It kind of reminds me of the lumber section at Home Depot or Lowe's. Mostly just a lot of black pepper and the birch note to my nose.
Photorealistic black pepper and incense. It’s intoxicating.
It smells like birch tar. A smoky, wood-smoked aroma. No sweetness. 9/10
I like a lot about this scent. It’s a thick white cloud of incense that goes on kinda heavy and persists on skin all day. Not a projection monster but the scent cloud is arms reach for hours. For an incense this one is lovely though it’s a bit sweet for me. Some interesting notes mixed in, notably black licorice which I really enjoyed. There is a top note of nutmeg though that, once I smelled it, could no longer ignore. I think it works with the scent but I just didn’t like it, could only think of moms egg custard with nutmeg on top, that ruined it for me just before I had almost bought a full bottle. Quality stuff though for sure and a fair price.
smoke bomb, really interesting, I generally don't like fragrances that are too smoky, but for some reason this one works for me, same with the licorice, I hate candy licorice like haribo rotellas, but I love real licorice, chewing on licorice sticks, ricard pastis, cachou lajaunie, and the licorice note in this is very much in that direction, woody, spicy, peppery, and I also get cumin, this fragrance is like a contradiction to me that I end up liking it, super mature, adult, industrial, masculine leaning but still usable unisex, the sillage is also shockingly not overpowering, from a fragrance like this you'd expect it to just hit you in the face, but no, it's pretty moderate what's funny is that on a blotter this smells more accurate to a church/cathedral than the whole series 3 incense lineup, which is pretty ironic, but not at all on skin my only issue is that I have no idea what occasion I would actually wear this despite liking it, it's a hard one to daily but I wonder if layering it could fix that wearability issue that I have with it, I still feel like it misses a bit of sweetness, so maybe layering it with a gourmand vanilla could be interesting
Scorched my eyebrows off (complimentary)
I love perfumes that are as much an experience as a scent and I was excited to try this one. Bought myself a bottle for my birthday, but on re-reading the description knew I’d have a fight for it in my house. My husband did indeed fall head over heels and declared it his perfume grail - smoky, dark, slightly astringent and the cedar note is realistic. I handed it over, at least I still get to enjoy it! Absolutely beautiful scent but was slightly disappointed as I don’t get the industrial edge to it that some describe; it’s a straightforward, dry and comforting woodsy smell of bonfires and sap with zero sweetness. The resinous notes make it lean slightly masc-coded to me but it’s completely wearable for anyone. I’ll be making sure to keep this one on our shelves.
This is to Tresor what Sadonaso is to Berghain.

Black would be fire with less or no licorice at all. Still good for me
Overall this is a very intriguing fragrance, and even though theres things i wish comme would fix- i feel like this gets worse the more it dries down, and find the on skin experience to become too amorphous and synthetic-this has still become an instant full bottle love for me The first thing i noticed upon spraying was how well crafted this felt, comme is known for their use of synthetics but the character of this fragrance and the level of aromatics is made to feel like it hits you in a completely natural way as opposed to making you smell like someone who is doused in perfume. I instantly get deep sharp pepper, simple woods (best iteration of the sawdusty accord ive ever encountered) and the right level of spice ive been looking for- imo this is not the niche bomb on arrival people allude it to be at all- i could see the initial strong hit of pepper being too much for some people, but personally i tend to like fairly palatable and widely agreeable fragrances and this decently fits that bill in my eyes, the only left field aspect is the vinyl-like quality it has and it blends into everything in a pretty nice way to my nose. My interest in fragrance as an art form is not to smell “sexy”- i know it is for some people, however imo this is a hunky lumberjack manly musk type of smell (much more than fragrances that actually try to brand themselves that way like duro or bentley for men) it also has slight aftershave tones to it that add to that appeal as well. Ofcourse anyone can wear this and try to pull it off but i dont consider it unisex. The more it dries down the vinyl note morphs into more of a tar like character that is present in a lot of realistic