Halston Z14

This is for the current formulation, on my skin. Also, this is the same day I received it, so it may mature over time. Very lemony with hints of cinnamon underneath. Bright, clean lemon notes. Inoffensive kitchen cleaner lemony smell, in a good way. The cinnamon follows subtly. Personally, I can't see myself wearing this very much. But it does make me want to smell the older formulations that had the woodsier mossier notes. Sprayed on a tester strip, it stays overwhelmingly lemon.

Buy this for your dad, he’ll love it.

Smells like a beautiful, clean holiday mens soap youd gift the important men in your life at christmas. I will always have a bottle of this.

Down history lane #8 - Halston Z-14 Halston Z-14 is a fragrance that came to my attention after Frederic Malle mentioned it in an interview where he said that it was the first fragrance he bought for himself. That is only one reason why it made me curious, the other reason being that it was allegedly a similar scent to Roja Apex which i own and love. Im a sucker for deep, mature, woody, forest-y resinous green fragrances. These sort of scents conveyed something more then meets the eye to me, like a return to nature and the primal things in life. A return to something meaningful, primordial and everlasting. Something that was there before and will be after. Halston Z-14 is a well known scent from 1974 that belongs in this mature woody category so naturally i seeked such an atmosphere out of it. Oldschool masculine perfumes often leave me respectfully unimpressed because they are mostly funneled down in a barbershopy, soapy or simple aromatic direction. Smelling Z-14 is a different experience and an infinetly better one for me. Rather then going down the same-old same-old barbershop direction most classic masculine scents do, it manifests as a citrusy spicy woody profile. So far nothing sounds out of the ordinary but these aren’t the usual sharp citruses and harsh spices. Instead of basic soapy green accords im getting bold cinnamon and a generous amount of sparkling sweet lemon, giving me a tea-like impression. In some of my reviews i said that the cinnamon often used in perfumery doesn’t behave or smell like real cinnamon powder. Thats not the case with Z-14 because here the cinnamon is the most realistic i’ve smelt so far and i love that. The only thing “breaking” the immersion of real tea is the lemon itself because you don’t really see lemon sparkling and fizzing in tea as in a carbonated drink for example. Still, make no mistake, the lemon fits the fragrance perfectly and dare i say it wouldn’t work without it. Its just the realistic image of tea that is affected. In conclusion, even though Z-14 isn’t exactly a foresty scent, its one that calms me down and makes me feel grounded. It gives me that mature and meditative feeling that i enjoy very much. Speaking of Roja Apex, i do not find them similar because Apex is more in line with traditional deep woody perfumery whilst Z-14 is all about the sweet lemon and the cinnamon. I wouldn’t find them redundant by any means, nor would one replace the other. Performance wise, it has some kick in the initial phases but being an Eau de Cologne its bound to be shortlived. Scent quality wise, if this came in a niche bottle with a high pricetag i wouldn’t question it for a second. Maybe its my own perception but its THAT good and for the price it can be found, Z-14 is worth its weight in gold. If there was a proper EDP version of this scent, it would quickly rise to my top perfumes ever. A stunning cinnamon scent and i foresee getting a bottle once i make more room on my shelf that is already overflowingly full, or i break the mental barrier and start another shelf hehe.

I have a super old batch of this from my dad, the kind that would linger minutes after he left the house. I've since been through bottles of this and the latest bottle is very similar. With that said after experience with other bottles, they take time to mature. Now they DEFINITELY perform...even this new bottle performs well, I even (as rare as it seems) received a compliment hours after. Newer bottles tend to have a more cypress/ green forwardness to them but after maturing the classic cinnamon becomes more forward. Yeah formulations change but all in all it's still that classic scent. Always a high recommendation.

When the weight of uncertainty settles in the quiet of night, I turn to Halston Z-14. Its rich blend of leather and spice acts as a steadfast anchor, transmuting my anxieties into resolve. By morning, the scent has done its work: I awaken not merely rested, but armored in confidence, ready to command the day. Smells like there's a solution to any problem.

All the men that I loved like my late husband and good guys, wore this it reminds me of discos, good times, art receptions, confident men, sexy men. So I just scored a vintage bottle for myself oh my God! This is wonderful. Takes me back still smells fresh and fly!

This was my high school scent. As an adult, it's no coincidence that I was a huge fan of TF Italian Cypress. Now that it's fairly long gone, I bought a big bottle of Z-14. Life is good again.

Does not end like it begins. Once the cinnamon burns off, holy cow it's nice. And all I have is the EA aftershave version, too.

