I’ve been wanting to try Diaghilev for a while, but I hesitated due to the price and didn't want to fall for the hype. I finally pulled the trigger on a 5ml decant. Having smelled so many fragrances lately, nothing was really exciting me anymore. I went in with high expectations given its reputation, but I was also fully prepared to be disappointed. Boy, was I wrong. The moment I sprayed it, it immediately took me back to the 90s bar soap, luxury hotels, a nostalgic scent memory I know I’ve smelled somewhere before. It brings back a wave of memories and a feeling of everything changing at once. Once it dries down, a prominent clove and civet note takes over. The civet is exceptionally well-blended and pleasant; it doesn't have that harsh BO edge present in some other animalic scents. I completely fell in love. I ended up hunting down a pre-reformulation black cap bottle, and it instantly took the #1 spot in my collection. I’ve never rated a fragrance 10/10 before, but this is definitely it.

I know it is very expensive, but let be honest you should buy from discounters anyways (I got one for 450), and like all luxury things in life, this is something you get cause you want it, not cause you need it. Also, I know there is a lot of biased to the brand, however I am only going to focus on the scent alone. It is a beautiful high quality chypre (perfume family characterized by a sharp, mossy, and woody contrast to citrus top notes) I love the peach in it. So, you know how some fragrances are 2D? They are very linear, they might be good, but most of the time very boring, and mass appealing with no much development? Now there are plenty of 3D fragrances, they have different nuances and development. But this... this.. this, right here is 4D. It is hard to describe it. The way it develops is like a blooming kaleidoscope, with so many facets, such a deepness, and such a wild development. You got to let it open up, it is not something you can understand from trying it on a strip. Definitely not a beginner fragrance. Might be very off putting to a beginner noses, especially if the only fragrance you smelled are the sephora shelf designers (i.e sauvage, abroxen heavy shower gels, and overly sweet, overly vanillic modern fragrances) You need to have a back bone to wear this, you gotta know who you are, have self worth and respect. You cant be to concerned about what others think. Without going to much into history, and the names of this scent, supposedly, the scent is inspired from the old school Russian ballet shows, you know where the richest aristocrats, and oligarchs would go, as they put thier finest attires. Just imagine old money of the late 1800s. This scent captures the essence of that. So, if I could break it down, in the most simple form, I would say the 3 main actors in this fragrance are: 1) Citruses + herbal green spices opening. 2) Peach + florals mid Contrasted masterfully by 3) Mossy, earthy, woody, and animalic backbone. The scent is so well blended, so round, so beautiful, so deep, with so many different nuances. The opening citruses are tangy, sweet, fruity, and clean. Followed by natural peach... as if you smelled a ripe peach. Not synthetic candy like, but a raw, ripe, fresh fruit... Fruity, juicy core, and fuzzy powdery like skin. Florals... I can't even pin point all of them, how they are, dont imagine synthetic florals, imagine freah flower bouquets and flower patels in a garden. they just feel so royal and deep, while providing some cleanness, sweetness and freshness. The base is a road with old oak trees by it sides, draped with moss, it just rained, its earthy, woody. musky, and a a bit animalic, imagine youre on a horse carriage and there is fire smoke in the wind. some times I get more nuances of each character, some times I get less, it really depands on which part of the road you are. The animalics add such a unique aspect to it, it contrasting the citruses, the florals, the peach, and the soft clean ambers and woods, and at the same time amplifying it. It is definitely a fragrance you might wear for yourself. You're gonna smell it all day and if you like it, you will enjoy it. It is not something you wear to appease others, but to appease yourself first and foremost. If I could paint a picture I would say it is how a royal gala ball in the late 1800s smelled like. Everyone in thier finest attires, flowers, fresh fruits on the tables, candle light, wooden furniture, and marble floors, in a big mansion surrounded by oak woods and spanish moss. Definitely an outstanding fragrance with amazing performance. 10/10.

I really like the classic chypre fragrance structure, I really love Mitsuoko, I LIKE this, but I can't rate it higher than the og Mitsuoko. I'm comparing this with just a regular present-day formulation EDT and a vintage parfum, the EDT is the clear winner for me. What Roja does is he takes a classic perfume DNA and then just expensivemaxxes all the ingredients and notes and gives it a hyperluxurious makeover. My personal opinion is that it doesn't work for this scent in particular, it's similar to Naxos compared to A*Men Pure Havane - I just prefer the cheaper Pure Havane over the luxury take on the DNA. Same here. Diaghilev is definitely worth sampling though. If you want an insanely pungent chypre, try Etruscan Water or Chypre Siam.

this smells like an aftershave from a soviet union of 80s, something my grandad would wear. absolutely horrendous.

I asked several opinions about this fragrance and I have only received one positive review. Several females have stated that this fragrance reminds them of white diamond by Elizabeth Taylor. For me, I’m not a fan. This is a 4/10.