darker wood fragrances like hwyl- but it does not actually feel that tar like or industrial at first. That is until it dries and blends into something more nebulous, here it actually does have more of a dry chalky concrete tone that also creates an impressionistic presentation of a licorice smell if that makes sense- because it doesnt actually smell like theres a true or prominent licorice note in here, but it does have a licorice-like character. I get slight bbq spices but in a way i like- not gourmand at all again just reminiscent of a manly musk. theres something fresh and slightly cool that keeps me from seeing the smoky descriptor others are using for this, but its not a stretch for that concrete-y quality to be construed as ashy- it still doesnt immediately strike me as smoky though, i have to search for it for that to make sense to me I Really disagree w other reviewers bc i actually think this starts out like an excellently done but more generic mens smell (albeit yes a very strong pepper note right up front that could be too abrasive for some)- similar to serge lutens poivre noir pepper note mixed with hala by lataffah- so many scents are described as peppery wood but never actually smell like that, this is actually straightforward in being exactly what i imagine that to smell like- and then as it dries down it becomes more of a niche affair to me, more industrial and more nebulous, but still good and not like a crazy difference from the beginning to end w this evolution of the scent or anything. The peppery character is very prominent in the beginning, and sort of manages to stay as a main player into the drydown just not as sharp- however at times it felt like that peppery aspect would dip out more and it would off balance the composition to me and would then come across a little too like some niche industrial affair (ofcourse this can take different forms depending on the fabric its sprayed on, like any fragrance so keep that in mind). The pepper and the effervescent quality of the first leg of the wear of black is truly necessary to bring this all together right and it does disappear into the far drydown and leaves you with an odd industrial musk after a while or a very synthetic smell left on your clothes, and i dont like that stage. It also has a truly slight amount of sweetness that is just right, i dont even know that i would call it a sweetness but more like a smoothening element in this mix than something that actually smells “sweet.” On skin: same opening but i find that pepper dissipates more quickly, and as i said thats a problem for me bc i think it throws the whole composition off balance. The effervescent opening doesnt work right on skin for me. At times i think it smells maybe just odd and industrial but not bad and then at other times It still smells like a sophisticated and still appealing dark thing that takes a slightly licoricey character (but again doesnt actually smell like licorice for anyone worried about that). It does have a slightly aftershavey smell which i think id usually mind but here i actually feel like is done just right and again i think is alluring. Everyones different but I dont think most people actually like when men smell blatantly like cologne, but this gives off that “hint of aftershave” musk that i think is attractive- if this was doused up too much in the mix i would find it synthetic and obnoxious but again i think its actually done just right. Edit: Over time this on skin experience does start to gain too much of a synthetic inflection i do not love. After a while it ends up just being a strange amorphous industrial musk, not unlike that of something like ganymede (which im personally not fond of). The far drydown isnt awful, its just odd and synthetic imo In summary its a big mixed bag for me, and really i usually consider my experience of the drydown as more of a make or break factor than the opening, but those opening stages are just so damn good and right up my alley that i will overlook its shortcomings
Opens cinnamony with a pepper bias, but then it fades into a spicy kind of wood, cinnamon leaning but more like licorice, in which it’s supported by the Pepperwood™ and a faint birch. The woodsy elements here are elevated by the cedar and the subtle vetiver. Not really a trace of leather in here (which is the premise of me sampling this), but it’s definitely more bearable than Vegan Leather Jacket by Lush. It definitely is reminiscent of Black Lacquer by Tom Ford, but albeit in a more aromatic bias. A bit over time, the cedar overtakes the licorice+birch facets just a bit more. In any regards, no dice here for me since I’m not a fan of pure spice fragrances.
