Love, love LOOOVE this amazing dry-down! All the notes meld together beautifully and you're left with a persistent, gorgeous sillage for hours upon hours, and its truley intoxicating! 2 full sprays is all ya need for the entire day into the evening, or even just one spray will work for some. A 10 outta 10 in my book! Love Rien Intense Incense! Sometimes ill do a half spritz on my arm just so I can sniff it all throughout the day again, into the evening bc this transitions from A smokey, intense-gothic creation, to a (slightly) more contemporary, more classic-ish masterpiece with a unique modern edge!! Truley Magnifique!!
Not sure why I haven’t tested this one sooner. It’s great. Daring and old school but with a modern edge. Great trail.
I find it very difficult to write about Intense Incense after having already reviewed the original. And yet, there are things worth saying. Where Rien is the fragrance of a magnificent funeral, Rien Intense Incense is more theatrical, more dramatic. To illustrate the idea with a cinematic comparison, I'd say Intense Incense is the scent of Charlotte Gainsbourg in Antichrist by Lars von Trier, whereas the original Rien belongs to Grace (Nicole Kidman) in Dogville, by the same director. The first thing that strikes me is how justified its existence feels. Far from being a purely commercial flanker, it simply reshuffles the deck, taking the same ingredients and placing them in a different order. You unmistakably recognize Rien, yet everything has changed. The aldehydes polish the incense, giving it a cool, vivid shimmer. The leather steps into the background, though it never disappears, while the overall finish becomes more metallic and noticeably fresher. And that freshness is precisely what makes this version so compelling. Intense Incense is smokier, brighter, and therefore surprisingly well suited to the warmth of summer. Even if it's still a rather daring choice for the season, I found it more fitting than the original while wandering through tourist-filled cities beneath the crushing heat of yet another French heatwave. I've read that, for some people, the current formulation of Intense Incense has significantly weaker longevity and a more restrained projection than the original. Personally, I think it depends on the conditions. The first time I wore it, I also felt it faded rather quickly. Yesterday, however, I experienced the exact opposite: it kept shimmering from morning until night without ever losing its presence. Was it the temperature? The humidity? Ask a chemist. Finally, for those unsure which version of Rien to choose, I'd focus on their personalities. If you enjoy fragrances that are sharper and fresher, go for Intense Incense. If you prefer your scents denser and more leather-forward, the original remains the better choice. Either way, the Rien experience is always richer if you've smelled the original first. So, which path will you take? Will you wander through a desolate Garden of Eden overrun by harvest mites, or will you try to outrun the relentless gangsters chasing you through the little town of Dogville?
It's not an easy smell, feels like a burned wooden church - the smoke accord is prevalent. I don't really feel incense, but to me it has a strong palo santo note. Very strong, almost eternal.
Paradise, this stuff is pure bliss for the men of this world. Males of a certain.....errrr.....vintage, shall we say! Incense, labdanum, rose, leather, aldehydes and oakmoss amongst others combine to make an astounding nuanced, animalic and soapy scent of the highest order. This is mans man heaven! Us fellas have been mourning the loss of proper vintage gents scents and trying modern versions alongside new fragrances that do their best to mitigate the IFRA legislative madness and total BS, usually to no avail. This one from Etat libre d'orange feels like it has slipped through the net of red tape, thank God 🙏. There are a few other exceptions too, like the Naughton & Wilson and Rogue perfumes offerings that have the quality, strength and integrity of traditional male perfumery. Rien intense incense is very much in the vein of proper men's aromaband performs like it too. Kouros, Lapidus pour homme, Antaeus (old school formulations) and the like finally have a worthy modern addition to sit along side them, a cologne to carry on their glorious legacy. This product does come with a few very necessary warnings; :If you wear this your schlong may well grow to the length where you'll have to tuck it into your sock! :You'll instantly know how to take on MMA fighters and knock them out! : instantly, you'll have better insight than the managers and players of your favourite team. :Regardless of whether you have previous experience or even a licence you'll automatically know how to ride V-twin motorcycle to within an inch of its life....or yours! :The desire to convert your garage or spare room into a weights gym will be all consuming. :lastly, a considerable amount of extra funds will be needed to buy a complete new wardrobe consisting of not only motorcycle apparel but a pair of Trickers/redwing style boots, a high end and beautifully tailored sports jacket, immaculate button down shirts and well made Jeans that don't look like they've been sprayed on! It is illegal to wear this fragrance for the following reasons; :you