Cabochard Eau de Parfum 2019

Oh, this girl is something else. She keeps her linen crisp and clean, she refreshes herself with a spritz of Chanel No.19 in the morning and then she loves to enjoy a cigarette in her lush greenhouse while reading Kafka. She puts on her leather jacket, tousles her hair and puts on a red lipstick, ready to conquer the world simoly by being herself. This perfume is pure charisma and a reminder that, unlike trends, good taste and class will always be in style.

Idk what it is in the first maybe 30 seconds... civet? It goes away very fast into a nice classic scent. but the first 30 seconds tho, sheeesh.

Down history lane #9 - Cabochard Let's get one thing straight, i am as conservative as they come. Call me a bigot but i guess here in Eastern Europe life gives us enough of a beating that thankfully we don’t worry about the woke, first world nonsense...i mean problems, atleast not yet. With that said, without intending to sound sexist, i noticed that if we go back in time, many women’s perfumes smelt more “manly” then many of today’s fragrances destined for guys. This got me intrigued about some of these legendary creations and it was one of the reasons why i felt compelled to smell some of the better known ones. Other then their sheer impact and inspiration they bestowed upon the world of perfumery, its why i started my “Down history lane” series of reviews. Cabochard by Gres was Germaine Émilie Krebs a.k.a. Madame Gres’ signature perfume, launched in 1958. A short wikipedia search taught me that she was a coutourier with a background in sculpting. Her fashion style is known to combine sophisticated, classic elegance with cut-outs that placed the wearer’s skin in evidence but she also employed hellenic influences thanks to her experience in sculpting. Another surprising factor with many of these historic perfumes is that despite being affordable, quality wise they do not betray their pricetags in any way and that is quite apparent now with Cabochard. This is another one in the line of perfumes destined for ladies that allegedly employ darker and dare i say manly elements and i was curious if i myself would feel comfortable with it. Indeed, Cabochard employs some, lets call them “less lady-like” elements, atleast when compared to modern trends and cookie-cutter definitions of what constitutes as feminine notes and accords. Despite the deeper base made up of leather, oakmoss and patchouli, it is still a feminine leaning perfume. The base is what i would describe as mature but its not thick or heavy enough to distract from the fact that its a women’s perfume. Then there is a floral layer that completes it, sitting above this darker foundation. This floral accord is deceptive to me, at times it feels like Rose, other times its Jasmine and once again its a mature interpretation of florals, which i enjoy. Cabochard feels special and meaningful to me and in a way it describes a proper lady from every perspective. The darker, deeper base is the soul and the inner voice that dictates the mature behaviour whilst the floral top is the outside appearance, the clothing, makeup and stylistic choices. Cabochard to me is a reference Chypre with prominent florals and together with Etruscan Water by Francesca Bianchi they would be the ones i'd showcase if i tried to explain to someone what a Chypre is. Going back to the quality of ingredients and composition, i’d like to add a disclaimer because my impression might be skewed since im using small 1ml dabber samples so the application quantities are subtle. Still, Cabochard feels like a perfume i would mention in the same sentence with the likes of Portrait of a Lady, Chanel No. 5 and other creations of these magnitude. Considering that those two are considered titans of perfumery in terms of elegance, quality and sophistication, its a high praise to put an affordable perfume like Cabochard amongst them. One could be inclined to negatively label it as a product of its time and i wouldn’t necessarily disagree but then again, if you find classic elegance, meaningful and mature things as “old fashioned” then yes, you will find Cabochard dated aswell. Me? If i met and dated a woman who’s signature is Cabochard, i knew that i met someone who is an anchor and pillar in life and i’d expect a relationship that would last to the end.

