A*Men

Awesome scent, gets me lots of compliments. I havent smelt the original, but the newer reformulaion that I have (just says MUGLER on the box) lasts decently long on skin, I'd say at least 9 hours. Siliage is good for around ~4 hours, but you can still smell it past that. Impressive performance for an EDT.

I love this fragrance so much. I have gone through a few bottles of current formulations of this and I just love it. It’s really quite strong at first but within 5 minutes for me it calms down and all this sweetness comes out. I think the performance is okay. Not beast mode but moderate. I kind of wish they would rework this into an EDP to improve longevity. People say how beastly this fragrance use to be but through reformulations it’s changed slightly. What I can say is I lucked out and got a brand new, sealed metal flask bottle from 2005. The one that comes in the very hard plastic see-thru box. I still pinch myself that I found it on eBay and it was brand new. What I can say is to me the fragrance smells identical to the current formulation but the performance seems better in the 2005. If I look at the ingredients of the 2005 bottle and compare to the current one I can see that they’ve quite literally “watered” it down a bit. The 2005 ingredients are Alcohol, fragrance, water but in the current formula it’s alcohol, water, fragrance. So they’ve literally and metaphorically watered it down lol. I wish they would just go back to the way it was. It’s not like it would be a hard change. With that said they smell identical to me. Literally 98% the same. I cannot discern a difference in smell between the 2005 and the current formulation. I get quite a few compliments when I wear this and people ask what I’m wearing. I remember someone asked “what are you wearing?” And I got really self conscious and said “omg I’m sorry why? You don’t like it?” And she said no, I do like it. That’s why I’m asking. I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t like it.” I wish Mugler would bring back the metal flasks as well. I’m so glad I got one though. I tried the new fantasm and I thought it was just okay. I know a lot of people wish they would bring back the old flankers but I don’t think they can. Or they would. Pretty sure they don’t own the intellectual property to those formulations when it went from Clarins to L’Oréal so therefore they legally cannot release them and were forced to discontinue. Maybe they could rework them under new names.

People say this about a lot of fragrances, but this one truly stands out from other designer fragrances, and I have no doubt it was groundbreaking upon release. I can smell the milk! When I first tried this in a different bottle with no label, I thought it was a bold women's fragrance. This could definitely be unisex, but don't be scared of this being too feminine. It's really out of this world. A*Men has a beautiful space-age syntheticness in the opening. It smells blue, but not in the way you think. The blue is an electrifying, futuristic gourmand blue. I have the new formulation. I wish it were stronger, but luckily, these sell affordably on Mercari, so I spray liberally. I usually stick to feminine/unisex, but this is the one cologne that I can never get over. Perfect for any age

Don't like. Green, powdery, barber-shop-y. Too much going on, none of it good. Dry down better, still just vanilla and wood.

If you are interested in knowing what this fragrance is supposed to smell like, look for vintage NIB 50ml flacons or refills - these are less likely to be counterfeit or the weaker reformulation. You've got the true original when the customer response form in the box instructs you to fax it.

Obnoxious smell. Smells like urine mixed with a strong fruit. Terrible part is it doesn’t go off your skin and clothes. Highly potent. Never buying this again.

A beautiful blend, that creates a gourmand that isn't the typical bubblegum or charamel frappe, mass appealing stuff, but a refined, elegant, suit and tie gourmand with pachouli at its core. A*Men, D&G Devotion PH, and the original Givenchy 1974 Gentleman made me realise that pachouli just works for me.

It smells like a combo of balsamic cherry cola with that classic Amen coffee gourmand DNA and patchouli for masculinity. A mass appealing balsamic resin fragrance, if Church was conducted by a French designer. Whether its better than the original pre L’Oreal days or has the longevity of the original, probably not, but still good.

I have to echo the "bug spray" comment from below. This one just doesn't work for me. It has a beautiful patchouli scent that is, unfortunatley, covered up with a soapy smell that comes of like a cheap hair spray to me.

Another failed nostalgia search. Recently I ordered this as I got acquainted with it in 1999. Barely I remember the smell but I love Kilian Intoxicated so when I see it in the reminds me of section and some people here claim they are very close, I thought I can give it a try. Bought it for 75$ in a discounter. For me, quality difference with Kilian Intoxicated is huge. This smells like a cheap clone in comparison) Anyway, I don't know whether I ever use it. My score: 5 / 10

PRO-TIP , for people seeking the "original". LOOK for "Refill bottles" ! These were for you to refill into your spray bottle . These are older and a lot of sellers have no clue.

My journey into fragrances started just this year so I was checking out many classics that are still available. A*Men is one of them and Douglas/Sephora hides it in the darkest of its aisles, for whatever reason. Maybe it's because upon first smelling it, knowing nothing about it, it catches you completely off guard. "Wth is this garbage??" I thought. Silly me, I just didn't know what to expect. I came back to it because there was something intriguing about its strong similarity to Angel, which reminds me of my mother. Now it's one of my favorites, but you got to be comfortable with patchouli and thick honey. I can only judge the current formulation, but I'm glad you can still get it today.

Hated the first 30 minutes. From there, this got progressively better for hours. Wow.