I had higher expectations with this but I felt disappointed, opening is too strong with spices and fresh herbal it settles after a while florals are nice the ones i enjoy then very later dry down smells like rich old person very woody earthy animalic and I don’t like. I like mature scent but this Is not for me neither I would like smelling something like this on someone

High price, higher expectations, and ultimately, a letdown. The composition is dense to the point of suffocation. Aldehydes, florals, moss, animalic nuances, resins, all arriving at once and never really letting go. People praise the evolution, the so-called "4D" experience, but throw enough ingredients at a fragrance and it will change on skin eventually. That's chemistry, not artistry. rfium put it best: "Wearing Diaghilev feels like standing next to an elderly aristocrat from the early 1900s who has applied far too much perfume."* That's exactly it. Undeniably dignified, technically impressive, but suffocating. And Johnny_Utah nailed the value trap: "the price alone conditions you to expect transcendence, but once you clear your head,... it's not" I appreciate fragrances that find one strong idea and commit (not all mind you, sometimes I love complexity done right Interlude 53 specifically). Diaghilev is the opposite, a Victorian parlor where nothing is edited and everything is amplified. Complexity mistaken for sophistication. A 10ml sample was the right call. I genuinely tried. It's objectively good. But it's not for me.

Well this is certainly old school, but it's beautiful. The opening is so bright & juicy with citrus, but this quickly develops into the more powdery and floral heart notes. The animalic notes also become much more apparent. The long dry down is very earthy, with the oakmoss and patchouli adding some darkness—this goes very well with the animalic notes. The spice is still there, & the leather to my nose is also more apparent. This is an old school masterpiece, it also has excellent performance. 10/10

This is not kid's stuff. It's a complex magnificent chypre with some SERIOUS fire power as far as longevity, sillage and projection. Personally, I wear it as much as possible because I adore it. Unfortunately, it's limited in the times and places it's appropriate. If you give yourself more than 3 sprays, you'll blow out the room. Again, not for beginners. Please review the notes above. Yes, it IS that complex.

I will start off with this, Diaghilev needs to be tested and experienced on skin. No quick sniffs on cards, no spray on hand and sniff for 5 mins and walk away. It is just so multifaceted and multidimensional and it changes quite a lot that you need to give it attention for at least 5-6h. This is where most people make the mistake and say that it's just a modernized Mitsouko but it isn't. If you only smell it for 5-10-20 minutes your verdict (and true enough) is that Mitsouko it's a 10th of the price and smells similar, maybe even better. But if you give it patience it will take you beyond the classical mossy fruity chypre like Mitsouko, Etruscan Water, Jubilation 25 and so on. After an hour or two (on my skin at least) it stars to get musky, animalic and a tad leathery and this new found blend along with moss, peach and rose it's something that you do not find in any of it's chypre siblings. For this long lasting , super amorphous blend you are paying 500,600 ...1000. It is just that good, that special and that is why there is a small cult of people who understood why they want/need Diaghilev because the others just do not scratch the itch no matter how good they are. Just imagine the competition Diaghilev is againts. This is not your run of the mill Aventus- Club de nuit gibberish. Mitsouko in all it's formulations and concentrations is one of the most loved and well made fragrances of all time. Jubilation 25 is the new modern reference chypre, Chypre Palatin is the poster boy of the niche chypres, Etruscan Water is the candidate from the ultra niche/ indie realm . With all this super strong contenders, Diaghilev needs to deliver and deliver it does. It's just something about it that magnetizes chypre lovers. I for one, am truly and undeniably attracted to it.

Diaghilev feels less like a perfume and more like a dense, seamless composition. It opens bright for a moment, then quickly deepens into a rich blend where fruit, florals, moss, leather and animalic facets merge into one cohesive whole. Nothing stands out, everything is integrated. It carries an old-world, aristocratic aura—often compared to an intensified, darker Mitsouko—and has a warm, slightly human, lived-in quality rather than a clean one. Performance is exceptional, with strong presence and very long persistence. It’s not made to be immediately liked. When it clicks, it reads as a full experience rather than just a fragrance.

Sometimes the weight of expectation can be so great that feeling let down is almost inevitable. I’d told myself over and over how much I was going to love this, like it would be the one to stop me falling even further down the perfume rabbit hole. The price alone tells you it’s going to be great, right? Don’t get me wrong, it feels of the highest quality, but I’ve smelt this before. I find myself searching my racing mind for where we’ve crossed paths. Was it Azuree, or perhaps even Cabochard? No, wait… something from Guerlain, or Bianchi even. Well, I guess it’s all of them. It’s better than the aforementioned, of course, but I’m so distracted trying to reconcile the price difference that I can’t appreciate it for what it is… an objectively good perfume. Once that weight is lifted, and the bitter opening stripped away, the heart is full of the most gorgeous sweet and floral notes, all executed to perfection. The structure is exceptional, and every beat of its progression feels intentional and highly polished. The final stages balance a complex arrangement of leather, moss, and sweetness that would feel out of place anywhere but the most formal of occasions. I don’t want to beat up on you, Diaghilev. You are the standard I’ve held other chypres to before we’d even met. But that, for me, is the issue. A perfume with such acclaim from a brand that can command astonishing prices needs to be held to a high standard. Whilst I don’t for a single moment dispute that this is an incredibly well-executed perfume, it is a victim of its own success, notoriety, and, dare I say, price. For all its brilliance, I’m left feeling a little indifferent.

