Lagerfeld Classic

This 'Classic' is a curious conundrum of complexity and contradiction. Lagerfeld released something bizarre here, but it is quite refined in its bizarreness. For a long time it was the only masculine herbal-aldehydic tobacco & amber chypre around. ...and not just any herbs: tarragon and clary!? Now there probably is an obscure niche equivalent, but I still don't know what that would be. I suppose it was popular 'back in the day', ...but to me this seems too uniquely odd to ever be dated. If anything, I want to think of this as a timelessly 'new' solution to all the 21st Century clichés I'm smelling too often these days. At this point, the future needs to run to catch up with the past. In full truth, I was reminded of this today while sampling a vintage bottle of Perry Ellis for Men. No, their scent profiles are not that similar. Lagerfeld Classic's opening of aldehydes and tarragon is fully a thing unto itself. ...But the soft amber-meets-chypre complexity of both did suggest a stylistic connection.

This is Aqua Velva musk in a spray bottle and IT IS WONDERFUL. I HOPE off my skin it gets a little more powdery either during the dry down or when I get some air in the bottle. Man, its just so good. I am 32. 🤘

This to me feels like the "male counterpart" of Shalimar way more than habit rouge is. It's a powdery oriental with touches of heavier notes like tobacco and oakmoss, its brilliant.

I'm a woman and find this unisex. I wear it often in autumnal weather!! If you love aromatics like basil & anise as much as I do, you might love the tarragon, which could be the top notes many are describing as harsh or weird (I find it neither.) The incensey-tobacco heart and orange pomander brightness only add to the ambery charm. At the family reunion, you'll see Lagerfeld with Eau de Rochas and Chergui.

Take mandarin peels, put them in a black tea, sweeten slightly and add lots and lots of cloves. Sip it in an old mahogany study with lots of old books in the bookshelves. That is exactly the impression behind this fragrance. I've been wearing Lagerfeld classic since about 2007. It is a complex fragrance, can be overpowering, and very masculine. The social impression behind this fragrance is that of a traditional gentleman. Something someone's father would wear to the club. Downsides: Top notes. If you sample this at a department store, you won't buy it. It smells weird in the first minutes. Because of the harsh top notes, it is somewhat difficult to wear. The first splash of it is simply unpleasant. The top notes have always given me a slight headache. I can't just splash it and go hop on a crowded bus: people around would faint. It is just very, very strong in the beginning. The top notes are jasmine, clove and some lemon peel with tarragon, yet quite artificial in their tone. Positives: Complexity. There are so many different levels of notes in this fragrance. Possibly due to lots of ingredients. Once it dries down, it is tamed and becomes the actual woody and spicy fragrance it is. It takes maybe 30+ minutes on the skin. The long notes are a sweet spicy sensation that reminds me of Christmas. The tonka bean and the spicy herbs appear. It is very "orange". Very long lasting, this is something that stays on for the whole day. The base notes feel natural: it is easy to imagine someone thinking "my father just naturally smells like this" if they ever wore this. It is close to impossible to layer or combine with other scents because of the complexity. You need to wear this out completely before you can add anything else. So, it's definitely still a keeper, and I will keep buying and using it. It is not my favourite fragrance of all time, and it doesn't compare with some more sofisticated perfumes that I admire and love. It is quite cheap in price. I started buying it when it was more expensive: I remember back in 2008 I had to pay more than €50 to €60 per bottle. Now I can get it discounted for less than €30.

For me purely a nostalgic buy. It super pleasant but it leans a bit soapy and feels a bit dated. A scent I see my father using when dressing up.

This is my dad's scent. That's all I can say. This is my dad in a bottle, never wore anything else. Absolutely love it.

Smells like Spiced Orange Tea steeped with Licorice Root. Overcast days of Autumn & Tweed suits. Oh shit I just spit a Bar ! LOL. One of the best.....

For reference, I’m 32. Lagerfeld Classic, to me, smells like a glass of Powdery Cream Soda with orange zest spritzed on top. Then you took that glass into a 1970’s lawyers office and let it age. The dry down adds spice and pulls back a little on the little bit of sweetness there is. By hour 4 you smell the masterpiece. It’s mature. It’s robust. A true fragrance lovers fragrance.

A fabulous fragrance. Orange and powdery notes with florals and some woods. Very potent, more like a good strength parfum in a beautifully designed bottle. An absolute classic from 1978 and still relevant today.

