a very deep & strong vetiver scent.middle note is very...earthy and orientalistic.i don't think i like it i don't know.....i can't describe this...what...
Like the daytime version / sister of vol de nuit. I don’t think the scents are interchangeable but they are very much in the same family. It is much more fresh, sharp and crisp. Sadly i dont find it very evocative, it is quite linear and straightforward. A bitter green slightly powdered scent with a floral (yet vague) sharpness. Vol de nuit feels more whole and mysterious and woodland fae esque while chanel no 19 is like if a snowland fae moved to the big city. I dont find this earthy at all. Its very cold and dewy and if you’re looking for a clean easy green scent this is perfect. I am still looking for a chanel classic that really resonates with me and i really hoped it would be this one, but i guess its a bit too modernized for me. I dont want to smell like straight up soap and galbanum. I dont find it unpleasant at all but it just feels like its lacking something… A solid 7/10 for me
Whenever I put it on, I hope I can do it justice to it. It's what I'm convinced a dryad might wear, as she flits among the standing wild iris in the woods. Galbanum at the opening lingers even as the scent evolves into the vintage Chanel curated garden. Leather and oakmoss provide the earth. I collect perfume as much for the each creates. Not sure how it will hold up to the wicked heat of an Egyptian July. For years, Balmain's Jolie Madame was my signature scent because Cellier 's creations are unique, Alas, I had to leave mine in Khartoum. But I noticed, after I plugged it into his website perfume map, that no. 19 floats right beside it, Chanel no. 19, however, stands alone and apart, and needs no comparisons.
Solo Italia
go to for rainy summer days. leans a bit masculine for me due to its earthy aromatic aspect, but still a very good classic green fragrance if that is your scene. 9/10
another surprise in my collection! now I have been thinking about the age of this particular bottle. it can be at least ten years old, but in the same stride twenty. I remember it well from 1974. perhaps many people think 'how does he come so precisely with 1974 ?'. well in march 1975 we (my twinbrother and me) started with the study (= working) of Nurse. in fact we started in aug.1974 as Aids in the Ward's Kitchen for half a year. so I really see myself in that particular perfumery sniffing the then important perfumes. I guess there was still a little Staid athmosphere. what I remember of No19 is that it was there in Eau de toilette and in Parfum. and I just braced myself for a Bitter and Countering Opening. I could have sworn there would be Galbanum in it. I just saw it is a Note in the 'Perfume'. here we have the famous 'Green Notes'. where it now may seem that I am not satisfied about the perfume (i.e. Edp) I may have used the wrong words. I find this a beautiful perfume and am amazed how well-blended it is and how it then still succeeds to have the austere opening. in fact there is a kind of 'institutionalized' austerity which is, after all, the Hallmark of No19. and all the Chypres of this era. with my perfume I am struck on how facetted and wonderfully striated it is, this all in Glissements and Fluidums. perhaps there is the Green Phase (the Opening) with [quasi-] Galbanum then Green Notes, the Bergamot must do a Freshening-Up (Fresh-Up the most revolting and dreaded product of male cosmetics) but alas I do never smell individual Citruses only in Colognes which are not my cup of tea entirely. but Hesperidic and Incisively Green it is, the opening, also with Neroli Flowers. then we get a phantastic Middle phase. (I already noted the perfume lasts for hours.) it is all Lovely Flowers, notably Iris, Rose, Narcissus, Lily of the Valley and Ylang-Ylang. these phases do not clash with each other, because of the quality ingredients their botanical and aromachemical features all seem to usurpate each other where in the Middle Phase the Flowers just arrive and the more fleeting Green Notes are (not entirely) disappearing. Henri Robert was the originator of the 1971 Chanel No19 and it is my guess either Jacques and or Son Olivier Polge took care of the following editions. the base notes are all sturdy and grounding this Chypre in Leather, Oakmoss, Sandelwood and Vetiver. it is the Woody Backbone with typical Chanelissime. yet I am compelled to judge this perfume as a whole, as it has just become that in my collection. a Supremely Blended, Exquisitely Present perfume for those who want to maintain personal space and Chicness.
Chanel 19 EDP is amazingly sweet & floral! After spending so much time with Cristalle, I was actually shocked by how syrupy no 19 is by comparison. Albeit beautiful, it's actually on the verge of being *almost* cloying. It is during the dry-down that the green bite kicks in. Not as good as Cristalle, but it's a fabulous green classic in its own right.
Such heavenly elegance. Little differences in the No. 19s but all are lovely.
Beautiful. Very feminine.
A newly bought EdP will benefit from aging in a dark cool closet. I do one year.
This is an excellent fragrance, classic, well developed, and while it is mass market the DNA is relatively unique in terms of wear. This is a DNA rarely encountered on other women and very rarely so for men. It is a fantastic fresh green floral scent that leans feminine but is truly unisex. I think a man pairing this with a smooth wood or vanilla fragrance would be a great way to bring out the scent and wear this anywhere, but particularly to a daytime lunch, drinks, walk in the woods, or picnic.