I find this perfume overbearing on its own but recently I layered it with zara moonlight whisper intense ( which I find overly sweet). But the combination it's simply amazing !

contrary to what I wrote beneath the parfum, now I find this rendition of 2019 a wonderful perfume. and both these forms of Cabochard in perfume from 1959 and this Edp (2019) derive from the concept of Bertrand Chant (1927-1987). "still in 1974 I could buy, and did, Grès's Cabochard in a fabulous box with 'dusting powder', with spectacular abstract tigerprint on the carton. if anything contained some kind of old formula, it was this powder. and it was good, very present. austere, unusual, feminine, (or masculine), of a naughty kind. that was the best Cabochard, plus any versions after that. then now (2019) we have this Edp. in all sincerity I find Dusitas 'le Sillage Blanc' a better rendition of the original perfume then I find this variant. it is not bad but when spritzed on, I think 'Oh the powder'; 'Oh Sillage Blanc'.....". yet nevertheless it offers such clear imprint of this notorious perfume. you can definitely smell the Galbanum, Aldehydes & Sage coming forward with decisive Aplomb. if you have some knowledge about 'Cabochard' it helps in forming an opinion. yesterday it struck me that the Sigarette sensation settles immediately while also being present as distinctive note. the Flowers here one smells when the Initial stages are still dwindling, then the Ylang, Jasmine & Rose are crisply felt. it's character of Stern Chypre comes to the fore full force. Leather, Oakmoss & Patchouli give this characteristic perfume a Rugged Backbone and the Sandelwood delivers plush Opulence. all in all this rendition of Cabochard Eau de parfum is a worthy Blueprint of a Legend. I am glad to still have this Neo Bottle !

Found this in my aunt’s closet and it honestly smells very old-school, just like her. It’s not a bad fragrance at all, but it has a very vintage kind of scent that may not be for everyone.

Not nearly as offensive as I would have thought by the reviews. I ordered it, but got scared while waiting when I read more of them. I get an image in my mind of a boquet, left in an old closet, next to leather shoes and a suitcase, but in all the right ways. It's so classy and smooth. It smells both fresh and aged at the same time, a quite complex scent.

The opening of this and the modern Aramis Aramis have a very similar scent It is not the best, but definitely can be used as a masculine fragrance. For the price it's worth it even though it is not my particular taste

I blind bought this a while back with high hopes but all I got was a microsecond of soapy floral immediately followed by a punch of what I can only discribe as thick black smoke and ash tray. Offensively bitter. I tried it a couple times over the past year or two but no improvement. Then I tried it again last night and surprisingly I didn't hate it. That bitter ash tray smell had somehow mellowed into something more leathery and woody. The soapy floral seemed more present and maybe even a bit sweeter, and the fragrance smelled more complex and balanced than it did previously. I just sprayed it again about an hour ago. I'm starting to detect a slight spiciness that I had not noticed before. I'm still not sure if I "love" this fragrance, but I am certainly intrigued by it.

Femmehilary is completely right, there is something about this formulation that is just so addicting. I love love love dousing myself with Cabochard. It's as cheap as chips so I just spray spray spray away. Its so much fun to use throughout the day!!!😍😍

Oh W O W! This is classy and unique. I held off buying this for so long because of the reviews - I should remember that fragrance is subjective . Bursts out of the bottle with a brightness, settles to a deeper more mossy floral - Id say its very unisex. There is something I smell that I cant quite put my finger on and its not in the notes - whatever it is it makes me want to spray it more and more. Very retro scent but easily wearable today. IMO you'd need to be a confident more mature wearer to pull it off. SO happy I bought this <3

Oh my lord. It is as if the brief for this perfume was to repel people putting them off after a joyless night of partying, drinking and smoking waking up on a grey day smelling of stale cigarettes and wanting to die. This has been the worst perfume I have ever tried. Was very attracted by the design of the bottle. Never realised it would be so off putting. Stale sage at best. Lasted two weeks before getting rid. Wrong/faulty batch?

beatrixrussell I also could not wear it immediately after receiving it, it smelled very soapy and dated. Now I love it! The soapy notes are mostly from aldehydes. Please hang on to your bottle and try it again next year during fall, because it ages very well. The aldehydes start to disappear and get friendlier and the rest of the notes develop into a mellower, rounder, almost sweeter perfume, the florals add a nice touch and make it more polished. I do think that this perfume suits women over 30 the best, it's for people who know what they want, focussed, self-driven, hard working and ambitious. It is the definition of elegance and determination.

