Overture Man

I simply can't stand the cumin note. The opening is nauseating and the dry down is even more nauseating. Just terrible and unwearable.

This is a very complex and not easy fragrance to use. The cognac and cinnamon notes are prominent, and while it's beautiful, I expect those who live in very cold climates will be most drawn to it. I would advise anyone who has tried it and found it difficult to use this process apply this fragrance to your clothes before going to work, a party, or any other occasion, at least two hours beforehand. Then put them on, and you will be satisfied with the result. It is most appealing when it settles, and you will receive a lot of compliment from people. 8/10

Continuing my search for an Amouage fragrance to add to my collection, another that I have heard good things about is Overture Man. Talking with various scent aficionados, one point that often comes up is that Amouage openings can be challenging. Here, with Overture Man, just as with Enclave, I was initially not hugely impressed. For the first few seconds, Overture Man came across to me like furniture polish. Alarmingly, it did not improve during the initial dry-down stages either, when I got a combination of overly ripe cheese and hints of farmyard. This somewhat dirty, animalic aspect is most definitely evident to me, but perhaps surprisingly, it is not particularly offensive, at least not from a distance. What is surprising is that when I spray Overture Man on my skin, I do not detect any of the stated cognac note, yet it is clearly there when I smell the atomiser, and quite beautiful too. Like Enclave, however, the experience improves markedly after about 30 minutes on my skin. From this point onwards, it develops a depth and complexity that are rarely found. Its quality begins to shine through in the way it coats the skin and clings to it. There are many stated notes in the composition that I do not detect at all, or perhaps I simply do not recognise them. In the early stages of its development, cumin stands out, as do benzoin and patchouli. Later, I find incense and rich leather, all bound together in a smoky accord. That animalic note I mentioned experiencing in the opening remains too, giving the scent a sensual underpinning. In the latter stages, there is also a minty quality to the composition that is not listed as a note. I'm already realising that Amouage fragrances often require some persistence before revealing their rewards. Overture Man, to me, seems best suited to cooler temperatures, and it lasts eight hours or more on my skin. Tested: 1 ml decant Seasons / occasions: Most suitable for autumn and winter. This one is unfortunate, I had sky high expectations for it but it just doesn't work for me. I don't get booze, I don't get winter spices, all I smell is Interlude with oregano swapped out for cumin, which I can't stand.

One of my most complex scents for sure, super smooth & spicy. This will definitely continue growing on me. Not crazy difficult to pull off, but not easy Such a masterpiece

Curtains drawn. The glasses are still half full. Smoke hangs in the room because no one bothered opening a window after the last guest left. Overture Man begins there, already in progress, as though you arrived late to something important and no one intends to explain what you've missed. The cognac carries warmth without celebration. Spice follows immediately, not arranged into neat layers but pressing together until individual notes stop introducing themselves. Cardamom dissolves into saffron. Cumin flickers at the edge of perception. Ginger catches light for a moment, then disappears beneath darker things. Nothing reaches for attention because everything already has it. The heart is built from resins that feel less fragrant than physical. Thick. Glossy. Ancient. Labdanum and myrrh seem to coat the air instead of passing through it, while benzoin lends just enough sweetness to remind you this composition has not forgotten pleasure. It has simply chosen a slower, heavier version of it. Leather arrives carrying traces of smoke and worn wood rather than polished luxury. The animalic facets remain restrained but essential. Without them the fragrance would become beautiful. With them it becomes believable. There is no dramatic transformation waiting in the drydown. The fragrance settles deeper into itself, each hour stripping away brightness without sacrificing character. What remains feels inevitable, as though this was always the destination and everything before it merely cleared the path. Many fragrances perform. Overture Man occupies. It fills empty space with the quiet confidence of something that has no interest in being understood quickly. Some compositions invite admiration. This one asks for patience. They are not the same thing. If you're looking for a fragrance that challenges your expectations and rewards repeated wear, Overture Man is one worth diving into.

When people say niche this is what I think of. It's a masterpiece too, a niche masterpiece. It smells like memories past and those yet to come. Classy, a little challenging, and character-defining unique. Ironically for being named Overture, it reminds me of when I started to learn how to play the piano. That specific Chickering & Sons baby grand. 10/10

