Escentric 04

I thought I liked this one. On first spray, Escentric 04 smells really nice — woody, interesting and much more complex than Molecule 04. Pomelo! But unfortunately, the longer I wear it, the less I like it. There’s something quite heavy about it on my skin and after a while I find it almost headache-inducing. What initially seems interesting and complex eventually just becomes a bit too much. I much prefer Molecule 04, which gives me that gorgeous woody Javanol character without everything else competing for attention. I’m starting to realise that, generally, I’m just not a huge fan of the Escentric side of the range. I absolutely adore the Molecules and really enjoy the Molecule + collection, but the Escentrics often feel a little too busy for me. I seem to prefer the simplicity and weirdness of the individual aroma molecules — Molecule 05 in particular is one of my all-time favourites. Escentric 04 isn’t a bad fragrance at all, and I can completely understand why people love it. It starts beautifully, but on me it becomes too heavy and eventually gives me a headache. I’ll happily stick with Molecule 04.

Much more artistic than anything else. Designed to be a photorealistic depiction of a Mediterranean coastal olfactory experience, and as someone who’s spent time in those areas it’s very much on the money.

I aquired a travel size of this to have a try of and having tried several of this brand I find this one of the more pleasant ones. It’s summery and citrusy but not bitter as I can sometimes find them and the molecules while giving that synthetic vibe are more much more tolorable in this scent. It’s probs the one I’d get most wear out of all the ones I’ve tried but I’m not sure it’s one I’d upgrade to a full bottle as I just can’t see me reaching for it regularly.

These are the notes I found on the official Escentric Molecules website: Top: Methyl Pamplemousse, Pink Grapefruit, Marijuana, Bergamot, Juniper Berry, Pink Pepper Middle: Hedione (green jasmine bud), Freesia, Osmanthus, Orris, Rose Base: Javanol, Mastic, Labdanum, Iso E Super, Muscone (Musk), Ambroxan, Castoreum, Vetiver As you can see from the official note breakdown, this fragrance contains a huge list of notes , including some unusual ones like marijuana note which I honestly can’t specifically detect here. To simplify it, this smells like a musky aromatic citrus fragrance to my nose. The juicy citrus opening is very prominent, mainly coming from the bergamot and grapefruit, along with an aromatic spicy touch from the juniper berry. Very quickly, the musky aspect from the ambroxan starts to appear especially when sprayed directly onto my skin. This fragrance feels much more alive and complex on skin compared to paper. That’s very typical of ambroxan heavy fragrances, since they tend to react strongly with body heat and individual skin chemistry. On paper, it smells more like a flat aromatic citrus scent. But on my skin, it becomes a musky, aromatic citrus fragrance with noticeably better projection. If I smell it closely, I can also detect soft floral nuances, though they never become prominent enough for me to clearly identify them individually. There’s also a soft creamy woodiness in the background, likely coming from Javanol, which smells like sandalwood. Overall, this is a fresh citrus fragrance that works perfectly for summer, casual wear, or even the gym. However, because the ambroxan is quite prominent, I think it will react differently depending on the wearer’s skin chemistry. On my skin, it becomes citrusy, aromatic, musky. The difference between spraying it on paper and skin isn’t that prominent, except for the musky ambroxan effect, which becomes much stronger and more projecting once it interacts with body heat. Overall, this is definitely a great citrus fragrance that doesn’t feel boring. It has a modern, futuristic character without becoming too niche or difficult to wear. Everything feels very well blended, and I still think it’s worth the price if you can find it at a discounter price. 8.2/10

i like this, at least in the lotion form. it smells like tv static and brand new tech but in a very natural and comforting way. it's warm like when you take a tape out of the VCR.

Because of this fragrance I learned that I'm not a big fan of sandalwood 😐

I really don't like this one. I think it's the osmanthus or this incarnation of grapefruit, but it is making me dizzy and nauseous. However, I layered it with Oh Ma Biche and somehow I can tolerate it much better. I cannot smell the slightly smoky opening of Oh Ma Biche, but Escentric 04 doesn't make me nauseous any longer, which is great! I will not repurchase though, as this one is clearly not for me. Learn from my mistake, don't buy this without testing. On clothes, by itself, it lasts for days. I really wish this would work for me.