This smells really off-putting…basically smells like some punk rocker with black leather clothes and rhinestones…maybe a Mohawk and black combat boots…smells like they’ve been chain smoking cigarettes, but covered the smell with some odd headshop product…needless to say, not the aesthetic I’m going for…
My wife said I smell like a funeral home. I always drew a tiny comparison to a brand new tar parking lot or roof. However, it's more peppery spicy incense and cedar. I feel like its not super strong for those notes or I could be nose blind to it. It's aight. For special days.
@Otingocni: I was deeply ashamed for you, having read your mysagonistic comment. now let me get your tiny d*ck facts straight: dating is harder for many men now. women’s economic independence raises partner standards; fewer men meet them, which can cause frustration, again, among men. I suggest you restrain from bullying women feeling themselves rating perfumes and sharing their joy - and mind your own damn business, buddy. This is a perfume website, for rating, discussing and getting to know perfumes. Not for putting others down. @foreverest we support you -keep reinventing and exploring!

where can ı get it in TURKEY?
First off: it's BACK! It's available on Notion and many other stores again! to me this is the absolute perfect balance of comforting, elegant, subdued, dark-light and unique. It's an excellent everyday wear but also perfect for a night-out. It dries down to a very subtly sweet incense with just a touch of liquorish. It's not smokey like Bronzewood & Leather or Gucci Guilty pour home edp. It's more like that sweet-ish Japanese incense type of smokey. It gives your clothes a beautiful clean elegant touch, and though its projection isn't huge, it does stay on your skin all day during the colder months. Thankfully it does NOT, to my nose, smell like Tom Ford BL (ew!!!!), nor does it smell like Zara's WO/02 Wood Street thank goodness. They share similarities but thankfully this CDG Black is unlike any other perfume out there. I will be purchasing a backup bottle when it's on sale - currently 120 Euros on Notino with a cyber week discount = 93 Euros. This now enters into my top 5 perfumes: 1: CDG Black edt 2. Dyptique Tempo edp 3. Massimo Dutti: Tinted Twill edp 4. Dyptique Tam Dao edp (except it's sooooooooo weak) 5. Timbersilk (pure edp) from Etsy.
After my second divorce, I started having trouble getting dressed. My ex-husbands had always badgered me to wear this or that – something to make me look hot, to look not quite as hot, to wear something that ‘suits the occasion’ as one of them would often say or *insert condescending glace here* as the other would often react. Now that I’m once again free to reinvent myself, I’ve realized that I’m not exactly sure who I am or want to be for other people. In my apartment, I’m comfy pajamas, and at work, I’m business casual, but just outside, out and about? Random. And that counts for perfume too. Whatever grabs my attention. Enough dumb reaches to send perfumery students back to Pre-K. So inevitably, a lot of blue fragrances and polite green fragrances. My bottle of Costa Azzurra went from 90% full to 10% in a year, and now I’m going to have to figure out how to transfer the new juice from its mid-ass gold-ripple bottle back into my overpriced but very-pretty blue Private Line spritzer. But as we know, repetition breeds boredom, sterility (not that that’s anything new for yours truly) and, with a style of perfume so popular among the general population, it starts to erase one’s identity. WHO AM I? Is not a question that is cute for a thirty-something-year-old to be asking. Yes, life is an adventure, but baby, you should have a foundation in your fourth decade! Enter Comme des Garcons Black. The Blue fragrance for bad bitches. Maybe its just my blackened heart or the last gasps of a rebellious teenage spirit trapped in an young unc’s body, but this magic potion works anytime, anywhere. It’s a statement maker that’s somehow still smooth and classy as hell. It has edge, but the kind that’s closer to a sharp jawline than a scowl. In the office it’s no nonsense, and in the club it’s mischievous as hell. Incense? Not churchy – clean and mysterious. Woods? Dry and textured, but no cutesy or try-hard NYC chic. If I smelled this on a man, I might get another ex-husband, and if I smelled it on a lady, we’re getting a uHaul. Here’s a numbered rating for you math-brained fragheads: Scent: 8.5/10. Excellent, but too chill and polished to send you to fragrance Nirvana. Performance: 10/10. And I don’t mean beastmode bs, I mean perfectly balanced. It’ll do its job for a good 8 hours without scaring the hose unless you spray it like a hunky fireman all over your fire-hot body. Weather: Whenever. Apply lighter in hot weather, as if any reasonable person who wears fragrance wouldn’t do so automatically. If you like: Nasomatto, masculine classics, walking into a room like everyone already has a crush on you, Robert Eggers movies, getting 100mL of a top-of-the-line fragrance for under $150, women wearing shoulder pads, Women Wearing Shoulder Pads (the excellent new Adult Swim series), the masculine vibe of looking pensively over a cityscape dotted with hazy dive bar memories and streetlamp-lit night walks.