are a vegan or vegetarian. :you are above middle management level. :you are unable to wire a plug, change a light bulb, check your oil etc. :are lactose intolerant or have issues with gluten, wheat etc. :do not consume alcohol (tobacco is not compulsory but occasional use will help with you application to own this scent....maybe!). :you drive an electric vehicle. :You're a fan of reality TV and social media. :you actually, truly care and BELIEVE what anyone else thinks about your personal choices and opinions is important. Females; Please do not spray this on your person unless you wear predominantly black clothing and makeup along with combat boots. Be warned, you may grow a male appendage and a taste for Steak, sport, engines and strong beer....the risk is yours. At the very least you'll have a trail of middle aged men in your wake to navigate, you've been warned! 😆listen, just a bit of fun but there are certainly glimmers of truth in there somewhere for the sort of guy that will like this, not that I'm identifying at all! 😳 It's just a very realistic and retro (to me) mens scent harking back to better times of free speech, common sense and opportunity for all! Beautiful but somehow both modern and classic with great performance. An excellent job. Speaking of performance, I've given this two full wears in reasonably warm temps, it's very strong, initially filling the living room! It's been detectable on me for the whole day and still more than a skin scent at bedtime. It's a fresh bottle so I'm going to hide it away (from further temptation) in the cupboard until Autumn when I'm assured by many others that the performance not only improves and smooths out but becomes a little darker. I can't wait! Incredible value as very little is needed per application and even better if bought with a discount. Straight to my top shelf where it will be a permanent addition, being worn often as the temperature cools. Beautiful, top level perfumery.
Favorite fragrance of all time. Feels like I died and went to heaven, but I smell the price Jesus paid for me to be there. No jokes here, not this time. A truly perfect scent.
It indeed contains more frankincense (which, for some reason, has an animalic note) compared to the OG. The question is whether it is worth the premium, given that Rien can be found for much less.
Hot priest scent.
To put it simply, if you were a fan of Kouros or Antaeus bak in their heyday, pick this one up - it's like the modern version of those two with more than decent performance. However, this is DEFINITELY not the beast people make it out to be. It leans a little bit old school, sure, but it's nothing that even an intermediate level collector couldn't handle. Dominant notes of aldehydes, which give this a sort of medicinal and ''band aid'' like smell, but this has been toned down compared to the original Rien. There is a resinous incense that eventually becomes slightly smoky. Also there is definitely leather, cumin and oakmoss - but this combination gives off a smell thats sort of similar to a strong, ''polished'' or ''varnished'' sandalwood. I have a bottle that was manufactured in February of 2025, and the performance is NOT as bold and powerful as it was in older bottles. This has absolutely been reformulated. I had sampled this before 2025 and the performance was absolutely bombastic and it lasted for over 24 hours. My bottle, however, still has great projection for the first hour but the smell disappears from the skin after 7 hours. The overall scent seems rather watered down compared to older bottles as well. So for those who are expecting a total bomb of a fragrance, consider checking the batch code before buying and look for bottles pre-2025. Price is reasonable and the quality is good. Also, I know I'll be in the minority here, but I find this easier to wear than the original Rien.
Opens up as if you have your nose directly on a burning incense stick, then lowers it's intensity as it dries down, still having that dominant incense with a bit of spice added to it. Pungent and spiritual.
Its the same scent as the OG, but rearranged slightly in structure. With this Intense version, the aldehydes are push right up front instead of in the mids, and doubled in strength. The fizziness explodes out that petroleum note in the opening burst, but as the oily note calms down the ozonic fizziness of the aldehydes remain. Think of Molecule 01 but with violets. The aldehydes are way overboard for this version though, it starts to go towards the ozonic / calone direction. The rose is slightly boosted as well, but it still remains as a supporting role, adding a touch of sweetness to the base as a balancing element. I think the incense is drowned out by the aldehydes. i feel the OG is better balanced, it feels denser and wears better. I dropped this from a 7 to a 6/10 because the aldehydes in the mid to drydown is quite fatigueing.
my bottle sits in a dark closet for two years right now and you know guys, aldehides that pushed me away from this bottle for so long finally calmed down in a way.... :) now even after 10 minutes after spraying it l completely love it, and l think l can pull it off even when it's +18 outside with a micro sprays. it is gothic, it is cold, it is dark, like a burned down church that was thrown in to the cold ocean, love it!