It's unbelievable how strong this perfume is on me... it's fascinating, as fascinating as that blue-black dress. If you remember, some people see it as gold and white... some people don't smell this perfume at all, or not enough. My friend tried it and it was almost unnoticeable on her skin... amazingly, it's a bomb on me! It's so strong that everyone comes up to me and asks me what I'm wearing 🤣🤣🤣🤣 truly unbelievable. I'm only allowed to spray once, otherwise it's too much. Sandalwood seems to smell amazingly strong on me, as does Lancôme Idole, power-mad, but this one is three times stronger.

Freshly zested grapefruit peel and bitters, with a beautiful clean-laundry dry-down. The herbaceous note makes it lean masculine to me. The punchiest of all the Escentrics in my opinion! My favorite work scent!

Another default scent of household cleaning products with lemon, I didn't smell anything interesting at all.

not for me I tested this on some fabric first and immediately all I could smell was kalamata olives, plain as day. My friend said that it smelled like the inside of an uber when the driver has been overzealous with cologne. After spraying it on my skin for the first time the grapefruit definitely came through, and i just so happened to get in an uber which had its own babershop-clean smell and the two were mixing in a way that made me feel positively ill. The way this reacts with my skin is sinister and soapy, almost had to wash it off.

Linear fresh and sour lemon scent. Not grapefruit cause grapefruit has specific bitterness that I don’t smell in this perfume. More male in my opinion, but I finished my sample with a great pleasure. PS the trace is absolutely beautiful

Smells like a pretty woody/green/citrus to begin with but after about 2hr some kind of stinky weird sour salty smell seems to emerge. I smell like tangy fish soup fml, my heartfelt apologies to anyone who encounters me today before I get a chance to clean up. So weird I've worn it before and never noticed it curdle on my skin like that

A surprise hit for me. Reminds me very much of Le Labo's Cedrat 37, which I adore, but at a fraction of the price. The secret here is that you MUST spray it on your clothes - for me it disappears in minutes and isn't especially interesting on skin, but somehow when sprayed on clothes it explodes into a compliment-garnering, heavy duty citrus beast.

I liked the fragrance, but this one is definitely not a blind buy. On my skin it smells pretty straightforward and simplistic, just like juniper and nothing more from the notes mentioned. Very authentic, natural but not too masculine juniper. More fresh than woody, but not synthetic at all.

I think I enjoy the blended frangrances in this line more than the molecules, though the whole line really has an intensity due to those molecular scents. As a gin lover, I can see the appeal of this one. It opens up strong, spicy, electric. Crisp zesty citrus notes, sharp bitter juniper, woodsy santalwood and piney, with a lingering touch of flora and fauna that makes it an inebriating and bold skin scent. Like if you smelled this on your crush, you'd get a bolt of electricity, a jolt of danger, a feral feeling they'll bite your lip when you kiss. I get more spicy, woodsy and dark than fresh bright greens. It's not an everyday scent for me, I can't quite associate a season with it, though it feels more like something I'd reach for in fall and winter.

Hell YES. This one wasn’t planned. I stumbled upon it like you stumble into trouble: half-aware, fully fated. Escentric 04 isn’t just a perfume. It’s a heatwave. A system error that wants to pin you to the wall. It opens with dry grapefruit and weed, rough and almost abrasive. The bergamot is sharp. The juniper bites. It’s high-voltage citrus, crackling like bare wires. Then comes the filth. That gasoline-rubber-tire grittiness. The scent of hot concrete, synthetic grease, sweat-slick skin. You can smell the mechanic: stupid hot, shirtless, covered in motor oil, a joint in his mouth, eyes locked on you like you’re the last sin he intends to commit tonight. It’s all friction. Clean vs dirty. Chemical vs carnal. Metal vs skin. Javanol brings this cool, razor-sharp sandalwood edge. Ambroxan and Iso E Super act like pure pheromones, giving off that oddly erotic alien feel. The rose and orris feel like a soft kiss after a hard pull on the hair. The whole thing is industrial cyberpunk filth. Unisex? Sure. But this scent doesn’t care about your gender. It cares about you unzipping your Diesel jeans fast and making a mistake you’ll still taste on your tongue years later. A lot of people don’t get it. Maybe they shouldn’t. It doesn’t try to win you over. It’s dirty-hot and hits hard. In all the right ways. 🔥🔧 5/5.

