Creamy clean sandalwood, disappointingly expensive
Straightforward, clean sandalwood and cedar. A bit of citrus in the beginning wears off quickly. I am wary about wearing overwhelming scents at work (healthcare). I apply Tam Dao to my abdomen and red string bracelet after showering in the evenings; the residual goes with me to work the following day. It definitely has a temple-like characteristic. It reminds me of a whitewater camp on the Futaleufu River in Chile: the solid wood hut/bar next to the hot tub, the dry sauna, the yoga/library building, the dining hut. Fresh forest air mixed with well-worn wood.
this fragrance starts out very aromatic, with lime and ginger at the forefront, which reminds me of southeast asian cuisine a little; it's fresh, but a little un-perfume-y, something i'd normally eat for lunch rather than spray on myself, but i don't hate it? it settles soon enough though, and the woods kick in and dominate the scent profile thereafter: cedar shavings and then skin-soft sandalwood, very serene and meditative. there's a hint of coriander which makes it smell worn-in, slightly sweat-like, but not unpleasantly so. it's an androgynous-to-masculine-leaning scent, but in my opinion sandalwood suits just about anyone. it's not super long lasting, unfortunately; i really enjoy it nonetheless, it feels very different from other sandalwood-forward fragrances in my collection. i actually think it suits warm summer weather, but i could see myself wearing it all year round.
Smells absolutely incredible, like the calmest forest temple in the most rural part of Japan must smell. I adore the scent. I just want my home office to smell like this, not my skin. It is a truly, truly beautiful scent though.
Opens next level Bergamask, with a slight nutts warm woods rift, puts that to the side and proceeds Bergamask with the slight difference to it.
I really don’t enjoy the first five minutes of this fragrance. I’m not exactly sure which note throws me off, but once that initial opening fades, it transforms into something truly beautiful. The dry-down is centered around an incredibly smooth, calming sandalwood accord. The vanilla and lime sit quietly in the background, supporting the sandalwood rather than competing with it. If you didn’t know the note breakdown beforehand, you probably wouldn’t even realize they’re there. Together they create a soft, creamy foundation that is absolutely gorgeous. If you’re a fan of woody fragrances, this is one that’s easy to appreciate. Its biggest weakness is the performance. It settles into a skin scent fairly quickly with a very intimate scent bubble. It isn’t going to fill a room, but if you’re looking for something clean, woody, refined, and best appreciated up close, this is an excellent choice. Overall Rating: 8/10
This is not a S tier perfume this is fkn GOD tier 📈
Tam Dao is such an interesting one. It's objectively a beautiful sandalwood that evolves on the skin throughout wear. And it's a HUGE compliment getter. Pro-tip, layer it on top of Nemat's sandalwood oil roller for insane longevity. At first spray, it's kind of subtle and pretty fresh and bright. But within fifteen minutes, this creamy sandalwood emerges, and I find that creamy quality quite rare when it comes to greener/fresher/wetter sandalwoods. Even with the parts I love, there's a citrusy/zesty/bright/green element that comes in with the lime, which doesn't work for me. Each time I wear it, I go back and forth between loving it and being unsure. Sometimes it lasts ages, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it smells like a crayon, sometimes like lime, sometimes creamy and sometimes zingy (all from the same tester bottle). It's very appropriate for daytime wear anywhere.
was totally caught off guard when the opening was just straight byredo gypsy water to me. citrusy, sweet sandalwood. but it soon warmed up on my skin and became a deep woodsy, serene scent. smells to me like the inside of a muji store. more masculine than i expected too.
I am inclined that people who like this are lying to themselves to seem sophisticated, this DNA is putrid. I think I could spray this on a homeless person after 2 months without a shower and they would smell considerably worse.
I got a 10ml of this and seriously wondering if the perfume is skunked because... it just smells terrible on my skin. Alcoholic blast replaced by strong almost sour woods; very heavy. Heavy Cedar, but not a comforting one - an opressive cedar, dark damp and musky or musty. Smells much better in the air. Not for me.
If the word "zen" had a smell, this would be it. I just absolutely love this scent DNA. It transports me to a peaceful jungle after it has rained. I started out with the EDT of Tam Dao. I love it, but the longevity left much to be desired. I get maybe 2 hrs with it. I wanted something that would last longer so I blind bought the EDP. I'm happy that I did! The EDT and EDP have some differences but they are also similar enough that they don't feel like completely different fragrances. The sandalwood is turned up in this one and the cedar is still there, but turned down. I actually do get a tiny bit of the lime in this. While it also isn't the most long lasting, I do get a little bit more wear time out of this. If you love a woody, unisex scent you have to try this one.
I don't know why, but I imagine Napoleon smelling like this back in the day. Putting on a bougie perfume and going on a hunt...
this is so calm and creamy.. it might not actually be like super creamy but to my nose and senses i get soft cream.. i lov this but its not necessarily my vibe and great for me personally, amaaazing on someone else though this is like objectively a good fragrance to me
If calm and natural had a smell..this would be it.
