. If you like your fragrances to be beast mode, this is NOT for you. If you like alluring understated skin scents that are going to stick with you and be perceived by those who are within arms reach, this is perfect! Very clean and office-friendly. My experience of this fragrance is by and large a sparkling rooty Dr. Pepper-like Iris that remains quite linear throughout the wear. It smells yummy, sexy, soft, and sophisticated. Super cozy. The Iris is perfect, not too vegetal and not too powdery, not too mature. Ultimate office scent for me!

Bois d’Iris sounded promising but turned out dull and lifeless. The iris feels powdery and sterile, with a faint woody soapiness that disappears too quickly. No depth, no warmth, just a bland whisper of a scent. For the price, it’s seriously disappointing.

opens with hay, powdery, sliiiightly spicy candy, grandma smell. plus randomly... old dried urine?- but not in an ammoniac way. some time later it becomes a sweet warm vanilla essence. unfortunately for me it's just too quiet.

An earthy iris. It starts with a chalky iris and then becomes peppery, musty and woody. I would have thought that there is a blend of oakmoss and cedarwood in this but these notes are not listed by the brand so maybe I'm just confused by the association of violet and vetiver. The iris in this fragrance is slightly floral, a little bit powdery, but mostly luminous, twinkling even. This one is not for me, even though I usually love iris fragrances, because the vetiver stands out too much on my skin.

I bought it bc my mother in law decided to steal Bois d'argent from me. It's more sugary, more of a warm iris. The problem is you need to put it on your clothes or it will dry and smell like you did not put any perfume on you after a few hours. It's a nice perfume, it does smell good but I don't think I'll buy it again after, as I have to layer it with other perfumes for it to stays on. It's woody and easy to wear, really pleasant.

Dry powdery iris, a bit dirty from salt and ambergris, with vetiver. A bit of garbage can somewhere in there. Alien and abstract. Not very appealing as perfume unless you're into shock and awe. Just ok.

I should love this from then notes and the house but I just don’t. No powder, no iris, no violet - just dusty, lightly woody and pink pepper. Has that “cardboard” smell I get from Glossier You. Sigh.

This perfume is soooooooo weak. I was sent it along with 5 other bonus testers when I bought a sample of Iris Cendre from fragrance vault. It was the only sampler where I had to apply 5x the amount to test it, and I still could barely smell it, especially compared to the other irises. I have a very sensitive nose, so it's safe to say this perfume is very light. If the bottle was beautiful and if it was on sale, I might buy it, but I think the bottle is boring, and tacky (brand name in ugly font, boring charm tied on by plastic cordage) plus it's expensive! The smell itself is hardly there!

all i smell is dry-ish ambery woods. nice. but... no iris.

Starchy, woody, crackly-sparkly, iodine-like, balsamic, dusky, powdery iris. Yes, all of that. Shimmery, even. I love this one. Undergirded by a waxy-sweet lipstick smell, but the soft-focus woods dominate in the most pleasant way.

Absolutely beautiful fragrance. To me, it's a woody scent first and foremost, with the iris serving as an accessory to the vetiver. It's marketed as a woman's perfume, but I wear it as a man with no issues. Probably my favourite VC&A fragrance alongside Bois Doré, but has the same issue that many VC&A fragrances have; awful performance. I have to spray 6 sprays to match the performance of what most EDPs give me in 2. The lightness of the fragrance isn't all bad, however, as it allows it to be easily used in the summer without being overly heavy or cloying.

I really enjoy the powdery dryness. Reminds me of Dyptiques Orpheon but with iris instead of juniper. It stays linear and close to the skin projecting a good 4". Suits it's purpose perfectly

Opens salty, becomes a papery and lightly smoky iris, gets earthier as it dries down on my skin, there's a nice peppery and musky backdrop too. Perfect for warm weather, but you can wear this year round. Low projection and sillage, needs to be reapplied for it to last all day.

Ah, Bois d'Iris... I had a love affair with this one initially, then broke up with it and sold it away, only to return to it years later with a greater appreciation for what I had and lost. Now it's one of my all-time favorites, kind of a soulmate. I haven't tried all the iris perfumes out there, but I've tried the main ones. This one just hits on all the right levels for me. I think its main strength is that it's not trying too hard. It's lipsticky and semi-sweet, slightly woody. Doesn't scream, but doesn't whisper, either. It speaks normally and clearly, mainly about the romance of the iris aroma, which is classic and timeless. I got rid of this very early on because I felt it was an underachiever. I came back to it because I realized it was just a kind of understatement I wasn't able to appreciate at the time. Classic and timeless, understated and sophisticated, just as much as it needs to be, and an absolutely perfect companion to any sort of activity. I can vouch for it as an accompaniment to great films, for instance. Unisex, all weather, day or night, a perfect companion, and a great perfume.

Unacceptably weak! One can't say a bad thing about the scent itself (when you're able to smell it), but the notes included are very light and there is nothing to support them. Iris is powdery and weak, ambergris is not too detectable, you can feel the dryness of the vetiver (which does not help the powederiness), and need I say anything about "salt", especially as the sole opening note!? The first minute of spraying is neat, but then it becomes like the smell of paper/books.