I was excited to try this, I'd heard amazing things. Thankfully it was only like $17 because I just can't see myself wearing this. I'm getting the leather and sandalwood which I love but the top and middle notes have almost a soapy scent to them, maybe it's the jasmine and rose I'm associating with soap? Either way the entire combination reminds me of my grandma, who wore White Diamonds. I think it's just a really vintage/retro fragrance. I don't hate it but I don't love it either.

It smells like when you go to the opera and all the elderly patrons' colognes, perfumes, and various other smells are all hitting you at once. No thanks.

It's bad. I had never worn a chypre before this one. Wasn't even pronouncing the word correctly. But I've learned since then. I have also tried Cabo 2019 EDT, Cabo 90s vintage, and the very original unopened Cabo parfum from 1959. The original is an incredible experience. Because I have tried many iterations of Cabo, I can confidently say that the 2019 Cabo EDP is a cheap imitation. The low price belies cheap quality. It smells cheap, synthetic, and old. I would say the vintage ones are unisex and a unique experience. Cabo 2019 is firmly in the old grandma category. It starts off smelling like laundry detergent or dial soap. Blech. The green element screeches and smells synthetic. Not crystalline champagne aldehydes, just sharp and unpleasant, almost sour. It's loud on the opening. It's missing the tobacco and leather elements. The floral elements smell completely artificial. Like a somewhat rotting bouquet in an old bathtub filled with weedkiller. It stinks! It lasts about 4 hours on me. It becomes a skin scent after about 2.5. I guess you could say the dry down is okay... but I found it unimpressive, especially compared to the original. What irritates me most about this scent, which I tried in multiple ways over multiple days, is that it has no heart. No spunk. No fire. No kick. Not like the original. In trying to "modernize" it, they made it seem even older than it is. They've flattened all of the original's daring elements. Pumped it full of artificial synthetic chemical copies of the real ingredients they used to use. They've edited out the castoreum, civic, tobacco, oakmoss, and more. The original had florals that smelled as if the actual flower was crushed, distilled, and mixed into the fragrance. The florals in the 2019 feel like a copy of a copy of an idea of a dead, wilted flower packaged in a febreeze home spray. It's just tragic. This scent lacks courage, presence, glamour, style, and the obstinacy it was named after.

I find it extremely odd that the contributor below, "Fija", would complain so bitterly that Cabochard is "not Gourmand, it's not Spicy, it's not Amber perfume"... when nothing in the notes breakdown (or for that matter any of the myriad descriptions of this 50+ year old perfume) mentions anything about it being gourmand, spicy, or amber. 🤔

It opens leaning feminine, flowery, and it dries down to a masculine scent to my nose, reminiscent of my family members that wore Aramis during the years - maybe people that had strong feminine characters in their midst that wore Cabochard will have their experience affected to the other side. For me, the more feminine opening is quick and the remaining of the experience I consider unisex leaning masculine. There's not a lot of sweetness but the florals are there all the time, altough more balanced with the dark/earthy base after the first 5 minutes. This is a very interesting fragrance, it smells gorgeous, and I was not aware it existed until very recently - and that this classic came way before Aramis by the same perfumer. Worth the smell if you want a classy dark-leaning Chypre. Also worth to smell the Aramis if you don't know it - altough the current formulation of Aramis would benefit much from a reboot like this 2019 Cabochard apparently benefited from. As for my personal usage, I'm still testing it, but I will probably be spraying me some Cabochard EDP some good minutes before going out - and spraying Aramis over it a couple of minutes before I go out to see if it improves the performance of the current formulation of Aramis. Maybe it doesn't even need the Aramis over to still smell masculine on me, we shall live and see. Update: Cabochard under the shirt and Aramis on the neck and extremities work very nice together. Cabochard lasts ages up close and the Aramis projects for a couple of hours