Spicy, Soft Leather? I can see what people mean when they say that it is somewhat medicinal. When it dries down it gains a leathery note at the end that i quite enjoy. I first heard about this while watching someone on YT talk about Polo Green variants (a review for cologne intense) and he mentioned that Polo Green and Italian Cypress were influenced by this Halston Z14. I looked into it, saw that it shares nearly 85% of the ingredients in Polo Green and bought two 200ml bottles. The scent is intimate. This is not at all a scent that screams loudly and will climb into another person's nose a whole post code away. It is beautiful and simple. Hard to smell for me after 5 mins of initial spray but I still like it. I cant fully judge its sillage as I cant smell it without coming close, so I would say Intimate to Moderate. Drydown is easier to smell. I think there the real secret is layering this AND Polo Green. It is a decent combination and feels very plantlike. I can also see a process of, Polo Green in the morning and then this in the afternoon. In fact, I am calling it now: I will treat this like Polo Green Sport. Wearing this after the gym is a great shout. I haven't smelled Italian Cypress but this is a good one for a man's collection. Honestly, every working career man should have a bottle. So safe, so clean...so fresh. (but not a fresh scent. very different). Also, do not be stingy with your sprays. SPRAY IT ALL OVER YOURSELF. This is good to decant, have in your work bag, gym bag, travel bag, etc. I love it. It is a touch hard for me to smell but this is super blind buy safe. Value for money is crazy.

This has always come across as a spicy, woody oriental to me. This was very ahead of it's time for 1975-76. Nothing else smelled like this. I love the slight sweetness the tonka brings. Cinnamon is the main spice. I smell some florals as well. The drydown is sweet, musky incense.

Italian Stallion Guido juice. I love it. Super potent. Cinnamon and power!!!! Have your gold medallion and Italian Horn ready!!

It's awesome. Lemon cinnamon and patchouli punch on the first sprays. Spicy green citrus at this point as the cypress and basil creep in, with the woods and light florals. People smell you and react nicely. 6 hours in the nice warm comforting slightly bar soapy greener and mild floral old spice/Cardin PM drydown of musky spicy ambery resinous leather kicks in. Bright opening and long duration at around 7-8 hours. Classic 70's vibe and still wearable today. Its strong, pleasant and develops nicely throughout the 10ish hour duration. Not bad for £20! 8/10

Oh this is good. The bitter lemon and bergamot mix with that cypress and hot damn I feel like a zaddy already. There's some extra green and basil in the open, but the cypress and lemon carry it. Moving into the heart I get some cinnamon, minty patchouli, jasmine, floral (geranium probably), MOAR cypress. Strutting into the base and ready for an early bird dinner special I get expanded patchouli, some oakmoss, cedar, and a somewhat smoky leathery tonka musk. This is really solid guys and can be had for dirt cheap. Who cares if it is "dated"? It is really well balanced and an awesome; it is an incredible bargain alternative to TF Italian Cypress.

PRO-TIP: BUY the vintage "cologne" in the "splash" (no sprayer). Use a small perfume funnel and transfer the fluid into an empty Demeter bottle if you got 'em. Or any small atomizer glass bottle you can find. THANK ME LATER and not all at once. I'm fairly sure the "splash" is old and out-dated ? Which is the way I like it! I have a huge collection of perfumes -- all over the map -- but I love to revisit THIS once a month! It's so basic YET has an actual personality. (Cinnamon + cypress + leather should NOT work - but it does ) . IF you are a younger dude and wanna get into OLD SCHOOLS - like if your grand pappy worked the door at Studio 54 or Xenon ; This is a cheapie to explore. Longevity and heft is pretty good on the older bottles. This one enchants me when I get tired of other "man perfumes" in my collection. GRADE: B+ . BABUBRN (buying a back up bottle right now) ! P.S. This and cold weather = MARVELOUS !

It seems like i hadn't reviewed this. Anyway, here i go: Halston Z14 entered my life in late 2022. I was dating a girl who funnily was a student of my dad (Who gives classes at a music college) and i recall going to a supermarket to buy a few things. I remember scents i was digging back in the day like Brut and Versace Eros. But i tried this in a small parfumerie beside it and i bought it a few days later. My initial impression was, a heavily mechanic - alike, leather - based scent with a ton of woods and a quite aggressive first hit. I described this as being like a jab from a boxer when i first tried the opening. Citruses and herbals / green notes along the bright cypress note hit strongly. I get a floral note which reminds me of funerals, i think that's the gardenia, quite nice, actually. Strong cinnamon, though never overwhelming. It's detectable but not heavy or disgusting. And the focal point of this for me is the wood base along the leather accord, which i find close to aromatic suede, quite a typical way of working a leather note back in the day. I also get the typical patchouli / rose combo, the leather tannins from birch tar giving a pipe tobacco impression like in Polo Green and the ton of oakmoss and musk (In this case, a nice, slightly funky musk ketone or similar) getting it pretty much superglued to the skin and fabric. For an EDC, this has an astounding performance. I get some 6 - 8 hours on skin easily, if sprayed on clothing, it can project around a day later if you sweat and warm up. Clearly not for kids or people looking for "compliments", though, you still get them. Because that's what's truly valuable in life, putting yourself as the first and being confident about it, instead of living for others and wearing what others like. And as a friend said recommending this fragrance: "There's only one thing worse than being deceased: Being deceased in life."

