Les Absolus d'Orient Santal Royal

Santal royal really smells like a fine Persian rug that have soaked up all the oud, rose and sandalwood aroma through out the years in the best way possible! Although it is synthetic and "loud" I don't find it piercing or annoying ever, I think it's brilliant middle eastern perfumery done in the Guerlain/Thierry Wasser way which is a delight to experience, Really good stuff I love it.

To me this perfume gave me an impression with thousand faces. As I begin with this review writing now in the night we already have one particularity of the "Guerlain Santal Royal": it is one of the perfumes which performs better in the evening and night while, in my experience, at daytime it gets easily distracted and even sometimes seems to wholly disappear completely. Yet if this isn't the case, as now it is clearly present one gets also the whole patch at once. I smell a definite strong medicinal (just the way I like it) oud. I smell the strong rose which correlates with the oud in fickleness and the lovely perfumy non-linearity. Then the sandelwood of its name fairly early also steps in and it is a particularly powdery sandelwood. It is this note specificly which ultimately gives this scent its 'footstep' and I remember having read that we find not a Mysore- but an Australian sandelwood in here in any case the powder factor, already considerable, is enhanced with the clearly discernable cinnamon note. So secretively writing in the night within the cloche of 'Santal Royal' I am getting continuous wafts of rose, oud, sandelwood, cinnamon and the leather I perceive here more as a composed factor which emerges as a combined factor of oud, sandelwood and even the, nowhere sleepy, rose. Because of its fickleness it took me a while to get "into" this perfume whereas its daytime "halfvalue" seemed to dwindle rapidly yet in the evening after my work I could often smell the fully restored perfume back. This feature to me also proves that high-class ingredients were used as they kept coming back and back. The perfume is also a real 'work-in-progress' qua development on the skin. In (twelve) steps first the oud appears intermingled with a strong rose, then also at the same time both this lovely, indeed somewhat cabinet-like, sandelwood 'smokes up' in company of even more powder of the cinnamon. the leather is rather an 'achieved taste' which for instance in Montale or Tom Ford or Vero.Profumo is more exaltated and explicit. This diminishes however nowhere the highly recommendable experience of this emotional perfume which offers its authentic ingredients as the waft of a chic salon, elevating the wearer sticking her, him, with golden stars. Not one but myriads. Now, after hours, what rests are the woody notes with an air of sophistication.

This one is not for me. Overpowering, unbalanced and headache inducing intensity. Thick leathery oud scent with a heavy rose twinge. Oud and animalic elements are too prominent and dont play nicely with the other notes. Alot of people seem to like this, so perhaps I got this wrong. And I will say the performance is exceptional, so if you do enjoy it you will not be disappointed, just give a warning to the people you will be around when wearing it 😉

Hands down one of my top 3 scents. I first smelled this on a trip to Disneyland and instantly fell in love. The woodiness and spice make it mysterious, the floral notes give it a little bit of maturity. Literally ever time I smell this I'm instantly transported back into the perfume shop in Disneyland.

This is by far the most underrated fragrance i have ever come across. The fact that almost nobody talks about it or even tried it is strange to me. This is one of the best oud, rose, and patchouli scents i have ever tried. I had to buy it on the spot even tho i couldve bought it from discounters, i just couldnt wait not one sec without this fragrance being with me. Also that hint of jasmin ,neroli, and peach make it more un unique than other oud and rose fragrances. Also this is completly unisex.

I got the 2014 version and longevity is 6 hours the i can't smell it anymore . Another perfume that proves that maturation is not a thing.

Delicious, warm, comforting but still mysterious. There is no way to describe this. I'm sure someone out there won't like it but this is a one of a kind fragrance. The sandalwood is quite prominent, keeping oud in check. The peach and rose give it that sweet, calming feeling. Everything is nicely wrapped in neroli. I slid down the Guerlain slippery slope with this. This was my first incursion into the more interesting fragrances. I usually got only freshies but the first whiff of this was enough to connect me to past lives and do an astral projection to a palace or something. I've never got an actual compliment on this because of our culture but, friends and family have casually mentioned that it is one of the most amazing fragrances they've smelled.

Very nice stuff, rose oud scent with a sweet creamy sandalwood that becomes more pronounced as it dries down (or at least the scent smooths out as it dries making the sandalwood more apparent). There is also a definite honey note (which guerlain are the best at) where I believe the sweetness is coming from. The opening is a little animalic (which I also enjoy) but it smooths out quickly. Nuclear performance on me. a 3ml decant sprayed twice lasts over 24hours

2023 bottle. I like the profile, but the sillage and longevity are below average. The longevity and sillage don't match at all the votings appearing on this page, so clearly, it's another one that was wrecked by IFRA amendments and is now a shadow of its former self... Sad.

Divine scent. Easy going Oudh/rose combo perfect for a man. Smells 10 hour on skin. The newer version leans more prominent on the rose this one is a combo of both. Slightly Animalic opening but the perfect chemistry between the notes. Found an older batch from 2020. Great stuff really.

Yes this is called Santal Royal but the Sandalwood is not noticeable to me. Yes this is an oud/rose scent which has been done many times. But, yes it is still unique and fantastic. It is rich in scent profile and quality, as well as depth and presence. I love it. And so do others as I am frequently complimented on it. I rate it as perfectly unisex.

