Polo

This has to be my favourite winter fragrance of all time. Pure masculinity in a bottle. Nothing beats it. If you're young it's hard to pull off just because of how mature it is. I'm 16 and I got mixed comments about this from classmates, have had girls and friends say I smell like a rich grandpa. Nonetheless I still wear this because I personally love the scent, but I know it will definitely suit me better once I'm older. Not blind buy safe unless you know you like tobacco/woody notes. If you are 30+ this is a must have in your collection. Unapologetically manly and sexy.

The newer square bottles smell significantly better than what was produced in the last 10 years before they changed the bottle design. The musty/sour note in the drydown is gone and its overall more rounded, balanced and smells more of quality, more natural.

NB This review is for the original formula Polo Green (Cosmair 1985 ish- though it was actually released in 1978). A long time back I got a miniature in a vintage bundle pack. I enjoyed it so much I bought a new bottle. Imagine my surprise when it was nothing like the original formula: weak, synthetic, nondescript. Its about the Oakmoss. They're not allowed to use it anymore. So many modern iterations of classic mens scents have this issue and when it is at the scents core, then there is a problem.. This is a very complicated and complex monster of a scent... You start with a pine forest where something is burning. . 1st phase drydown is Bergamot, carnation,Vetiver, freshly cut grass, coriander. As it moves into the 2nd dry down: far more earthy tones, Oakmoss, cypress, old leather, (maybe Tonka) with a tiny hint of bitter ash or tobacco . This should be respected when applying as it is an EDT concentrate and could overwhelm the careless. Obviously sillage is very long- it lingers even longer on clothes or bedsheets. This is one that would confuse the young bucks going out pubbing and clubbing. You need some self confidence, sophistication, and maturity to pull it off. It is a real powerhouse scent one of the very first Chypres that defined a generation of mens scents. A lot of 70s and 80s scents have not stood the test of time, and the more modern men trends move towards weak synthetics might make it seem like a dinosaur. But If you know ,you know! I personally wouldn't wear this in the height of summer . I think of it more of an Autumn or Winter or cool evening scent. Just picked up half a Cosmair 4FL oz bottle for 25 pounds ..stoked!

this perfume incorporates something that is Legendary. the strange thing is that in 1974 my Straight Twinbrother immediately chose to wear Gentlemen's fragrances whereas I, as a Gay Male, immediately wore the then and especially the in the 1980s appearing Heavy and Heady Women's perfumes. where we worked for 45 years as nurses I especially had the hobby of Fashion and Perfume. Ralph Lauren was the one designer who never had attracted me. not once did I found a perfume of his alluring or interesting. that is, except this one. I have never worn it but I owned it and I find it a spectaclular perfume. it embodies a rather oldfashioned Gentlemenship and all the aspects of Old Barbershops. it is an as subtle as intruiging perfume with a pleasant Opening, Heart and enduring Base. if I would wear this I would never feel as myself but that doesn't mean I can not deeply admire it or that it awakens a deep satisfactory feeling inside me. there are some other male Fragrances which also embody these qualities. Creed Bois Du Portugal, Chanel Pour Monsieur and then we have them. DS&Durga's Burning Barbershop. Aramis. never to wear them for myself but if I smell them they possess something enigmatic and truly masculin with sufficient elegance and sway. this perfume is timeless and effuses a sophisticated masculinity and groomed refinement. it is also always great to offer them as Birthday gifts or just inbetween. and of course then you share something of the 'Ralph Lauren Universe'.

This one is the pinnacle of masculinity. It was love at first whiff for me, with a timeless and smoky sillage that triumphs over the powdery scents of today’s market, this one I’ve found is sure to allure others just enough for them to decide whether or not they can sustain your presence. I concur with the comments that this is a scent for the rugged and proud; Those who are brazenly confident in the simple fact of being nothing more than a Man, but certainly nothing less.

my uncle gifted this to me tho sadly i think this is doesnt really smell good and really hard to wear, you need very high confidence and the perfect occasion for it - and still its just too woody in my opinion. it does preform well, 5-6h of nice projection and then 2-4h of skin scent

A childhood friend of mine had a gift set in the early 2010's that included Red, Blue, and Green. I remember liking this one thinking it was the most masculine of the 3.