I remember a few years ago, I went searching for a perfume with the scent of church incense. I found a cheap sample of this ELDO and, eager to try it, sprayed it in my car immediately after receiving the package. Without reading any reviews about this fragrance, I was shocked. It wasn't what I expected at all. Instead of church incense, I smelled Indian incense sticks. Thanks to this perfume, I also discovered aldehydes; they're a strong presence here. The whole thing has a very dark feel. To me, it's a scent with retro overtones, depicting someone who reads tarot cards and runs a small esoteric shop in a small wooden building near the forest, while also practicing necromancy in a cemetery after dark. It's not a safe scent to buy blind; it's a unique, powerful oddity. Two sprays and it fills the entire room, lasts on the skin for over 10 hours, and clothes practically smell like laundry. I love this perfume with all my heart, and I know for sure that I'll be buying it again after I finish this bottle. Rien Intense Incense will either repel you or steal your soul.
Rien, yes. Nothing but sadness. A classy sadness or depressive type of smell. You smell a very loud incense scent. It’s beautiful, a bit of rose is here mixed with woods and a airy type of leather. From the exterior yes it’s beautiful, classy elegant. But then smoke comes from the heart and the lungs of this fragrance. Now the woods burn, the leather too and the incense takes even more place but it’s the literal smell of depression, a real depression. Like everyone’s going to like the smell, like a friend group cannot suspect on of them being in serious depression. But there’s something depressing among all these smoky smells, insanity. Like there’s « rien » left for him. L’odeur de la solitude cachée derrière un beau costume.
Autumn evening in a dense spruce forest, the surroundings bear signs of intensive logging and a tall church tower rises against you. The side nave of the church is built of roughly hewn logs, the portal is open. You enter, but good few dozen meters before you can already smell incense in the air. You walk between the pews and climb the long spiral stairs to the pulpit...two more and you are at the top, open a small door and behind them on the wall is...a ceramic urinal with a blue-green deodorant puck thrown in the middle - the scent of pine and sea breeze...shocking, inappropriate, it's a dream, dark, intense, a cologne from the 90s but this scent is not old or outdated, you have to be a strong personality, don't be afraid of the first half hour and then...first-class signature fragrance material. NOT FOR FRESH fragrancers, better suited for older men (40+, might be younger but you should be certain type to pull this through). Make a mix of George Clooney , Ryan Gosling and Tom Hardy. Dark greeny-grey scent with a hint of blue. One of the strongest fragrances of Etat Libre d'Orange, it definitely does not suffer from rapid evaporation, on the contrary... be careful not to apply more than 2-3 applications unnecessarily.
I am obsessed with liturgical perfumes but unfortunately every single one I’ve smelled was either too soft or intimate. I love Unum Lavs by filippo sorcinelli but It does bot last. This one Is strong, it lasts through wind as well but it smells too clean for me. For people who are not familiar with ultra niche scent profiles this will be intense and unpleasant But for me, whose nose has been through some shit, This is very clean and soapy and easy to wear fragrance. I will buy it but i dont think this is dark and terrifying enough.
Masterpiece. Main differences between the original and Intense to me is that the florals are toned down. Everything else is amped up. The most "challenging" part is the aldehydes, it gets better the more you wear it. They only serve a quick blast to ready you for the main act of oily leather. Also the cumin is less present here than the original. The original has a very balsamic and cumin BO dry down. This doesn't.
You either love it or hate it. I happen to be in the first group. This fragrance does not fcuk around.
It's not bad, but it has a very prominent rubber vibe to me. It actually reminds me of a new car smell that mix of fresh leather and industrial materials. The Incense and aldehydes make it feel very dark. It’s definitely bold and intense, but that smoky, rubbery texture is what stands out the most. I could say that it's an industrial fragrance. Not for everyone but interesting.
The two strongest notes that I could smell are incenses and rose. This is such a strong fragrance and room filling that is only suitable for winter and events.. This is in my opinion the best Etat Libre has produced as I find many of their fragrances to be cloning other DNAs.
@peterpony nailed it! It smells like an UNLIT ROSE INCENSE STICK! Bravo!
While it may have a slight animalic opening, what I noticed within minutes is how the floral notes (I first thought jasmine) cut through giving a stark contrast to the darker background. I was so worried I would hate this as i always hear “dark/loud/strong/oud/heavy/ animalic/incense”. This is truly beautiful and unique and completely wearable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Love incense scents in general, but there's a note in this for the first several minutes after application that registers as unpleasantly rubbery and fruity on my skin, which put me off initially. It dries down to be comfortingly woody and soapy, with incense stick scent lingering the whole time. Not my personal favorite, and definitely not a blind buy, but kind of lovely and I can imagine being really attracted to this on someone else, especially someone older.