This scent is very special. It’s strong - like so many reviewers said before - the peach and rose are sweet and jammy, the leather reads dark and smoky, the oud is quite loud, I’m also catching a honey note that might be jasmine. But at the same time, to me, there’s an airiness that makes this feel very sheer, therefore, not at all cloying despite having all the qualities for making any scent feel very cloying. It’s quite interesting- I can smell it very easily when I’ve sprayed it very lightly on the corner of my rug a few meters away, but it almost immediately disappears when I’ve sprayed it on myself. My very dry skin usually tames and mutes the strongest perfumes so that might be why. I really like it! I actually enjoy how it blooms and projects in the heat. I’m looking forward to see how it’ll change in the cold :)

I bought it for the sandalwood, but it turned out to be a rose-oud fragrance—very disappointing. I really dislike oud, so it’s hard for me to judge whether it’s good or not. The dry-down is all oud, oud, oud. Where’s the sandalwood?

Not as heavy as the notes would indicate, and indeed is very pleasant spiced rose even on a warm, but not hot, day. A bit breezy and overcast day is nice for this and decidedly unisex as long as you’re comfortable in a rose.

Amazing, wish it was more beast mode, but smells like the best wood + candle + spices. Super yummy in the air awl

The best perfume from modern guerlain Opens with a beautiful peach note balanced by leather, the peach slowly dies and forms a ground for the main stars of the composition to rise up: the Oud and the Rose. The oud used is synthetic of course, but it is used so beautifully in this composition, this is my favourite Western oud perfume. The rose is a bit jammy but not too much Sandalwood pops off late in the dry down but the symphony of oud and rose accompanies it to the end. The projection and longevity is terrific, lasts for days on clothes and projects for 4 hours easily. My friend used it on his sweater and when I went to his room tomorrow, his room smelled of santa royale

One of the darkest, most sober perfumes I've ever smelt. Intense dark leather, oud with very little rose and... that's pretty much it, I sadly cannot feel any other notes, much less peach or anything ambery or sandal-like, even. It's a black, serious scent. I like it, but can't really tell in what situations I could ever pull this off. Update: half a year later I now think this one of the most beautiful of the series, along with Bois Mysterieux and Encens mythique. There certainly IS a jammy, sweet peach note and a beautiful rose that makes this feel so enveloping so luxurious, just goes to show how much it matters to test something multiple times, maybe with a considerable time span in between tests!

Dark leathery rose oud, I tried this because if the vague similarity to Santal Noir and I would say it’s definitely there this is far less sweeter or ambery and more of a linesr indolic wood with a little rose I think it’s pretty good especially for the price but I can’t say it’s a 10, performs moderately I get about 3 hours

I'm not a fan of leather notes, fruity flavors - specifically peach on leather and oud, barely recognizable santal. It's okay, quite mature and classy. What I don't like is the new batch's poor performance. It radiates quite close and the scent only lasts about 3-4 hours before disappearing. I passed on it after a week of not-so-positive experience.

Honestly this reminded me a lot of the synthetic ouds from cheapie Arab houses. Very sharp and medicinal to my nose, with the delightful peach note others have mentioned nowhere to be found. To the person who said "burnt hair", 100% but to me it's harsh not cute. I'll keep it brief though because this thread seems to have a "noobs won't appreciate this vibe" and I am indeed a noob. Maybe I'll sample again when I'm older and wiser and hope for the best.

I love oud and this is one of my favorite oud perfumes ever this is a beast fragrance when it comes to sillage and longevity. very powerful and oriental scent if you don't like to be seen or to be center of attention, don't try this one

I wrote 2 negative reviews about this Thierry Wasser creation. I was so disappointed about the strong jammy rose and synthetic oud smell that I left the gorgious bottle to rest and collect dust. Three years later I sprayed it on a cold Saturday morning and I was mesmerized. The juice has fully developed and turned out to be a hidden gem for me. The rose and peach has smoothened out with all the other notes. Still I don't get any sandalwood. Instead I get a lot of very Middle Eastern oud and a woody cinnamon. I will not use this one very often but on one of these cold winter days I will grab the black Guerlain again.

Am I the only one who thinks this smells like Amouage Guidance? While Guidance is a bit smoother and feminine, Santal Royal is her bad girl twin who rides a motorcycle and smokes cigarettes. I envision a girl who wears leather, doesn't have social media or a TV, reads Nietzsche, and rides a motorcycle to wear this. Tired of Santal 33, try Santal Royal! It doesn't smell like Santal 33 at all, it's more refined, exquisite, and a fragrance you wear at night. If I still went to bars, I'd wear this with a LBD and a leather jacket. It's sexy without being girly, flirty, musky, or with vanilla. The leather note is strong in this and it's not a suede leather, it's leather-leather. The rose and oud pair perfectly with the sandalwood and leather, along with the peach and cinnamon-it's super luxurious, sexy, and a fragrance a cool girl would wear. I don't wear this to often but I'm glad I have it, especially since Guerlain has decided to reformulate all of their fragrances and cheapen them. What are they doing? I saw the new note pyramid for the new Santal Royal and it doesn't look as good. Snatch this bottle up while you can!

For non-oud lovers like me, it's a complex yet worthwhile scent. Yes, the heart of freshly polished leather and oud can resemble burnt rubber, but only at its peak. But the veil of smoky, rich rose and, indeed, propolis here is absolutely stunning