Black licorice, black pepper, and solemn incense. These dominate the lifespan of the fragrance on me, lending an air of simple gothic sophistication. Of the comme scents I've tried none really linger too intensely, exception being the og EDP, but this one is persistent in its subtlety. I don't find it screaming from my skin, but persistently hugging tightly, gently reminding you from time to time that it's there, and it will reside on my clothes for days after wear--again, quite subdued. I only really get compliments on Black when I'm in quite close proximity with others, it's safe for an office environment or a night out and I could definitely see someone making this their daily driver. To the licorice averse: fear not... the resins and woods lingering alongside it tame it into something delightfully dark and sweet. It's not groundbreaking, far from the most experimental to come from the house. It has a wistful air about it but not without suggesting a resolute depth of spirit. Perhaps unintentionally, this hearkens to the beginnings of the Comme des Garcons BLACK line, back in 09, set amidst the financial crisis of the time and centering on a return to the house's basics. A return to resolute form despite the tumult and drudgery of the world: Live free with strong will.
DESCRIPTION: "Top notes are Incense, Black Pepper and Olibanum;" MY EXPERIENCE: super strong incense and black pepper, couldn't smell the olibanum. There's a subtle sweetness to it as it dries down a bit which could be either the olibanum OR the liquorice, hard to tell. DESCRIPTION: "middle notes are Birch, Licorice, Leather and Pepperwood™;" MY EXPERIENCE: Definitely get the pepper wood and that campfire smell from the birch. Liquorice very subtle, just a hint of that anise sweetness. Couldn't for the life of me smell any leather. DESCRIPTION: "base notes are Cedar and Vetiver." MY EXPERIENCE: Cedar comes through subtly since the middle and top notes linger around in waves for quite a while, so can only notice in the gaps. Couldn't really discern the vetiver smell, but it did smell like an outdoor campfire so maybe the vetiver subtly contributed to an outdoorsy vibe. I wouldn't call it smokey, but to me it smells like burnt wood after the smoke has mostly gone away. Kinda like what's leftover of a campfire thats been going all night on a dampish winter morning. +pepper. If I'm layered up in winter and I spray it on myself and a bit on my clothes, it feels like I'm all cozy and bundled up next to a campfire. I don't wear this in warm weather but it is GREAT when it's cold. The smell also comes in waves rather than a consistent smell. I'll be able to smell it consistently for the first 0.5-2hrs, but afterwards it'll just be random waves of this peppery, burnt wood. I use a lot of it but I definitely don't need to. I just REALLY like the smell. If I don't wear a lot then I often wear it with another fragrance, usually after about 2hrs have passed. Definitely need to sample before getting a whole bottle. When my friends have tried it, not all of them have loved it. A few of my friends didn't like the initial smell but liked it after about 30-60mins when they started to get more of the wood and liquorice notes. If you don't like incense or black pepper in fragrances, don't get it. OVERALL MY EXPERIENCE: smell: 10/10 pepper, incense, campfire longevity: 6/10 Technically lasts long, but not at consistent level. Similar on clothes too. sillage: 2/10 doesn't linger in the air long, so if someone doesn't like the smell it won't stick around much projection: 5/10 Strong initially, then comes in waves. Overall it projects about an arms length away in short bursts, more intimate in the gaps. NOTE: I'd only wear it in cold weather, so it doesn't project super far since it's either on my clothes or it's on my skin under my clothes. Strength: 5/10. Comes in waves. 7/10 initially, then after about an hour it's a 1-2/10 with short bursts of 5-7/10. NOTE: I like the smell so it might not seem as strong to me - my sister who wasn't a fan of the initial smell thought it was overwhelming when first sprayed.