Thierry Mugler's Angel Men is not an easy fragrance to get into. You might blind buy it thinking it'll smell like coffee or some fun dessert. But then that patchouli hits you. People often describe this patchouli as earthy, but sometimes it can come across as tar-like or even asphalt-like. It's not the idea of gourmand fragrance we have today. This is bold, undeniably masculine, and a powerhouse. Personally, I didn't like it at first. In fact, when I first wore it, I gagged multiple times. It probably had something to do with the scent associations I had with that patchouli note. To me, it reminded me of unbathed skin. Then I took a break from it for a couple of days and gave it another try. This time, that earthy note faded into the background, and what stood out was this really nice coffee-caramel combination which, honestly, is kinda nice! The drydown is when it becomes more friendly to the masses, and actually better than a lot of fragrances released in the 90s.

Very nice powdery opening. The dry down smells nice and chocolatey with a hint of coffee, like a mocha cappuccino. Ive never smelled the original formulation so I didn't really have any expectations smelling a newer batch but I ended up liking it.

Got a new 2024 batch, starts like bug spray, very powdery soapy and a bit of soda but mainly bug spray. Don’t go near it.

Smells really dry and soapy. Reminds me of the old green Lava soap my mom used to wash my mouth out with if I said a bad word. This has notes that I would like in other fragrances, but here it's like they used the worst combinations of everything. Smells slightly better on dry down compared to opening. I would never wear this.

This is perfume which will be consider today as niche, due to its composition. I love new reformulation because the old one could give me a headaches probably. I love everything in it- coffe, lavander, patchouli... the perfume for sure is not boring. And its not for everyone.

Back in 2012, one of our VIP guests wore this almost every evening after work before coming to the VIP lounge for a beer. You knew he had arrived before you even saw him. The scent would fill the whole floor. One day I finally asked him what he was wearing. Mugler A*Men. At that time, I couldn't afford a bottle. Now, years later, I finally own one. The current version isn't the beast I remember. The old one projected like crazy. This one sits closer to the skin, but still lasts well. The scent itself is exactly what I fell in love with: fresh lavender at the start, then a sweet, earthy mix of coffee, patchouli and praline that comes across almost nutty to my nose. A*Men wasn't my first fragrance, but it was the fragrance that got me interested in perfumery. Ever since then, I've been chasing that same feeling. I still haven't found anything quite like it.

(pre 2014 Steel Flask with refill review) Amazing gourmand scent. Reminds me of walking past some bakery that is churning out all sort of fresh baked pastries and sweet breads. The opening will be challenging for a few with an almost tar like note. Once things calm down you are left with a dark sweet caramel/vanilla/honey scent blasted with patchouli. Longevity is great, will easily take you through a 6 hour day. In 2012/13 I bought the steel flask with two refill bottles (pre L'Oreal). I expect to have used it all up in 2026. I have owned/used and absolutely loved A*Men and the entirety of the Pure flankers. For me it was the greatest line to have ever been created. I've had 13+ years of use with A*Men. The Pure line is long discontinued. That alone is enough for me to not buy another bottle. I had my fun and it's time to move on. I also don't want to discover if the L'Oreal reformulation is good or not.

Well for starters I had this when it first came out in 1996 and I tell you back then they didn't hold back true power house for a Edt. The scent well at the time there was nothing else on the market and the smell was fantastic 👌. I just picked up a new reformulated bottle (2025) and when I first sprayed it onto my skin it slowly brought back memories of the original but in a more modern way not loud and cloying in your face type of of scent like the original but a more finely crafted scent to be wearing still strong and still has the dna with the same smell 😀. This is definitely worth picking up if you want to get away from the same boring scents in the market now (2026). 10/10 in my book back then and now today.

This is a well-made classic that helped pioneer the modern gourmand fragrance. I absolutely love the coffee, chocolate and vanilla scent. I just dislike the strong patchouli note, in context of this fragrance. It doesn't fit. To me, it's like making brownies and then putting basil in it.

Certainly nothing if not unique. This is a powerful combination of vanilla, powder, woods, coffee, caramel, tonka bean, incense, latex, and patchouli. It's hard to hate, but it's hard to love. It's interesting, but "interesting" doesn't make me want to buy it.

This is terrible. It reminds me of a hole-in-the-wall bar in a trasy town. Smells like a l Urinal Cake tries to smell good, but it still smells like piss. This is a hard no.

One of my colognes that I love wearing. I love how I smell in it. And that’s the most important thing. If others give me compliments, great. But in the end, I love smelling like a sweet chocolate dessert.

I tried Thierry Mugler Angel recently, and at times it really reminded me of YSL Kouros. It’s very masculine and quite heavy. Feels a bit dated, but not in a bad way—it has that old-school character. Definitely not a crowd-pleaser. The gourmand side is obvious, I get honey and coffee quite clearly, but it’s not a simple scent at all. It’s pretty complex and a bit challenging. I wouldn’t add it to my collection right now, but I can see how it could dominate a room. Very strong presence, very old-school.

Yeah this one is kind of all over the place, I definitely get spices, Tonka vanilla, I tiny hint of powder. When first sprayed it has a scent in there that actually kind of stinks, like a sweaty sour smell but after a few minutes it's gone. Mostly very spicy but sweet as well, not a dry spice. It's a little green as well. To me it fits my age, 51 but could easily be a good winter fragrance for someone younger as well.

i got lucky and found a 15 year old bottle for 70$CAD at shoppers drug mart. i warmed up to this way faster than the bottle of vintage angel that i own. the patchouli isn't as strong so i don't pick up any scent similar to body odor, unlike angel. i'd say it just makes it smell slightly fruity. i still love them both as they're both sweet and unearthly. this one smells more like chocolate/mocha to me, while angel smells like fruit punch. this perfume also reminds me of petrichor for some reason, i wouldn't say it's musty but it's getting there
