Extremely beautiful, like being in a garden full of flowers with the adelhydes adding sophistication, but never becoming heavy. Something golden and translucent about it. For me the sweetness blossoms out strongly after the first few minutes.
Brought this on clearance today. Gorgeous. Reminds me a lot of Caleche and Chanel No5 EDT especially. I forgot how green and earthy this fragrance is. The interesting contrast between a sharp green and a warm goldenness is incredible. I feel that this fragrance paved the way for both White Linen and White Diamonds - it has that intense crisp green sharpness of White Linen but also the beautiful soft golden warmth of White Diamonds. If you're someone who prefers Lanvin Arpege to Chanel No5, you'll love this. In many way its a softer drenched in sunshine version of Arpege. If Arpege is like No5 EDP, Madame Rochas is like No5 EDT.
I bought this by mistake but it 's a keeper. Its very mature and the first notes are straight up old lady, but the drydown is very animalic, metalic and mossy.
I have the Eau de Cologne, in a square bottle, from before 1990 Musty with capital M, nowhere near Amouage, Hermes nor Lancome Madame Rochas just isn't well structured, I love my vintages but this one is a challenge
Madame Rochas, Two vintage bottles. The same scent, though the opening aldhydes are a bit stronger in one. So yes, yet another aldehydic floral grande extravaganza, served on a sold oakmoss-dominated base. What's not to love? I feel I'm being lazy. I should try to pigeon-hole that floral complexity, place it in the grand scheme if things. ..but does it really matter? Perhaps, with Madame Rochas, orris, rose, and a hit of something anisic do step forward a bit, ...but really nothing really sticks out strongly, such formulas were designed to avoid that. Hmm? Some compare this to Caleche. Maybe in general terms, but that has an introspectively sacred incense note that is absent here. Anyway, its all very nice, if you're lucky enough to have a bottle, be sure to wear it at least occasionally.
My 1st encounter with Madame Rochas was the vintage splash parfum de toilette and I'm not impressed, the thick floral composition doesn't speak to me at all so I quickly forget about it. After a while, I found an unused/brand new bottle of the vintage EDT in a drift store shopping trip for very very cheap, so I just bought it. To my surprise, the EDT is amazing, much more airy and icy cold in compare to the PdT, it feels like a difference fragrance altogether. The thick floral is gone the scent smells grassier & fresh with a lot of powder in the mid and a dried wood/mossy base that smells papery (the base that later used to create Hermes Caleche). The last version I've tried from Madame Rochas is the parfum/extrait, it smells almost identical to Hermes Caleche.
Madame Rochas is such a wonderful hidden vintage gem. I can detect the iris and oakmoss, smells very floral, powdery and earthy and a bit leathery and incensey too. Slightly dusty and very vintage but I really enjoy that scent profile. Reminds me a lot of Nightingale by Zoologist and Soul of my Soul by Etat Libre d'Orange. Not a dupe but if you enjoy them scents you'll love this. Very inexpensive but in no way smells cheap. Stunner.
Given the age of the bottle, I believe this is an unopened first edition. It is exactly the same as the one shown in the photographs here. The initial aldehyde blast is a shocking punch. I experience this kind of punch from many vintage perfumes, but the one from Madame Rochas was especially intense. Yes, perhaps my nose doesn't particularly enjoy aldehydes. Or perhaps it's not aldehydes—but there’s something sharp and piercing that stings the back of the nose in the opening of most vintage perfumes. The aldehydes disappear quickly, and then comes a greenish bouquet. I think I’m picking up a strong note of hyacinth. Then gradually, the powdery aspect takes over. It truly smells like the vanity of a madame. And then, like the leather-upholstered chair placed in front of that vanity. It reminds me of Calèche, but while Calèche feels like a perfectly composed gentlewoman in masculine attire, or a flawless noblewoman with every detail in place, Madame is slightly more feminine. A strong woman with a determined core, wearing a dress with a distinctly feminine silhouette. It’s hard to imagine wearing this out and about, but I feel grateful to have this beautiful scent from history captured and preserved in a little bottle.