This was the first vintage fragrance I bought. Grabbed a 7 ml mini. The batch was from the mid 80's. Was shocked with how strong, confident & unabashed it smelled. I almost disliked it, but at the same time I was grabbed by extreme fascination! This was nothing I've ever smelled before. Modern perfumes for men tend to be quite feminine in comparison. With lots of vanilla, tonka bean, white florals, cardamom etc. Just look at the strongest percieved notes in Polo Green: Pine, Tobacco, Leather, Oakmoss, Patchouli, Cedar, Juniper, Vetiver. This smells like a man with healthy testosterone levels. A willful & strong man who doesn't bow down to the modern Idiocracy, where being a man is synonymous with being toxic. This man has integrity & doesn't shy away from confrontation when he needs to defend his ideals. For him truth is more important than social cohesion & freedom is more important than comfort. Vintage Polo opens up potent & sharp. Bergamot, basil & conifers. There's almost a pissy aspect in the beginning, alas I don't see any civet in the note composition. Then it slowly dries down into moss, leather & tobacco. Very heavy & powerful stuff!

I'm almost love this, I love green smells and leather and smelling overly masculine, but it feels like something is missing that used to bring it all together. My bottle is from 2025 so that probably explains it, given IFRA has been busy in the last 48 years since this was made.

Last year , a vendor at my local flea market had a 70% full bottle of this for $20.00 and I almost passed. But I had a hunch --and bought it . (The bottle looks , smells and feels 40 years old!) Back in the day I was TOTALLY turned off by "Dad Vintages" from the past (especially at the start of my fragrance journey in 2013) . Things have changed & I have been very much turned on by them as they are completely OPPOSITE of everything made TODAY. With the exception of some high end niche-wads - that are stealing OLD formulas and dressing them up for upscale douche-hoses. You know the type - 50 year old dudes who take their Lamborghini to the Burger King drive-thru and hopes that the 18 year old girl at the window notices) And she forgot to give him straws and napkins too . I am so happy - no, THRILLED - to have this in my "scent library " ( the library means - don't use this for trips to Trader Joes - SAVE for "special times" as they used to say in the personal ads ). I'm loving the brutal greens mashed with old hard leather and vodka and gin ingredients! This vintage viper stew feels so fresh and alive - it topples all the caramel fluff colognes you see now. GRADE: A. Jesus - I even like Aramis now!

It's April 2010 and I left a review from my old account on Fragrantica: "Nice and earthy. For an older gent and great for a formal night out. Not an everyday use and use lightly. Worth picking up but not a staple." This scent is seared into my memory. I liked it as a kid, teen, young adult, and middle aged grumpy hermit. The crisp pine and tobacco. Smooth leather and oakmoss hitting just right. That fresh and powerful scent that will make a sensitive nose wince on the opening. It all comes together to make something very special, mature, classy, and memorable. It's been around for a long time and has remained a good choice for each new generation who comes along. One of the few scents that can be called dated and yet is still appreciated. I can see myself buying yet another bottle in the future. Often imitated but never truly duplicated, you it owe it to yourself to experience at least one bottle in your lifetime.

Vintage vs current: There's little I can add that hasn't been said, but I will briefly share my own experience as it may prove helpful to some. I have a sample from my father in law's pristine Cosmair splash bottle. It is everything people say it is: masculine, complex, rich - a real treat. About a year ago, I tried the current Polo (in the new, squarish bottle) at Macy's and sadly concluded that those saying that Polo was dead were correct. I found it lacking certain aspects almost completely (e.g., menthol, tobacco) and dominated by a cheap aromachemical approximation of an 80s masculine (which mostly smells to me of damp hay). Wanting to give it a fair shake before despairing completely, however, I eventually ordered a sample of Polo from the Decant Boutique. I was pleased to find it much closer to the Cosmair bottle of my FIL, albeit somewhat less potent and complex. Hearing from Kelan at the Scents of South Jersey Youtube channel that he finds the quality to decline sharply around the atomizer change (tall to short), I ordered an older (2016) Luxury Products tester from Ebay and was delighted to find it the same as my sample from the Decant Boutique. As long as those bottles are affordable there's no need to give up on Polo yet!

Even though it's significantly different from what I used to wear in the mid-80s, it always takes me back to the best years of my life. For me, it's more than a perfume—it's my youth. Is it worth it? Well, I guess that's a matter of taste. At my age, I always keep a bottle somewhere nearby just for a quick sniff.

doesn’t really suit me, the scent that comes out isn’t my taste at all. It’s too sour and bitter, probably because of the jasmine and chamomile in it. I could only use about 30% before I ended up passing it on to someone whose taste fits better with its fragrance profile.

Its a classic masculine scent that just projects hard. One day in my fragrance journey, i smelled a sample. I immediately began to be flooded with memories growing up of my grandfather and father wearing it. He was my mother's father, and my dad and him were close. This scent brings me back to so many memories. I can just smell it instantly. There is so many notes, I simply cant go through it all. But those who know, know. Has it been reformulated? Of course but the theme and core of the scent is very much there. Even by today's watered down version, it last forever. It projects in a room. It really is a decidely masculine scent and one that also evokes older times. You really have to feel confident in wearing this, because younger people simply are not going to like it. I am in my 40s and this scent is pure nostalgia, alongside Brut, British Stirling, English Leather and Stetson. They all carry that similar DNA, and they all hold a love in my heart. RL Polo is a wonderful cold weather fragrance. Its spicy but not in a warm or gourmand way. Its barbershop and cooling. Its loud but not in the way modern fragrances are. It holds a presence. I hope to get a vintage bottle some day but for now, the modern edt is more than enough. Every spray brings a smile to my face of happier days. Certain sense evoke a mood by their smell (ie Issey Miyake), this one brings me back in time.