Years ago discovered this through a sample and knew i was gonna try to hunt a bottle one day. This is the epitome of high quality, luxurious chypre. Now i own a bottle of it and i love this stuff. All that being said, it's incredibly overpriced though. I basically bought it at half the price it's going for from a good friend and i still feel like it's overpriced. Glad it's not sold at 50ml.

Finally purchased a FB after living with a sample for quite a while. Noticed they changed the bottle design so I searched for the black cap. I ordered from JS, listing indicated black cap. I received purple cap. Comparing it to the sample I have, I would say the purple cap is a bit less “dark” or maybe even “deep”… Not an awful thing, maybe it has to do with maceration… Who knows. Still a wonderful fragrance and I’m happy to have it.

Somewhere between Mitsuko and Jubilation 25 woman, or Mitsuko with Civet and Cumin. Animalistic Chypre.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I'm glad I learned about this fragrance through a decant. I did not like Diaghilev at all. It reminds me of old people in a nursing home. I really expected more (because of the price point), but it just didn't work for me. 4/10

Probably the best perfect wearable animalic out there. Fine tune class on the delicate subject, not at all a vintage, one of them impeccable Rojas. No high notes moment, great opening but opens plain main accord. It does resemble the story, the famous historic person, but it's not an art parfum piece, this is sheer upscale meant for wearing, basically full circle canvas of modernistic elegance going back to back with the ideal primal animalic core.

Diaghilev is often hailed as a pinnacle of classical chypre perfumery, but on my skin it feels less like elegance and more like ornate excess pushed to the extreme. From the first seconds, the composition is dense, saturated, and unapologetically loud — a baroque structure where everything is amplified and nothing steps back. The opening is heavy with aldehydes, florals, moss, and vintage weight. Rather than refined, it feels theatrical and over-decorated, almost suffocating in its richness. The fragrance does not unfold — it arrives fully dressed and fully loud. As it evolves, complexity becomes accumulation. Resins, florals, woods, and animalic nuances layer relentlessly, technically impressive but overwhelming in practice. There is little air, little restraint, and no real sense of release — just continuous density. Performance is immense: powerful projection, extreme longevity, and a presence that refuses to leave. Removing it feels less like washing and more like erasing history. Wearing Diaghilev feels like standing next to an elderly aristocrat from the early 1900s who has applied far too much perfume — impeccably dressed, undeniably dignified, but surrounded by such a dense cloud of scent that breathing becomes a strategic decision.

Beautiful, smells very similar to Etruscan Water by Francesca Bianchi, 97% similarity in my opinion, so if you don't have €1000, Francesca is the reasonable option.

Gorgeously composed perfume. Sweet and textured and layered and civet-heavy. It’s like if someone infused Dr Pepper with Amouage’s gold man in a way. Vintage, yet it’s so modern and timeless. I will buy a bottle when I have an extra $450 lying around. 9.8/10.

This smells old school, and not in a good way. It reminds me of my grandfather. Strong clove scent and fruit. It reminds me of something I can't quite put my finger on... the barbershop maybe? Definitely not my favorite from Roja Dove.

Im sorry but its not projecting off of my skin. I got a free 1ml sample and the atomizer just shoots a stream which puddles on my wrist. I need to smell my wrost to catch a whiff. It smells alright. Its the tamest animalic in my inventory. Its kind of powdery. It does last forever, but if I am not in a scent bubble I xant give it a good rating. Im going to have to go 7 on this. I should give it a 6 because its $500!

Diaghilev is truly a gentleman's suit & tie fragrance. One of only a few fragrances I would wear on special occasions. Luckily I didn't have to pay full retail to make this purchase. Yes, it was still expensive but damn, Diaghilev fellas is well worth it!

Upon first spray, it reminded me of a mix between Boucheron Pour Homme and Fendi Life Essence (both of which I own vintage bottles of), but in a more complex way. Every time I put my nose to my hand, it would smell slightly different yet familiar, as if all the different notes were taking turns coming up. It definitely feels old school and reminds me of things I smelled back in the 80s, but it's nice. However, at about hour five, on my skin, it began to smell a little bit like dried urine covered with some sort of potpourri. It could be my skin chemistry, but there are some animalic notes in this that would support this. I can definitely use this if I'm heading to an event that's not going to be an all-nighter, because the opening is so distinct and unique that it draws attention. I just wouldn't want the deep dry-down urine smell to pop up in the middle of an event. Right now, I'm sitting in a cool room, and the fragrance has gone through different phases for the last 5 hours. I can't imagine how much faster it would evolve if I had worn this in the heat. I guess I'll have to test that next.