I had a vintage bottle. On application it felt like you were scorching the the hair in your nostrils. very animalic and very strong. Tried 2-3 times and always developed a headache. Not for me though I like other vintage powerhouse scents

Not a fan of the opening. It's a sharp, bitter orange peel that my nose doesn't like. After about an hour it transformed into a warm, familiar scent from my childhood. If you're old enough to remember the late 70's, you will definitely remember this. Pleasant and masculine, with an air of quiet authority. This is what the man in charge wears. He's fair but firm; seasoned and mature, and he never raises his voice. Perfect for those crisp, cool, Autumn days. Definitely not for everyone but give it a chance before you decide. It's complex and has a way of growing on you. I've gone from ok, to like, to strong like.

this morning I had the luck to stumble upon this perfume. I always regretted to not have been involved in KL Karl Lagerfeld for women (1983) and I understood this has become the Masculin penchant for that Ultra Feminine Perfume. I also remember Photo, but see now that this scent is launched in 1990. I loved 'Lagerfeld Pour Homme' immediately. the perfume is rather complex and clearly Masculine but at once also Feminine enough that I can wear it and radiate it. to make it more complex, I am a male, but homosexual with a Straight Twinbrother. I NEVER go out of the door wearing a Men's Scent. then I don't feel like myself. but this perfume is a wonderfully quasi- Floriental, a Chypre, perhaps a Fougère. all, simultaneously. it is marketed by Interparfums so I guess there are better, older versions. and I must say, I love this perfume but it doesn't come up. so it is apparently more subdued than it was at the time of its conception 1978. I shall abstain from the tempting gesture to pull the cap loose with the ring. we all know what then happens... what I smell the most is the midsection and the basenotes. the Greeneries and Fruits and Tarragon and Clary Sage go lost on me. perhaps in a couple of days. Rose, Orris, Jasmine, Amber, Vanilla, Tobacco I can all easily pick out. the woods, Sandel, Cedar, Oakmoss and Patchouli make a nice and sophisticated Base. after Cristalle and Mitsouko Extrait these last days the Moss is very much blended here. this is my experience.

Karl Lagerfeld Classic is a masterpiece. It's a unique scent that never grows boring. Despite being almost fifty years old, it does not smell dated at all. It's quite difficult to describe. Orange peel, powder, woods. The composition is obviously expertly crafted and I don't know how Ron Winnegrad managed to make this uplifting, but he did. Every time I wear this, it lifts my mood. A happy, wholesome perfume, if that makes sense. I paid €25 for 150 ml, which is insane value. I look forward to wearing this many more times and I expect I'll continue to enjoy this greatly for the rest of the time I have left on this planet. I'm closing with the performance. It's perfect. It lasts all day long and it keeps projecting like crazy. It's a 10/10 for me.

If it's good enough for Tony Montana, it's good enough for me. Say hello to my little fragrance. Aldehydic grassy sage and some lemony citrus in the open, moving into a stronger tobacco and irisy woods with background floral notes, ultimately settling in a very ambery and musky sweet vanilla moss. That tobacco doesn't fully dissipate even into deep dry down, creating that sweet tobacco mossy scent.

This is a nice, more vintage fragrance. From the bottle it smells more amber-y, but on skin it’s very green. At first it smells like a walk in a nature reserve, but then the dry down gets more complex with more accents on wood. Good for if you want to smell more mature/older than you actually are. Good for office, maybe even church.

I wore this in my teens and changed for some reason. Bought it again in 11/2024... it sat. Wore it the last 2 days... it is the same...it does smell great... it is unique...and I love it all over again. In the meantime, I have thousands of dollars in fragrances sitting on my shelf. I cant fathom anyone hating this. It's so easy and appealing to me. It projects, it lasts. and considering the compositional complexity... it smells simple. Simply NICE.

A more nuanced, well rounded, higher-end Jovan Musk. They’re different I know, but I’m just ball parking here. Citrus up front, ends powdery, warm and slightly spicy. Does not smell like Obsession. My only gripe is with the performance, which I found to be a bit disappointing. I’m not experiencing the same beastlyness that others seem to be, unfortunately.

Whilst not being a favourite in my collection, I cannot fault this. It does everything it aims to do effortlessly. A masterpiece. What I get from this is a very pleasant powdery, soapy, orange rind infused with some patchouli, tobacco, florals & musk to top it off. It smells very classy & elegant. I can see this being a good choice for more romantic occasions. Even in its modern formulation Lagerfeld Classic boasts incredible longevity with noticeable projection in the first few hours. On top of this it can be purchased for under £20. A true bargain. Whilst I may not reach for this one too often that doesn’t mean you won’t. Hell, if Al Pacino showered in this stuff daily (to get ‘into character’) during the filming of Scarface then that fact alone should be enough to convince you. Timeless. 7.5/10

Just bought a 150 ml bottle of this epic juice for 28 euros. An offer I couldn't refuse. What a wonderful sweet orange bergamot opening that goes to a beautiful spicy powdery tobacco amber with a beautiful sweetness. Wearing this for over 35 years and the smell has changed but the character is the same. And the performance is stellar. A strong projection in the first 4 hours and after that the fluid melts perfectly with my skin. This perfume sprayed on the right person is a compliment getter. Inter Parfums did an amazing good job on this one. The bottle is designed by master Karl himself and that makes this Classic a real piece of art in the world of fashion and perfumery.