I fondly remember the way I looked at Overture Man when it was out of reach for me. Back when I was just entering the niche game, I'd often see Overture Man mentioned as one of Amouage's best fragrances and a true staple in perfumery, thing that of course, made me look at it with a quiet reverence; like both a must-try base niche fragrance and sort of a "final boss". Time passed since then, I finally got a sample of Overture Man, I gave it a good couple of tests and spent plenty of time with it, and along with my maturation in the hobby, I realized there's far bigger bosses out there left to beat. That's to say, Overture Man is not exactly a challenging scent, but it's not mass-appealing either. It requires some time, both for it to fully develop and for you along with it so that you can learn to truly appreciate it. But arguably the most striking part of Amouage's heavy-hitter here is, as depicted, its overture. And this overture immediately brings a word to my mind: just "raw". The raw beauty of a blast of grapefruit - not uplifting or overly bright - intertwining with a hefty dosage of spices. The cumin in particular stands out, striking as slightly bitter and earthy, and ultimately adding a sweaty undertone that follows up until the end. It holds hands with a warm, sharp ginger kick that also aids with a faint citric aspect. Meanwhile, the cardamom and nutmeg are responsible for offering the rich blend of peppery, herbal spiciness whilst settling over saffron that's all about dry, bittersweet accents, with no rubbery anecdotes. All of these make Overture Man strike as a very rugged, almost angry scent. But things take a turn... As the symphony picks up pace, Overture Man introduces sweetness, first and foremost under a boozy cognac note, which portrays aromas of dried fruits and subtle woodiness. Then there's the cinnamon, which fear not, Karine didn't go overboard with. Its lightly dusty, sweet spice is nicely balanced with the resinous heart of the composition, showing a wide array of balsamic warmth and gentle vanillic amber. The myrrh keeps things interesting by making sure that specific bittersweet construction does not become sweet first, bitter second. There's kind of a honeyed richness that the myrrh brings, which is sublime once you notice it. And an earthy nuance is definitely present too, likely from the patchouli. Certainly, Amouage is known for the usage of frankincense, and Overture Man does not miss out on it, but it also doesn't quite get a solo section. It massively helps the composition with a smoky accent, but also with piney and rosemary-like attributes. These are not very prominent, but they're not invisible either. As things begin to conclude, Karine adds a coda to her symphony with heavy-handed musks pitted against leather warmth with a particular woodiness right next to it that also gains a creamy undertone. I know it sounds like a lot, and there is plenty going on here, but it all comes together so gracefully, like an orchestra in perfect symphony, that nothing feels misplaced, nor nothing feels missing. Thankfully, my rather pretentious skin agreed just fine with Overture Man, not only stretching its longevity past 12 hours, but also granting me plenty of projection and sillage. The first 3 hours, it would simply be impossible for me to not constantly smell it around, which also applied for any lucky passer-by in a 2 meter radius. Unfortunately, not everything lasts forever, as Overture Man would start gentling down (but still pushing), reaching a skin scent somewhere around hour 6-7. Many people will find Overture Man hard to wear. Comparisons with "unwashed crotch" or simply to sweat are not unfamiliar or unheard of in regard to Overture Man. Even my dad pointed that out when he first smelled it on me, to which I responded with "Thank you." In all honesty, Overture Man can do as a daily for some people, but personally, I prefer to tie it with a suit for more distinct events. And to take it one level further, you can layer it with Xerjoff's Luxor (not my idea/discovery) and begin ascending as the chorus plays in the back. Overture Man is truly remarkable. It is without doubt one of Amouage's finest pieces of their catalogue and one of Karine Vinchon-Spehner's finest pieces of perfumery. It carries depth, character, opulence, quality, complexity, and mastery in a perfectly synchronized fashion, which makes it the first Amouage to earn a 10/10 from my part. A bottle of Overture Man asks for no pocket money, however - up to nearly €400, with certain discounters and lucky offers popping up closer around €250-€300, but never under €200. Is it worth the money? I'd arguably say yes, both to someone who truly loves it and to collectors. Ultimately, I can speak as much as I want here; the only way to find out is by smelling it, and I encourage you to do so, with patience. this stuff is an adventure, super unique scent, super unique bottle, everything about this is just innovative and challenging in the best way possible. but for me it was love at first sniff, the boozy- animalic - begamot - cumin accord was captivating for me from minute 1.

Easily the most unique bottle I own. I was hooked instantly and was only hesitant because of the price. Truly a masterpiece and designed to stick out in a crowd. Only fragrance I have ever had last a full 24 hours and be instantly recognizable on skin. Insane projection and performance which has set the bar for me. When you spend this kind of money on a fragrance you truly enjoy the performance of the scent should match the price tag. Will purchase again whenever I run out.