I never thought I would say this, but Black is as close as a signature scent gets for me. It is dark, dark without drowning in the ever-obligatory amber. Unapologetically dark- I love it! I now wear it everyday (I never wear deodorant, I wear perfumes instead) and I noticed how Black even brings out the best from other fragrances- likely because the olibanum adapts well. Black is one of the greats in the land of smokes. Upon testing it, I have worn it throughout the week to see how it held up and it did not disappoint me at all. Eventually, I am so happy to have gotten a full bottle of "Black". I compared Black to other fragrances before I ordered a bottle. Perfumer H's "Smoke" is very similar to Comme des Garcons' "Black", but Comme des Garcons is the obvious winner to me. CdC has what Le Labo's "Patchouli" and "Guaiac" are lacking for me: they only project tar for a very short duration and much weaker than other smokes. It outperforms other smoke fragrances, while being only an Eau de Toilette instead of an EdP. Black is not completely original in the birch tar and olibanum range, it is even reminiscent of Oudh Palao and Shalimar, but it holds its own spot as a beautifully dark scent that does not go down the path of ambering itself down (I know it has got an amber note, but that is not the same as being watered down by it). What has been said about Black not being for "soft types" is true. I am not at all genderfluid nor unisex, but as a more dominant/diva type, this suits me. Black has great longevity, given that it is an EdT. Actually, the projection and longevity are insane. Better than most niche fragrances I have ever worn (which are a lot). 9/10.
Damn. Ok so. This reminds me of Gaiac 10. The dry down is to die for. This is a bit or everything I enjoy in perfumery. It’s dark moody but also airy. I love incense and this did not disappoint. Last about 7 hours on skin… 3-4 hrs projection. Well crafted. A bit sweet at first but the dry down is so addicting. I love smelling it. This is something I love to wear and smell on myself. It encapsulates my yearning for darkness. Its so sexy and alluring.
HANDS DOWN my fav perfume of all time. dark and gothic yet has an airy feel to it. will purchase 10 bottles as backup if it gets discontinued
Another really good fragrance from Comme des Garcons. The black pepper is really prominent and it is dry and smokey, but in a very pleasing way. I love the birch, incense and olibanum, but the vetiver and cedar makes this unisex fragrance lean ever so slightly more masculine. I wish the liquorice note was more prominent! A touch of anise would have made this perfect.
Tried this as people said it smells like black lacquer by Tom ford and I’m just not going to pay Tom ford prices. Unfortunately I don’t find them remotely similar. This is harsh , peppery and very heavy. It smooths and mellows out in the dry down though I will admit but still I can’t imagine this smelling all that pleasant on a person.
This is basically a cousin of Le Labo Patchouli 24. Its dark, smoky and addictive. This is for bikers and people who love wearing black leather jackets.
Purely dark, smokey, and gothic. Niche scent that cuts through cooler temps. Smells like new leather and black pepper initially but can be overwhelming for some. Not for me. Definitely NOT a blind buy. 8/10
Looking for a bottle of this or a decant. Let me know if you want to get rid of one!
dark and brooding, grungy yet strangely intoxicating. i’ve never experienced anything quite like cdg black. it is a creature hiding in the shadows or a mastermind plotting revenge - evil in a sexy way. it is not for the subtle or the shy. cdg black is a statement - disruptive, disobedient, magnetic to some and repulsive to others. it is the beauty found at the margins of a wretched world.