Powerhouse Oriental Power! Orange and Powdery and Strong! Take no prisoners! Smells elegant and classy. My stepfather has all sorts of Lagerfeld at his house, all different grooming products, even talc which I doubt are available anymore. Probably just the edt.

I realy like this one the tobaco note is nice and its also not too heavy.

Just bought another bottle. This is a potent EDT. Soapy, powdery, floral with an orange vibe. Excellent performance. I've had parfums that are no where near to the potency of this. Comes in a beautifully designed bottle and classy box. I love this classic. In my top 10 ever.

Does. Not. Quit… Lagerfeld Classic certainly is “classic” in style. It’s the kind of scent that could only have originated in the late 1970s, and it lives in that age with no hesitation or ambivalence. On paper, the note breakdown looks perfectly respectable. You have bergamot, lemon, lavender, and clary sage up top; jasmine, rose, iris, cedar, and tobacco in the heart; and a base of amber, vanilla, musk, oakmoss, and sandalwood. A lot going on, to be sure, but nothing too wild. On skin and in the air, however, that tidy pyramid quickly becomes an engaging chaos. The opening gives you a brief whiff of dried orange peel-citrus and barbershop lavender, before tobacco, amber, and aldehydes kick the door down and start rearranging the furniture. There’s an oddly specific vibe that settles in after a few minutes. If you like it, it could be called musky and rich. If you don’t, well it’s like the unmistakable love child of sweat and talcum powder. The powdery iris and vanilla bring that old-school cosmetic dustiness, while the herbal notes, tobacco, and moss warm things up. Add a faint aura of phantom cigarette smoke and polished wood, and you’ve basically bottled the air from one of the most interesting fern bars of the era. Performance-wise, Lagerfeld Classic has absolutely no concept of personal space. Projection is very, very confident, and longevity is more like a lifestyle. Fragrances of this era were known for supreme staying power, but few of them have kept up that level of endurance. Lagerfeld Classic is one that has. Many fragrances won’t make it past lunchtime now. This stuff will outlast some relationships. It’s also not a scent that politely fades into the background, so be sure of your olfactory audience, as well as your own tolerance, before you go crazy with the sprayer. People who proudly carry on the traditions of 40 years ago will love this. It also works for someone under thirty who has a strong sense of irony (and maybe wants to smell like an 80s movie villain in a romantic comedy). It is perfect for vibrant nostalgia, people who appreciate the genre, or retro-themed parties. It is not perfect for anyone who is unsure about smelling very distinctive and bold, those living in hot, humid areas, or sharing close quarters with most people born after 1985. Like it or not though, Lagerfeld Classic earns respect. It isn’t trying to be modern, clean, or crowd-pleasing. It shows up in a crashing wave of Seighties and declares exactly what it is. And that is smoky, powdery, mossy, heady, musky, and unapologetically from a time when masculinity was measured in open collars, shoulder pads, and fragrance projection. Totally unlike the current crop of smooth, inoffensive ambroxan clouds or sugary sweet, candied apple syrups, there’s something admirable about one that still commits this hard to its era.

Suuuuper rich, woody, and mature. On my skin it lasts 13+ hours, and on clothes 5 days. The performance and depth you get for the 30 bucks it costs is unbeatable, but it's almost unwearable if it's not a formal event or you're under 25 because of how just "hair on the chest" it is. Personally, I love it, and I always will. Thoroughly recommend as a collection diversify-er. 8.4 out of 10.

Reminds me of a public bathroom. Definitely not for me, I just can't get past that. It has some note that I associate with being in those automatic scent releases in public bathrooms.

Wow ... should have spent a few extra bucks and purchased the big bottle ... LOVE IT! Another gem that I was so exposed to for a couple of decades but never made the plunge. Unlike many, I really don't pick up on a strong citrus ... especially no orange notes perceived by my nose. I get a nice, refined yet strong woody floral with a prominent rose note being present and amber. It is also a little sweet, but not a fruity sweet ... it's sweetness is definitely from a fairly strong vanilla. It's drydown combines the sweet, woody floral with nice prominent musky scent. This reminds me of 2 other fragrances that I like ... Jovan Musk and Zino Davidoff. Jovan is pretty rough at first but this refines it. Zino is a gentlemanly scent but it also has a fairly abrupt, short lived opening and Lagerfeld makes it more pleasant. If you combine Jovan Musk with Zino Davidoff then you pretty much end up with Karl Lagerfeld Classic. I like the fact that it's a little less formal smelling than Zino but a little more refined than Jovan Musk. If you are a fan of somewhat sweet woody florals with a forward leaning rose note and enjoy a nice musky drydown that lasts around 8 hours ... then take the plunge. Hey, it's cheap ... splurge for the larger size bottle ... you can thank me later. ENJOY!

THE perfume that pushed me into creating a Fragrantica account. I love perfume; I hate the price of today's perfume. Lagerfeld Classic is proof that you don't need to break the bank to smell great. I bought this on a whim from Notino as the reviews here were largely positive. Here's to finding more affordable gems!