I like it. Woody, Aromatic and Citrus heavy scent. In the opening there is a lot of Cinnamon, but that takes a backseat quickly. Cooler weather day or night. A bit older gentleman.

Bought this in a batch of old-school cheapies (included Drakkar Noir, Azzaro Pour Homme, and Issey Miyaki L'eau D'issey) and this one stole the show! Very nice scent...spicier than I expected and I while I would put it in the same vein as Polo green, this has a sweeter vibe and almost has a licorice scent to it (which I love). Despite being extremely reformulated, the staying power is not too bad either...definitely hangs on clothes much longer than skin. Feels better suited for colder temperatures...I liked this so much I wore it to work the next day. UPDATE: My wife literally just texted me to ask what I sprayed on this morning (I get up way before her to go to work) because it smelled so good when I sprayed it on.

(Review of an early 90s vintage) I remember being a young teen and walking into my grandparents’ home where it truly struck me for the first time that they hadn’t ever redecorated any part of their home in my then-short lifetime and likely hadn’t for a few decades because everything was… brown. The wooden furniture? Brown. The carpets? Brown. The couch with the terrible plastic covering? Brown. Dining room furniture and everything in it? Brown. The walls? Well at least the wallpaper was only mostly brown. Z-14 couldn’t be more of that era even if it tried. Christ on a bike, this perfume is 70’s Americana brown. Even the citrusy top is brown! Bergamot is given ample doses of anisic basil and aromatic cypress to create a very bitter, herbal, and resinous presentation. The heart is very spicy with plenty of cool woody coriander, warm and parched cinnamon, and enough top soil-like and peppery patchouli to create a whole other perfume. Brown. The base is an amber of earthy tonka, leathers, and benzoin - but! There is oakmoss, and a lot of it! But, uh, the oakmoss hasn’t had any rain for a long time so now it’s totally dried up and… brown. Honestly, I laugh every time I wear Z-14. It takes itself so seriously yet it is completely oblivious to its surroundings - e.g. unaware of this thing called “time” and that it’s stuck in its own. Do you have one of those friends, who wants to be very serious about something, but what they end up saying just makes you cackle? Despite not being on the same wavelength, I love the company. Z-14 is built incredibly well and smells of excess, raw masculine power, and sex. You’re going to feel like a million greenbacks wearing this, and you will definitely get noticed - for better or worse, perhaps laughed at for the serious statement. Laugh along.

I got a vintage bottle Not sure how old it is but the box was almost like paper from all the time that passed I never tried it before and the notes pyramid wasn’t interesting but out of historical value and the good price I got it And it was wonderful Performance was good and projection was ok It’s a man’s scent no doubt about it specifically the cypress is the strongest No cinnamon at all Plus a dampness that is probably from the oakmoss Let me add it wears beautifully in cold weather

Halston Z14 is a blast from the past, leather, cinnamon with a touch of Oakmoss (it has been turned down), but still you can perceive it in the background, spices and wood; obviously the fragrance like the rest from that era, have been reformulated (how many times, I couldn't say) but it has suffered the infamous "restrictions" like its siblins Polo (1978 original green bottle), Aramis (1966 original), Pour monsieur (1972 Pierre Cardin), Quorum (1981), Agua Brava (1968), Givenchy Gentleman (1974 original), Bogart (signature) and so on. Halston Z14 keeps some of its characteristics and image, despite the changes in its formula; the cologne smells pretty good, manly and solid. The longevity is good, and for the price, nobody can complain; I think this fragrance is a great acquisition if you are into mature, solid, and very manly scents. Those men who appreciate aftershaves/colognes from a glorious past can wear Halston Z14 with the confidence of a mature, very masculine scent for the sigma-retrosexual male.