My favourite perfume from the brand. It is simply unique and luxurious…. I love earthy and green fragrances… this is so far the best I have experienced in this category. Smells like drinking water from a freshly wet earthen pot in an enchanted forest. A masterpiece, a perfect example of a scent that has blend natural earthiness of a forest with luxury.
No.19 and No.19 Poudré are both beautiful on their own, but for me the real magic happens when I wear them together. The green, distant, and characterful structure of No.19 is softened and balanced beautifully by the gentle powdery side of No.19 Poudré. The result is a fragrance that is neither too sharp nor too powdery, but incredibly elegant, seamless, and refined. On my skin it feels very graceful; it does not speak loudly, yet it never goes unnoticed. When I layer them, they feel less like a perfume and more like a state of mind.
This has been my signature for the past year and I think it's going to be for a a long time (along with the No 19 EDT, which I tend to layer, use on clothes, and sport more frequently in summer months). I had always been intrigued by this and was searching for something distinctive and polished early last year after dabbling with Narciso's For Her and sampling some of the trendy, newer "clean girl" musks. I got a decant and was admittedly nervous when I opened it and got a whiff of the top notes. As it turned out, it was the best fragrance decision I've made. It opens very bright green and a little bitter with the galbanum, neroli, and bergamot. I detect a slight aldehydic quality (which isn't listed here, but there is some sparkle up top that fades quickly). The green in the EDP version unfolds into a gorgeous floral – the ylang-ylang, jasmine and iris really pop on me. Then the oakmoss starts to emerge – deep and green and supported by the Chanel sandalwood & vetiver base. Despite many assertions that this is a cold, austere scent, the florals and the base in the EDP really soften it and I find it to be the perfect all-purpose fragrance for me. I've worn it in all seasons, dressed up or down, and generally receive compliments, even though I wear it for myself because I love it so much! There's something really grounding and nostalgic here (without the "old lady" connotations). It reminds me of this vintage 70s green makeup pouch my mother kept in a drawer that I would rummage through as a kid (I'm guessing the iris and rose notes). If No 5 is an abstract floral then to me, this is an abstract spring walk in a bottle – dewy greens, forest floor, and wafts of spring/ early summer blooms in the air. I think if I had tried it a decade ago, it might not have moved me as much, but I'm so happy to have it now.
i had no. 19 round about 2012. it was a gorgeous bright, sparkly, green fragrance. after about a year i gave it away because it had what i call the Chanel smell: a woody facet that i can only describe as “fancy lady”. not a bad smell, but a little too stuffy and conservative for me. i smelled the same thing in Chance eau vive a couple years ago. like with no.19, i adored the opening of eau vive, but then came the Chanel smell… couldn’t hack that one either.
Having never smelled the original or its variations my newer formulation smells to me like heaven. All of my favorite green notes blended into a sensuous, lighthearted, and — although adult and no nonsense — utterly approachable blend (not at all serving boss bitch, as some suggest, but then again, I might like that). Smells feminine on me but feels unisex. I knew I would love this and it did not disappoint! Rather, it has surpassed every other fragrance I own and love in this category. My only qualm is its rather middling longevity. Unless I powerspray in the AM, I often “refresh” with her louder sister, Silences, in the afternoon.
First impression: Smelled like a tonic of oriental medicine, super green but super bitter and woody. Reminded me of the times where I had to chug down bottles of some mysterious root extracts. But after a few hours, the bitterness dies down to this lovely fresh earthy, mossy scent with leather undertones. I personally wouldn’t wear it but it is a nice, complex scent.
Comparing No 19 EdP (2020 bottle v.s 2000s bottle) the smelling profile is still similar - green signature of No 19 on a bed of sweet, creamy butteriness. But in the 2020, the greeness is dialed down while the sweet, creamy butteriness is dialed up a lot more, become sweeter, the ingredients used also feel more synthetic, there's a soapy, laundry muskiness included in the mix instead of the dry woodiness underlining the rich powdery iris in the 2000s version. Overall, the 2020 version feels smoother, easier to the nose but somehow flat, synthetic & a bit disjointed because the muskiness doesn't mix well with No 19 greeness. It's still a rather good scent on its own but when comparing to the 2000s version, it feels lacking. Speaking in fashion term, the 2000s version is haute couture and 2020 version is the ready-to-wear version of it. The 2020 version has much better performance on me than the 2000s version in splash bottle & about similar performance with the 2000s version in spray bottle. A note for those looking to buy pre-2000 or 2000s edp, go with the spray version, the splash version has significantly weaker performance, blurry & short lasting topnotes even with brand new, well stored, still in cellophane ones. I have multiple bottles from different sources and different manufactured years to compare and all splash bottles are like this. I guess the splash bottles of Chanel doesn't reserve the scent as well as the spray bottle.