It's a truly TRAGIC scent☠️☠️☠️ I've never fave such low opinion about any perfumes in my 30+ life The notes & colour of the bottle suggest something feminine like Shalimar by Dior or classic Golden Gourmand perfumes. It's the opposite. Its ODOUR as I cannot call it differently resembles something like an extremely strong Menthol-ish vibe like Toilet Gel + leather . No other notes detected. Impossible to wash off the skin even using creamy peeling and shower gel😭 evaporates after 12 hrs No Man would like that on a woman for sure. It's not Gourmand, it's not Spicy, it's not Amber perfume. It's a shocking composition that makes other passengers leave the bus when you enter

Evokes bugspray without smelling like bug spray. Aldeyhydic, bitter, green and dry would be adequate descriptors. The drydown is literally just dry leather, like a jacket that hasn't been worn in a while. There are better galbanum chypres (e.g fidji by guy laroche) and there are better leather scents. I hate this.

I've had this perfume for four days, and have worn it every day since I bought it. I can't decide what I think, though, because every day it's completely different. Today it's just lovely - old school and sophisticated, but in a light, manageable way. Tomorrow it might smell like bratwurst and beans, or crab grass and iodine. I'm just going to wait and see.

Reviewing a bottle of the perfume from 2023.Cabochard Eau de Parfum 2019 was re-launched in 2019. Originally from 1959. This is a suprisingly excellent green aromatic chypre. Cabochard opens with a waft of synthetic smelling powdery aldehydes. Within a few minutes the galbanum and sage peak through. The florals are subtle making this unisex by todays standards. By 15 minutes this has changed into a wonderful mossy patchouli leather fragrance very reminiscent of Bandit (OG) and Le Sillage Blanc. If you can get past the aldehydes (which IMO should be toned down) this is very well done. Quality- very good Unisex Performance-excellent I have tried many "classic perfume" reformulations and am usually disappointed as they typically are diluted and butchered shadows of their former glorious selves. This is a rare exception. Furthermore, that this can be sold at a ridiculously low price in a decent quality bottle makes me wonder why so many houses are charging over $300 for mediocrity and citing rising costs as an excuse. 8/10

Wow Wow Wow this is a big alydehydic power house! Strong not for the weak at heart! Very 80’s 90’s type of scent! there is a time and place for this mainly cooler weather! Winter is the best time for this in my opinion. Lasts forever and sillage is definitely there! this is a great power house fragrance you should have at least one in your collection. Excellent for the price!

The same direction with Guerlain Shalimar eau de parfum, but more chypre, like a retro ode cologne. Trying to get used to this one..not easy. Longevity and sillage are shockingly good..hard to wash off..

I definitely enjoy this for work or more serious settings, but I also find it changes my mood a little to be more stern. It smells of clean aldehydes, moss, with a herbal sage leather undertone. I'm also wearing it in the dead of summer (I'm a rebel lol) , and it doesn't choke me out in the heat like a lot of Chypres can. It will be interesting to see how it feels in the chill,damp climate the UK has for 80% of the year

Yo. I just got this. It is EXACTLY the vintage smell I was hoping for. But it is a scent that is A LOT and NOT SHY, and probably not a safe blind buy unless you know you like some of these wacky notes. I got mine for 20$, so you could just go for it. I have an old sample and I think it turned a long time ago. When the sample was new (1980s or 1990s?) I remember liking it. I was a strange youth. Today I finally got a bottle! I don't know anything about the reformulations. I have the 2019 version. I don't know if it smells like the OG, but this version is definitely the scent I was expecting. --- This is very mid century. Weird, but I like it. I think. Smells like formaldehyde, flowers, leather and even smoke somehow. Like a dusty leather booth at an old bar with some flowers on top. I haven't worn it yet, but this is amazing, I can't wait to wear this out and trigger people with it's most excellent vintage smell. ----I have now worn this a few times. Being newly fragrance obsessed and discovering some things about my 'body chemistry' I have come to a theory...iris and orris notes turn 'cadaver' smell on my skin. I have noticed this with Revenge of Lady Blanche I and some others. I really wanted to like this. The formaldahyde smell I initially thought was cool is not cool on my body unless I am trying to smell like death. Oh well.
