Have tried all versions of this, I believe I wrote a review on it here years ag but have since obtained the 1998 original, I’ll explain the differences. The first version I tried was the first reformulated version of hypnotic poison, I got this perfume in 2009 and it was the red almost opaque bottle with the black lid which just said Dior. This scent was heavy, filled rooms (was told this a lot) and smelled amazing, this was the version I fell in love with and wore all throughout college when I was 16-18. The second bottle I got, maybe 2011-12 was the newer bottle now with the gold around the cap and black at the base of the red bottle. This version I remember felt a lot more toned down, maybe lasted 3-4 hours on the skin whereas my previous bottle lasted all day. Immediately knew it had changed even before I knew about reformulations. I went through several of these bottles as I had to over spray but didn’t mind as I loved the fragrance and was desperate for the sillage of my previous bottle, usually purchased with the lotion for layering. Back in 2020 during Covid boredom I bought a 1998 vintage bottle off Etsy from a vintage reseller. (Verified and bath coded bottle from 1998 with Christian Dior on the box) and this version reminded me again of the 2009 version, again filling rooms and that heavy vanilla root beer/ play dough scent. This version was less vanilla then the newer version and more sharp as if it was hypnotic poison on steroids. This is exactly how the fragrance was intended carrying the poison name and you can really tell it was supposed to be a poison fragrance but more modern. The newer version honestly reminds me as if bath and body works created a hypnotic poison dupe. Just not the same quality as the original which really is a shame because the original is a work of art. This was obviously because of ifra regulations and just like anything else in life if you are allergic to ingredients then simply don’t use it. The fragrance should not be destroyed because if it. If you get the chance then go for the original or second version with the flame box and just Dior on it.

If “I Put a Spell on You” were a fragrance, it would be Hypnotic Poison by Dior. I’ve been wearing this one for a while now, and it lives up to its name. It’s sweet, intoxicating, and effortlessly alluring without feeling overpowering. There’s a rich, creamy smoothness that wraps around the fragrance beautifully, making it feel warm, addictive, and luxurious on the skin. This is a 100% compliment-getter. Don’t be surprised if someone leans in for a second sniff or finds an excuse to stay a little closer. It has that magnetic quality that lingers in people’s memory long after you’ve left the room. If you love fragrances that are seductive and unforgettable, Hypnotic Poison deserves a place in your collection.

Dior Hypnotic Poison is a fragrance workhorse. It can be worn in any season day or night. It smells of powdery almond and vanilla spiced with soft sandalwood. It is sweetened by luxurious jasmine and tuberose. It can lean slightly gourmand or solar depending on the season. Some days it seems sweet and comforting. Other days it is complex and surprising. I’m wearing it now in July and the florals are beaming. I purchased the Roller Pearl EDT. It lasts for several hours on my skin. The Roller Pearl application isn’t the easiest. I store mine upside down to keep the ball wet and it works very well. All that being said, I won’t be repurchasing right away. I would like to try Pure Poison next. I’m also saving up for a bottle of Cuir Beluga. I will keep about 10 ml of Hypnotic Poison for future wear and comparisons. It is too pretty to totally be without.

A favorite. Its amazing on my skin, especially after a light vanilla lotion or oil. Only downside is, I have friends with drier skin and less body hair, and for them, it becomes slightly more powdery and leafy. Not sure how that happens but I personally love it. Very high and middle nose scent. Always a solid 9/10.

Very delicate almond with rose, but not strong enough. Sort of lacks personality.

unfortunately this has always smelled like play doh to me😢😢 i’ve tried it in several stores, tried the edp too and it always always turns into play doh to me sigh.

It smells like a farm and old leather

Unfortunately this overwhelmingly smells like play-doh to me.

smells like a cheap bathroom diffuser

Smells exactly like Dr. Oetker's vanilla pudding. Because it brings back such a vivid childhood memory, I find it hard to perceive this scent as sexy or seductive. I definitely get the sunscreen association, though. The particular blend of coconut and vanilla feels almost lactonic to me, in the same way many sunscreen creams do.

Try it in summer. It becomes a heavenly sunscreen scent. The brazilian rosewood and tuberose come out really nicely in the heat. During the wintertime it's mostly a cozy, fluffy vanilla and almond liqueur.

I had a total WTF moment with this fragrance! Based on the reviews, I was expecting something really strong, heavy, and polarizing femme fatale, but it turned out to be a super smooth cozy skin scent. maybe due to a reformulation. For comparison, dupe Zara's Hypnotic Vanilla feels less smooth and much more intense to me than this one. On my skin, this smells like a magical marzipan. This must be what people mean in reviews when they say it smells like 'Play-Doh'. It’s been years since I last smelled actual Play-Doh, but i think it kind of smelled like less sweet marzipan.

i was in a sephora in an unfamiliar mall today and, trying to chase off the scent of an unfortunate Lush perfume, when i remembered my lovely co-fragranticans and their multiude of opinions on this perfume. without any delay, i immediately put a spray on each wrist. i wasn't expecting to like it; i'm kind of snobby about big perfume houses, despite the fact that my signature perfume is moschino, and i thought the scent would skew too feminine/too sweet for me. but over the course of the afternoon, i became enraptured with it. i liked the scent well enough wet to convince me to leave it alone long enough to dry. family members (stuck in a car with me for the duration of our road trip) said the initial scent was too strong, but still i could see no flaws in hypnotic poison. she had me firmly in her grasp. every time i lifted my hand near my face, i could smell her. it was amazing. i'm scared of gourmands, typically, and they over-agree with me (which is not ideal because i don't really like them to be honest), but this was a delicious, creamy vanilla with a sprinkle of rich warming spices and white florals. it starts indulgent and bold, but the longer it remains on skin (which it does for at least 6ish hours and at a pretty decent sillage) the more it mellows. i kind of adore it. i can't see myself wearing it anywhere but out at night or, ideally, straddling a gorgeous butch's thigh in a silk slip and playing with his hair. will be looking for a small bottle in order to visualize what i want in my future. and also to smell hot and mysterious and alluring as fuck. makes me feel like a cobra tamer. makes me want to apply body oil and wearing something skimpy to the club. 10.