I love this fragrance. The sharp green opening with the classic Chanel DNA in the background is so interesting and captivating, it only lasts for a couple of minutes though and turns in to a beautiful uplifting powdery scent. This is definitely a polarizing scent, acquired taste.
probably the strangest perfume i've ever tested. sprayed this on the back of my hand, waved it around a bit, and IMMEDIATELY got hit with lettuce. like fast-food lettuce you'd get on a burger. i guess it counts as a green note? waited for a bit longer and the lettuce gave way to the most faithful and accurate photorealistic baby powder i've encountered. everyoneeee loves to say 'this smells like baby powder' or 'i get baby powder form this' NO. you NEED to see the drydown of chanel no 19. i swear they mixed that blue bottle of johnson's baby powder into the bottle bc whatttt
Perfect office scent for a feminine, serious businesswoman. It is not an evening scent - but a perfect early morning one. Soft, fresh with a bitter edge that inspires. Oak moss and green notes are the strongest, but the scent is multifaceted. Leather kissed by iris. Vetiver holding onto a rose. Narcissus with its earthy connotations. And more. After loving Coco Mademoiselle for a long time I finally feel grown up enough to graduate to the Chanel's classics as I do love the estetics and quality. Lily of the valley and neroli I can also discern. The far drydown is also amazing, slightly powdery, floral, sweet. Blotter test.

Probably the perfect work perfume. The opening prepares you for a bright, bitter morning, while the dry down is comforting and personal towards the end of the day. It smells sharp and cognitive, gentle and polite at the same time. It's a memorable, unique fragrance that doesn't smell anonymous like a lot of other perfumes recommended for work. My boyfriend thinks it smells exactly like cut ivy; I think the green colour perfectly represents its smell.
Chanel N19 EDP hits me sharp and peppery before settling into iris: dry, a bit oily-creamy, almost like cold lipstick pressed against stone. It’s sharp but elegant, with moss cutting through, very dry and chalky, like clean dust on stone. It feels sculptural, cool, even a little severe. It is iris, moss, resins and woods stripped of any sweetness. Even that peppery bite adds to that icy atmosphere. Oddly, it’s comforting in how serious and unsentimental it is.
This definitely has the strong characteristic DNA of Chanel - very earthy, patchouli-like, and green. This opens dirty, like unwashed vegetables, and stays that way. An acquired taste.
What a shame! Chanel how dare you to ask that much money for scented water in the nowadays version. Today i have tested this Chanel no19 at Ici Paris. It was the eau de parfum. Exactly after 10 minutes of applying the parfum was completely gone on my wrist. Nothing to smell. I have had the same experience with the nowadays version of no.5. In my opinion you can better buy a dupe of these parfums. They are much cheaper and probably much more long lasting. Chanel is probably thinking our name sells itself so we can weaken all the parfums more and more. I just can't believe such a marketing. Big big shame on you Chanel. 🤮The perfume blast in the beginning is very nice and very green thats all. Ten minutes of smell voor €150.
I had a bizarre experience sampling this - I wore Chanel No. 19 on one arm and Chanel Chance Splendide on the other. And the contrast was... unsettling. No. 19 was so grounding and transcendental. Splendide, by comparison, felt so banal it made me wince. I’ve tested No. 19 before, but this time I gave it my full attention. I slowed down and let it unfold, every nuance. It’s green and soapy, yes, but that doesn’t begin to capture the energy it holds. It’s cool but not cold. Detached, but not indifferent. This is a scent that doesn’t chase trends. There’s something Chanel does when it’s at its best: it creates a feeling of absolute self-possession. No. 19 has that in spades, it doesn’t flirt, and it doesn’t beg to be liked. It's classic, composed, and full of depth. In that strange comparison with Chance Splendide, it felt like two entirely different brands. No. 19 reminded me why I believe in Chanel in the first place.
The perfume which I can't match. It has its own character. The top of the perfume is dry, green, almost bitter. Iris consumes it after a while and the floral heart is more polite but there is a wildreness still. With mossy base, earthy and leather, it provokes. It is disturbing - for me, this scent isn't meditative, calm or natural. I found it bold and sharp, although it has a vintage spirit. Clearly it is a legend-loved or hated, but never indifferent... --- Strong projection, amazing longevity (8 hours and still very fresh...).
Such in interesting fragrance. On first spray, I got the classic Chanel dna, which somewhat reminded me of my vintage No 5 Eau de Cologne. Yet, it takes a different turn. Ronin. Jones’ review is pretty spot on! I get a classic vibe from this. It evokes a memory that I can’t place. Perhaps someone I knew many many years ago wore this. It’s beautiful in a slightly vintage way however it doesn’t necessarily smell dated. Past the opening, I actually don’t find this all that green, as it settles into a warm woody base with a touch of freshness. Eight hours later it is so beautiful ! Great for all seasons and occasions.