I love this shrink-wrapped synthetic concoction. It’s bright, bright, bright and super fucking weird. There’s a funk that reaches my nose on the deepest part of the inhale, it smells like mustard, like Dijon mustard. There’s candied grapefruit and inescapable javanol and fruit-leather thing, maybe orris? They come all together to make a kind of tea accord, any icy citrus flower tea! And then you turn around and it’s all warm again, and then earthy, brought down to the wet dirt. There has to be cashmeran in here. I know I said this is a synthetic deal, and it is - but it also reminds me of a fresh forest nymph in one of those wet forests where there’s lots of moss and flowers but also citrus trees and cup-shaped leaves filled with rainwater. Definitely a mood lifter. Fresh, and warm and foreign. Funky and shape shifting and super long lasting.

Ouch, so many critical reviews! I never had a chance to try Escentric Molecules when they were trending, but I have been curious about them, so I'm very excited to finally try Escentric 04. I find it interesting and pleasant. I don't always enjoy citrus scents, but E04 is not too sour, maybe the milky notes mellow it down. I like the citrus juniper combo here, and I appreciate that they don't make the fragrance overly masculine. On my skin it's a true unisex, perhaps even feminine leaning.

How do you get a perfume to go from "Grapefruit Gin and Tonic" to "Woman Genital Area"? Escentric 04 smells gorgeous in the opening, like Osmanthus tea, grapefruit zest and gin. Grapefruit gin and tonic. But when it dried down, the perfume changes 100%. When it dries down, it smells like woman genital area. It not a bad smell obviously... it's just not what I personally would like to smell all over my body when I use a 200€ perfume. This is exactly how APOM by Maison Francis Kurkdjian smelles when it dries down. I wonder what makes these two perfume smell the same when they dry down, since they don't have any common notes. Such a shame, the opening was gorgeous.

I like it, smells very citrusy fresh but with a certain pungent accord in the background which ruins it for me. I don’t know if it’s the galbanum or the mastic note (I am not really familiar with these two) but it’s something that’s competing with the beautifully combo of grapefruit and juniper berries notes in here. First impressions it’s a meh, I have smelled better, I’ m not really into this. Literally every designer or niche house has a nice freshy, aromatic, citrus heavy scent that’s beautifully crafted without any unpleasant tones. Will update if I decide to give it another shot.

This straight up smells like a pomelo grapefruit to me. While I like the smell, it's not something I want to smell like. My yoga mat, however smells amazing with it.

To me Escentric 04 mainly smells like the Rose Sandalwood accord found in the heart of Chanel's Egoiste. Since I absolutely love the Rose Sandalwood accord in Egoiste I also love Escentric 04. To my nose there are no challenging notes in Escentric 04 making it an easy wear for me. I get over eight hours of longevity.

One of the most beautiful perfumes (Javanol) natural artificial sandalwood with citrus and envelope (marijuana) and the fresh smell of mastaki 🔥 And its conclusion (ISO E Super) Ambroxan 🚨

Thank you @mareacamacho for the suggestion to put Burberry Goddess on top of this. I really struggled with the mastic note of Escentric 04. I wanted so badly to get to the creamy smooth sandalwood that I love, but it was taking too long. It came across very sharp and pungent on my skin. I took the suggestion of putting Burberry Goddess over it and voila!! (I am also on team overspray 🤣🤣).

Really, really nasty - so disappointing. The harsh and sour opening turned my stomach and I couldn't tolerate it at all. It actually made me feel physically ill. Perhaps it would have evolved into the sandalwood and floral blend that I have read about, but I could not stand to smell it for one second longer, so off it came.

I purchased this fragrance in a sale for just over £50, and for that price it is an unbelievable deal. On my skin the grapefruit comes across as closer to orange, making it similar to Terre d'Hermès, however a much cleaner more youthful version of it. On skin I go anosmic to it quite quickly, but on clothes it is still very detectable. general performance is great - around 10 hours with a large sillage that my family enjoy, although in the sillage the woodiness is lost a bit so comes across as pure orange zest - no complaints though! Overall, for RRP I would be hesitant but if you can get it for under ~£80 I would test and purchase in an instant. Also fairly safe for a blind buy if you enjoy woody citrus fragrances

This is my favorite of what I've tried so far (01, 03, and now 04) from EM. It has the most character, a really fresh grapefruit opening, then eventually a mix of soft florals. I'm really curious how they even made this. I need to hunt down a sample of Molecule 02 though. So far I'm not blown away by the house's offerings from a fragrance standpoint - the formulations are undoubtably unique though.