While some of the guys below are trying to make it sound like an impossible fragrance to pull off I'd argue the opposite, especially if you're an arab ,this is the type of scent profile we grew up smelling in our childhoods I even spray it at home to relax myself sometimes, its not the monster of a fragrance everyone is making it to be its quite the tame misunderstood beast the way I see it ,something like that , and even if you were not an arab or of a culture that heavily emphasizes on incense and oud , I feel like you'd have many occasions to pull it off especially the older gentlemen, in my opinion it exudes elegance and you can even layer it with a sweeter fragrance or perhaps a rose one would do it the most justice anyways my point is if you've smelt this and you like it but the reviews made you hesitate don't care about them its a lovely scent that radiates class and with the bonus of a monstrous performance.
Tot ce simt este tamaie, piele, aldehide, iar tamaie, si dupa un timp, iar tamaie ! Este mai mult masculin, puternic, il aseman cu purpose 50. Pe haine il simt si a doua zi ! Super puternic !
Etat Libre d’Orange #13 – Oldness and decay Somewhere amongst the many reviews for Rien Intense Incense, i remember reading one that stuck with me. The reviewer asked the reader to imagine entering a dark temple where a deep resonating chanting takes place amongst flickering candle lights and the hypnotising scent of incense. The purpose of the chanting is not to worship a deity, but the scent itself. Such a description sparked my interest for this perfume long before i’ve actually found and fleshed out my love for the note of incense in perfumery. Im very happy to have been able to obtain a sample because its one of those creations that were on my “checklist” for years. As others before me noted, this is a very challenging perfume, one of the most challenging i've encountered infact. To me it has a very particular smell and i believe many people will be unfamiliar with it, especially those living in cities or in generally “civilised” enviroments. Amouage Memoir Man was one of those perfumes that took me back to my childhood and was reminiscent of times spent around my grandparents house who lived in a village. It brought back a vivid and realistic imagery and so did Rien Intense Incense. We used to visit neighbours or other villagers with my grandparents and often they were old, sick people living in poor conditions. The scenario im describing is not uncommon even to this day in rural areas where people live in insalubrous enviroments and very old houses. Whenever we entered their house, i was hit with a pungent and stale smell of very old, decaying and moldy furniture mixed with the smell of unwashed and equally old clothes, of illness, of the body odours of old people and the general smell of a rural household full of animals. Often these animals, ranging from dogs, cats and chicken would roam free everywhere, including parts of their houses. Sprinkle that with the smell of dried up urine emanating from the clothes of these often sick and bedridden people and what you get is, once again, a strong stale and pungent smell that permeates everything. Sometimes you could pick up the scent in the village church because the pews and the wood out of which the church was made off was in the same condition as the furniture you would see in these households. That and the fact that most of the people attending the church were actually the ones i described above and they carried their geriatric conditions with them wherever they would go. Rien Intense Incense recreates that smell to me with disturbing accuracy. As offputting as the imagery i described is, its very real and eventually you get used to it and altho it never ceases to be bothering, you no longer are repulsed by it. For this reason, Rien Intense Incense doesn’t repulse me eighter. Quiet the opposite, i appreciate the vivid memory it brought back for me and altho its obviously not a scent i would wear, i will hold onto the sample dearly. For better or worse, this scent or “smell” is part of me and my childhood. I want to circle back to the imagery i’ve mentioned at the start. I can see how you can connect the scent to the atmosphere of an ancient temple but the particular scenario described by the user made me imagine a mental and physical state of numbness and false warmness. Something akin to being hypnotised or under the influence of a hallucinogenic substance. The scent of Rien Intense Incense is riggid and cold, being in theme with such a place but not in theme with the out-of-the-body numb state or experience that the imagery evoked for me personally.
The review below is funny af. This stuff is actually beastmode. If you love smokey scents, iris and leather then you will love this. It's has old school charm. It's a weird scent for the ultra niche freaks. It's wearable though. It's weird but not in an offensive way IMO. It has a leathery but fuzzy suede aspect to it. Buttery iris and aggressive incense. The moss makes it super masculine. Big Daddy vibes. Gilf vibes. Big D Dilf.
Glorious. Smells like Rien, of course, but where Rien is a bit fancy and clever- oh, pencil shavings! It smells a bit like No. 5, how charming! and so on - this is a great big cheery obese slobbering idiot, running at you with an equally massive wobbly natural rubber dildo and plans for the next 12 hours. Everything’s huge and fighting for space, it might set off sensitive fire alarms and it’ll absolutely give fake headaches to all the sensitive souls who still subscribe to miasma theory or whatever it is they believe. Rien probably smells nicer, truth be told, but this is more fun; if Rien is Ren, meet priapic goth Stimpy.
Rien on steroids. And Rien is already a pretty muscular beast. I personally love reeking of burnt tyres and petrol whilst walking around a cathedral. I appreciate many don’t. Definitely not a safe blind purchase.