This is Heaven, in a bottle (vintage parfum de toilette splash). If you like Dioressence (though vintage is nigh on impossible to find), then this could be for you - both are exquisite. I don't write proper reviews on here any more. Machine learning, bots, web marketing, data gathering and all that jazzmaloney have already had enough business from me.
Madame Rochas is the masterpiece of the great Guy Robert, a stunning creation which will be forever remembered as one of Rochas’ greatest perfumes. It takes the aldehydic floral theme of Arpège as its starting point but plays on the base which is warmer and more sensual. The scent opens with this great airy aldehydic accord alongside hesperidic citrus notes, alongside a gentle leafy green facet. The heart is composed of a classical floral harmony which is delicately fresh and soapy, whilst the base achieves that sensual effect through the use of sandalwood, musk, benzoin, coumarin and oakmoss. The result is something beautifully soft and leathery, a perfect example of French luxury and refinement. The sample I have is of the vintage EDC, and I already know I need to seek out a full bottle of this - it is utterly stunning and a must-have for any lover of classical French florals.
My grandma has a bottle of the vintage version of this, that she got I think she said during the 80s, but never could get the cap off 😂 I finally got it off a few years ago and we could smell it. Still good! Although my grandma doesn't wear a lot of perfume, so it stayed more or less as decoration.
Initial blast, horrid. Drydown, heavenly. Something about this I absolutely adore and I'll definitely repurchase. 💜
There's something brassy about Madame Rochas, its sillage has a certain "strut." The aldehydes have a glinting effect and it feels somehow gossamer and bold at the same time. There is the treble of cut stems, the flowers have no clear outlines and the woodiness tickles. It's all so bright yet powdery, smelling like the way a harp sounds. It may evoke for some a matronly 60s kind of feminine, but for me it's somewhere between Doris Day and Ann-Margret, an usual time for perfumery where so much culture is brewing and contorting, yet tradition seemed steadfast, just a few years before the seams of liberation would burst. It's one I would like to wear while watching Stanley Kramer films.
Review on a Vintage bottle that looks like it's from the Brady Bunch Era (1969-1974). $3.00 from the flea market today , half full w/ the original box. Pretty presentation (NOT the one pictured up top). Continuous spray . Warm motherly (OR Auntie OR Grandmotherly) smell of nostalgia . Classic "perfume stew" that feels "pink, purple, green and yellow" all at the same time. Reminds me of the general feeling you get with vintage Avon -- only better quality! If you are 50 or OLDER - you will "get with the vibe" from this like a phone call from an old friend. The melancholy dry down will have you in tears . $3.00 well spent and to all you folks who love classic perfumes: SEEK a flea market in your area ! Some of the vendors have no clue on perfume values UNLESS it's Chanel or Dior. As if Rochas is a Marshall's "rack brand". I can ONLY imagine that the newer versions must smell like they came from Marshall's . LOL
Sparkling high-tuned aldehydes and a distinctly green hyacinth (more stems than petals), dries down powdery, musky, and woody, a touch earthier as the oakmoss emerges. This can be worn all year round, but I love this profile in warmer/hotter weather. Very uplifting and mood boosting. Lasts all day on skin and clothes, leaves a trail.
I have a vintage bottle of the edp from the 80s. The aldyhydes are soft in my bottle. The reviewer below me is right about it having a calming affect. I wore this while staying over night in the hospital, and Madame Rochas helped me to calm down. I get powdery florals mixed with oakmoss and it gives off the slightest impression of hay to me. Longevity is impressive. It manages to last long without being strong. I would say it has moderate projection.
My juice is a bit unusual in that in came in one of the 60s bottles with the gas. The sprayer hadn’t been used in an eternity and when I went to spray it malfunctioned and I had to decant it all quickly because the gas was effectively consuming the scent. IYKYK. Anyhow, I find this fragrance to be incredibly peaceful. The wood is prominent, with floral peeks here and there, especially the rose. Maybe *I* am too old to be subjective, but this doesn’t read as old lady to me. Genteel and from another era, sure. But a modern day cult house could release this and everyone would flip their lids — it’s not powdery, at all, which for me is what goes “old lady”. Powder and musk. But I digress. If you are prone to anxiety, I really recommend this one. I had too much coffee this morning and Madame Rochas brought me down to earth in the most delightful way.