From the very first spray, Tam Dao transports me. I close my eyes and I am instantly wandering through a Japanese forest, standing near a luxurious, hidden onsen. The air is heavy with the scent of sacred timber and damp, grounding earth. Wearing this, I feel like a regular at this sanctuary, adorned in a traditional kimono, hair loose, embodying a state of profound wisdom, peace, and quiet, humble wealth. It is an incredible experience of the 'Higher Self': fresh, powerful, earthy, and deeply meditative. If I could change one thing, it would be the performance. I generally prefer my scents to be subtle, but for Tam Dao, I find myself wishing I could saturate my senses in it completely. It is the only fragrance I have ever encountered that makes me want to inhale it 24 hours a day. An absolute masterpiece.
This was so grim on my skin sadly. The smell set my teeth on edge.
A meditative journey to the temples of Indochina. Launched in 2003, Tam Dao is much more than a simple woody perfume: it is an icon of niche perfumery by Diptyque. Inspired by the childhood memories of one of the brand's founders in the sacred forests of Indochina, this jus is an absolute tribute to sandalwood, stripped of any gourmand sweetness and returned in its most spiritual and refreshing purity. The opening of Tam Dao is a blast of fresh and balsamic air. Don't expect the classic citrus fruits: here Italian Cypress and Myrtle dominate, recreating the humid, green and slightly pungent atmosphere of an Asian forest at dawn. The Rose note is extremely discreet, it only serves to soften the initial green edges. The real miracle happens in the heart of the fragrance. Within a few minutes, the balsamic freshness gives way to an enveloping warmth. Sandalwood emerges in all its majesty, dry and creamy at the same time, supported by the rigorous backbone of Cedar Wood. It is the smell of sharpened pencils, of Buddhist temples, of ancient wood warmed by the sun. The base settles on a clean and slightly exotic accord. Rosewood and Spices keep the vibrant vibration of the fragrance alive, while White Musk and Amber create a clean, intimate and reassuring "second skin" effect. Perfectly unisex. It does not have the typical sweetness of commercial feminine woodies, nor the harsh and "barbershop" notes of many masculine ones. It is pure neutrality and elegance. Being the Eau de Toilette version, Tam Dao is not a "screaming" perfume. It has a moderate projection (remains close to the skin, creating an intimate bubble) and lasts approximately 4-6 hours. It is the perfect choice for those looking for a discreet fragrance that does not bother in the office or in formal contexts. Extraordinary in autumn and winter for its comforting warmth, but surprisingly enjoyable even in spring thanks to its green and balsamic opening. Tam Dao EDT is a perfume for the soul. It is not a fragrance designed to seduce or amaze the masses with kilometre-long trails, but to please the wearer. It is zen, introspective, very elegant in its apparent simplicity. If you love pure sandalwood, free of artificial sugars, this is an absolute masterpiece that deserves a place in your collection.
Smelled this in Nordstrom and knew I had to get a full bottle. This truly is the perfect sandalwood: creamy, slight spice, but not too overwhelming. I smell this and I'm transported to somewhere I want to be, but have never been. Like a cafe full of old books, older people drinking their hot coffee and teas as ambient piano plays in the background. I have just come in to escape the rain and I find myself in a place where I know no one, but I feel welcomed. The familiarity I have been looking for is there, and it is home. Truly beautiful.
Tam Dao is truly unisex & was created by either a Tibetan monk or a great-grandmother who was overly attached to her cedar hope chest. Fans will typically find it comforting for one or both of these reasons. I think this would likely be a great fragrance on a man, but it leans slightly masculine for my own taste. Having said that, the EDP is a perfect break from all the cloying gourmands & layers beautifully with almost everything. As my most recent experiment, I layered this with Coco Mademoiselle Intense, and it was gorgeous. So far, I have found this to be the best use of Tam Dao, as it seems to both ground & enhance everything from fresh & transparent green florals or citrus to the heavy ambers & patchoulis I have found cloying when worn as standalone fragrances. All in all, a lovely, smooth, slightly spicy-sweet wood fragrance. This is better than any other sandalwood I've tested & contains the exquisite Mysore sandalwood, which I've loved since discovering Fendi Theorema over 20 years ago. Update: On the negative (or positive, depending on your pov) side, this left my clothing smelling as though it had been stored in the aforementioned cedar chest, perhaps with a weak spice & citrus sachet, for the last decade. I plan to test the EDT, as the EDP was too heavy for me.

I LOVE TAM DAO YES YES YES
This cologne smells like home.
Classy fragrance, very elegant. However, Perris Monte Carlo Santal du Pacifique and Nobile 1942 Sandalo and way better, in terms of scent profile and they have more character than Tam Dao. Though Tam Dao is good, it over hyped a lot, There are far better options
The ideal sandalwood perfume on my skin. If you like sandalwood, you will like this. If you don't care for it, you will not care for this one.