Revisiting this fragrance. I ought to start by saying both the bottle, juice colour & box this comes in are amazing and really stands out; very well done on the presentation of this fragrance, Amouage. From the opening, you get a very realistic cognac scent, spices & a slight freshness. The base & heart notes are already coming through in full force as well—the animalic notes, very smoky, resinous & leathery. This is a really polarising scent, & for some reason women in particular in my experience really do not like it. The performance for the batch I have is decent, all things considered. I think it's actually a good thing this fragrance isn't too strong, for the aforementioned reasons. The dry down is much smoother compared to the opening, though. Overall, a very respectable fragrance but not one I think I can rate a 9 or higher, although I am tempted to considering how lovely the presentation is. The fact this is not a very mass-appealing scent also makes it more special to me, as it's certainly unique. 8.5/10

Why did companies stop producing perfumes like Overture Man? This is, at least in my opinion, the epitome of a Winter perfume. The spices are very jolly and festive. There is nutmeg and cumin and cinnamon. The spice combination almost smells like Christmas cookies being baked in the oven as you’re cuddled up inside by the fire. Then there are animal notes as well. It keeps this from being too sweet, playful, and youthful. The animal notes in here are very similar to the animal note in orto parisi Cuoium. There is also a sweet and boozy cognac note, which adds more to the festive feeling. A lot of people say that Overture is too artistic, too unwearable, or too abstract. I disagree. Overture is undoubtedly complex and objectively difficult to pull off to the average person, but this is a real treat for anyone that is into niche perfumery. Thank you Amouage.

I still have an old official "Made in Oman" sample. The scent is a heavy hitter. People always leave comments like "You have to be masculine, 30+ years old etc. under the most normal designer type fragrances, but for Overture you really have to be a certain type of man, otherwise the scent will wear you!

Overture man!!! you either love or its not for you. Real Big Man scent. Im with the love group, so different, so commanding. This is one of those fragrances; as is alot of Amouage fragrances, that demands a responses. It feels so mysterious on me. 🔥

I've recently discovered Amouage and bought 10, 10ml samples and this is my least favourite. I'll continue to wear hoping that it grows on me but it's not looking good. Royal tobacco, interlude, interlude Black iris and Purpose 50 just Wow!

Lovely fragrance. Not for everyone. One thing is for sure, open air & winter only!

Overture Man is probably my favorite fragrance of all time. Sadly, after testing three different bottles, I have to conclude that it simply does not perform on me, skin or clothes.

This one has a great dry down, the opening is good, unlike anything out there but not strong enough for my taste or unique enough. There are dupes of this one that are very close, making this one not as special as it could be like Royal Tobacco which has zero dupes that smell as good or even close to the Original. I have received many compliments with this one, but for me the smell has become boring so is not one of my cherished "Holy Grail" fragrances that I believe will stand the test of time and be considered the greatest ones ever made.

This is something special, a little dirty and raw. It has a personality that instead of head turning "wow you smell nice" you get a more " wow... Wait... Whhhat is thaaat" type of reaction, and 50/50 if people like it after that reaction. It is for trained noses and not for the general public. I do enjoy it alot and has a wow factor.

Opening is one that I will not forget - and not in a good way. Hard pass.

The cumin is a bit noisy, but the myrrh/benzoin is smooth and sweetened, not bad but not that good either, I have exactly picked up similar opening notes on Stéphane Humbert Lucas 777 - O'Hira, but I'd prefer this over O'hira as it has no olibanum, is much more smoother, has projection and sillage. Edit: compared to majority Amouage's men's section this is on Top of my list, which is lowkey sad because I had high expectations for other bottles within the house of Amouage.

i love this but honestly the preformance is not that massive on me, and i'm talking an older bottle

It’s got that spicy, earthy, slightly boozy thing going on, and the animalic and incense notes make it stand out. Feels mature, complex and well-made. It is very heavy and spicy with a lot of cumin and leather, so it's definitely a scent that not everyone will like though. Dark, mature and introspective. Feels like it belongs to some older guy with a secretive, underground lifestyle, sitting alone in his house with his worn out leather jacket, getting drunk on cognac and being surrounded by expensive things, silence and shadows of the past. Film noir vibes! 8/10

Warm,boozy,rich fragrance

One of the best from Amouage Top 5 Makes me think of Indiana Jones, going on a great adventure. The transitions that this fragrance goes through is incredible. So beautifully complex, not linear at all, can turn your day into a really magical one. Probably addicting for some, very very good smelling scent. I have moved on but this one is really great. Looking into more Rare and/or Niche Frags I haven't tried before. Some good houses to explore: Argos, Maison Crivelli, Roja Dove, Creed, MFK, Zoologist, Penhaligons, City Rhythm, YSL private line, Guerlain, Byredo, Boadicea The Victorious, Sospiro, Goldfield and Banks, Imperial Valley, BornToStandOut, Marlou, Pernoire, & Frederic Mall Animal notes are listed but you do not smell any of them. Just a great luxurious blend of the most highest quality ingredients that amouage is known for. Smell 10/10 Projection 10/10 10-20 Feet in the right setting and proper sprays Long lasting 10/10 Addicting 8/10 Compliments 10/10 Smells like nothing else out there, One of the best one for compliments from Amouage along with Epic Man