I just glanced at Google and saw two retailers selling 8 ounce bottles of this for $20. Before that I glanced at the other reviews and read some complaints, one person suggested that there are multiple versions by different manufacturers in rotation. Before that I glanced at the "reminds me of"s...Tom Ford, Roja, etc. Sung Homme is there with way fewer thumbs ups because Sung Homme is crap and this juice is legendary and for good reason. Before that I glanced at the notes and I get all of those plus a bit of licorice (anise but with the resins may as well be licorice and that with a couple other overlapping notes and the classy vibe of both is what causes Eau Sauvage to briefly drift through the imagination but as others have said they are totally different). But seriously consider this isn't a middle eastern clone of a popular designer it is a made from scratch original from decades ago and the reminds me of here is loaded with heavy hitters. And as others have said the compliments are plentiful. One thing I love about it is that there is leather but it is really soft and subtle and not sour at all. The last thing I wish to emphasize is that yes just like nearly every other juice that exists a couple weeks to a couple of months of oxidation will drastically improve the clarity and quality of this fine fragrance. Personally I think it is good out of the box especially compared to many newer brands but I've had my nearly empty bottle for over a year and it has become truly amazing. It can be worn in the warmer months (as I do occasionally - if I go too long without a wearing I start to get a wistful nostalgia) but in the winter it is just magical.

I think I found the perfect time to wear Halston Z-14: cooler weather. It just seems to work better with my skin chemistry. I've gotten compliments EVERYDAY when I wear it. In Krogers, in the doctor's office, at church, at work, with friends, by total strangers.

this bottle is absolutely stunning and i can't believe more people aren't talking about it! designed by THE elsa peretti in her sculptural, minimilastic style. holding it feels like holding an incredibly sophisticated worry stone.

Spicy Citrus Fougere to me, not very Leather, it's a great energy boost in the morning. This juice is very good, performance is not great but splash it on and be happy.

Of course I'm gong to compare Z-14 an 1-12 together. If Halston and Co. went to such trouble to pair them up to the point of confusion, the least I can do is appreciate their interactive effect (...or untangle the mess). Z-14 opens with resinously green cypress oil, bergamot, lemon, and the strong note of cinnamon already evident. As the cypress and lemon burn off, the duet between bergamot and cinnamon persists to becomes the main chord. Of course all this rests on a complex bed of (light) vetiver, patchouli, coriander, and assorted woods, plus oakmoss. In all that, there seems to be something people find leathery, but leather is at most a minor effect, in my opinion. Also, it seems the linalool in the oakmoss combines with some woody-aromatic aspects in the other notes to create a the smell of lavender. Presumably this is a phantom note, unless its just not listed. In any case, it did add further confusion, since 1-12 is the one that supposedly contains some lavender. The composition of 1-12 seems to be one of harmonic opposition between traditional men's barbershop notes (lemon, bergamot, lavender, carnation accord) and strong green aromatics (galbanum, pine, juniper berry). The overall result makes 1-12 the more brightly green of the two scents, though still with spicy sweetness and mossy woods in the background. Overall a chord of galbanum, lemon, and pine leads the charge. Both 1-12 and Z-14 explore similar terrain (with different notes) in the vast regions of green-aromatic-spicy-woods, ...and I do like them both, though 1-12 has pulled a bit ahead with its invigorating intensity of citric-greenness. However, to be fair, Z-14 may win out for persistence with its more substantial block of base notes. Also the Elsa Peretti bottles are just striking and timelessly beautiful; enduring classics of modern minimalism. Even if you don't like the perfume, there is always the object d'art value to consider. I got one bottle as a 100ml and the other as 50, for the best display effect.

Yoooo😵! Im not sure if my bottle needs to "Maturate" or what the heck is going on, but Halston Z-14 now smells ABSOLUTELY NOOOTHING like how it did back in the day! Now this smells almost EXACTLY like Alfred Sung Homme or Irish Spring soap-bar-Soap!!! This is CA-RRRAZZY! I get ZERO Cypress or any of the sharpness it once had! Wow! I remember that before the Cypress was front and center along with an astringent citrus and woodiness, but this really smells like Irish Spring Soap now, just like Alfred Sung Homme.

The cinnamon isn't too evident on me, which is surprising. It opens up with the pine, leather, and a fresh soapiness. It dries down to being a calmer, less sharp Head & Shoulders shampoo, with citrus and cedar dancing around it's edges like homeboys pogoing and circling a fight in a Denny's parking lot. Which is fine. That shampoo is no good for your scalp, but I've always liked the smell a lot. Far less tired than leaving a 3am hangout to navigate drunken untermenschen half-assedly brawling while you walk to your car.

Amazing how many comments this fragrance has garnered, and for good reason; it's still selling. Still relevant and relaxing. Yes, it's changed, but in a good way. After 6-10 liberal sprays, I'm good for a solid 8 hours. Yes, it's does last. Cinnamon bomb with lemon. Very noticeable, easy to wear, non offensive. Then as it smooths out, the leathery pine smoothes in. For the price; unbeatable. If this were labeled Chanel, Tom Ford or Clive Christian; it'd cost well over $250 a bottle. So, what's that tell us? It's all in the name packaging. Do yourselves a favor, buy two bottles, spray liberally, and bask in its easy glow.