Anyone younger than 90yo may not be able to hold it 🌚 too old fashioned for me
I don't wear this often as I am partial to Femme; a mistake! I always forget how beautifully green Madame is. Opens with an animalic woodiness but skips straight on to intense hyacinth and narcissus, which are notes I adore. There's much to love, here. (Review for 70's vintage PdT and Parfum)
My mom has a vintage version of this on her shelf--not sure of the year. While I don't particularly enjoy the scent, it evokes a very nostalgic feeling. I enjoy holding onto the little bottle and smelling it every now and again.
Vintage version: The opening is a bit shocking and the green note becomes more disturbing for a few minutes. After a quarter of an hour, sweet scents begin to appear in the presence of aldehydes and yellow flowers. The sillage is very large and the longevity is also high, reaching 12 hours on the skin and clothes.
Marcelo, this is for you and everybody else interested in more recent batches of Madame. My review is based on a bottle produced in 2022. To my nose this is a perfect aldéhydic mossy scent. It changes in the beginning, from full aldehyde attack (there are a few skanky seconds) to flowery explosion (mostly hyacinth, ylang ylang and narcissus on my skin), then it dries down to comforting mélange of white and yellow flowers on woody incense and moss. It gets more powdery as the hours pass. There is nothing at all sweet about it. It's classy, mostly a personal bubble/skin scent, although not that quiet, I wouldn't overspray this one. Very much different from today's offerings. If you like Calèche, Chant d'arômes, No 5 and Cabochard, you just might enjoy Madame.
Fresher I thought. It smelled skanky for a couple minutes then you get yellow floral aldehydic soapyness. It dures till the end I don’t get a monsterous performance 5-6 hours maybe. Creates a soft sillage cloud around you for 2 hours rest is skin scent.
My great-aunt has this scent... I love it. Her bottle is very very old (70's??). A very busy scent, but a great one.
Jean Patou Sublime comes to mind, except this one is "cleaner", not as harsh somehow. On me ylang-ylang, cedar and musk along with amber are the notes that stand out, there's vetiver and orris in the drydown with some aldehydes and only a hint of tonka that is barely there. The first spritz is nearly identical go Jean Patou Sublime but as it dries down you notice floral notes popping up and almost hidden green notes in the drydown. There's also a hint of leather or suede more like, on me, which is not listed, but I somehow detect it. I never tried the vintage, I had a bottle from the 2000s and a recent one and I don't smell significant difference, but for the older bottle being a tad bit more potent, that is all. It's a great classic 'cologne' scent, nowadays I'd only wear it for special occasions making dressing up really festive!
Managed to find a vintage miniature of this. Very soapy and green - it has the bitterness of an old perfume, but here the aldehydes are the most prominent. The drydown is a spring bouquet with woodyness, I don't smell oakmoss but I do get a bit of sandalwood.
The original (prior to 1988) was gorgeous. A Guy Robert masterpiece. The current formulation is a disgrace. A screeching chemical afront to perfumery.
The aldehydes and iris in this smell very heliotrope-y. The scent is very mature and fresh. Scents like Chanel No. 5 don't work with my chemistry so this is a miss. But I can appreciate the quality of this! My skin just makes aldehydes smell plastic no matter what the formula.
So what I am trying to say below is layering the 2 together is heavenly as Sublime makes MR last longer and it gives it depth that the new version may be missing to those who loved vintage Madam Rochas ;)
I have recently ordered a sample vial of JP Sublime seeing JP fragrance being discontinued, so happened to dab it on my wrist and sprayed Madame Rochas on the other. They were similar, 1-2 note difference in the opening. Then about 15 min later I could not tell which wrist was Sublime and which was Madame Rochas, just beautiful and weather has been hot so it just nice creamy comforting, even in hot weather wafting around me , just beautiful