Polo Green is on another level. Beautiful pine with leather & amber, I love wearing it on shirt/sweater. If I had to keep only one single fragrance, it would be Polo Green or Dior Fahrenheit Definitely worth a full and backup bottle. ^No Wars and Free Palestine^

I've finally reunited with this gem after a random stop at a discount store. This stuff is 80's horny teenage heaven. A number of the hot guys wore this stuff and it really made me want to explore unmentionable things. (that plus the weed and cheap beers we'd somehow score) The fragrance STILL gives off this vibe that says, I'm really looking to get laid or get into a street fight tonight and I don't care which. It transports me into the moods of John Hughes films or even Coppola's The Outsiders (though inaccurate to the timeline) I recall a friend of mine many years ago who didn't smoke, but he was really attracted to a guy that did. He loved how his lingering cigarette smell would mix with the cologne he was wearing. I didn't get it at the time but smelling the tobacco in Polo again as a former smoker myself, I can identify with the attraction. This fragrance may even be from where his attraction stemmed. That, along with the creamy, expensive couch leathers blend so well with the pine woody notes, subtle florals fresh out of the shower vibe. It gives off feelings of comfort. Like big muscular arms wrapping around you accompanied by the scruffy stubble on his chin. They say it smells like "old money" but I think it also smells a bit like a stack of crisp new hundred dollar bills. If you don't want me humping your leg all night, keep your Polo locked up in a cabinet (and hide the key)

How do I glaze this without rambling forever? Love. I love this. Very few smells make me close my eyes in joy. This is one of them. Pine, sweet, man. Never sour, but never overly sweet, tobacco, leathery. It smells like what you think a woman looking at your pectoral muscles feels like. It says "come closer" but not a "come kiss me" more of a "come give me a hug as I build our family home". The scent of an accomplished and confident man. Sillage? Dont worry about it. It's so huge that theres no point thinking about it. Lasts forever. A beautiful scent. Nothing is like it. Nothing. Even Halston Z14 is quieter and more cinnamon compared to this. Oh how beautiful. I have always used some kind of Polo. When I was a teen i used one of the big pony fragrances. When I was early twenties I graduated to Polo Red. And finally, in my early thirties, I have met Polo Green. Polo Black is also similarly grown up but this...this is class. Suit? Polo Green. Polo Shirt with sweater on shoulders? Polo Green, Date with a woman? Polo Green. Your Wedding? Polo Green? Buy multiple of them so you have endless supply? Polo Green. Timeless, perfect, and the kind that makes you say: "i dont need Tom Ford. I just need me and this fragrance is me." If they discontinue this, I will be so royally pissed.

One of the fragrances every mature man should have in his collection. Extremely versatile in cooler weather. You can wear it in the day, you can wear it at night. Oozes sophistication, so don’t rock it with sweatpants. But if you’re going to work, or going out to a nice dinner, this is the one to go with. It definitely catches attention, and you smell like money.

Okay, so after letting this sit in my closet for about a month, the opening scent of ashtray has finally disappeared and gave way to this amazing opening scent. The dry down is even better now after letting it sit in the closet; it's a lot smoother now. Will wear this someday in the fall or winter.

The secret of Polo green is know how and when to use the perfume! That was what I should have learned before gave away my bottle of Polo Green. That’s probably my biggest regret when we talk about perfumes. You know when they say that there’s no such thing as a bad fragrance?! This sums up my history with Polo Green. In the middle 2000’s, when I was in my early 20’s, my brother in law gave a bottle of Polo Green and despite the fact of being so so so strong and complex I really used to love this fragrance. I felt I was older, and more serious than I really was. The projection was ridiculous and the silage was just absurd. The problem was that my fellow co-workers didn’t enjoyed the perfume as much as I did. Actually they didn’t enjoyed at all. Not rarely they complained about how strong the perfume was and sometimes they even let the office door open to lessen the smell of the perfume. So I stoped using this perfume and ended up giving this perfume to my older brother, who already had a bottle of Polo Green. Now, almost 20 years later I know that Polo Green is not a perfume you should use as a signature perfume and to use in the office and and in hot temperatures. Also I know that is not recommended to people to young. That’s a more mature perfume, perfect for nights and more formal occasions. Now I want my perfume back!