Really indulgent, intimate perfume that REALLY sticks to you. It's heavy and strong- to me this perfume is well represented if you compare something like overnight oats to cheesecake, it's day and night, this is SO decadent. Such a buttery sort of sweetness. Very lovely

Deep feminine sexy chic vanilla a scent you wouldn’t forget on someone. Winter night and knit tights would go sooooo perfect with this I loveeeee it, it really really reaaaally reminds me of Celine’s “Dans Paris” like it’s literally identical down to the play doh bit which it kinda smells like ngl

Анонім

Liked it immediately after spraying until it dried down and smelled exactly like play doh, nothing like jhag mmmm, which is much fruitier and generally better

Анонім

I just love this. It smells like root beer. Creamy, sweet, a bit spicy (the coriander possibly), effervescent. I wore it in the early 2000s. My bottle had a soft textured film on it. I noticed the new bottles no longer have that. I always liked the soft feel of the bottle, but it’s probably good they changed it as the alcohol from the spray made the bottle a bit sticky.

Dulce, seductor y hypnotico 😆 10/10 Sabroso Me lo pongo a veces de jajas como hombre.

I don't really get the femme fatale association with this one. To me, this isn't a "sexy" scent at all... it's cozy, comforting, and quietly beautiful. It's soft, vanillic, powdery, and incredibly easy to wear. I can only imagine how mesmerizing the scent trail would be on a cool, windy day. Rather than femme fatale, it gives me young working mom energy in the best possible way: polished, nurturing, effortlessly put together, and somehow always smelling amazing.

I’m not a fan of the original version, but I absolutely love this one. 9/10

There are two kinds of women in this world: effortlessly beautiful princesses, and witches who had no choice but to become the ones offering the poisoned apple to those princesses. Although this perfume smells incredibly clean, it doesn't belong to the princesses. It belongs to the witches. I absolutely, absolutely loved this fragrance, and it's one I definitely want in my collection. I'm certain that simply holding the bottle in the palm of my hand will make me happy. What I enjoy most about this scent is its coconut accord, while the vanilla reveals itself hours later. Plum has become one of my favorite notes recently, and its presence in this fragrance makes it even more captivating. In short, this may be a perfume you've heard about many times before, but it still manages to feel unique. And truthfully, not every woman can wear it demands a certain presence.

After hearing all the praise for this "Seductive Masterpiece" I finally tried it, & unfortunately it's a hard pass. I wanted to love it so much, I really truly did. The root beer/almond opening immediately morphs into a heavy suffocating powder that smells ancient to me. It's got sort of a dusty Play-Doh that's been inside a drawer at an antique shop vibe. It gives major "uncool grandma" energy. To be clear: could never be my own grandma, because that woman always smells amazing & is a style icon; the epitome of cool, she would NEVER wear something this dated. If you're looking for a modern, head-turning, power-house vanilla, keep walking! To quote one of the greats from our time "Don't say I didn't warn ya!"

This is such a nostalgic perfume for me. It’s been my mom’s signature scent since I was a little girl, so I always associate it with her. It’s so classy and chic and alluring, and it's such a warm and comforting scent.

oh also this must be the only coconut that I love!!!

How I loved GreyCyypre's review below :)) so lovely isn't it!!! I agree that this scent goes wonderful in summer, too. I adore that plum, bitter almond, tuberose, lily of the valley and coconut on my skin...it makes me feel so mellow.

I've loved Hypnotic Poison since it came out, but it wasn't my style. Or more accurately, it wasn't 'supposed to be' my style. As I've mentioned in other reviews, when I hit my 40's I found that my glittery basket of F's was running dangerously low, and I didn't have any more to dedicate to appeasing the fragile sensibilities of people that don't matter. So now I wear what I want, at whatever volume I want. If the silly peasants want to storm the castle or drag me before the church over my sillage and sparkle, let them try. Whenever I wear this, my mood shifts. You just can't be in a rotten mood when you smell this good. It has just the right amount of sweet vanilla without being juvenile or cloying, balanced perfectly by rose, white florals and bitter almond. Yes, it resides in gourmand territory, but you're not going to smell like a sticky Sunday brunch. It's complex and anything but linear or boring. And much like Debbie from the dive bar, it's already been around the block more times than the mailman. The beauty of wearing Hypnotic Poison in 2026 is that you aren't going to find yourself sitting in a room with 10 other people wearing it. Try pulling that off with literally anything by Gaultier. Good luck, dearie! I won't even bother with predictable whining about reformulations. Really, MUST WE rend our garments over every older fragrance? It's like waking up in the morning and seeing the sun. "Oh, merciful heavens! The sun! How could I have known this would happen?! Someone call TMZ!" YES: this has been reformulated to hell and back just like EVERY OTHER fragrance from the 90s. While it has suffered and it isn't the deliciously overbearing powerhouse it once was, it's still absolutely gorgeous. Dare I say, it's more wearable now that it's been tamed a bit. Hypnotic Poison still stands out as unique in a world full of mundane vanilla try-hards and weak skin scents in tacky packaging. It's guaranteed to pull compliments and give you a spring in your step, no matter what nonsense is on the agenda. Channel your inner Debbie, and let the silly peasants clutch their pearls.
